Chapter 7: Attacked and Rescued, Part Two
The announcement was made for all fifth year prefects to escort students to their dormitories--standard procedure whenever a safety issue was presented to the students. Sixth and seventh year prefects were ordered to meet in the entry hall and were organized into pairs of two. Their job was to ensure that any students who missed the anouncement were safely escorted to the dormitories and to also assist the faculty in confirming whether or not the creature was in the castle or not. A task that no one would likely be able to say with complete certainty but they could do their best.
Unfortunately, Lucius Malfoy was missing from this search and unable to comply as a result because he was dealing with the creature himself, in the library.
While everyone was organizing, Lucius was walking along the corridors with Evan Rossier when a loud crash shook the entiriety of the building, and it came from the direction of the library, closely followed by the loud scream of a girl. it was the scream of the girl that ultimately impacted his decision to investigate. Immediately Lucius asked the other boy to notify a faculty member while he went to investigate. Something like disbelief overcame him as he took in the scene before him.
First, there was a Griffin standing in the middle of the library having crashed through the windows and crushing everything in its path, in this case furniture. It seemed it must have been flying very fast when it crashed.
Second, there were two students in the middle of this. One was a Gryffindor girl pressed against the far wall, her face and most of her body concealed by the sheer size of the beast and to Lucius's right and directly behind the creature was the Ravenclaw Quidditch Captain, Revon.
The entire scene before him was chaotic with the Griffin hissing and digging its claws into the floor, papers torn from books were flying through the air, and to agrivate the creature further, several enchanted books were knocked free from the place in the forbidden section. A terrible banshee-like scream filled the air as well as powerul winds.
He could certainly subdue the creature but it might cause it to thrash a bit, and he did not wish to have the death of a student attached to his name. Hence he decided to carefully move towards the stone wall to the right and inched along it, his goal was to move close enough to the girl to create a shield charm and then attack.
He felt inexplicably annoyed by the entire scene.
'Don't do anything,' The cornered girl insisted with an unexpected high amount of confidence. 'Griffins only attack if they feel threatened; it's very afraid. If we simply remain calm it will probably leave.'
Lucius couldn't argue with her suggestion and perhaps because she seemed so confident he decided to issue an order to Revon, 'Could you lower your wand?' He had to raise his voice, and this made the beast hiss at him but otherwise it remained still. Instead of listening to him the other boy reacted, 'Don't worry, I'll protect you.'
The girl mumbled more to herself than to him, and he couldn't hear most of it, but it sounded as if she were interested in whether or not the creature was male or female, not that he cared. He ignored this and asked her to retreat to the forbidden section since it had several protective charms on it. Once she was safe he could subdue the beast without any worries for anyone's safety.
She surprised him when she shook her head and again insisted, 'Don't hurt it.'
Clearly I am not in luck today. A fool in front of me and a fool beside me.
Before he could do anything Revon decided he would seize the moment and really illustrate how thoroughly confused the sorting hat had been in placing him in Ravenclaw: he prepared a confundus charm, and a powerful one at that, but it seemed he must have forgotten that Griffins have strong defenses to such spells. It bounced off and hit him hard, sending him backwards and into the wall. He fell on the floor, stunned, and did not move.
Lucius lifted his wand, free to kill it, but missed when the girl grabbed onto his arm and caused him to shoot down the chandelier instead. It caused the creature to flap its powerful wings, shooting papers at such a speed that if he hadn't constructed a shield he might have been shredded to bits by paper.
Angry now, he flung the girl away, sending her across the room and into a table. At the moment he was about to eliminate the creature McGonagal burst into the room and yelled a spell, stunning the creature, and then another to silence the screaming book and wind.
'At least no one was harmed, ' She glanced at Revon ,'What happened to Mr. Revon?'
'He was hit with his own confounding charm.' He replied, mild amusement evident in his tone.
She shook her head slowly, 'And Ms. Granger, you're unharmed?'
The other girl slowly turned around and made considerable effort to avoid looking at him, something that he found both curious and irritating. Either she was a coward or uncommonly arrogant. But it didn't matter, did it?
'....Ms. Granger proved to be a fountain of information.' he dryly explained, 'and rather quick to protect the creature. Perhaps she should be commended?'
Mcgonagal frowned, 'Ms. Granger you may leave Mr. Malfoy I would like to know if there is anything else regarding this incident that you can tell me?'
He merely shrugged, 'I can't say that I have anything to add.' He actually had a few words he would like to add but knew when he had nothing to gain by speaking his mind, and confronting the Griffindor head would only result in a headache and perhaps insult his dignity.
'Yes well I will give my compliments to your head of house for your exceptionall work this evening and award you twenty points for helping keep these students safe.'
He moved towards the exist and merely nodded in her direction, 'Slytherin thanks you.'
Another professor, Kettleburn, could be heard exclaiming in the distance. Lucius gritted his teeth and thought of what he could do to have the man sacked, but knew there was very little. In that moment he decided that in the future he would find a way to be actively involved in ensuring that any education his children received would be from qualified, responsible wizards.
