Harry sat up as he clutched his glasses and his wand. He blurrily looked around for a moment. The sun was starting to rise when he heard that sound again.
That groaning sound and it was inside the shuttered store he was sleeping in. His heart pounded in his chest.
Hermione knew it too. Or at least suspected what he did as well. Until, he had proof however it was just a guess.
Harry dressed quickly and he exited his tent wand extended. “Lumos!” He whispered as he crept softly about. The wandlight showing no moment within this furniture store with the fireplace. That groan issued from Argus’s tent.
It sounded like Argus was in pain. Harry’s heart was pumping, He thought that they were safe.
Harry hesitantly opened Argus’s tent flap with a hand ready for anything. There was Argus on his haunches impaled in his bum by his wand. He didn’t seem to be in pain.
Harry immediately regretted walking into Argus’s tent. This was clearly an adult situation.
and fuck... He needed an adult or Dumbledore or both. But, here he was without either.Ooooh boy. Harry respectfully looked away. Should he say something? Should he just walk backards and pretend he saw nothing?
Harry was both the leader and the ball and chain of this merry little band. Harry was going to have to tell Hermione. Preferably, before she figured it out herself. Harry was ironically glad he remembered he needed to talk to Hermione. Posthaste.
Harry took a deep breath and Argus moaned as he cried out with obvious delight and Harry backpedaled as quickly as he dared without tripping.
The tent flaps flopped together and Harry was suddenly very interested in the racks of various stuff. Yep, Totally into whatever the hell this three in one slicing, dicing and pressing machine was.
And who could live without the incredibly important nonstick copper pans? Or the flawless stone cutting board with bright colored letters stating it was one hundred precent hypoallergenic.
Harry hoped Argus at least washed his wand when he was done. Not that he saw anything of course he didn’t!
Harry closed his eyes and pushed the adult situation out of his mind and thought of happier days. The order members could send messages through their patronuses.
If Harry and Hermione had any chance at escaping this magical prison and the brands. They needed to figure it out.
“Expecto Patronum!” His silvery stag leapt from his wand and the aisle he was in was bathed in its silvery resplendence.
The stag trotted about.
“Can you wake Hermione for me,Please?” Harry asked his Patronus who cocked its head at him and simply trotted around him. Harry swore he heard his Patronus snort at him.
Harry rolled his eyes and smiled. The presence of his patronus made him feel better just being there with him.
Hermione deserved to know that her life did not come without cost. Harry strode to the shutters and found the large wand like winch and turned it.
Muggles were kinda cool if they could create things like these. Arthur Weasley was right to be fascinated by their nonmagical kin. If only they didn’t get so murder happy at those who were different.
The world would be a much different place. Perhaps it would be better.
Harry liked to think that just a small change and perhaps the muggles could have prevented Voldermort’s rise entirely. Just a loud bang as a sniper caused Voldy’s head to explode like a melon subjected to bombarda.
It was a nice thought. Harry closed the door behind his Patronus as quietly as he could muster.
Harry tapped Hermione’s window through its shutter with his free hand. She had decided to sleep in the mall book store. He gradually got louder until he was sure she heard him.
Harry jumped as his Patronus brought up a hoof and banged it against the shutter. Harry immediately turned to shush his silvery stag.
It turned to look at him for a moment Harry thought nothing was going to happen. Glass shattered nosily as the Patronus promptly shoved his antlers straight through the glass.
Harry Potter swore that his Patronus grinned at him in a manner like Sirius. His patronus faded with a smug look on its face.
“Harry James Potter! Hermione whispered angrily. Harry shrugged and whispered the repairing charm as the shutter and doors flew open even as the window pane repaired itself.
Harry was contrite.
“We need to talk.” Harry stated. He was the leader now and he had to be the example. Hermione’s indignant look faded replaced by one of worry.
As she allowed him to pass as the doors and shutters closed behind him.
Harry paced for a bit. Trying to put his words in order so they made sense.
Hermione had made a nice stacked pile of books infront of her tent with more inside stacked to the ceiling.
“We have to assume these true inferi have magic of their own.” Harry stated as to the point as he could as he paced for a bit before he sat on Hermione’s bed.
She nodded. “We don’t have much proof.”
“We know the moment I called my patronus something felt different.” Harry replied. It would be foolish to assume anything about this magic of theirs. But to discount it would be falling into the same trap as discounting house elves.
“We know they are Dark things. Because of the way they react to being set on fire.” Harry reminded her.
Hermione sat down next to him and place her head and his shoulder.
“I’ll try to make sure to cast the patronus at least once a day.” She affirmed
“Did anyone in the order teach you have to communicate with the Patronus’s” Harry asked. There was always a chance that someone did.
“Afraid not, Harry” she responded. They lapsed into momentary silence.
“Well, we know its possible. I’m going to try to figure it out. It might be the only way to contact with people in the outside world. A way that the death eaters have no way to track” Harry responded.
“It could be dangerous.” Hermione warned. “I know-“ Harry sighed and he wanted to bolt. She was one of his best mates. There was no point in lying to her. The cleverest witch of his generation she would figure it out.
So he might as well be an adult about it.
“Because it might be the only way to get you out of here.” Harry whispered bluntly and softly. Harry felt her freeze.
“What do you mean? You’ve phrased it as if you can’t.” Hermione removed her head from his shoulder and took a step back from her bed to observe him.
Harry proudly showed off his right arm the brand of the lion proudly on his forearm. She looked at him shrewdly for a long moment of silence and her gaze went to his left arm. His always covered left arm.
“They were going to have you Kissed Hermione. They were going to make me watch.” Harry whispered. “Harry, What did you do?” Hermione asked.
“I only did what you or Ron would do.” Harry responded honestly. The words tasted as ash in his mouth, bitter and inedible.
Harry hid his left arm behind his back.
Hermione hand had lunged. “Harry James Potter. What did you Promise?!” The bushy haired witch practically gazed fire down upon him.
Harry sighed and got up and made to depart. Hermione drew her wand threateningly.
“You’re going to be mad regardless Hermione. There will be no secrets between best mates Hermione. We’ve been through too much.” Harry went silent for a long moment.
He was glad they were alone and that the tent gave them privacy.
“I can’t leave, Hermione.” He looked right into her eyes. “For that was the cost of your life Hermione!”
Harry slowly slid his jumper’s sleeve up. Hermione’s eyes widened distraught.
“Voldy is always going to know where I am. A price, That I will never be ashamed to pay and a mark that I will never be rid of. Something Voldy was all too happy to inform me.”
Harry felt haunted and yet he felt free.
“I thought you should know.” Harry stated as he pulled his left sleeve all the way up. Concealing the dark mark forced upon him.
Free yet bound. Or perhaps, Was it bound but free? Harry left without a word and Hermione let him go without a word.
Being an adult sucked and given the that a wizard’s life could be at least two centuries.
Harry supposed he might as well get used to it. His footsteps echoing in the mall’s corridors where throngs of muggles should be dwelling.
The world was ending but Harry had no regrets in doing what either of his best mates would do in his stead.
