Another short one. If I'm going to upload every weekend I guess they'll have to be shorter than the first few chapters - hope ya'll don't mind
Chapter 8
The Extra PolyJuice
Hermione waited in her common room, worrying her lip raw and waiting for her friends to come back from dinner. She really wanted to run what happened at the library past Harry. If she had the map, she wouldn't be flipping the entire interaction upside down and around in her head, trying to figure out who was posing as three Ravenclaws after lunch.
She noticed after she had scribbled down the page and information, stuffed it in her bag and placed the books onto the return rack, that all three of them paused their heated discussion to watch her leave. It was eerie. And it only served to confuse her more. What's more is Draco had sent a house elf with a note to her side, making her startle and spill tea all over her favorite jumper. He told her Diagon Alley didn't carry the opposing love potion they had been using but he was searching for the ingredients to brew it himself.
He also asked her to stay away and only communicate via owl until he got his hands on another bottle. She tossed the letter into the fire and dug her palms into her eyes, rubbing the frustration out of them. Like she could just turn tail and run any time he appeared in the corridor. She was tempted to send him a response telling him to take sick days to avoid her instead.
"Hey! What are you doing here alone?" Ginny speaks from the portrait hole, Ron and Harry carrying on behind her in some heated debate. They both pause when they see her sat on the rug by the fire. She watched the note from Draco burn to be certain there was nothing left of it.
"I had an interesting encounter I felt I should share. Was there anything strange you noticed recently?" She watched Harry push his glasses up on his face and looked puzzled for a moment.
"Stranger than you spending hours at a time in the library with Malfoy?" Ron snips but instantly looks apologetic. He clearly had been complaining with Harry about it but keeping his thoughts to himself. She glanced over at him and redirected her focus to Ginny.
"Nothing more than usual," Ginny twirled her hair over one shoulder and sat on the plush couch behind her. Hermione rose and sat next to her.
"I met Anthony Goldstein in the library today after lunch. Only it wasn't Anthony."
"How do you mean?" Harry sat on the arm of the other couch and Ron leaned against the backing, clasping his hands together to listen intently.
"You remember Anthony from Dumbledore's Army. Only, this Anthony didn't call me by my name. He kept calling me 'Granger girl'." Hermione brushed her skirt down, feeling like it was a slight at her womanhood to call her a 'girl'. It felt gross.
"Ew," Ginny scrunched her nose up and Hermione nodded.
"You think it was someone using polyjuice?" Ron asked.
"Hiding from someone?" Harry added.
"It must have been. Along with the two others, Corners and Boot. If they were really Michael and Terry they would have noticed that Anthony wasn't behaving as himself. Wouldn't you lot notice if I was suddenly speaking differently? If something seemed off?"
Ginny quickly snapped her head into her direction and Hermione avoided meeting her gaze. She was concerned that her friend felt a double meaning in her question. The boys thought for a moment before Harry's eyes became resolved, ignoring the rhetorical question.
"Do you know what they were doing? Do you think someone's brewing polyjuice potion to sneak around? Maybe to research in the library?" Harry asked.
Hermione lets out a loud sigh. "I don't know but I thought I could take a peek at the completed class potions in Slughorn's classroom. We've got so many students practicing and they wouldn't be able to sell them, in case there was a mistake. It's probably a large amount of finished potions that just sit there."
Harry nods and Ron looks frustrated. "And Slughorn would just leave them free to be taken?"
Hermione shrugs, "They're most likely under locks but that doesn't mean you can't get to them. I'm not sure what they were up to but nobody hides themselves under another's appearance unless they can't be seen. Harry, can I use your cloak?"
Harry nods again, "I'll come with you-" but Hermione shakes her head.
"I can handle it. You two need to get going on your D.A.D.A paper. Snape isn't going to take it easy on you and you need passing grades to start the Auror programs." She stands and holds her hands to the fire, feeling a chill seeping in thinking of walking the halls alone. "I'll check them over when I get back. I doubt 'Anthony' is going to run into me again." She flashed a smile and finally met Ginny's scrutinizing gaze.
Harry and Ron look sheepish for a moment but both head toward their staircase and Ron comes down first, his bag in his hands. He stops at Hermione to give her cheek a kiss, "I appreciate you, 'Mione."
She smiles at him but it quickly leaves her face. "I- erm. I need to speak with you tonight. If you have the time." She took his free hand and squeezed it lovingly.
"Anything for you, love." Ron squeezes back before taking himself to the writing desk across the room. Harry appears a moment later with the invisibility cloak.
He hands it to Hermione, "Just put it back in my chest when you return. I'm going to work this out and go right to bed." Hermione noticed him glancing at Ginny.
She speaks up, "I'll come with you. I need to talk- Girl talk, you know?" Harry looks a little crestfallen that she isn't sticking around but moves to sit opposite Ron.
Hermione feels nervous as she gathers the cloak in her hands. "You can wait for me to get back, Gin. I've no issues going alone. I'll be quick, I promise." The other girl stares through her nerves and Hermione resolves to be forced to catch Ginny up on all that has happened since the last time she came back with the invisibility cloak.
The two exit and move through the halls quietly at first. The loud ringing in Hermione's ears was getting annoying; stemming from her frustration at being cornered and essentially forced to explain her embarrassment and admit there was something she couldn't figure out. It was making her head feel like it would explode. They rounded a corner and found the corridor empty and both sheltered under the cloak, finally in whisper range.
"Are you going to talk to me or am I supposed to assume everything's peachy?" Ginny whispers.
Hermione sighs. "I'm fine, Gin. There's a lot of strange things going on and on top of this weird and suspicious interaction, I'm stressed to death."
"Porky pies, 'Mione. Have you forgotten I know you?" Hermione feels guilty for a moment but Ginny presses on. "I may have been busy with Harry but don't think I've not noticed you sneaking about. And I don't mean just to the library. The extra cauldron under your bed that was going nonstop has suddenly stopped. What. Are. You. Doing?" She pokes her friends shoulder with each word for emphasis as they stop in front of the potions classroom. The door creaks open quietly as they slip in carefully. The storeroom is at the back sat next to the ingredients room. They're lucky it's a simple charm to unlock it and Hermione lights her wand as she looks about the shelves, trying to appear indifferent to her friend.
"I'm trying to help -you know- figure out this curse he had placed on him over the winter hols." The lowest shelf didn't have any polyjuice so she moved up a row.
"Malfoy. I'm not surprised someone would curse his smarmy arse."
"I still think it was his friends which is sort of sad, really." Hermione turns, the light shining a shadow over Ginny, still hiding under the cloak with her head poking out from under, watching Hermione move about the little room. She's annoyed that she can't see her friend's face clearly to better judge how much information she could share but she keeps searching.
"Why? What is he cursed with?"
"We aren't sure-"
"But it involves you for some reason? Is that why he snogged you all that time ago? Love bite 'n all, yeah?" She imagines Ginny pretending to bite her own neck with her hand based on the silly noise she makes, like a chomping bite and it makes Hermione roll her eyes. They read the same bad romance novel with the vampire lover, she knew what she was thinking.
"Ginny. We think-" Hermione chewed her lip, turning to face away, the blush coming to her cheeks. "He's been cursed to... desire me. Some cruel prank-"
Ginny laughs loudly and Hermione hits her with a silencing spell, putting her hands on her hips. "It's not funny. It's incredibly frustrating. He's like a ruddy dragon in heat. -I heard the irony as I said it, stop smirking at me! Ugh!" Hermione cleared the 3rd shelf with no polyjuice in sight. They had to be somewhere.
She spun and yanked the cloak back over Ginny's head when the door creaked open and closed in a split second. The disillusion charm vanished and the topic of the hour stood before her. "Bullocks." She breathed, meeting his eye and his lazy smirk.
"Of course you're in here." He scowled but it was playful. She scooted to the far side of the closet, Ginny behind her still hidden.
"Following me still?" Hermione sneered at him, very aware that he should have no more potion to keep him under control so she kept her defenses up.
"Not yet," he moved forward, closer to her but paused and squinted at the shelves at his eye level. He snatched her wrist and pulled her lit wand to look at the potions. When he let go and began to grab and pocket them one by one, he continued, "need some dreamless sleep if I'm going without for a while. It should stop the-"
"Nocturnal emissions?" She offered in her know-it-all tone he hated. He rolled his head to her and glared.
"Only you could make 'coming in my pants when I'm asleep' sound more dirty than the actual act." He moved to look at the other side of the room, lighting his own wand.
"Dra- Malfoy?" She corrected herself and saw his smirk, with odd casted shadows all over his face.
"I told you, you only need to call me Malfoy when I'm touching you."
"Why- Why aren't you?"
"Ravishing you?" He moved to face her and she tilted her head back to meet his eyes. "I could if you want me to." He had put one hand on her waist and leaned forward. He pulled his lower lip in to bite it when he looked at her but pulled back. He threw a shoulder up in a shrug. "I take the Never Love at night to help with- you know. So I'm only now about an hour without it."
He tapped the underside of her chin with his knuckle and grinned. "Take a breath, Granger. You're safe for now."
Ginny's hand smacking at her back from under the cloak made her incredibly aware they weren't by themselves and she desperately wanted to prove to her friend she wasn't acting any different. She's just the same old Hermione driven to solve a puzzle.
"Has anything strange been happening? Anything you noticed that wasn't the norm?"
He picked up a glittery potion and held it to the light. His eyebrows pricked upward as he looked at it and he pocketed it too. "Hmm," he tilted his head side to side, his neck cracked on one and he exhaled loudly like it felt nice.
"Aside from Blaise disappearing for a week, Theo trying to climb into my bed and Pansy being furious she can't have sex with me...nothing really." Hermione scoffed and could hear his smile as he turned to the door to leave. "I only pay attention to people that matter."
She followed and tugged at his sleeve. "Does anyone have a need to use polyjuice to hide themselves?" He cracked the door and leaned one long arm on the frame staring down at her.
"I couldn't tell you. I'm too focused on getting another Never Love, I can't be arse with your Golden Trio mysteries." Despite his snarky words, he leaned down and placed a kiss on her lips. It was almost sweet but Hermione froze, her eyes moving to the back of the room. "Good night, Granger." He smiled and then tilted his head to follow her gaze. "And good night- I'm going to assume, Weaslette? Perhaps Longbottom? Judging by the fact you haven't lunged at my throat yet."
She stared at him and he flicked his eyebrows up for a moment before casting his disillusion charm and heading back out. Hermione clicked the door closed and stared at the floor until Ginny was right in front of her, face as red as her hair. Hermione had silenced her and she hadn't removed it yet. She did and covered the girl's mouth with her hand.
"Before you yell at me, think where we are. Now, did that answer anything for you?"
Ginny was bouncing on the balls of her feet. "You're snogging Draco Malfoy!" She whispered and broke into a fit of giggles. Hermione is surprised. She expected Ginny to be angry since she was dating her brother, a fact she seemed to remember suddenly as her face twisted up into fury.
"What about-"
"Ron. I know. The whole situation is rubbish. Malfoy literally can't help himself when we don't have the negating potion and I feel so awful, I'm breaking up with Ron tonight."
"Really? For the ferret? That's ridiculous!"
"I'm not leaving Ron for Draco," Hermione rolled her eyes. "But it's awful to snog both on a regular basis. And Draco's ridiculously possessive even with the Never Love and we are all out of it now. It only lasts 24 hours at a time." She groans and rubs her eyes. "Ron can't find out about this." She took Ginny's hands and squeezed tightly.
"This is insane." She shook her head and scratched at her scalp, her face confused. "Who in the world would slip Malfoy a love potion for you? No offense, it's just bizarre."
"We think that the inverse, Ever Love potion, was used and instead of using a sample from the target, it's activated by a kiss. So, when we were hiding in the Restricted Section..."
Ginny giggled. "Boy, I bet he wasn't expecting to fall in love when he felt you up." Hermione saw tears gathering in Ginny's eyes as she quietly laughed.
"He's an absolute nightmare about it. He was very charming at first. Affectionate with me even but he's still Malfoy and I'm still quite sick of his games. He grabbed me and dragged me into a corner earlier today. I'm pretty sure he did it to irritate me and it worked." She huffed a breath and finally turned back to the shelves.
She finds half a dozen polyjuice potions, 2 of which look flawless where the others have slightly off colouring. "So, these are the only two that look correct. The rest probably don't work right. There's more than six people taking advanced potions this year."
Ginny shrugged and lifted the invisibility cloak for her to join her underneath. "Definitely. Someone must have swiped the other ones. Looks like your suspicions were right, as always."
Hermione agreed solemnly, another curious event that was making her head hurt as she tried to understand it. They walked silently for a while, heading back to their common room.
"Gin? What should I tell Ron? I really fancy him but I'm not sure what to do with this entire mess." She finally asked as she ran a hand over her face, pressing her palms into her eyes with the stress of the entire thing.
"I'm sure he would prefer you avoiding Malfoy to calling it quits but I don't think he would be very chipper to know what's going on there."
She sighs and looks at her boyfriend's sister and her best friend. "I can't tell him. You know how ridiculous the boys get when it comes to defending me." She rolls her eyes, stumbling a little when she tripped over Ginny's feet.
"Whatever you decide to tell him, let me know. I can back you up no matter what it is. I love Ron but he's a big oaf when he is angry." She flashes Hermione her brilliant smile before squealing at her again. "You're snogging Malfoy! Oh my Godric! Is he good at it?" She bit her lip and Hermione practically felt the excitement vibrating off her. The red burns her cheeks and she can't stop the grin on her face.
"Incredible, actually. Sometimes I get affected by whatever it is and feel so..." She whispered now, afraid of speaking the words to life. "hot and bothered when he's all over me. Merlin, it's no wonder he doesn't understand the word 'no'. I can barely think clearly." At Ginny's raised eyebrows she stammered out, "It- It must be the curse or-or potion. I definitely don't think he's worth all this trouble otherwise."
Ginny speaks the password and the portrait opens, they both giggle together and Ginny gathers the cloak under her arm. "I'll put this back. I'm going to say goodnight to Harry, anyways." Hermione smirks at her and sticks her tongue between her teeth to stifle a laugh.
"Sure. Don't forget the silencing charm, Gin. G'nite!" Hermione glances across the room to see Ron with his face down on the writing desk, his paper sprawled under him. She took a heavy breath and wiped the back of her sleeve across her mouth, the phantom kiss from Draco lingering but helping push her forward.
She placed a hand on Ron's shoulder and shook him lightly. "Hey, you fell asleep, silly." He mumbled and rubbed a hand over his face, his hair a complete mess and his eyes lidded as he smiled his crooked smile at her.
"Mmm, I nearly finished it. Let me know where to improve it at breakfast?" His voice was gruff and the rumble made her feel warm and her guilt bubbled up. What is one more day? She could talk to him tomorrow.
"Of course. Goodnight, Ron." She leaned forward to kiss his cheek but he turned into her and wrapped his arms around her and buried his nose into her neck, placing a soft kiss on her throat.
"Want to come to bed with me?" He placed another kiss on her neck and nudged her jaw with his nose. He was asking to cuddle with an offer to fool around and if she was honest, the idea of being snuggled up with him would help her sleep. However, she could still smell Draco's cologne on her robes and knew it would make her feel bad the moment she wakes. She pressed a kiss to his forehead and shook her head.
"I'm going to check your essay's and go to bed. Sleep well, love." She squeezed his waist and smiled sweetly.
"Alright. Goodnight, 'Mione." A quick kiss on her lips and he headed up to bed. She took his seat and lost herself in first his, and then Harry's homework. She was glad with the distraction. It even let her think about something else when she went to bed instead of tossing and worrying about Draco not having a way to keep himself together.
She makes a mental note to send him a patronus to ask for the ingredient list so she could brew some herself. And to ask him to skip class if he was feeling any type of way that felt unmanageable. They didn't know how much the curse had taken effect on his body with the Never Love being constantly used and the last thought before falling asleep was that it might be magnified after all this time being pushed under the surface.
