The English Rose
Chapter Eight
Four years have passed…
“Daddy, can I?” the little tot said as the carriage bumbled down the pot-holed dirt road. Draco smiled and mussed his hand in the boy’s mop of dark hair as he passed the small child his wand. Ginny gave him a disapproving stare and Draco returned the icy look. “I dun renemba what ta say?” the small boy said and he tugged on Draco’s coat as he waved the wand furiously through the air.
“That’s not a good idea,” Ginny muttered as she stared out the carriage window.
“I don’t remember asking you,” Draco drawled.
“His magic is strong, you know that, and something could happen,” Ginny spat angrily.
“Nothing’s going to happen, just bloody relax for once,” Draco said, but no sooner had he said it did the boy’s magic rise up and flames shot from the tip of the wand. Sparks sprayed the cabin of the carriage and Ginny screamed when the hem of her dress caught fire. Draco laughed as she patted her hands frantically in an attempt to put herself out.
“I’m bad,” the boy said and his bottom lip protruded as a river of tears threatened to spill from his dark green eyes all the way down his rosy cheeks. “I sorry Mummuy, I didn’t mean to,” the boy said and Draco scooped him into his arms.
“It’s alright. Mummy’s not mad, is she?” Draco narrowed his eyes on his wife.
“No, it’s fine, but you shouldn’t play with wands and I don’t care if Daddy says it’s alright. You have to tamp down your magic, Junior. The child’s name was Draco too, but they called him Junior as to avoid any confusion.
“You don’t have to tamp anything down,” Draco contradicted.
“Don’t you argue with me in front of my son,” Ginny shot back.
“I will if what you’re saying is bad advice since he’s my son too,” Draco replied challenging her. Of course he wasn’t his son, which was evident since he looked nothing like him. He did however look like his father, and that presented a problem. It was for that reason that Draco rarely took him out in public. The less he was seen the better. That was the one and only thing he and Ginny agreed upon when it came to, well, everything. Their marriage was not a match made in heaven but in hell. He went along with it though because in the end he was wrong about Ginny Weasley. A treacherous bint she was, that would never change, but she was not at all what he thought she was. He found that out the night he tracked her down, after Hermione had ditched him for good.
“How much longer?” Ginny asked in a tone that was more congenial.
“A while longer. I had to move the… package. Again.”
“You didn’t tell me,” she said in disapproval.
“There’s a lot I don’t tell you. Now, hush up I’m trying to sleep.”
“Yes, you were out late last night. Where do you go until the wee hours of the night anyway as if I didn’t know?”
“Sleeping,” Draco said with his eyes closed.
“I followed you, you know?” Ginny said and Draco popped his eyes open.
“No you didn’t,” he replied bluntly. “I think we should tell him.”
“No!”
“Then shut up so I can sleep, otherwise when we get there, I’m telling him,” Draco said and he knew that he had won that particular argument with the redhead. She shot daggers at him from across the seat but she clamped her mouth shut and began to fuss with Junior’s messy hair.
“How did you find me?” Ginny said and she shoved Draco hard with two hands and tried to slam the door in his face. It was late into the night when he landed his broom in the center of Diagon Alley. He knew she’d run back to the Joke Shop, and just as he suspected she was there.
“Lucky guess?” Draco said and he wedged his foot in the door as he began to shove at it.
“I’ll see you at the wedding, honestly, I had a long trip and I just want to rest.”
“I’m not leaving until we talk. You know, about the baby? The baby that isn’t mine because we never slept together!” he shouted and she finally relented and moved away from the door while Draco came tumbling through it.
“Would you shut up! Do you want all of Diagon Alley to hear you?”
“So fucking what! Why should I bloody well care. You just obliterated a relationship I cared very deeply about.”
“What’s all the fuss?” George Weasley said as he trod down the stairs wiping sleep from his eyes. He stopped abruptly when he saw Ginny. “You, what are you doing back here? I told you to never show your face around here again,” he said angrily.
“Oh the both of yous’ shut up already! You’re both daft,” she huffed and she folded her arms.
“I want you to tell her and it has to be tonight. You’re coming back to Blind Falls with me,” Draco said and he gripped the redhead by the arm. She yanked her arm away at that.
“I am not!”
“You want her Malfoy? You really want this ghastly excuse for a woman?” George said angrily. “You’re going with him, or so help me Ginny,” George said pointing a finger at his sister. “I want you out of my life! Parvati won’t even speak to me because she thinks I married you!”
“I’m sorry George, but Parvati Patil is a cow anyway,” Ginny said rudely.
“Look, I don’t know what I just walked into here, nor do I really care,” Draco said and he pulled his wand on her. “You’re coming with me, but first—I’m quite sorry George, you’re the only Weasley I rather liked, but I can’t have you hearing this,” Draco said and then he fired off a spell, one that hit George square in the chest and he fell like a tall pine tree in the forest as he smacked against the floor.
“I should thank you for that, but I have a feeling I’m not going to care for what comes out your mouth next,” Ginny drawled with her arms folded.
“You will tell the Dark Lord that Liege Landon Stratford attacked you out on the veranda of my Estate and as your fiancé I was forced to defend your honour.”
“Ha! What makes you think I’d go along with that? I saw Hermione run from the dining hall, the Liege’s death is on her.”
“Yeah, which is why you’re going to do that for me and for her.”
“What’s in it for me?” Ginny asked and Draco took a deep breath.
“Whose kid is it? Or are you lying about the pregnancy?”
“Why should I tell you?”
“I’m not bloody stupid. You told Charlie it’s mine and we both know it’s not mine at all. That means that you got knocked up by somebody that the Dark Lord wouldn’t approve of. That’s the only reason you’d want to pass the kid off as mine, someone who the Dark Lord doesn’t often look closely at on account of my status. Did you fuck a Muggle, is that what this is?”
“No!” Ginny said and she grit her teeth.
“Fine, don’t tell me, but the wedding is off.”
“I’ll turn ‘Mione in, you seem to have forgotten our deal.”
“And I will tell the Dark Lord that the baby inside you isn’t mine,” Draco shot back.
“You can’t!”
“Why not?” Draco said and he pointed his wand at the redhead.
“Because he’ll kill it!”
“Why? Bloody tell me or I’m marching right over to the Dark Palace and tell him. I already lost Hermione, what the hell do I care what happens to her now,” Draco said in hopes that Ginny would spill the beans and tell him whose child it was.
“Draco, you can’t. You have to marry me. Oh I never should have slept with him again!”
“Yes and you should have used contraception. So this he, is a past lover?”
“I didn’t say that.”
“But you did, you said you slept with him again! Fuck me, you’re doing Harry Potter,” Draco said when it dawned on him. “This really makes me angry too.”
“Why should you be upset? You have everything. He has nothing! You’re a Liege and he—“
“You were saying? I’m rich, I’m a Liege and he…?”
“Nothing. It’s not Harry, don’t be stupid.”
“It is Harry and you know where he is. Tell me. Now!”
“Draco let me go,” Ginny said and she struggled when Draco gripped her in his arms refusing to let her go. “He’s not the one who’s been conducting the raids on the townships and taking down the checkpoints. He isn’t the cloaked wizard. He doesn’t even know who he is! I swear it,” Ginny said and tears cascaded down her face. Draco let her go at that.
“I know he’s not the so called cloaked wizard from the newspapers.”
“You knew?”
“Yeah, I knew.”
“But how? Everyone thinks it’s him. It’s so dangerous for him.”
“He’s fine where he’s at. I’ve taken all the precautions. I am curious how you found him though?”
“Merlin, you’re the generous man? He told me that some man, a stranger, found him hurt and laying in the woods. This man took him in and gave him a place to stay and food. That was you?”
“Just which side are you working for?” Draco asked with narrowed eyes.
“I’m a Weasley! Do you really have to ask? I love Harry, I’ve always loved him. Wait, so if Harry’s not the cloaked wizard that’s stirring up so much trouble and bringing the heat down on him…then…who is?” Ginny gulped and stared at Draco.
“I’m not saying shit. If you think that I’m going to stand here and confide in the likes of you, think again. Now get your coat, we’re going to see the Dark Lord. He has Death Eaters out looking for me.”
“The baby…?”
“It’s mine, right?” Draco winked.
“You’re the cloaked wizard. Holy cow, you’re working on our side now?”
“I loved my mother and father, Lucius and Narcissa,” Draco said with gritted teeth and they left the Joke Shop just as George began to rouse from the stunner Draco shot him with.
“Draco, wake up. The carriage stopped,” Ginny said and she shook the blond awake. Draco leaned forward and glanced out the window. There was a man in the distance, chopping firewood in the biting cold. He was older, and the scar on his forehead was faded, but he was still the same wizard, still fast on the draw.
“Junior, I’ll need my wand back now,” Draco said and he plucked the wand from the tiny hands of the sleeping child.
“I don’t want you sparring with him this time. It makes me nervous when you two duel.”
“I need the practice, so shut up already,” Draco said as he exited the carriage and sent the driver on his way. “I have to be good if I’m going to play Harry Potter. You know my army has grown. Your brother Ron saw to that,” Draco said with pride. Ginny cradled her sleeping son in her arms as they set off across the field towards the man chopping wood.
“Hermione is the real force behind that movement, so you should thank her.” Draco winced at hearing her name. Even after so many years it still hurt to think about his sweet Rose.
“Do you see her? How does she look?” Draco asked without trying to appear obvious.
“Me, are you kidding? I married you and had your baby, she hates me,” Ginny said and she frowned.
“You didn’t have my kid,” Draco muttered.
“She thinks I did. I did see her in town once. She glared at me but she was busy with the baby so she didn’t pay me much attention and besides, I was with Myrtle from the women’s auxiliary, so it’s not as if I was going to stop and say hello.”
“She has a child now?” Draco asked and it felt like he’d been bowled over by a hippogriff right at that moment.
“A boy, at least I think it’s a son. He was wearing a blue snowsuit so I just assumed.”
“Is she married?”
“Do you really want me to answer that?” Ginny asked.
“She’s married,” Draco said and he bit the inside of his cheek.
“Think fast,” a man called out and Draco was drawn from his thoughts when a red bolt came whizzing towards him.
“Expelliarmus,” he chanted and he raised his wand and then he watched the other wizard’s wand go sailing into the nearby woods.
“Pretty good, Draco. You’ve gotten loads faster,” Harry Potter said and he gave him a lopsided grin.
Review?
Shorter chapter, but I wanted to get this out quickly. I think the last chapter was quite a bombshell so I wanted to expand on it more. This chapter may bring up more questions than answers though lol That being said, I’m not going to keep them apart for too much longer. Hopefully they can find their way back to each other, have to wait and see. I have some fun stuff planned.
