The Grindelwald Legacy
Chapter 80
“Tea, how nice. Don’t look so worried Miss Grindelwald, you are not on trial here.” Albus told the still frowning witch.
Lucy set the tray on the small table in front of the two wizards. She refused to look at Severus, she already felt apprehensive, and his confusion, disappointment, and anger were only adding to her anxiety. “It wasn’t my fault.” she blurted. “Not all of it anyway.”
Albus waited for the scowling witch to throw herself into the armchair furthest from Severus, Fawkes squawking again and flapping his wings since she’d chosen the seat he happened to be perched on. “The floor belongs to you Miss Grindelwald.”
Lucy chewed at a fingernail, wondering where to begin. “I can feel what he feels. I tried to stop it but I can’t.”
“Is that it?” Albus asked curiously when she stayed silent for the next few minutes.
“Yes. No. I didn’t mean to feel anything, but when old Bony did Crucio on him, I had to didn’t I? I had to stop him hurting, and I needed to feel what was happening to make it stop.”
“I take it you are referring to feeling what Severus felt while under the curse, and not what Voldemort was emoting when he cast the spell?”
“Yeah. But I didn’t know it would start some binding thing, I’ve never even heard of binding before this weekend. Anyway, to be honest I don’t think it would have made any difference at the time. Have you seen what that curse does? There’s a disease, Dystonia, when generalised, it causes the most horrific muscle spasms. Acute, generalised Dystonia starts in childhood and there’s no cure, the older they get, the worse the spasms get. A boy at Montford had it, Jason Somers, he was sixteen years old, but looked more like forty . He couldn’t control it, no one could, his bones would often fracture or break with the strength of the spasms. He spent more time in hospital than out of it, but we all saw what it did to him, we heard his screams. It terrified us, he used to cry so much, begging anyone who’d listen to put him to sleep. Permanently. That’s what Crucio’s like. Maybe I could have stopped what Jason had, at least helped him a bit, eased the muscle contractions, relieved his pain. But I didn’t. I didn’t know I had magic then, not like I do now. But I could try and stop what was happening to Severus, and if-if, even knowing about getting myself bonded to him, if connecting with him was the only way to stop it, then I would have still done it. Look I’m sorry I messed up, I’ve tried to do what gran said in that letter, to will his emotions from my mind, but it won’t work. The more I try the harder it gets. Besides, I know he can feel mine as well. I’m sure of it.”
The two wizard sat dumfounded at her story, Severus feeling more guilt than he’d experienced in his lifetime. But it did not bring them any closer to a solution.
“Fawkes, I think it is time to bring Hetty into the equation. Would you mind dear friend.”
Fawkes trilled, then disappeared in a flash of blue flame, scaring Lucy so much she jumped from the chair and fled to the kitchen, Severus right behind her.
“Go away, I already know how angry you are.”
Undeterred, Severus did not stop until he was standing directly behind her at the kitchen sink. “Yes I am angry, but not at you personally. It is the situation that infuriates me, the fact we were not informed of the consequences beforehand. What you said in there, it was the truth?”
“About Jason? I’m hardly likely to make something like that up.”
“No not about Jason. You said that, even had you known the connection would have the result of binding you to me, you still would have done it?”
“I said so didn’t I?” She muttered.
“I… had to be sure.”
“Why, so you can tell me what an idiot I am? Tell me I’ve got my head in the clouds? That I don’t know what I’m talking about?”
“No. You do not need me to tell you what you already know. But it forces me to admit I would most likely have done the same in your situation. That had I known in advance about the binding, I doubt it would have made a difference when I connected with you, when I encouraged you to use your will against Greyback. At the time I saw no other option but to feed my thoughts and emotions to you, forewarning of the consequences would not have deterred me.”
She turned, shocked at his confession. “You… you would have still done that?”
“I said so didn’t I?”
Lucy narrowed her eyes at him. He’d thrown her own words back at her, just as she did to him the day he left her alone. “Greyback?” She asked, puzzled.
“The one who repulsed you even more than the Dark Lord.”
“Oh him. He was… I don’t know. It was like he wasn’t human, even less than Bony.”
“Greyback is not human, he is a werewolf.”
“A what?” She screeched. “A fucking werewolf?”
“Lucy Grindelwald. Do not let me hear you using language like that again.”
“Gran.” Lucy shouted, giving Severus a somewhat confused look before dashing into the living room. “Gran you came back. Oh gran, so much has happened and now we’re in a right pickle and we don’t know what to do.”
“So Albus tells me.”
Severus watched as Winky and Maxi plodded into the kitchen, then followed Lucy. “Madam Grindelwald, so nice of you to return, if rather too late. I assume you come bearing a solution to our dilemma?” He greeted dryly.
“Sit down young man and don’t cheek your elders.” Hetty scolded.
Lucy, as distraught as she was, clapped a hand over her mouth to stifle her giggles at the expression on Severus’ face after Hetty‘s ticking off. Add to that the red patches on his cheeks and he had the look of a naughty schoolboy just caught in the act of committing a crime.
“You too my girl, you’re not out of the woods yet.” “Winky, go to my room and bring me the black bound folder with the gold ‘G
’ on the cover. You know the one.”
The little elf came and went in the blink of an eye, returning less than a minute later with a thick wallet and offering it to her mistress.
Lucy sat down, but her eyes still watered and she couldn’t resist taking a peek at Severus. He sat down immediately Hetty told him to, but the red stains still graced his cheeks and he looked fit to explode. He glowered fiercely at Lucy, then turned his attention to the folder Hetty was holding.
“I have some questions first. Neither of you will like them, but I want the truth.” Said Hetty, settling on the sofa beside a strangely quiet Albus and opening the wallet to reveal a thick sheaf of parchments. “Now, Have you managed the twenty four hour period without any hiccups?”
“No.” Severus replied, offering no explanation.
“And? What happened to interrupt it?”
When neither Severus or Lucy answered, Albus explained as succinctly as he could, about the summons, and Lucy’s attempts at preventing him from leaving. He also related, as tactfully as he could, what took place during the visit.
“And both of you connected at some time during that period?” Hetty seemed oddly unsurprised at the situation.
“Yes.” Severus answered curtly again.
“And then what? You came back here, began again? What?”
When Severus and Lucy still did not answer she sighed. “Oh for heavens sake. Severus.”
The moment he looked at the old witch she shouted “Legillimens.” taking him by surprise. He was about to drop his occlumency walls, but decided it was best she know everything, and this would be easier than having to verbally articulate the events.
Once she had seen everything there was to see, Hetty turned to Lucy. “You too, don’t try and block me, I cannot help you if I do not have the full story.”
Lucy coloured gloriously as Hetty filtered through her memories one at a time, bringing every detail to the fore, examining, and moving on to the next.
“Severus, once more if you would.”
The Potion Master matched Lucy in colour as Hetty brought into view the memories of him and Lucy that morning on the landing, and later on the kitchen floor.
Hetty had gone further into Lucy’s mind than she initially did with Severus, now she needed confirmation before she gave her verdict. Embarrassment was the last of their troubles if what she witnessed was correct.
She sat back down heavily, sifted through several pages, and settled down to read.
Severus and Lucy both looked at her flummoxed, each expecting an immediate explanation at the very least, and hopefully some insight to a solution. Their bewildered expressions turned on each other. Lucy shrugged, if gran wasn’t ready to tell them anything yet, she wouldn’t.
“I’m gonna take Maxi out.” Lucy said getting to her feet. When no one answered, she shrugged again and went to get her coat and boots.
“Wait, I… I may as well accompany you. I cannot foresee us getting clarification of our predicament any time soon.”
Witch and wizard crunched through the snow covered hills behind the cottage, Maxi’s coat becoming snow logged with every step he took until he was barely visible, other than a black nose.
Severus used his wand to free him of his burden, and Lucy wished his coat would repel the snow, leaving one very happy dog to restart his search for any small creatures wanting to play chase.
“Severus, when gran looked in your head, did she see… everything?”
“Eventually. Obviously she saw a little too much in yours, I am assuming that’s why she returned to me a second time.”
“It was embarrassing.”
“Extremely so.”
“Gran told you off.”
“She also told you off. I will be doing likewise if you do not drop the subject.”
“You blushed.”
“I most certainly did not. The room was overly warm.” Severus argued, glancing sideways to see her fighting a giggle.
“When gran watched… in the kitchen. I didn’t notice at the time, but there were… things, coloured things.”
“I too noticed those under legillimens, though at the time I was unaware of them.”
“Do you think they’re something to do with the bond, or just something between you and me?”
“Until your grandmother has finished her research, I prefer not to speculate.”
“You felt it didn’t you? Like I do. The need to… do it?”
“I did. This morning on the landing, and again in the kitchen. I believe it was merely a reflection of your own desires.”
“Not the first time it wasn’t. I was thinking more about filling my stomach with food. Then in the kitchen, you felt it before I did.”
“That is impossible.”
“Is it? Gran seemed awful interested in that part. She watched both times more than once.”
“Shout that stupid mop of yours. I think it time we had some answers.” he gruffed, turning and heading for the cottage without waiting for her.
