Author’s Note: thank you for reading this far! I hope you all are enjoying it, and I promise that more steam is coming, just not this chapter. This is the long awaited conversation between Ron and Hermione, it’s laying groundwork for lots of smut to come! Hope you enjoy and please review! I can’t get better without feedback! Thank you!
Annecia89: Thank you so much, you have no idea how stressful it was to write lol. Also I’ve always wondered about Kreacher and what he ended up doing. It may be a small blurb for my own satisfaction, but I might bring him in more, since I’ve decided to keep Dobby’s death.

Lavender woke up in the common room curled up on a loveseat, a blanket draped around her, to someone shaking her. “Lavender, wake up.” Shake, shake. “Oi, Lavender wake up!” shake, shake. “Bloody Hell, girls.” SHAKE, SHAKE.
She flew up into a sitting position, eyes narrowed. “Ronald Weasley, you had better have a DAMN GOOD explanation as to why you aren’t letting me sleep!” she snapped. Her eyes gleamed, and for a brief moment Ron could have sworn her teeth were sharper, then again, she did always seem a little wolfish when she was angry.
“Hermione went back to her room last night, I need you to go wake her. I need to talk to her.”
Lavender fell back down on the loveseat, snuggling against the pillows. “If you want to talk to her, go talk to her. You don’t need me getting in the way.” She yawned, unconcerned with the nervous sweat that appeared on her ex-lover’s brow.
“I know I won’t be able to get in. I tried that years ago to talk to her. The stairs turned into a slide, remember?” he said hotly, his face flushing at the memory.
“Well why don’t you test it and see? Besides, there’s no stairs here.” Lavender asked, rolling over, her back towards him. It would be no use telling him that boys could go in, she had seen Theo and Daphne slip away last night into her room for some private time. Ron would never believe until he tried though.
“Like hell I will. Who knows what it could be this time. Please Lavender.” He started out sounding excessively annoyed, but begged the last part, in a soft, plaintive voice. “Just help me out.”
“Fine!” Lavender grumbled, tossing the blanket off of her and stomping towards the girls dorm. You owe me bigtime.”
“Sure, anything you want now hurry please.” He sounded slightly smug, but was more relieved than anything. He had been worried about how Lavender would treat this whole thing now that they weren’t shagging.
Lavender peeked into their room and saw Hermione sitting on her bed cross-legged, a book in her lap, and a hair brush going through her unruly hair as she read. As Lavender entered Hermione flicked a finger, turning the page with magic, no wand or physical contact needed. It was a small thing, but wandless nonverbal magic wasn’t easy, no matter what mundane task you wanted done.
She looked up at Lavender. “Morning. Sleep well?” she asked politely, not wanting to be rude, but seeing no reason to act like best friends. Lavender understood that.
“It would have been better if Ron, the tosser, wouldn’t have woken me up to come get you. He wants to see you. You have to stop avoiding him.” Lavender peered into her trunk, looking for her shower items while Hermione finished her hair.
“You’re right. But I have no idea what I’m going to say to him. That’s why I’m avoiding him. And I don’t want to hear what he has to say.”
Lavender shrugged. It was simple to her. “Look, despite what happened between him and me…do you still want to be with him?”
“No. Yes. No.” this was the first time Lavender had heard Hermione unsure. “If all this stuff,” she gestured to Lavender, “hadn’t happened between the two of you, I would say without a doubt…. Now…”
Lavender sighed. “This is going to sound harsh, but here it is. Hermione, it was going to happen. The moment you two were apart this summer, it was going to happen. If not me, then someone else. It wouldn’t have been on purpose, just like this wasn’t. But it would have come to pass the exact same way. The only difference, would have been if you found out or not. That’s it.”
Lavender slammed the lid of her trunk down. “Whatever you decide, Ron’s waiting. And maybe for once, don’t plan this one out.” Lavender headed for the lavatory, leaving Hermione a little dumbfounded, but with a new respect for the girl.
Hermione quickly dressed, opting for full school uniform and headed out the door to meet Ron, making sure her wand was in her pocket. Just in case.
Ron was pacing like a father in the delivery room when she appeared, and internally she flinched at how his face lit up when he saw her, but she kept her face impassive, gesturing towards the door, hoping not to disturb the few students who were still asleep in various positions around the common room.
Ron followed her out the door eagerly. “Let’s walk down by the lake Mione.” He took her hand, guiding her through Hogwarts, even though she arguably knew the school better than him. She didn’t pull her hand away, taking small comfort in his hand wrapped around hers.
The sun had risen by the time they reached the lake, and Ron spun around, encircling his arms around her in an embrace. Despite herself, she hugged him back. “Hermione please forgive me. What I did was stupid. I should have just come with you to Australia.”
“I invited you,” Hermione reminded him, his hands holding hers again. “Every week.”
“I know,” he grimaced. “I should have listened to my gut. Hermione, I love you. I’ve been in love with you for years.”
Those words warmed Hermione’s heart, and before she could stop herself, she blurted out, “I love you too Ron.” Ecstatic, Ron pulled her in for a kiss, holding her tightly to him. She wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him down to her height as she kissed him fervently.
It should have been bliss. Yet… it didn’t feel the same as the last time they kissed. There was no passion, no electricity. And she felt rather detached. Hermione abruptly pulled away and turned her back on him. “Ron, do you love me…or do you love the idea of me?”
He laughed. “Hermione, what kind of question is that?”
“Because I just figured out that I love the idea of you. You’re funny, clever, tall, and I find you so attractive. But if we were going to get together, wouldn’t we have done it before I left?” she didn’t look at him, so she didn’t see the contemplative look on his face.
“There wasn’t time…so much had happened.” Ron said quietly.
“There was time though… and wouldn’t it have been a good thing? Something to help heal the grief and tragedy?” Hermione finally turned to look at him.
“I dunno…I suppose…but I love you Hermione. I know that much.” He was stubborn this boy turned man.
“Do you? A man who loved me wouldn’t have started sleeping with someone else just because I wasn’t there. I think you like me, Ron. But not enough. And I like you. But not enough.”
Ron was disappointed, but decided to play his hand. “Hermione, like is enough for what I have in mind. Be my girlfriend?” he asked as he pulled out the muggle wand (improved by George Weasley) and made it turn into cloth flowers that actually gave off a scent.
Hermione smiled, but it slipped off her face. “I can’t. I spent all summer believing I was in love with you. I was heartbroken after seeing you with Lavender. But I’m starting to think I built all of this up too much. If nothing is actually here, it would waste our time. And it would hurt way more to try and fail than not try at all.”
Ron let the flowers fall from his hand and turned towards the lake, shoving his hands in his pockets. Hermione reached up to touch his shoulder, trying to provide the friendly comfort they had done so many times before.
Ron didn’t shrug her hand off, encouraging her. They stared at the lake for a few minutes, watching the water ripple. “Maybe someday we can try again Ron.” She said softly, unable to give up the idea of him in just a few minutes. “but I don’t want to lead you on. I want you to be happy, no matter what.”
He sighed turning his head towards her with a half smile. “I guess we’ll just take some time to figure things out huh?”
Hermione nodded. “It’s the only way. You are one of my best friends. And I love you. But I just don’t think I love you in the way I thought I did. Does that make sense?”
Ron shrugged, giving a half-hearted chuckle. “Can’t say it does, but I’m trying to understand it.” He pulled his hand out of his pocket and pulled Hermione in for a side hug.
He pulled away first, looking at the sky. “We’re still friends though, right?”
“Always Ron, that won’t ever change.” Hermione said warmly. She probably would have said something sappier if his stomach hadn’t started gurgling. “And that’s our cue for breakfast. Some things never change do they?”
Ron couldn’t help but flush and grin at her comment, but it was sincere giving Hermione hope that no matter how messy their relationship was at that moment, somehow, everything would turn out just fine.
