I own nothing but this sordid little tale. All characters belong to J.K. Rowling. I am not making any money by writing it. I must be insane.

The Grindelwald Legacy
Chapter 81
When Severus and Lucy walked in the back door after stamping the snow from their feet, Winky was waiting for them with mugs of hot chocolate and a beaming smile on her face.
“The miss is back, and the Snape too. Is good you is here. You drinks this and the mistress and the great Dumbledore is telling the big news.”
“What news?” Severus asked imperiously.
“Not Winky’s job to tell Sir. But Winky hears things and knows things. You drinks the hot chocolate, then you is finding out.”
The little elf took their coats after making sure Maxi went straight to his bed.
“What do you think they found out? Brr, if I wasn’t so cold I’d give the chocolate a miss.” Said Lucy, warming her fingers on the mug.
“Well do not expect me to wait around while you warm up. I intend to find out what we can do to get out of this mess.”
“You‘re going through like that?”
“Pardon? What is wrong with how I look?”
“Your nose is bright red, you look like Rudolph the red nosed… “
“I know who Rudolph is, though I fail to see why the colour of my nose should be of any concern to you.”
“It’s not, but if you go in there now they’re gonna look right at it.”
“And of course you would never deign to be so rude.” he groused, sitting opposite at the table and cradling his own mug of chocolate so he could inhale the fumes, and hopefully reduce the redness of his nose, as much to save his pride as his vanity.
“Of course I would.” Lucy quipped sarcastically. She also noticed him unconsciously rubbing at his nose when they did finally enter the living room and took their seats.
“Ah, you’re back then.” Albus stated needlessly.
“So it would appear Albus. I take it you have come up with a solution to this impossible bond Madam.” Severus asked, turning his attention to Hetty.
“There is no solution, it has gone too far. You two are as bonded as my dear departed husband Wulfric and I were.”
Severus could not believe what he was hearing. He spluttered and stood, arms folded in unconscious defence. “But that is… No. You were married, we are not. It is an entirely different situation, I find it preposterous you even think such a thing.”
“Severus please sit down.” Albus said wearily. “When Miss Grindelwald and yourself were… your first encounter together this morning, when your urges took precedence even when Miss Grindelwalds did not, that was the legacy’s penultimate phase. Later, when the two of you were both under it’s influence and unsurprisingly, neither of you were able to resist, that part of the legacy was fulfilled.”
Hetty took over. “Because of the seriousness of Fridays circumstances, Lucy’s natural unwavering determination to free you of the terrible effects of the Cruciatus, followed by her unfortunate ordeal with… shall we say, a number of partners, along with your regrettable position of having to witness what took place, and naturally, the fact you both willingly used the connection you shared to aid one another, only served to strengthen further what, I believe, may have started somewhat earlier than this weekend. Follow that with Saturdays tribulations, and as Albus mentioned, this morning, things appear to have culminated rather abruptly. The two of you are bound whether you like it or not.”
Severus, who was stood staring out of the front window, looked sideways at her, turned back to the window, then retuned to staring at Hetty as though he believed she was utterly mad. “Ridiculous.” He snapped. “With all due respect Madam Grindelwald, I have never heard anything so incredibly absurd as what you are suggesting. You cannot expect me to believe what you say is true, simply because of some fairy tale passed down from generation to generation.”
Lucy, open mouthed, just looked from Hetty to Severus, to Hetty to Severus, her head moving side to side as though watching a tennis match.
“It is all written down here Severus, you are most welcome to peruse it at your leisure.” She offered.
“I do not care what it says, I am not bound to your granddaughter. I agreed to help you in the belief that once this weekend was over, I would no longer have to endure the rampant activities of an underage student in my house. Nothing was said about the risk of… all of this. Let me know when you have all come to your senses and know of a way to break this legacy, this curse, until that time I have an appointment with Henry Lane and the killing curse, the idiotic student responsible for all of this.”
Before anyone could react, Severus stalked from the room, grabbed his cloak and slammed the door on his way out, apparating the moment he reached the gate.
“Gran?” Lucy spoke quietly, a nervous tremor to her voice. “This is a joke yeah? Your just saying all this to wind us up because you’re mad at me for seeing the Bony man?”
“I find nothing amusing about what took place this weekend Lucy. Both you and Severus could quite easily have died at the hands of that tyrant. Now as much as it distresses me that the bond is sealed so soon, Severus is your match, and eventually it would have taken hold anyway. I just would have preferred it happened later, rather than sooner.”
“No gran, there must be something we can do. You heard him, as much as he helped me, he hates my rudd… bloomin guts.”
“Severus does not hate you.” Albus said kindly. “He is angry yes, angry at the situation, much like yourself. But you must understand that Severus leads an extremely difficult life, a life that for the most part, is not his own. He has not the freedom to experience life the way most young wizards would, he has not had the good fortune to do what he wants, when or how he would like. He lives his life ‘on the edge’ so to speak, as such he refuses to accept what he knows is truth. He will… adjust, given time. Which reminds me, I believe I have a young Hufflepuff to rescue. He was the student responsible for your initial meeting with my Potions Master. Please, do excuse the abrupt departure of both Severus and myself.”
Severus stormed into the Great Hall in the middle of lunch, pulled the terrified second year Henry Lane from his seat without a word, and marched him in the direction of the dungeons before any of the staff could even react.
Albus was, fortunately, just in time to see him dragging the poor unfortunate by the collar along the dungeon corridor. “Professor Snape, a word if you please. In my office. Mr Lane, perhaps you would be good enough to return to the Great Hall, I am certain that whatever business you and the Potion master have can be rescheduled for a later date.”
Henry Lane, ghostly white and too frightened and confused to be relieved at the sight of the headmaster, daren’t move until the Professor snarled at him. Then he ran for his life, not pausing to wonder why on earth he’d been absconded by the greasy bat of the dungeon.
“Albus, I do not appreciate your interference in matters that do not concern you.”
“The possible loss of life or limb of a student at the hands of one of my Professors is my concern Severus. Now if you would not mind escorting me to my office.”
“You cannot blame a boy’s accidental spillage of ingredients for what has happened Severus.” Albus told him once they were in the headmasters tower.
“Why not? It was the boys clumsiness that caused me to be in the apothecary that day. I would never have had the misfortune to be anything other than another Professor to her had that not happened.”
“Not so Severus, your paths were destined to cross. It was not the fact you made her acquaintance in Diagon Alley that led to the current situation. You are her counterpart whether you want to be or not. Neither of you had a say in the matter, it just is.”
“Well it can just ‘not be’. Albus the girl is sixteen for Merlin’s sake, and her grandmother is trying to marry us off. How far from the ideal partner is it possible to get than me. I cannot be engaged to anyone, let alone one of my students.”
“You misunderstand Severus, you are not engaged to Miss Grindelwald.”
The Potion Master stopped his vigorous pacing and wild gesticulating to look at the headmaster sceptically. “I’m not? So this… this bond can be revoked, I can be free of her?”
“You are not listening to me Severus. You are not engaged, you are already married. To Lucy. She is for all intents and purposes, your wife.”
