It was nearing the end of lunch and Audrey was happy that Percy was enjoying the food she had made him. Being at home may be awkward but at least work she had a friend and people had faith in her. But that is when Howard Hitchens’s walked in, he was head of Department of Magical Education, his department was in charge of sending out Hogwarts letter. It was odd that he would walk in, and she could tell by Percy’s look that he was also surprised.
“I am sorry Mr. Crouch is not back yet Mr. Hitchens.” Percy said about to stand up.
“No no, I am here to see Ms. Llewellyn.” Howard said waving his hand at Percy.
“For me sir?” Audrey asked shocked.
“Yes.” Mr. Hitchens said. “We have a bit of a situation with your sister.”
This confused Audrey, as far as she knew she was an only child. She zoned out a little trying for figure it all out. But she gathered that her mother was married and had a second daughter who was 11 years old, who was a muggle-born. They had been living in America, and was supposed to go to the Ilvermorny, but had told Professor Lynch they were moving to England for family. So now Audrey’s surprise sister was going to Hogwarts and Mr. Hitchens wanted Audrey to be the one to fully explain and help her sister get prepared in four days.
Audrey only nodded but was still rather dazed; her mother had been living with her for almost two months and had not once said anything about siblings. Lucille had said she wanted them to be closer and really be mother and daughter, several times actually, but this should have been one of the first things told to Audrey. She found herself trying not to cry, and heard Mr. Hitchens also tell her he had spoken to Mr. Bagman and she was allowed to leave early today. Then Mr. Hitchens left and she was alone with Percy.
“Audrey?” Percy asked. “Did you not know you had a sister?” Audrey put her head down and sighed.
“No.” Audrey told him. “I’ve only just started seeing my mother again at the beginning of the summer. Before then it had been fourteen years. She even has been living with me for these two months and has not said anything to me.”
“Wow.” Percy said.
“Well I better get home to my ever growing family.” Audrey said standing up.
“Will you be alright?” Percy asked. Audrey just shrugged.
“I’ll see you on Monday probably then.” Audrey said. “You can keep the left overs.”
Audrey left Percy and headed to her desk and gathered her things and headed home. It was ironically at the very right moment to get the train home and was home by 2 in the afternoon. She was walking down the road to where she lived and she Lucille outside talking to man with brown hair who was taller than her. Audrey looked inside her garden, there were not one but two children playing with Sasha the poodle.
The older child was female, around eleven years old with dark brown near black hair and blue eyes. Then there was boy with dirty blonde and honey eyes who looked about seven years old. No one had even noticed her yet, and Audrey was getting mad, they were a happy nice normal family. And yet no one had even bother tell her anything even though they were here family.
“Inviting people to my house when I am not home?” Audrey asked, putting too much emphasis on the word my. “And when were you going to tell me I had siblings?”
“Audrey!” Lucille said. “You home early! Wait, how did you know about?”
“I was told at work out of the blue.” Audrey said, and then she turned to her sister not bare to look at Lucille right now. “So I hear you are going to Hogwarts in a few days.” This caused them all to look at her; apparently they were aware of the secrecy.
“Yes.” The new sister said to her standing up. “I’m Clementine O’Malley! Tobias look its out sister Cassie.” Tobias was a little shy and ran and their mother.
“I go by Audrey actually.” Audrey told them.
“Hello Audrey.” The man said just then. “I’m Charles O’Malley. I guess I am kind of your step-father.”
“Hello.” Audrey said trying to be polite.
“How do you know about Hogwarts?” Lucille asked.
“That is where I went to school.” Audrey said looking back at Clementine. “Now why don’t we go inside so I can explain more.” They all followed Audrey inside her cottage and she closed the door.
“So it’s all real?” Clementine asked excitedly. “I’m a witch with powers?”
“It can’t be real.” Charles said.
“Of course it is.” Audrey said pulling out her wand and pointing it her very old stove. And suddenly a fire came from nowhere and she put the kettle on the stove.” Clementine squealed. This also caused Tobias to be less scared and get closer.
“Wow, that was cool.” Tobias said. “Clementine can do that too?”
“She can once she goes to school.” Audrey said.
“Hogwarts was that boarding school you were talking about.” Lucille asked.
“Yes.” Audrey said pulling down some mugs and the sugar cubes and putting them on the table.
“The children don’t drink tea.” Charles said.
“This is England, everyone drinks tea.” Audrey said but then looked at her siblings. “I know! Clementine how about some Pumpkin Juice?”
“What?” Clementine asked.
“It’s one of our world’s drinks.” Audrey said going to her cupboard and pulled some out and pulled into a glass for Clementine and then used a spell to chill it. “Here you are.” Clementine was even more excited her first wizarding experience.
“I want some too!!!” Tobias said.
Audrey was not sure if it was the best idea, since he was a muggle, but gave him some too. Then the kettle went off so poured tea for the grown-ups, then grabbed spoons and the creamer and sat down. The prepped their tea before continuing the talk.
“So how did you hear about Clementine at your office job in Godric’s Hollow.” Lucille asked.
“Actually I work in London.” Audrey said. “For the Ministry of Magic in the Department of Magical Games and Sports.”
“But London is eight hours away by train.” Lucille asked.
“We do not need to use muggle transportation.” Audrey said, but then had to explain what a muggle was. Then explained Apperating and Floo Powder to them. “Do you know what it’s like to be an intern having lunch with a friend and co-worker and be told you’re supposed to be the one to explain and prep a sister you did not even know you had for Hogwarts?”
“Oh.” Lucille said. “I am sorry. I just never knew how to ....”
“How to tell me that once you left me, you went and had a new family.” Audrey said but felt bad the moment it came out. “I’m sorry" she said before they could say anything. "I do not want to fight.”
“So Clementine school starts in a week.” Audrey said. “We go shopping soon. Is tomorrow alright? It kind of an all-day thing. And I need to Diagon Alley anyway to get a dress robe.”
“Diagon Alley?” Charles and Lucille asked at the same time.
“Best place in all of England to get Wizarding supplies.” Audrey said. “It’s in London.”
Audrey was just going to see if she could go alone with Clementine, did not want to bring too many muggles to Diagon Ally. Especially with Knockturn Alley right there and after what happened at the Quidditch World Cup. She would even pay for everything, she did have the money for it. But both Lucille and Charles were not willing to let that happen. So in the end they decided that Lucille would go with them.
After some more talking it was nearing 4 in the afternoon, and Charles said they better head back to the hotel for supper. The closest muggle hotel was two hours away, and that was the one they were staying out. And if they stayed any longer or even for dinner it would go past Tobias’s bedtime. That’s when Audrey put her foot in her mouth again, and basically showed her Hufflepuff side.
“So did you move here for a job?” Audrey asked.
“No, dear we came for you.” Lucille said.
“I can work from where ever.” Charles said. “I mostly work from home and the phone. And my company has an office in London.”
“Well, Lucille is already living here.” Audrey said. “You could all stay here still you find your own place. And it would give me time to help Clementine more.”
This made Lucille smile, and they agreed, so Charles took Tobias with him to get their stuff from the hotel. Leaving Clementine with Lucile and Audrey, the boys were going to have McDonalds for dinner. At first Lucille said the girls should go out to dinner together, but then wanted to invite Ben. She really seemed to want to set Audrey and Ben up.
“Mother no!” Audrey said. “I will not date a muggle. I am sorry but no. It is far too complicated and those relationships never work.”
“Those relationships?” Lucille asked. “Are you saying Muggles and Witches never get together?”
“Oh it happens, we are called half-bloods.” Audrey said.
“We?” Lucille asked.
“Yes we.” Audrey said. “Father was a wizard and so was his whole family.”
“No wonder he was so crazy.” Lucille said.
“Clementine you see the book shelf over there?” Audrey said pointing. “I have a book called ‘Hogwarts A History’ you might find it interesting.” With that Clementine ran over and found the book and sat down on the couch reading it. “Actually mother, dad was even crazy by wizard standards.”
“What happened to your father?” Lucille asked. “You grandmother’s letter was not specific. She just said he died four years ago.”
“…” Audrey looked down at her tea. “He was eaten by a Chimera while we were on holiday in Greece.”
She never talked about how she had been there to see that, she tried not to think about it. And that’s when Audrey got a shock, her mother actually hugged her. It was only a quick one, not very motherly or affectionate, but still a hug. Lucille must have noticed the tears forming in Audrey’s eyes, was probably the only reason she hugged her eldest daughter.
“I’ll just have Twinkles make us supper.” Audrey said. Twinkles was her house elf, who she did not really use but the elf did clean and stay hidden.
“Twinkles?” Lucille said.
“My family’s house elf.” Audrey said, then had to explain it. “Grandmothers actually, her family had like seven elves. Twinkles! It’s okay show yourself.”
With a pop a house elf appeared in a pillow case dress and high pitched voice, called Audrey Mistress and everything. Clementine even put down her book to see this, and Audrey told Twinkles to make the three of them supper. Lucille found it strange she had lived there for two months and never noticed this. Twinkles made them bacon macaroni and cheese and they talked more about school.
At around eight thirty that night Charles and Tobias came back with their rental car and all the luggage. Tobias was all excited about not having to take a bath that night since it was soo late, and Audrey put her little brother in her father’s old room to sleep in. After that, Clementine was taking her bath and the grownups were talking, and the fire place suddenly erupted in flames and it scared her parents. And then there was Percy’s head.
“I’m sorry, Audrey.” Percy said. “I wanted to check on you after what happened.”
“Hello Percy.” Audrey said. “Oh, this is my mother, Lucille, and her husband, Charles.”
“Hello.” Percy said to them.
“I am fine Percy.” Audrey said, trying to squash her former crush from resurfacing.
“I’m glad.” Percy said. “I also wanted to tell you I got a hold of Penny and she said it is fine that I go with you to Quidditch Award’s dinner. She just wants me to get Belvina Abernathy’s autograph.”
“That’s good.” Audrey said. “I did not want you to get in trouble with you girlfriend.”
“Sorry for interrupting your evening.” Percy said. “See you on Monday.” Then Percy’s head was gone.
“Mmm-hmm.” Lucille said, she could read Audrey’s face. “He’s the real reason you do not want to be set up with Ben isn’t he?” Audrey blushed.
“But he has a girlfriend.” Charles said.
“I do not want to discuss this.” Audrey said.
And then Clementine came out in her Disney princess pyjamas. And even though she just met them, Audrey and Clementine had a sleepover basically, because Clementine had so many questions about Hogwarts. The next morning Twinkles had made ‘Toad in the Hole’ for them for breakfast. Audrey had to explain it was just like eggy pancake with sausages in it.
After breakfast the girls got dress and Audrey explained and showed and summoned the Knight Bus. And the girls were at Diagon Alley in twenty minutes, then went into the Leaky Cauldron to get to the shops. Clementine was super excited and gripping her mother’s arm. First there was Gringotts, then books and wands and all the other shops. Audrey purposely left Madam Malkins shop for last, since he had to get a dress for the awards dinner.
Clementine was with Madam Malkin getting fitted with her robes and uniform, so Lucille decided to help Audrey get a dress. This bothered Audrey and was mildly embarrassed because Lucille kept bring up Percy. Lucille decided Audrey’s best colour was red and picked out a nice form fitting dress that should get Percy’s attention. Audrey was not sure she wanted to stand out to Percy, he was in a relationship. But at the same she really did like Percy, and well maybe some other wizard would notice and sweep her off her feet.
So Audrey got the dress Lucille picked out for her, then Clementine was done too. Before they left though, Clementine brought up how they could have pets, and would not drop this. Lucille was not so sure about this, the idea of a pet at school was strange to her. But apparently Clementine had always wanted a cat, and after some talking Lucille finally gave in. Clementine got an Exotic Shorthair cat which she named Tiger. Then they headed home in time dinner.
