Face Off
“Severus,” she moaned his name. “I do not want to let you go.”
“I know,” he acknowledged. “But, the sooner we do this, the sooner we can be done with it all and spend the rest of our lives tormenting each other.” He smiled down at her as she dressed.
“Professor? Natalie?” Nathan called from the hallway. “It is time.”
“One last kiss, my dear?” Snape asked. Natalie brushed his lips with hers, holding him as tightly as her arms would allow.
“Nathan, we are ready,” Natalie called out.
Nathan and Cheatham entered the room cautiously.
“Professor Snape, the Aurors will conduct you and Mr. Malfoy to a cell at Azkaban. Mr. Shacklebolt has guaranteed your safe conduct,” Cheatham explained.
“As is necessary,” Snape agreed.
Natalie glared at the door, her arms crossed, clearly displeased. “Thomas, I do not like this plan at all.”
“We are well aware of that, Natalie,” soothed Nathan. “Trust us?”
“I do trust you!” she vowed. “I do not trust this Ministry or its minions.”
Shacklebolt entered with his Auror guards. “I assure you that my word is my bond,” he boomed at Natalie.
“Natalie,” Severus interrupted her next protest. “I do trust him.”
Everyone in the room stared at Snape, stunned into silence.
“Kingsley, let us be done with this now,” Snape motioned toward the door.
“Snape,” Kingsley started. “For some odd reason, the system at Azkaban is suddenly very full. You and Lucius will share a cell.” He grinned and chuckled. “If that is agreeable, then we can move forward.”
“Of course, Kingsley. I only endeavor to be accommodating,” Snape snidely replied.
“Good, good!” He continued to grin. “Now, be prepared. I granted access to Rufus. Of course,” Kingsley held up a hand to stop Natalie’s eminent rant. “He cannot interfere with the Auror Department.”
“If Severus trusts you, then so do I,” Natalie conceded unhappily. “When will I be permitted to visit?”
“Once a day, Lady Monterichelieu, by special order of the Head Auror, of course.” Kingsley bobbed his head to assure her.
“Let’s get this over with already,” Snape griped.
The whole group exited. In the other room, Lucius held Narcissa and Draco close as he whispered his goodbyes.
Scrimgeour burst down the hallway, screeching, “Arrest them all! All! Arrest them all!”
The two Aurors escorting him were forced to restrain him as he lunged at Natalie. Natalie glared coldly at him, rage rolling off of her in waves.
“Minister!” bellowed Shacklebolt. “I have this under control. You have to remember that Miss Monterichelieu is an American citizen! We have protocol to follow.” He nodded to the other two Aurors. Snape and Malfoy shared a quick glance before moving down the hallway, the Aurors directly behind them.
“Where are you taking them?” Scrimgeour demanded to know. “Unhand me! I am the Minister!”
Thomas followed the two Deatheaters and the Aurors. Kingsley motioned Natalie to the side. Narcissa Malfoy welcomed her with a genuinely warm embrace.
“Thank you for protecting my son,” Narcissa whispered in her ear.
“You are most welcome, Lady Malfoy,” Natalie replied, returning her embrace.
“Mr. Malfoy and Professor Snape are en route to Azkaban,” Shacklebolt calmly informed the spitting mad Minister.
“Well good for that! Now what about her!” he spat, pointing at Natalie.
“She is beyond ours, and your jurisdiction,” Shacklebolt again affirmed. “She is free to go.”
“What!” protested Scrimgeour.
“Minister,” Shacklebolt interjected firmly. “You cannot punish a citizen under the laws of another Ministry.”
“Well, we’ll just see about that,” Scrimgeour sputtered. “I will find a way to have you in court!” he hissed.”
“I will prove that you are a Deatheater, and you will rot in Azkaban,” Natalie coldly threw back at him as Nathan guided her down the hallway away from the scene.
“Natalie,” he whispered warningly. “Control your anger.”
Natalie glowered at him. “Do you really think I can’t keep my anger in check?” she demanded to know.
“No,” he answered with a smile. “No, I don’t. Now let’s get out of here.” He took her arm and escorted her down the hall.
“Where are we going? What about the others? Where will the Malfoys and Mr. Potter stay?” she asked, suddenly worried about everyone else. In the background, Scrimgeour continued to bellow at the Aurors who held him at bay in the common area so that he could not follow Natalie.
“We are all going to a safe house, courtesy of Mr. Potter,” Nathan explained to her. As they bunched into the elevator, Harry turned around to face her.
“I hope Grimmauld Place is ok for you, ma’am,” he offered shyly.
“Oh, Mr. Potter! No worries. I’ve been living in a barn for the last two years. And, please call me Natalie?” she smiled at him reassuringly.
“Okay!” he agreed readily. “And, I’m Harry. Just Harry, please?” he asked eagerly as the elevator zoomed towards the exits. “You lived in a barn?”
“Yes, Harry. I lived in a barn. I rather liked it there,” she explained with a sad smile.
“I’m rather glad you lived in that barn,” Draco interjected. “Thank you again, Natalie.”
“I’m confused,” Ron complained. “And hungry.”
“Of course you’re hungry, Ronald. You are always hungry,” Molly chided her youngest son. “I’ll start dinner as soon as we get to the house.”
“I’m still confused. Are you really Mrs. Snape?” he addressed Natalie incredulously.
“Yes, I am Mrs. Snape,” she chuckled. “My formal title, however, is Lady Monterichelieu. All a rather complicated transfer of title, property and powers,” she explained. “You are quite right to be confused. Sometimes, I’m not even sure I understand it all,” she admitted with a sigh.
“Right that!” he agreed.
“Harry, thank you for your hospitality,” she said as she patted him on the shoulder.
Mercifully, the doors to the elevator opened and the whole lot of them spilled out into the lobby.
“The Floo is open,” Minerva told everyone. “Please go directly there.”
In family groups, the bunch made their ways to the Floo grates.
“I fear we will be back here entirely too soon,” Nathan commented to Natalie as they waited patiently for their turn, their faces alternating illuminated by the flashing green light of the Floo powder.
“I fear we will not be back here soon enough,” she confessed, leaning against him as he put his arm around her shoulders to comfort her.
A/N: Sometimes you sit down to work on one story, and another one grabs hold of you and won’t let go. I’ve always felt bad at leaving Natalie and Snape at loose ends here. Long story involving a child’s magnetic toy and unguarded CD’s. Not a good mix. The ending was erased but I am going to finish this if it kills me.
Bear with me. I'm in the process of editing the early chapters for all of my horrible grammar errors. This was my second story ever. Boy, have I learned a lot since then. :D
Thanks for reading along,
