Chapter 7
~~~~~
Knock, Knock
The soft sound brought Draco back to earth from the stupor he’d been sucked into while staring off into space as he sat in his office. When the knocks repeated themselves, Draco scowled and put his pen down. He’d been trying to grade some essays but the past couple of days have weighed heavily on his mind. The third round of knocks made him grind his teeth as he stood up and opened the door, prepared to yell at whoever it was that dared to disturb him at that moment. Before him stood Isolde Brown, the Slytherin girl who had frequently been seen talking with Harry on various occasions. She was a student that Harry often praised when the two of them were alone.
If it had been anyone else, Draco would have ripped them a new one. However, as that was not the case, Draco opened his door wider and stepped aside so the girl could enter. She did so but she didn’t go near the chair on the off side of Draco’s desk. Instead she began pacing the office floor. Raising an eyebrow at the girl’s nervous behavior, Draco went back to his chair and sat down. He watched her for a few minutes as she paced back and forth before he finally spoke.
“Miss. Brown, if there is something on you’re mind then you might as well spit it out.” Draco’s voice was level and patient. Even with his comment, it took quite a few more moments before the girl finally sat down in his chair. Her head was bowed and her voice was soft and trembling.
“Professor, may I ask you a few questions of a personal nature? I know you normally don't answer such questions but please Professor. I must have some answers.” Her voice trembled to match the soft shaking of the rest of her body.
Silver eyes gazed upon the student for a few moments, weighing his options. As Draco watched her, he realized that she was acting very guilty about something and she looked as if it was about to crush her. As he happened to have a weak spot for his own house he decided to step away from his ‘no-personal-questions’ policy. He gathered up the essays he’d been trying to work on and set them aside so that there would be no distractions. Then he opened a bottom drawer and pulled out a glass and a bottle of Firewhiskey. Once the two things were sitting on his desk, he poured himself and then found that he still had a bottle of butterbeer in his desk as well. He usually kept a bottle in his desk for when the boys came to visit his office but he thought he’d been out. So having found the bottle of butterbeer, Draco grabbed another glass and poured some of that into the glass before setting it in front of the girl. When he was finally settled, Draco took a sip of his whiskey and looked expectantly at the girl. The girl looked curiously at the drinks on the desk.
“Professor… I dont think-”
“I dont speak of personal matters with students. However,” Draco paused and relaxed in his chair as he took another sip of his whiskey, “I will talk about personal matters with a friend over drinks. That being said, when I do talk with my friends in such a manner, I do trust that they will not betray my confidence” He raised an eyebrow, making sure that she understood quite well what he was meaning. The Slytherin’s face looked a bit shocked, but she quickly nodded her head and picked up the glass containing her butterbeer.
“Professor I-”
“Isolde look at me.” Her name coming from his lips made her stop. Her eyes had dropped to her lap once again and he wanted to take a better look at her. He held her eyes with his while he took in her appearance. Dark circles were prominent under her eyes, the rims of her eyes themselves were red and her skin seemed pale. He felt bad for the girl. Clearly she’d been suffering over something for the last few days and it was starting to take its toll on her. “Right now, we’re friends. You need not address me as Professor”
His comment brought a tiny smile to her lips, “You know that’s not very appropriate.”
Draco shrugged his shoulders taking another sip from his drink, “Between student and teacher you’re right, but we’re not student and teacher. We’re friends. So just call me Malfoy.”
“What, I can’t call you by you’re given name since we’re friends and all?”
The question made Draco smirk in his trademark way, “We’re not that good of friends yet. So what has you so out of sorts Isolde? Are you pregnant?” The horror that flooded the girl’s face nearly made Draco laugh heartily but he expertly kept it to himself.
“Merlin no!” Isolde cried out. Calming down from her momentary shock, she wrung her hands in her lap, the guilty look Draco noticed earlier coming back. She took a deep breath before speaking, “No. I came to ask if Professor Potter is alright. He’s been gone from class the rest of last week, no one saw him over the weekend and he was absent from class today as well. There are rumors going around that he’s been killed or that he’s been hurt so badly that he wont be coming back.” The girl continued to prattle on about the various rumors that were going on about Harry. As she talked, Draco watched her. The question itself wasn’t really one that Draco would consider personal but the panic in her voice made him curious. “I mean, he can’t be too injured right Malfoy? When I left him in the hospital wing he looked just fine. He made it seem like his injuries weren’t really that serious after all. He just can’t be that badly hurt.”
Her last statement sounded as if it was meant to convince herself more than anyone else and that was when something clicked in his head and he pinned her with serious silver eyes, “Isolde. You’re the one that lost control of the curse aren’t you.” The girl visibly froze, her eyes panicked and what little color she had to her skin was instantly gone. Tears began to fall unnoticed. Bingo. Anger momentarily flared inside of Draco, his first instinct to make the one who’d hurt his lover sorry but as quickly as the feeling sparked to life, it died, leaving only sad sympathy. It was no wonder the girl looked like she was going to break. She’d spent days worrying and fretting and fearing that she’d just killed her Professor. Sighing heavily, Draco downed the rest of his drink. Taking a moment to gather himself, he finally found words to speak to her that weren’t tinged with the anger he had felt momentarily.
“You’re wrong Isolde. Harry’s injuries were quite extensive.”
“You mean I killed him?” Isolde’s was barely audible.
Draco shook his head, “No. Harry is quite alive and he’s recovering in our chambers. But I want to you completely understand. That spell crushed nearly every bone in his shoulder and arm. His ribs were broken in such a way that they were puncturing his lung. He was critically injured. However,” He waited until Isolde looked at him once again, for she had looked down to her lap, “That day wasn’t completely your fault. There were other factors that resulted in his injury.”
“When will he return? I still have yet to apologize to him.” Her voice was tired but relieved.
Draco sighed once again, pinching the bridge of his nose. “I dont know.”
The girl’s eyes widened, “What?” For the first time since she’d met the man, the blonde looked tired and vulnerable. His suddenly hollowed eyes had wandered to stare at the desk as if there was nothing there at all. The sight was a bit unsettling to the girl. When Draco didn’t answer, Isolde asked again, “What do you mean by that Malfoy?”
“Exactly what I said. I dont know when he’ll return. He fell into a coma of sorts two days ago and has yet to wake up.”
“I dont understand.”
“I dont either,” Draco laughed ruefully, “His body seemed to have just shut down. Nothing seems to be wrong with him. Most if not all of his injuries from his accident have healed since he’s been sleeping so we dont really have a reason as to why he wont wake up.” Actually, that was a lie but Draco was not about to tell this young student about Harry’s pregnancy.
The morning after Draco had ‘punished’ Harry for leaving without saying anything, Draco tried to wake Harry up so he could have breakfast with the boys. But when the brunette did not wake up, Draco panicked. He flooed Dr. Jagra and the man immediately came over. Jagra performed multiple diagnostic spells to determine whether there was something seriously wrong with the man. Surprisingly enough, the results came back negative for any trace of injury. Even the injuries Harry had suffered in his accident had been completely healed. After a moment to let all of that sink in, Jagra had Draco explain again what had occurred before Harry had fallen asleep. After Draco explained what happened multiple times, Jagra finally came to the conclusion that the magical transfer between the two men had overloaded his system and his body had put itself to sleep until his body could handle all the magic it had taken on. The worst part about it all was that the only thing any of them could do was wait until Harry woke up.
The soft clink of glass brought Draco out of his thoughts. He looked up just as Isolde finished pouring a full glass of the firewhiskey and pushing the glass towards Draco. He raised an eyebrow in question. When she realized she was being watched, a slight blush colored her cheeks as she shrugged her shoulders.
“Suddenly you look as terrible as I feel. Thought you could use another drink.”
Chuckling, Draco leaned forward to take the drink offered to him. He raised the small glass up in toast to her and threw the drink back with ease. His head twitched to the side as the bite of the drink assaulted his taste buds.
“Can I ask you another question Malfoy?” When Draco gave no indication that he would refuse, Isolde continued, “Why dont you guys share a last name? I mean you’re married and all”
The blonde nearly choked on air. It took a moment for him to compose himself.
“I beg your pardon!”
Brown eyebrows raised slightly, “You mean you dont know?” When her only response to that was a rather heated glare she continued, “Malfoy, you are already married.”
“No we’re not.” Draco sat up straight in his chair, “What makes you think otherwise.”
Isolde frowned openly confused, “But sir, isn’t your youngest child a child that the two of you conceived together? I know the papers say that it’s an adoptive love child but that’s not quite right. He truly is the both of yours.”
Draco stared at Isolde for a moment, “Yes. Harry carried Ciel to term inside his own body. What does that have to do with it? And just spit it out already.” His voice barely held back the sudden irritation he was feeling.
“Due to the rarity of a wizard pair conceiving, in the event that it were to occur the pair are automatically considered married by wizarding law. If you looked there would be a marriage certificate at the Ministry of Magic if you weren’t mailed one”
This new bit of information instantly made Draco’s mouth go dry, every muscle in his body tense. His voice was emotionless when he next spoke. “How do you know this.”
The girl smiled warmly as she pointed to herself, “My fathers are just like you and Professor Potter. And that’s what they told me. But,” Her eyebrows knitted together a bit, “I’m really surprised you didn’t know about the marriage contract.”
Draco stood up urgently, “You and I will be continuing this conversation but until then I need to excuse myself. See yourself out Isolde.” Not looking back, Draco left his office and went to the Room of Requirement where the boys were currently playing. Entering the room, he smiled as the boys rushed him. They’d become impossibly clingy since Harry had gone into a coma. Yet, their neediness wasn’t something that could be helped. They’d never gone so many days without their Dad and to not have him around had put the young ones on edge in the worst of ways. Whenever possible Draco had taken the time throughout his day to come see the boys so they weren’t as clingy when he brought them home for the evening. Kneeling down he made sure the boys were paying attention.
“Hey boys. I need to leave the castle for a little bit. I have to go to a place that you both wont like. It’s very boring and it’s not a place you want to be. So I’ve come to ask, would you like to stay here with the elves or I can take you to go see Sybil. You boys haven’t seen her in a while and I’m sure she’d love to see you.”
“Papa, we wanna go with you.” Teddy said. Ciel, who’d become quiet without Harry around, nodded in agreement.
The blonde shook his head, “I’m sorry. But you can’t come with me. It’s very important that I go alone. I promise it wont take me more than an hour or two to complete my errand but then I’ll be home and you’ll have me to yourselves for the rest of the evening.” He felt for the boys when his words caused them both to become visibly unhappy. Ciel came over to bury his head in Draco’s chest. Sighing internally, the blonde wrapped his arm around the child. “I’m truly sorry. But this is important. I know you boys are feeling lonely and you’re world isn’t going as we all hoped. But please hang in there for me ok?”
They stayed like that for a moment before Ciel pulled away to look at his father, “Can we go see Sybil?”
Smiling softly, Draco nodded his head. “Yeah, we can go see Sybil. Come on, lets go see Sybil. Then we’ll grab some dinner when I pick you boys up.”
Together the three of them left Hogwarts and traveled back to the boy’s home neighborhood where they entered the daycare center that Draco had visited once before. When they walked up to the front desk a lady with black hair looked up to greet them with a smile. Her smile instantly brightened when her gaze fell upon the two smaller boys.
“Ciel! Teddy! Welcome back! It’s been quite a while since I’ve last seen you.” She stood up from her desk and walked around the counter and knelt down. Both boys ran over to her and hugged her tightly. When they let go of her, Sybil stood up and faced Draco. “Hello sir. I dont know if we officially met the last time you were here but my name is Sybil Melenor.” She held out her hand which Draco shook.
“Hi. I’m Draco Malfoy.”
The woman smiled and briefly looking around before refocusing on the blonde, “I see that Mr. Potter is not with you today?”
Draco flinched at the question. He couldn’t hide the sad twinge in his voice as he responded, “No. Harry had an accident so it’s just me dropping off the boys.” Large blueish-green eyes widen in horror.
“Oh my goodness. I am so sorry.” Pitying eyes looked towards the young boys whose shoulders had slumped a bit at the mention of their absent father. Once again she returned her focus to Draco, “Truly. I’m sorry to hear that. I hope its not too serious. Mr. Potter has always been one of our favorite fathers.” Smiling as warmly and reassuringly as she could, Sybil held out both hands towards the boys. “Alright you two. Why dont you boys and I go read a book. And ya know,” She lowered her voice as if she were telling them a secret, “I happen to know that we have a litter of puppies that have come to play with us. Would you like to go see them?” At the mention of puppies the boys brightened a bit and shook their heads enthusiastically as they each took an offered hand. Facing Draco, she winked at him playfully, “Dont worry Mr. Malfoy. You’re leaving your boys in good hands. We’ll see you when you get back.” And in seconds Draco was standing by himself in the lobby. Feeling like that was much easier then he thought it would be, Draco left the daycare and made his way to the Ministry of Magic.
It didn’t take too long to get there between walking to an apparation point and apparating to a spot where he could gain entrance into the Ministry. Walking around the Ministry felt incredibly awkward and weird but he didn’t allow the stares or sneers he received to deter him. He was on a mission both to find the information he was looking for and to get back to his boys as soon as he could.
His boys. The thought brought a small smile disguised as a smirk to his lips. Thinking of them as his was so natural at this point and he honestly loved it. It didn’t take too long to reach the Department where he could find the records for wizarding marriage licenses. He approached the desk where a witch was busily filling out various forms. He discreetly cleared his throat which gained him the woman’s attention. As it would happen, he was in luck. The witch smiles sweetly at him and set down her quill. Draco had been certain he would receive the usual nasty attitude.
“Hello there sir. How may I help you?”
Draco flashed her a dazzling smile, “Hi. I was wondering if I could see the records for the marriage licenses issued 5 years ago.”
She frowned a little but shrugged her shoulders, “Of course sir. Are you looking for anyone in particular?”
“Yes I am but if you don’t mind I’d rather not say who I’m looking for. If I were honest with you I am not even sure a license even exists in which case who I’m looking for doesn’t even matter. Either way I am requiring to act discreetly.” The last statement was a hint for her and thankfully she seemed to be a smart witch. She smiled knowingly and stood up.
“This way Mr. Malfoy. We’ll find the information you’re looking for.”
Silver eyes narrowed on the woman as she guided him down a hallway. “You know who I am.”
The woman chuckled softly, “Of course I do. Everyone knows who you are.”
“And yet you’re helping me so readily?”
She shrugged her dainty shoulders, “Honestly I don’t care what happened during the war. You’re actions since then seem to have deemed you a decent sort. Anyways what was the year exactly that you were looking for?”
They’d arrived in a section where there were rows and rows of filing cabinets that housed official marriage licenses filed over the years. Draco told her the year and together they looked for proper filing cabinets. It took only a few moments to find the proper year and when Draco hesitated at being asking for the month and date, the witch smiled knowingly and made some lame excuse before walking away. Free to search by himself, Draco search for the date Ciel was conceived. It was a date that even he couldn’t forget. How could he? The day the Dark Lord was defeated was not an easy day to forget. It only took a few minutes to find the exact month that he was looking for. Flipping through the files, he paused before he would reach the exact day a license might have been filed. If Miss. Brown were correct then that would mean Harry and himself had been married for over 5 years. It would also mean that the two weren’t in need of a wedding. That thought saddened him a bit. He’d been looking forward to planning a wedding with Harry.
Taking a deep breath in and then letting go of it, Draco forged ahead and started flipping through the papers. He flipped until he found one that caught his eye and made every single muscle in his body sing. With fear, happiness, disappointment or what he wasn’t sure. But there it was. Isolde was right. A marriage certificate for Misters Harry James Potter and Draco Lucius Malfoy. In the corner it stated that the certificate was forged via magic with the time and date. Holding the certificate in his hands, he walked back out to where the witch had returned to finish some paperwork at her desk. She looked up at the sound of footsteps and smiled softly at the man.
“Did you find what you were looking for?”
Draco cleared his throat and gave her his most serious gaze, that one that meant business but not in a scary kind of way, “I need an official copy of this marriage certificate. Can you do it or do I need someone else to do this?” His voice was a little unsteady.
The witch stood up and walked over to him. “Sir, why dont you just take that one. Since that’s the original copy, it belongs to you. Once you take it a true copy of it will replace it and at that point it would need to be officially copied if you require another one.” When silver eyes turned piercing she gestured towards the hall in which Draco had come, “I’ve gone through each and every one of these licenses Mr. Malfoy. It’s my job to make sure that they are where they should be and test the legitimacy of each certificate. It’s my job to make sure the magical bond that creates these certificates are true. It also helps that I have a photographic memory.” Her face turned thoughtful, “By the look on your face, you truly didn’t know this existed did you?”
The blonde shook his head, “No. Neither of us did. Can I trust that you will continue to keep this to yourself?”
“I signed a waiver and took an oath when I started working in this department that prevents me from disclosing this information to the press. At least in this department, we do value people’s privacy.” Her eyes flickered cheerfully when the other man’s stature visibly relaxed. “Is the child cute?”
“What?” Draco asked guardedly.
She shrugged before answering, “That certificate was clearly created by magic alone. As you are both men it only means one thing. You dont have to answer. I just thought I’d ask.” She turned to sit back down at her desk, purposefully acting nonchalant even though she desperately wanted to know.
Silence filled the space as Draco stared at the certificate in his hands and the witch worked on her paperwork. After a moment Draco started making his way to the door. Just as he was about to walk out the door, he looked back at the witch and smiled at her. “He looks just like his parents.” He walked out the door upon seeing her excited smile.
~~~~~
Four days. Harry had been asleep for four days and Draco was realizing just how incredible Harry was. How he had managed two young children all the time by himself for years was a wonder. The boys were driving Draco absolutely crazy. How could two boys be so clingy and produce so much snot and mischief all at the same time! Multiple times Draco had to leave class because the elves would pop into class panicked over something one of the boys had done, more often than not, that something was usually caused by Ciel. Teddy usually just went along with whatever prank or piece of mischief Ciel cooked up. And by the time Draco drug them back to their chambers for the evening Ciel in particular was constantly defiant and testing boundaries one moment and crying and clinging to Draco’s leg the next. The emotional whip lash the boy was putting everybody through was exhausting and Maka was of no help for she seemed to refuse to talk to a screaming child. Didn’t help that she rarely left Harry’s side. And it had only been four days. On the fourth day Ciel refused to go with the elves and was in the middle of a massive temper tantrum.
Draco looked on at the child seething, he’d sent Teddy on ahead and was thoroughly planning on making the blonde boy go once he was finished with his antics. He was frustrated with the whole situation. Never had he seen Ciel act in such a manner and he was at a loss as to how to handle it. So he sat in a chair and watched as the little child so much like himself threw himself on the floor screaming and thrashing about. As he watched he contemplated his son’s behavior. While he did so, it dawned on him. Since when has Ciel EVER acted in such a manner. Never. At lease not since Draco had met the boy. The boy had always been happy and well behaved. He was a boy so of course he got into a bit of mischief every now and then but never had that mischief been truly bad. And never had the boy thrown a tantrum.
“You’d better wake up soon Harry.” Draco muttered under his breath. For the second time in 5 minutes a thought dawned on him. But this time, he felt incredibly stupid and embarrassed as it bounced around in his head. Since when had the boys ever gone more than two nights without seeing their dad. And even then, Harry had always been available if they needed a moment with dad before continuing their adventure. Staring down at his son on the floor, Draco felt sad. Getting out of his chair, Draco remembered something he was once told and walked into the boys’ room. When he came out he gathered his thrashing son into his arms, using his strength to hold the child still as he held the boy close. Then he made himself comfortable on the couch, still thwarting Ciel’s attempts to break free.
Five long minutes passed before Ciel grew too tired to fight Draco and when he did he realized that stuffed between himself and the older man was his favorite stuffed dragon Drake. Upon grasping the dragon tightly in his hands, Draco leaned down to whisper in the boy’s ear.
“You’re hurting and I’m so sorry for that. I realize that I’m not your Daddy. But I am still your Papa and I am going to hold you until Drake and I make you feel better. Is that ok?” The boy whimpered before all out wailing, all fight having left the boy’s body. Hearing the boy cry so mournfully was tearing Draco’s heart to pieces, cause he understood how the boy felt. It hadn’t exactly been easy when Harry fell into his coma. He’d grown so use to Harry being there to talk to, to bicker with, and love that now that he wasn’t there anymore it was like making a alcoholic go cold turkey.
Sighing heavily, Draco called for Riply. The elf immediately popped into the room looking worried and sad at hearing the boy’s cries.
“Shall Misters Ciel be joining us for class??”
Draco shook his head. “No. I’m going to watch him today. Would you please ask for Minerva to join me here promptly? I must speak with her before classes start this morning.”
“As you wish sir. Riply happy to help.” The elf popped out of the room.
While Draco waited for Minerva to arrive, he held his son as tightly as he could, making a silent vow to never let his son go. By the time there was a knock on the main door, 20 minutes had gone by and Ciel’s loud wailing had trickled to small whimpers and on occasion a hic up. Luckily Draco, who had at one point maneuvered himself so he could lie down with his head resting on a pillow, could reach his wand and was able to open the door. The door opened to allow Minerva into the Potter/Malfoy chambers.
The witch walked in, an elegant eyebrow cocked up when her gaze fell upon the two forms on the couch. She came over and sat down in a chair next to the couch and rested her hand gently on Ciel’s head.
“I heard he was having some problems with the elves.” Her voice was soft and gentle.
For a second Ciel’s soft whimpers where the only sound in the room. Then silver eyes looked at her that seemed positively exhausted. “He’s having problems with everyone. Minerva I can’t make it to class today. I can’t leave him like this. I realize that you brought us here to teach and do our jobs. And as of late Harry and I have really left you hanging, with Harry getting injured and his coma and me having to leave class suddenly to tend to the boys. I truly am sorry. This behavior isn’t very conducive to a student’s learning.” If the blonde were being honest with himself, he was very close to just giving up his job right then and there. Despite what his students might think, he actually really liked teaching. But with Harry being out of commission, Draco had to be there for his kids and he couldn’t really do that while teaching and being away from them all day.
“When was the last time you slept?” The woman’s voice brought Draco out of his thoughts. He sighed heavily.
“I dont know. I’ve slept here and there but I haven’t had a good nights sleep since Saturday. Maybe it was a bad idea to have hired us.” Draco heard the words coming from his lips before they registered in his mind.
He wasn’t paying attention to the Head Mistress otherwise he would have seen her smile warmly at the blonde. She moved her hand to pat Draco kindly on his head.
“Please dont take this the wrong way Draco, but I never thought you’d ever be capable of thinking so selflessly of others.” Standing up, leaned down and placed a kiss on the still whimpering child’s head and patted Draco’s head once more before making her way back to the door, “Dont worry about you’re jobs Draco. I knew exactly what I was getting in to when I hired the two of you. Neither of you have every been able to go a single year at this school without something going wrong for you.” She stopped at the door and looked back at Draco, “Dont forget to hang in there Draco. He will wake up. His body just needs some time.” When he nodded in response to her, she left the room closing the door behind her. As soon as it was clear that Harry would not wake up right away, Draco had informed Minverva of Harry’s condition. Both of his coma and of his pregnancy. He’d wanted to tell her with Harry beside him but considering the circumstances he figured Harry would forgive him spilling the news without him.
Draco tightened his hold on his son, pressing his face momentarily in his hair, “I’m so sorry your world has been falling to pieces little dragon.” Ciel didn’t respond but Draco felt small hands fist in the fabric of his shirt. Resting his head back on the pillow, Draco listened to Ciel breathe in and out as the boy became too tired from his outburst to stay awake. It wasn’t long of listening to Ciel’s deep breaths before it became almost hypnotic and Draco found himself falling into complete darkness.
~~
When his eyes opened he felt like he could take on the world. He’d expected to feel sore but there was no trace of soreness anywhere in his body as he stretched and looked about the room. Harry sat up and continued his inspection of his bedroom noticing that the clock on his nightstand read a little after 12pm. Finding that no one was around, he pulled the covers off of him and swung his legs over the edge of the bed. He’d never felt so rested and rejuvenated, at least thats what he thought until he tried to stand up. A small yelp escaped his lips on his way to the floor as his legs gave out. Glaring at his legs he stretched them out and rubbed them a bit before trying the whole standing process once again. This time his legs held. Grumbling to himself despite feeling really good, Harry walked over to the bathroom and took a quick shower. He took his time showering to make sure all the grime he felt was gone. When he got out, he again took his time getting dried off and dressed though he got dressed in more lounge type clothes than clothes meant for going out and about. He figured that it didn’t matter that he was feeling really good, since the accident had only been a few days before he didn’t want to push his luck and push his body too hard.
As he put on his t-shirt he let his hand set on his abdomen, smiling as he thought about the life form growing inside of him. He wasn’t quite sure why but he felt like their newest member was doing just as good as he was feeling. Stretching one more time, he finally left the bedroom intent on getting some food. He was ravenous. Food was on the forefront of his mind when he came across Ciel and Draco sleeping on the couch. At first glance he smiled at how adorable they looked with Ciel completely passed out on top of a slumbering Draco. As he approached the table, food magically appeared and Harry silently thanked his good luck on waking when lunch was being served. With a plate in hand Harry piled a mass amount of food onto his plate and immediately began devouring some of it. After initially stuffing his face, Harry moved to sit on the couch opposite the one Draco and Ciel were sleeping on and made himself comfortable. His good mood however quickly faded when he really looked at the pair. Ciel’s eyes were red and swollen and his tiny face was set in a scowl whereas Draco looked a bit pale, there were creases around his eyes and forehead, dark circles under his eyes and it even looked as if he was a bit thin.
“What the hell happened last night” Harry mumbled in alarm to himself. He placed his plate on a table and knelt beside Draco and Ciel. One hand rested on the blonde’s shoulder and gently shook. Eyes fluttered momentarily before opening. Draco turned his head to see who had woken him up and when his eyes landed on Harry his eyes grew wide in surprise.
“Harry!” Draco finally exclaimed. One of his arms let go of Ciel and reached for Harry, gripping the man by the nape of his neck. This time when he spoke, his voice was low so as not to wake up the sleeping child. “You’re awake.”
Harry frowned, resting one of his own hands on top on Draco’s, “Of course I’m awake. I only slept in till noon ya know.” He pointed towards Ciel and to Draco’s face, his voice as quiet as the blonde’s, “What happened here? You both look terrible. Did something happen last night?”
It was Draco’s turn to frown, “Harry…” Draco ran a hand through the brunette’s hair lovingly, “You’ve been asleep for four days.”
“What are you talking about?” Harry scoffed.
“I mean it. You’ve been asleep for four days. You experienced a massive magical overload and Jagra said your body put you to sleep until your body knew what to do with it all.” Draco closed his eyes as his whole being was flooded with relief, “Merlin Harry. You’re awake.” He pulled on Harry’s neck until he drew the man in close enough to press their lips together. As gentle as it was, Draco imparted all of his love and relief at having Harry awake and moving about again. When Draco let Harry go, Harry ran a hand over Draco’s face.
“I’m sorry I’ve been away so long. I’ve really put alot of stress on you haven’t I? You don’t look you’ve been sleeping or eating.”
“Mm” Silver eyes retreated behind heavy eyelids momentarily before opening again, “It’s been a rough couple days. This one,” Draco pointed at Ciel, “hasn’t been taking your absence very well. This morning we experienced a complete meltdown.” The blonde sighed, closing his eyes once again, “He’s really missed you. We all have.” When he opened his eyes once again he nearly smacked himself, his words had caused Harry to feel immensely guilty. “Hey. Quit that,” he said sternly, locking eyes with Harry, “You didn’t do anything wrong so dont go getting a Gryffindor complex. It’s not allowed do you understand me? Besides, I’ve had the chance to understand a little bit of what it’s like to be a single parent.” His eyes turned pleading, “Dont make me do that again? I dont know how you did it and lived to tell about it. I’ve only had four days and I swear Harry. These little ogres have nearly made me go grey before my time!” His over exaggeration made Harry’s guilt seep away and chuckled.
“They can be a handful. But have they really been that bad for you?” Harry glanced at Ciel disapprovingly.
“You wouldn’t believe it. I’m sure everything will return to normal though now that you’re among the living.” Draco dropped the hand still holding Harry’s neck and rested it on Harry’s stomach. “You look better. How are you feeling? How’s the baby?”
The brunette smiled happily, “I feel better. I dont even feel sore or anything. As for the baby, the baby is doing just fine.”
“Good. You bloody well be fine after all of that. Harry,” Draco glanced down at Ciel to make sure the boy was still asleep before continuing, “We have a few things to discuss. I found out a few things while you were asleep that I think you should know.”
Shaking his head, Harry took Draco’s hand and placed it back on Ciel’s back. “Nope. Not right now. I dont know how long you’ve been sleeping this morning but you look like you could use a few more hours of sleep. Go back to sleeping alongside your son. Moments like that wont last forever.” He leaned in and kissed Draco firmly before standing up and reaching for his plate. “We’ll talk when you wake up. I’ll be here when you both wake up. Promise.” Draco watched as Harry picked up a plate loaded with food and sat in the chair next to the couch and began eating. It just so happened that at that moment Maka came back from her hunt and wizard and snake dropped into a quiet yet pretty animated discussion about something Draco couldn’t decipher. But Harry made no move to get up and Draco figured he was quite content to sit there for hours and not move away from them. Feeling like that is just what the brunette would do, Draco for the first time felt relaxed as he fell back to sleep.
~~~~~
Once Harry had woken up, the two adults didn’t get the chance to talk one on one for the next couple days. Between their friends, the children’s constant attachment to Harry’s leg, relieved students at getting their teacher back and Jagra visiting for multiple times a day the two weren’t able to just be alone. The weekend came and the amount of people that showed up at their chambers frustrated Draco to the point where he found himself escaping to his office to grade some horrendously written essays. He understood that Harry was loved by many and that they had all been worried about him while he was sick. And that understanding was the only reason he hadn’t kicked everyone out of their living courters. He was grumbling while grading a particularly poorly written essay when the door to his office opened up.
He was so focused on tearing the essay apart via written comments that he didn’t notice until there were firm hands that gripped his shoulders. The blonde jumped until those hands began massaging the muscles. As soon as the muscles in his shoulders began loosening, Draco sighed and closed his eyes reveling in those magic fingers.
“Merlin Draco. You need to relax.” Warm lips fluttered against Draco’s ear.
Turning his head, he looked over his shoulder at Harry. “Where is your entourage?”
Emerald green eyes sparkled with amusement, “You’re not jealous are you?”
Draco glared at Harry, turning his gaze back to the essay he’d been grading. “I dont get jealous.”
“Mm. I see.” Harry dragged Draco’s chair back, until there was enough room for him to come around and straddle Draco’s lap, facing the man. Once settled, Harry placed a few feather light kisses on Draco’s lips before sitting back with a small smile. “Dont be jealous. They are just concerned. The majority of them dont know about the baby yet so they dont understand what happened. Anyways, Hermione is with Maka and the boys and I’ve been able to slip away from everyone else so why dont you tell me what’s got you so wired. You’ve been like a razorback chomping on a chain to get free.”
He sat back in his chair and looked at Harry, contemplating actually telling the man. Would it really make a difference? Even if it didn’t, that marriage certificate that he kept in his pocket was practically burning a hole in there. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out the folded piece of parchment and looked at it for a second or two.
“I had a conversation with Miss. Brown on Monday and it was enlightening to say the least. She told me a few things that I’ve found to be true after I did my own research. And I’m not entirely certain what you’re gonna think.”
Emerald eyes bore into silver, “You make it sound like this is something huge. Is it bigger than me being pregnant. Again?”
Draco shrugged, “It could be. Depending on how you wanna take it I suppose.” He handed the certificate over to Harry who unfolded it and stared at the writing on the front. The silence was nearly deafening as the minutes rolled on, Harry’s eyes wide as he read over the contents repeatedly. Draco kept his eyes trained on Harry’s face, trying to gauge what the other man was thinking. The only emotion Harry betrayed was shock. The small box Draco had shoved the guilt he felt for having left Harry back then started rattle inside of him again. He knew that it wasn’t his fault, for neither of them knew that it was possible to conceive a child between the two of them let alone what that would signify for their relationship. But it didn’t stop the guilt that according to this, roughly five years ago now they were married and he had left his husband on his own to raise two children for four of those years. It would also mean that the flings he’d had abroad made him a cheater. Everything about the situation grated on his pureblood upbringing. It wasn’t acceptable for a husband to have affairs and it wasn’t acceptable for a husband to knock up their partner and then leave. When his mother found out she was going to rip him to pieces for his behavior.
The moment dragged on until Draco couldn’t take it any longer. He moved his hands to Harry’s hips and gently squeezed. This effectively got the brunette’s attention as his eyes darted back to Draco. Draco must have been making a face for Harry’s shocked expression turned thoughtful. Those bright eyes seemed to search Draco’s face and eyes, practically delving down into the blonde’s very soul looking for an answer. Then out of nowhere Harry burst out in a fit of laughter. His hands forewent holding onto the certificate to wrap around his abdomen as he nearly doubled over in his mirth. Needless to say this wasn’t the reaction Draco had been anticipating.
It wasn’t until he saw Harry crying due to all of his laughter that he scowled. What the hell was so funny about this situation. And he was going to say just that!
“Bloody hell Harry! What the devil are you laughing at?!” he growled. It didn’t seem like laughter at this moment was very appropriate. It took a few moments before Harry could control himself enough to speak.
“I’m sorry. I swear, I’m not laughing at you. But holy Merlin! This is funny.” At the indignant look in Draco’s eyes Harry continued, “I’m serious. This would happen to us.” The brunette started chuckling, wiping the tears from his eyes.
The statement didn’t budge the scowl Draco was sporting.
“Sure sure. Go ahead and think it’s funny.”
“Oh don’t pout.” Harry softly chided, leaning in for a swift kiss. Teasingly he said, “Draco Malfoy. You’re pureblood pride is showing”
“I beg your pardon!” Draco exclaimed. The phrase made Harry giggle some more.
“If this is real,” Harry held up the certificate, “by the look on your face right now and with how tense those shoulders were a moment ago, you’re thinking you betrayed our marriage aren’t you?” The triumphant smirk on Harry’s face nearly made Draco punch him. Instead of offering up any acknowledgments for Harry’s irritating although accurate assessment Draco shot the brunette his iciest glare. Unfortunately Harry wasn’t at all deterred by it. More rather he found the glare quite endearing. “I’ll take you’re silence as a yes,” he completely ignored the daggers that joined the blizzard the blonde was staring his way, “but as far as I’m concerned, both of us get a free pass. We didn’t know about this,” Harry flapped the certificate in front of Draco’s face, “Didn’t I tell you once that we don’t ease into anything? It’s just not how you and I function together. And I dont know about you, but I find it rather exciting to think that I’ve been dating my husband this whole time.”
Draco’s shoulders slumped in defeat, “I suppose you’re right. And I suppose there is no need for a wedding then.”
Brunette eyebrows rose a fraction, “You were really looking forward to that wedding weren’t you?”
Silver eyes sparkled for a moment, “Of course. That wedding would have allowed me to rub it into everyone’s face that I, an ex-Death Eater snatched up their beloved Chosen One and made him mine.”
“Sounds like quite the affair,” Harry mused. He tilted his head a smidge in thought. “You know, there is no reason why we can’t have that wedding Draco. We can throw it as if its our first but since this,” Harry once again flapped the certificate around, “makes the bonding part no longer required, you and I can treat this as a vow renewal.” Even though the thought of making some big to do for a wedding wasn’t really something Harry was interested in, the smile the suggestion brought to Draco’s face was worth any discomfort Harry might feel. Silver eyes gleamed brilliantly, making Harry’s breath labored.
Draco leaned in and started kissing Harry quite passionately. Whether it was intended or not, Harry immediately became hard and his skin grew sensitive. Hands ran up and down Harry’s sides over the man’s clothes. It didn’t take long before Draco had cleared his desk and had Harry naked and laying on top of his desk. Nearly an afterthought, Draco managed to lock his office door so they wouldn’t be disturbed. With Harry’s body producing his own slick, it didn’t take much to make him ready. Draco made love to Harry on his desk, his hands skimming over tanned skin leaving no spot untouched. He had been too focused on watching Harry’s face as the man writhed underneath Draco that he nearly came on the spot when his eyes drifted down to gaze upon Harry’s stomach. The man’s taut abdominal muscles were no longer visible having been replaced with a small but very visible mound. If a person didn’t know that Harry kept a decent six pack on a regular basis, they would have just thought Harry had eaten one too many bags of sweets with no exercise. But Draco knew better. There was a baby right there and it was getting bigger. Knowing there was no way he’d last long while gazing at Harry’s stomach, Draco gripped Harry’s cock and starting fisting the appendage. Not two seconds later, Harry came all over his and Draco’s chests while his contracting muscles pulled Draco’s own orgasm from his body. As Draco came inside of Harry, there was yet another surge of magic leaving Draco’s body and entering the brunette’s. However, both men were thankful that the magical transfer was nowhere near as intense or massive as the first time.
Their high faded gradually, bringing them back to their senses. Draco rested his hand on Harry’s stomach, once again admiring the small bump that was forming there. Harry propped himself up on his elbows so he could also look down at his stomach. Draco chuckled lightly at the man’s slight surprise.
“What’s that face for? Didn’t you notice that you’re starting to show.”
Harry shook his head. “Last time there wasn’t so much as a small bump until I was about 12 weeks. And then I really looked pregnant by my 14th or 15th week. I’m only,” Harry paused to calculate, “7 weeks or so. I’m just surprised its starting so soon.” The brunette lightly poked a part of his stomach that wasn’t covered with Draco’s hand.
“It’s a Malfoy. It just wants to make its presence known!” Draco proclaimed with pride. Harry rolled his eyes, moaning lightly as Draco pulled out of his body leaving him feeling empty and full at the same time. The two cleaned up and got dressed. On their way back to their chambers, Harry slipped his hands into Draco’s so they could link fingers. As they walked back, a thought occurred to Harry.
“You told the boys about the baby didn’t you??”
“Why would I do that?” Draco’s response was hesitant and curious, “Shouldn’t that be a discussion we have as a family?” Draco describing them as a family with such definitiveness made Harry feel warm and fuzzy inside. He loved that word on the blonde’s lips.
“You’re right. I’m sure it will go smoother if the both of us are there. We really should do that tonight. If I’m already starting to grow a bump then sooner they know the better.”
“Yes. We’ll tell them tonight.”
~~~~~
“Come one you two time for bed!” Harry called as he put away the kids’ coloring supplies which had taken over the large coffee table between the couches and fireplace. Both boys sprinted out of the room, pretending to be dragons soaring through the ‘air’. The two so called dragons raced over and threw themselves at Harry’s legs.
Teddy looked up at Harry, “Can we camp tonight Daddy?”
“What do you mean by camp?” Draco asked as he walked out of his and Harry’s bedroom and into the living room wearing only slightly too big pj pants.
Harry contemplated it for a moment, nodding his head slowly, “I suppose we could do that. We haven’t gone camping in a long time.”
Draco scowled, his voice definitive, “I’m not sleeping outside.” The brunette shook his head.
“No no. We wont be sleeping outside.” Harry turned to Maka who had been following behind Harry as he’d walked about. “You might want to sleep on your warming rock tonight. There’s gonna be a lot of squirming bodies out here tonight.”
The snake nodded in her own way, “I’d rather stay with the nest ”
“Yeah Daddy! Bring Maka’s rock out here!” Ciel interjected. Harry shrugged his shoulders.
“Alright, alright. Whatever. Ok everyone stand back for a second.” The boys squealed as they ran to the wall closes to their bedroom door promptly followed by Draco as he watched Harry closely. Harry had been quite thankful to find his magic had been restored after his long slumber so when he used magic now it felt like he was pleasantly stretching muscles he hadn’t used in a while. Waving his hands the room transfigured itself until the couches were no longer there but were replaced with a massive mattress that was covered with blankets and pillows. A sheer canopy had also been transfigured over the bed as if it were a tent. Harry had even managed to transfigure a large warming rock off to the side where there was no risk of Maka getting rolled over on during the night. Once Harry was done transfiguring the room practically into one massive mattress, the boys screamed as they crawled under the canopy and began jumping up and down all over it. Smiling at the boy’s enthusiasm, Harry crawled under the canopy himself with Maka wrapped around his shoulders and started to rearrange the pillows. The snake slithered down and over to coil herself on the rock.
“Come on Draco. We’re gonna camp out in the living room tonight in one massive sleep pile.”
“How is this any different than all of us sleeping in our bed?” Draco asked skeptically.
Harry shrugged, “I dont know. But it’s far more fun. And much more room. Come on.” He magically lifted one side of the canopy until Draco reluctantly came under it. Harry then finished arranging the pillows so Draco and himself could be propped up against a bunch of them comfortably. His next task was to turn off all the lights and magic just enough floating candles to see adequately with. Draco came to sit next to him, pulling the brunette close so he could wrap his arms around him while they watched the boys jump.
After a few moments Harry cleared his throat, “Hey boy. Your Papa and I have a few things to discuss with you. Would you both come here??” Harry patted the space right in front of the two. Seeing the look on Harry’s face, the boys immediately came over and sat cross legged, their big eyes trained on their father. The two adults also sat up until they were sitting cross legged. Making sure he had their full attention Harry began, “I know there has been a lot of things happening lately. And some of those things have been a bit scary. I am truly sorry for that. You both have been brave and I am very proud of you. Now, there are going to be some more changes in our lives. Some pretty big changes in fact and Papa and I want to make sure you understand it all. Ok?” The two boys looked at each other then turned anxious eyes back to Harry who quickly shook his head, “It’s nothing bad. At least I hope you’ll be as excited as we are.” Emerald eyes glanced over to Draco.
The anxiousness the two displayed seemed to slip away at Harry’s quick words. Teddy tilted his head in confusion.
“What’s happening Daddy?”
“Well,” Harry paused, taking Draco’s hand, “First of all, what’s everyone’s vote on Papa? Do we like him? Should we keep him around? All in favor say Aye!” A happy chorus of ‘Aye’s’ echoed throughout the room. Draco couldn’t stop himself from rolling his eyes, a smile tugging at the corner of his lips at the childish way of asking the question. Chuckling, Harry continued, “Good. I’m glad to hear that. Because quite frankly your Papa and I have gotten ourselves married.” Two sets of small sparkling eyes landed on Draco and in an instant Draco found himself body slammed by the owners of those eyes. They cheered loudly while their arms wrapped Draco in massive bear hugs. Draco chuckled, feeling intense happiness flood every part of his body. The boys’ warm reaction to the new information was by all means uplifting. It was a far better reaction than he was expecting if he were being honest.
“Now now boys!” Harry laughed, trying to get their attention once more. It took a few extra calls for attention before the boys finally settled down again, however this time they settled in Draco’s lap with huge smiles on their face.
“We have proper daddys now!” Teddy whispered rather loudly to his brother. The comment made the two adults smile at each other.
“Are you ready for the other part we need to discuss with you?” Draco asked patiently.
“Yes Papa! We ready!” Ciel exclaimed.
Harry took a big breath. This next part was where things could get rough. He’d read that it wasn’t uncommon for older siblings to become jealous and he honestly didn’t know which way his sons would fall. Seeing Harry’s hesitation Draco started this time.
“Do you two like having a brother?” The two boys looked at each other for a moment before nodded.
“Sometimes I dont like having a little brother because he cries and isn’t nice sometimes. But most of the time I like it!” Teddy chimed in. Draco repressed a laugh, for Teddy cried just as much as Ciel did, if not more. Ciel just shrugged his shoulders.
“I like having a brother. We get to play together” The smaller boy commented.
“I’m glad to hear that you like having a sibling cause it seems like you are going to have a new brother or sister to play with soon.” Harry blurted out the words, subconsciously resting a hand on his stomach. Two sets of eyes widened almost comically.
“How!” Ciel cried out excitedly, bouncing in Draco’s lap. “When does our brother come to play!”
Teddy looked up at Draco, eyes contemplating before turning back to gaze at Harry. The brunette pointed to his tummy. “Do you boys remember how I told you that Ciel lived in here for a while?” They both nodded, “You’re new brother or sister has to live in here for a little while just like Ciel did. When they are ready they will be able to come play with you but we have to be patient.” Ciel was clearly excited as he crawled out of Draco’s lap and into Harry’s where he rested his hand on top of Harry’s.
“Our brother lives in here??” Ciel’s voice was fascinated.
Draco smirked, “It could be a sister too Ciel.”
“I want a sister.” Teddy declared. All eyes looked to him. The boy flushed at the sudden attention. Shrugging he stated, “I wouldn’t mind having a baby sister.”
Harry laughed, “You’re right Teddy. Having a girl around here wouldn’t be so bad.” Smiling warmly Harry made eye contact with each of his sons, “Are you both good with this? I dont want either you to think that with this new baby coming that either of you are being replaced or will be loved any less.”
“There’s no way we could love you boys any less!” Draco proclaimed, wrapping his arms tightly around Teddy who was still sitting in his lap. He placed a sloppy kiss on the boy’s cheek, pulling a shy giggle from the boy.
“Babies come when mommies and daddies love each other right?” Teddy asked curiously, “That’s what Sybil said when we played with the puppies.” Teddy turned curious eyes at Draco.
The blonde’s eyebrows rose incredibly high on his forehead. “Well, yes that is true.”
The boy frowned, “But we have two daddies. Sybil didn’t say babies come when daddies love each other.”
Harry smiled lovingly, his oldest son was incredibly smart, “You’re right. She wouldn’t have said that. Remember how I’ve told you boys that there are two groups of people in this world? There is the magical world where wizards and witches live, that’s the world we live in. But theres also the muggle world. The people who dont know magic exists. Sybil lives in the muggle world. She doesn’t know that in the magical world, the world we live in, that when two daddies love each other babies are sometimes made. But we aren’t going to tell Sybil or anyone at the daycare do you boys understand?? We are not allowed to tell those in the muggle world about the magic. Ok??” When both boys nodded their understanding, Harry moved Ciel so he sat next to him. “Alright you two, one more thing before we go to bed. I really want the both of you to come talk with me or Papa if you afraid or uncertain or angry or anything about these big changes. Please dont hide those icky feelings if they show up.”
Teddy and Ciel stood up and hugged Harry around the neck. Each kissing the brunette’s cheek.
“We’ll tell Daddy. Promise.” Ciel stated proudly. He turned and jumped on Draco, wrapping his arms around Draco’s neck, “I love you Papa!!”
Draco genuinely smiled, “I love you too Ciel.” He extended an arm out to Teddy who immediately joined in.
“I love you Papa” Teddy muttered, his word barely audible for he buried his face in Draco’s neck.
“I love you too Teddy.” Draco pressed a kiss to each cheek before letting them go. “Ok. Now to bed you two.” The four of them rearranged pillows and blankets. Harry and Draco found themselves unable to sleep directly next to each other for Ciel had curled up next to Harry while Teddy on his other side was curling up next to Draco. There was a slight moment of shared disappointment at not being able to sleep in each other’s arms but they managed to extend a hand and link fingers. It didn’t take long for the kids to fall asleep leaving the adults wide awake. They looked at each other for quite some times before Harry rolled onto his back, gazing up at the canopy.
“That went far better than I was expecting.” Harry said, keeping his voice low.
Draco kept his eyes fixed on Harry, “Why do you say that?”
“There has been so much change in their lives in such a short amount of time I just figured maybe this would be their limit.” That statement made Draco roll his eyes.
“Harry. Those boys are our sons. They are strong and they can learn to be flexible. As long as we stay together as a family then they can get through anything.” His words brought emerald eyes to gaze upon him.
The brunette smiled happily, squeezing Draco’s hand in his own. “You’re my husband Draco Malfoy”
Draco chuckled softly, squeezing back, “And you’re mine. You know Harry, the school has this next week off due to it being Easter and all. You and I should go shopping Monday. Being husbands and all we need to purchase some rings.” Silver eyes sparkled at the prospect of shopping for wedding bands with Harry.
The look made Harry chuckle, “Alright alright we can go shopping for wedding bands. But we need to visit your mother first.”
Draco frowned, “Why would we need to visit my mother first?”
Emerald eyes gave him the ‘you’re seriously asking me that?’ look.
“Really Draco. We went on our first date and things were blown up all over the Daily Prophet. Can you imagine what will happen when they see us buying rings for each other? Need I remind you how pissed off your mother was?” The blonde nodded in agreement.
“We need to visit my mother.”
“Yes we do.” They shared a smile and spent another hour or so talking about what kind of rings they might like to have.
