I wake the next morning still in a state of mild disbelief. I take a hot shower and take care of my aching arousal, picturing particular parts of last night’s dream. I brush my teeth and check my hair in the mirror. The brown is lightening but I don’t cast the spell today. I grin at myself and it’s an eerie sight. I’ve never seen that look on my face before. I get dressed and head to the shop.
I put on the radio and flip the open sign. I’m stocking some of the emptier shelves when my first customers come in. I take care of their orders and a few more come in with orders for actual potions. After about an hour things slow down and I start to pull ingredients for the potions orders. I hear the bell jingle as someone comes in. I poke my head around a set of shelves.
“I’ll be right... Granger?”
“Hi Draco. Continue with what you’re doing. I’m going to pick up a couple of things? She grabs a basket and heads off into the shelves.
I finish pulling for the first order and take the ingredients to the potion room. When I come back out I find her waiting at the counter.
“Did you find everything?”
“Yes, thank you.”
I start to ring up her items and I notice that she looks nervous and is shifting from foot to foot.
“Do you need anything else?” I ask as I ring up the last item.
“No. But um…”
I look at her and hold her bag out. She doesn’t reach for it but glances around, for what I’m not sure. Then she leans closer to me.
“Harry said you two went to dinner last night. Did you?” Merlin, where was this going?
“Yes.” I’m guarded.
“Was it a date?”
I don’t know how to answer this. Surely they would know that Potter is into guys, right? Maybe they don’t.
“Why would you ask that?” I try to put a bit of disgust in my voice.
“Oh.” She’s frustrated and I’m not sure why. “Harry said he asked you on a date and that you went out last night. Was it a real date? He’s talked about you nonstop since you two had lunch but he never mentioned you being gay. Did you know he thought last night was a date? I don’t want him getting hurt.” This all came out in a rush. Her cheeks are pink and her eyes are shining with what I believe must be tears.
There are three customers waiting in the queue behind her. I glance at them and back at her.
“Please step aside ma’am. I’ll help you with your question as soon as I help these people.”
She understands what I mean and she steps over to look at the lists of common potions that I make for other people. I ring up the other customers quickly and walk over to her.
“Yes, Harry asked me out on a date. I am very well aware that that is what last night was. I am gay, I told him that day at lunch. I told him thinking it would make him go away. That didn’t go as planned. However, he never told me he was gay. That didn’t come out until a couple of days ago when he came in to ask me out.”
Granger lets out a sigh of relief. “You don’t have any ulterior motives do you? It’s just that you’ve never been friends and this seems rather fast. Harry is absolutely ridiculous and would be angry if he knew I was here. Ron told me to stay out of it but I couldn’t.”
“Honestly, I have no motives at all. I’m not sure what’s going on. I understand your concern. My parents had similar questions when I told him I had lunch with Potter. But you’re right, we’ve never been friends. But Potter is right too, now we’re adults and there are no sides.” I glance at the counter and there are two people waiting for me.
“I have to get back to work.”
“Of course.” She puts her hand on my arm and gives it a squeeze as she smiles at me. “Thank you Draco.”
-------------------------------------------------------------
Weekly family dinner. I work all day at fighting the smile that shows up at random times. It won’t do to have my parents questioning me. I haven’t told them of dinner with Potter, Weasley, and Granger or my dinner with Potter. I should probably ease them into this. Dating a guy is hard enough for them. Am I dating him? I’ve been on one date so that isn’t dating. But he did ask if I would like to go out again. And Granger said he’s talked about me a lot.
I need to stop thinking about it
I get to the manor and Mother already has dinner done. She’s placing it on the table when I walk up and place a kiss on her cheek. She turns to hug me.
“I’m so glad you’re here.”
“I’m here every week Mother.”
“I know, and I’m glad every week.”
She’s been this way since she got out of Azkaban. She is much more open with her feelings, not that she gushes or anything, but she lets us know now that she loves us and that she cares. I always felt it before, but she never said it.
As we sit down to eat Mother tells us how she sent a letter to her sister. It took me a minute to process that since I forgot she had more than one. We never talked about Andromeda. As I think about it I realize that Teddy is her grandson.
“You did.” Father asks “Why?”
Mother doesn’t look up as she answers. “Well, I thought about it after Draco told us about having lunch with Harry Potter. If they could attempt peace, why can’t I? She is the only other family I have. I let her know I was sorry for everything in the past, and I am. She lost her husband and her daughter in the war. I’ve spent time… away. There is a lot to catch up on, if she’s willing.”
I can see the hopefulness in her face.
“Just because Draco had lunch with Potter doesn’t mean they have become friends. Right Draco?”
“Well, actually I’ve had dinner with him, Weasley and Granger.” I say as I take a bite of roast.
“Really?” Father asks his eyebrows high on his forehead. “Why would you do that?”
“They invited me.”
“Why did you accept?”
“Father, in case you haven’t noticed none of us has friends anymore. I didn’t see any harm in it. Weasley even paid. It was actually nice to be with people. I don’t see any of our old ‘friends’ offering invites.”
Yes, telling Father I’ve been on a date with Potter may a bit much right now.
“I’m ready to let go of Slytherin and Gryffindor.”
Mother looks at me and gives me a small smile. “I agree. We’ve spent so many years pushing others away. The ones we kept close all left us in our time of need. If you can make new friends, real friends, Draco then you should do it.”
I return the small smile. For the first time in a long time I feel hope in this house.
“I’m still not sure the two of you are making wise decisions.” Father says.
“Well, I’m willing to take the risk.” Mother says. This time she is making direct contact with Father and never blinks.
We finish dinner in relative silence. As I get ready to leave Mother comes to me and pulls me into a hug.
“I’m so glad that you are getting out again. Our family got very lucky and we shouldn’t give up. Thank you for being brave enough to take that first step. If my son can do it, I can too.” She cups my face and smiles at me.
“I hope she writes back.” I say to her.
“I do too.”
