Nathan stopped outside the door of the parlor, listening intently at the conversation between Kingsley, Minerva and Thomas. Minerva’s voice was shrill in her protests.
“He is the Minister of Magic!” she shrieked, outrage and frustration evident even through the closed door.
“Nevertheless, Madam, he is marked. There is no Side-Along to a Summons such as Mrs. Snape utilized at Malfoy Manor,” Thomas intoned calmly as he attempted to make the two members of the Order of the Phoenix understand their absolute confidence in Natalie.
“There is no way at all that Dolores could have dragged him along?” Kingsley asked intently, leaning heavily on the mantel with one hand while shaking his head, tiredly.
“Absolutely not,” Nathan interjected for the weary attorney as he pushed the door open. “I am still quite stunned by the lack of education on the part of your community. I would have thought with a Dark Lord running amok, your authorities would have researched the bonding requirements more thoroughly.”
“It is all dark magic!” McGonagall protested angrily. “We don’t dabble in the Dark Arts!” she shot the accusation with venom, clearly offended.
“Well you should have at least educated yourselves,” Nathan retorted.
“The books and such are all classified as Dark Arts as well, Nathan,” Kingsley interjected. “Not easily accessible by most wizards.”
“Ridiculous!” Nathan continued. “How can you fight against what you don’t understand? If you had armed yourselves with information, we wouldn’t be here right now! So, yes, I wish you had dabbled -- yes, Professor. If any of you had taken the bond rituals and marks seriously, this sort of nightmare would not have happened. Even your so-called Dark Lord only dabbled. His marks were a one-way channel. A true bonding mark is a two-way street,” Nathan lectured sternly, his patience wearing thin, anger bubbling near the surface of his controlled exterior.
“How can we prove that the Minister is marked?” Kingsley redirected the assembly.
“I suggest a full-body bind curse and stripping him,” Nathan commented darkly, glowering into the fire to avoid further angering the witch and wizard who were severely testing his patience.
“Now, Nathan,” Thomas stepped in. “We can’t expect anyone to violate his precious rights like that,” Thomas soothed with a sarcastic edge in his voice.
Minerva gave up, retreating to a wing chair to sink tiredly into it, waving her hand at the men. “Please explain how we are to go about proving or disproving your sister’s claims?”
“If Natalie summoned the DeathEaters once more, say through some powerful anti-Apparation wards, would that be enough proof for your Aurors and your Wizengamot?” Nathan asked smoothly, tamping down his trepidation and irritation.
“It would be enough proof for me,” Kingsley agreed. “I am already inclined to believe her,” he added shooting a look at Minerva.
“Is it possible to convene the Wizengamot without Scrimgeour being present?” Thomas asked, regaining some of his composure.
“Possible, yes,” Kingsley started. “Likely, no.”
“Shall we ponder how to increase that likelihood over dinner?” Nathan offered. “Silently, of course. The less people who know of any plans we make, the better. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mr. Scrimgeour was somehow tipped off.”
“Are you suggesting we would tell him?” Kingsley bellowed, offended.
“Not you, Auror,” Thomas corrected him. “Someone who perhaps wishes to protect him, regardless of his status.”
A knock sounded at the door, just in time to stop McGonagall from sputtering more protests. She pressed her lips together and sat back in her chair, silently.
“Nathan?” Noah called through the door. “Is everything alright?”
“Come in,” Nathan answered.
“What’s going on in here?” he wondered aloud as he opened the door, feeling the tension in the room escalate.
“Discussing ways of proving Natalie’s claim about the Minister of Magic,” Thomas explained with a heavy sigh.
Noah shrugged. “Make him strip. If he were innocent, he should be more than willing to prove it.”
“Problem is that we know he isn’t innocent, Noah. He won’t willingly prove it to their satisfaction,” Nathan commented sarcastically as he motioned towards Kingsley and McGonagall.
“I suggested having Natalie summon him once more through anti-Apparation wards,” Nathan caught his brother up to speed.
Noah shot him a look of utter disbelief. “Are you insane?” he sputtered at his brother. “Whose Mark do you plan on corrupting?”
“No, desperate,” Nathan spat back. “And I don’t know. Perhaps someone their Ministry has already sentenced for the Kiss?”
“Care to explain why that is such an insane idea?” Kingsley interrupted. “And perhaps why someone who is scheduled for a Dementor’s kiss?
“Well, I will,” Noah hissed. “Using Voldemort’s …” Minerva’s hiss of disapproval stopped him. He glared at her, angry. “It is only a word now, a name, madam. No reason to accord more respect to the evil bastard than necessary,” he growled at her. “Using Voldemort’s summoning mark, the Dark Mark, is difficult not only for Natalie but it will be extremely dangerous to the person whose Mark she uses.”
“Why?” Shacklebolt asked, curiously as he moved to the sofa to sit.
“Because Voldemort’s Marks were incomplete. They do not work properly. If the bond had been settled both ways, Natalie would have assumed all of Voldemort’s responsibilities as well as rights, the Marks would have changed to her Eagle/Serpent mark and she could summon anyone.”
“Only Severus’ Mark changed …” Kingsley whispered.
“Very good, Shacklebolt,” Nathan added sarcastically. “But his wasn’t the only Mark to change. We had two others who were marked by Voldemort but had already sworn allegiance to Natalie. Their Marks changed as well.”
“She can’t use those Marks to summon the DeathEaters because they aren’t corrupted now. They are wholly and completely hers,” Noah pressed on.
“So the Dark Mark alone doesn’t work for her?” Kingsley asked. “I’m afraid you have confused me, gentlemen.”
Thomas cleared his throat, ready to jump into the fray. “Mr. Shacklebolt, Voldemort’s Dark Marks were designed by him to be a one-way Wizarding Wireless in effect. He could broadcast and Summon through it, but his followers could not, if necessary for instance, send out a distress call. A true bonding mark is a two-way wireless, sending and receiving. It allows the Lord, or Natalie in this instance, to know if her pledges are safe, injured, in need, etc.”
“Oh!” Kingsley nodded his head enthusiastically. “Voldemort would never have wanted anyone to be able to reach him through the Marks!”
“Exactly!” Nathan exclaimed, relieved that Kingsley finally understood.
“Now that Voldemort is dead, truly dead, no Horcrux left, his Marks are horribly unstable,” Nolan continued.
“It would take an immensely powerful wizard to survive a Summoning through that Mark if done by Natalie,” Thomas informed them all.
“Find another way,” Natalie groused as she pushed into the now crowded sitting room.
“Natalie, I’m not sure there is another way,” Nathan murmured under his breath.
“Who, Nathan? Who would I use? How would I summon their precious Minister so as to convince the entire British Wizarding Community? Who would I condemn to a painful death for the greater glory here?” she fired at him, sharply but her voice quiet, controlled.
Nathan stared at her dolefully, silently wishing her to understand that she would not like his answer but to trust him. His eyes pleaded with her as they stared at each other across the room. Finally, she nodded almost imperceptibly and Nathan smiled.
“I suggest that we ask Lucius Malfoy to volunteer,” Nathan stated calmly, waiting for the explosion of protests.
“What!” Kingsley roared. “I though you wanted him to be protected!”
“We do. He is strong enough. He will survive. You will then pardon him, completely,” Nathan lay his plan on the table, ignoring Natalie’s hissing protests.
“This might work,” Shacklebolt offered, a plan clearly forming in his mind. “This might just work.”
