Time to reconcile and put old grudges to rest
Severus woke up with a loud scream escaping his lips. Covered in sweat, he quickly opened his eyes. – “Nagini, kill” still ringing in his ears. With his heart loudly pounding in his chest, he looked around. – “Hermione?” Where is she? He reached out for the glass of water, on the table, by the side of his bed and found a note. “Went home to freshen up and change. See you after lunch. Yours, Hermione.” “Yours”, that sounded nice. He exhaled and traced the letters with his fingers. “Yours”. Was it just a figure of speech? Most probably. She obviously couldn’t have the same feelings for him as, she had two years ago. And why would she? Back then, she was just a little girl, having her first crush. What was she now? Seventeen. Still very young, but she surely grew up a lot. Her hair wasn’t wild and frizzy anymore, it cascaded over her shoulders, falling gracefully like a wave, just a little lower shoulder blades. Her face got a little thinner, probably because of stress and not having enough sleep. And her big hazel eyes, now seemed even bigger. Little cute mouth with a swollen lower lip, from constant biting. He smiled. She always had that habit, even when she was a kid. From shoulders down, she was … he swallowed hard, trying to find the right word to describe her. Exquisite. Yes, that sounded just right.
She was never big chested, but now, they grew into a beautiful globes that he’d be able to hold with the palm of his hand. Just the right size. Her thin waist curved down into a perfectly round bottom with long thin legs. He closed his eyes, as his mind immediately drew a picture of her naked, with those long legs wrapped around him and her breasts pressed tightly against his chest. He took a deep breath. Yeah, she was definitely not a little girl anymore. Loud knock on the door, made image of her disappear. He wrinkled his nose “Enter”. – “Hello, professor.” – “Potter? What in a Merlin’s arse are you doing here?” Harry shrugged his shoulders – “Just wanted to check on you. Are you feeling better?” – “I feel as good as one can, after being in coma for two weeks.” He rose his eyebrows when Harry landed himself on the chair by the bed. “Anything else?” Harry took a deep breath. This was not going to be easy. – “Yeah, I … I wanted to apologize.” – “What in the world for?” – “For leaving you there that day, for acting the way I always did, for everything actually.” Severus couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Was the boy mad? – “Tell me Potter, truthfully, are you going down with some sort of madness? Because if that’s the case, you’re definitely in the right place. Most of the doctors here are pretty competent.” Harry looked at him and blinked a few times. – “No, sir. I just simply wanted to apologize, that’s all.” Severus made a dismissive gesture with his hand – “Apology accepted. Now, Mr. Potter if there’s no further need of you imposing on my person any longer, I suggest you take your leave and let me rest.” Harry took one long look at him and nodded. – “Of course, sir. Sorry for bothering you.” He turned on his heel and walked to the door.
Something strange was in the boy’s look, Severus thought. Something not as arrogant. Something … humble. Oh fuck, I’m ether getting old or I’m still drugged up from all the medication they’ve been giving me. He turned his head towards the door – “Potter, wait.” Harry turned around – “Yes, professor?” – “What, nothing good to retort with?” he sneered and curled up his lips into a half smile. Harry starred at him with his mouth agape, not being able to say a single word. Did he just hear Snape making a joke? He rubbed his eyes and blinked a few times. – “Oh, for fuck’s sake Potter, will you close your mouth already, or are you determined to catch a fly?” – “No, sir. I… I was just…” he smiled and walked back to the chair. “Sorry, I guess I’m just not used to hear you making jokes.” – “I suppose not.” They both stayed quiet for some time.
Harry ran his fingers through his hair and put his hand on the back of his neck. - “Are you planning to go back to teaching potions, professor?” – “Yes. And since Hogwarts is somewhat understaffed this year, I’ll be partially taking over DADA classes.” – “Will you be offering any apprenticeships?” Severus razed his eyebrows – “Don’t tell me you want to teach potions, Potter.” Harry smiled and shook his head – “No, sir. As much enjoyment as your classes always were, I was asking for someone else.” – “Thank Gods. I don’t think I could survive through something like that.” Harry smiled, he definitely liked this Snape more. He was as snarky and sarcastic as ever, but his words were no longer offensive. He seemed more relaxed and friendly, and almost…human. – “So, who did you have in mind?” – “Well, I was thinking about Draco, sir. Until the trial is over, he doesn’t really have a lot of options.” – “Yes, he told me yesterday about their current situation. I suppose there’s no reason why I wouldn’t be able to offer it to him. He passed potions with high scores. I’ll talk to Dumbledore about it and I’m sure we’ll be able to arrange something.” – “Thank you, professor. It means a lot.” Severus nodded. “Can I ask you for something else, sir?” Severus made a proceeding gesture with his hand. Harry pinched a bridge of his nose and took a deep breath, trying to find the right words. “Did Draco tell you about us, sir?” – “Yes. It came as a bit of a surprise, but I suppose, as muggles say, the line between love and hate is really thin. Though I would assume, Lucius was not too thrilled to learn about it.” – “Yeah, that’s the thing, actually. He doesn’t know yet. I mean, Draco was going to talk to him about it today, but I guess we both know how that’s gonna end.” He ran his hand through his hair. “I guess, Lucius always expected Draco to get married to a pure blood witch and give him an heir. And Draco says that he doesn’t care about what his father thinks, but I know that he does. He just doesn’t want to upset me. I was thinking that maybe you could talk to him. You know, being Draco’s godfather and all.” – “You want me, to talk to Lucius?” Harry raised his head and looked the older man in the eyes. – “Yeah… if you don’t mind.”
Severus shook his head. – “If he is still the same Lucius I remember, then just talking to him, is not going to do much. He doesn’t respond well to that. But it also doesn’t mean that he doesn’t want Draco to be happy.” He watched Harry’s face fall – “Just not with me, right?” – “You have to understand. Their family is one of the oldest and most influential ones, which was the reason why Voldemort needed them in the first place. They have their own customs and laws. Lucius obeys them just like his father did and the rest of his ancestors. For a family blood line to continue, the boy is expected to marry to a pure blood and produce an heir. I suppose their customs are very similar to our own. Neglecting one of them, would be as if announcing that you don’t want to be a wizard anymore.” – “So, for Draco to be with me, it wouldn’t only mean going against his father’s wishes, it would be like breaking the law?” Severus nodded. His face was as unreadable as ever. He looked at Harry. The boy was trying to look calm, but his nervousness was too obvious to hide. – “So that’s it then, right? There’s no way Lucius would ever agree to that and if Draco goes against him, it would make him a traitor to his own kind. Wonderful!”
What was it in this boy that made him feel the way he did now? Was it compassion? Guilt? Or just a simple understanding of wanting to be with the one person you could never be with. – “Look, it’s not entirely all as bad as you think.” Harry looked at him with so much hope in his eyes, like his whole life depended on the next thing his former professor was about to say. “You have to use your logic. What is it that Lucius expects from Draco?” Harry looked at him with wide eyes not answering the question. – “Come on Potter, don’t make me question your intelligence.” – “To marry a pure blood witch and produce an heir, sir.” Snape shook his head and breathed out with a bit of irritation. – “Your listening skills are just as bad as they were in the classroom. I said, Draco is supposed to marry a pure blood. I never mentioned that it has to be a witch.”- “But…but…I’m not… I don’t understand, sir.” – “That much I figured.” –“Professor, are you saying that there might be a way around it?” Snape nodded. – “Your mother, Potter was a witch. A muggle born witch, but a witch nevertheless. Your father was a pure blood wizard. Your blood seems pretty pure to me. Not entirely, but better than can be expected after the war.” Harry gave him a wry smile. – “I suppose that’s arguable, but how are we supposed to… you know?” – “Well, who wouldn’t be honored to have Harry Potter’s child?” – “But professor, it would have to be Draco’s and mine.” – “Then, I suggest you find a surrogate. With both of your DNA’s combined, the rest would be pretty easy.” – “Is that something that can really be done?” – “With the right potion and a few strong spells, I don’t see why not.”
“All I ever dreamt about, was to have a chance to somehow go back in time and meet him. Both of them. To make them proud.” He sobbed a little and wiped another tear from the side of his eye. “I understand that you did what you had to, because you gave your word to a woman you loved. But now, that you are finally free to live your own life the way you want, you still keep helping me.” He looked down and shook his head “Advise that you’ve given me, is the most… fatherly thing I have ever had. And when I told you how sorry I was for everything I did, I meant it.” His tears were falling freely now. Severus took one long look at the boy, trying to find the right words. Finally, he reached his hand out and brought Harry’s chin up, with his fingers. – “Harry… Look at me.” Harry gave him a surprised look, from hearing his former professor, calling him by his given name for the first time. “I did what I did, because I thought it was the right thing. And in the process, I let my hate for your father affect my judgement of you. It pleases me to see how wrong I was. I know that your mother would be very proud of you. And for what it’s worth… I am too.” Harry wiped up his tears and smiled – “Really?” – “Yes. And if you ever as much as breathe that to anyone, I’ll curse your arse so hard, that fighting the Dark Lord will seem like a walk in the park. Do I make myself clear?” - “Yes, professor.”
