“Absolutely not,” Natalie stated quietly but with a quality of conviction that made everyone turn to study her.
Nathan drew a deep breath, glared at his sister and scowled. “Natalie …” he only got that far before she gracefully rose to her feet and fixed her dead calm stare on her brother. He bit back the rest of his words, knowing full well that he had lost the argument.
“No, Nathan. I will not risk Lucius’ life just to prove a point,” Natalie affirmed her position.
Kingsley Shacklebolt stood to the side and studied her carefully. He folded his arms across his chest to observe exactly how the Montrichelieu would solve their problem.
“Thomas, is there not some rule of law or procedure that would allow us to demand a trial, quickly, before the little bastard can regroup?” Natalie questioned her attorney, her cool demeanor masking how irate she truly was.
“I believe there is …” Thomas offered, hoping to assuage her rising anger.
“Good,” she snapped. “Do it. Put me on the stand. Let him come after me and I’ll prove it for everyone there.”
“Care to elaborate on that plan, Natalie?” Noah asked, concerned as he watched his sister’s face darken.
“Not at this time, Noah,” she replied softly. “I am hungry, tired, and my patience has taken too much of a beating over these last years. I want to hold my husband. I want to sleep in my bed. I want to attend to my own family and be done with this Voldemort and DeathEater business once and for all. The Minister wants to play games, then I will deal the first hand.” She nodded to Thomas and swept out of the room, leaving the assembly to stare after her in disbelief.
“Thomas?” Nathan turned to their solicitor with a questioning look of sheer terror on his face.
“I must obey her wishes,” Thomas instructed. “I answer to her now.”
“This cannot possibly work out for the best,” Noah whispered.
McGonagal and Shacklebolt stared at each other, concern etching deep lines on their faces.
“Mandatum Exigo,” whispered Thomas.
“Pardon?” Shacklebolt asked.
“We can demand Mandatum Exigo. She is a US citizen, not British. Under the International Accords, she has the right to expedited charges so that she can return to her homeland to attend to her businesses.”
“Thomas, do you really think that is such a smart move?” Nathan countered.
“I don’t think any of this was a smart move,” Thomas groused. “I do think Natalie is brilliant. If we catch him off guard, she can draw him out.”
Natalie leaned against the wall outside of the meeting room. She closed her eyes, shaking her head.
“Child, are you well?” Narcissa inquired politely as she came around the corner of the stairs.
“I will be as soon as all of this nonsense is put to rest,” Natalie managed a weak smile for her new friend.
“Come, let us see what there is to eat. I’m famished and I’m sure you are as well.”
“I am quite hungry,” Natalie agreed. “Not as hungry as Severus though,” she added in a whisper, not wanting to alarm the beautiful aristocrat. “Just a moment, Narcissa. I want to tell my solicitor something.” She shoved the door back open to reveal hushed tones that stopped instantly. “Thomas, I wish to visit my husband – tomorrow. I will also visit with Mr. Malfoy at that time. I trust that won’t be a problem?” she stared pointedly at Shacklebolt.
“I’ll make the arrangements,” Thomas asserted with his attempt at a reassuring smile in return.
“Thank you,” she acknowledged. “I am hungry and will be joining Mrs. Malfoy in the kitchen if any of you would care to join us as well.” She slipped back out into the hall and started for the kitchen.
“I have sworn protection to your family, Narcissa. Do not fear my fidelity,” Natalie vowed to the platinum haired woman who waited for her.
“I have no fears as far as you are concerned, Natalie,” Narcissa reassured her with the closest thing to a warm style she could conjure.
“We shall visit this Azkaban tomorrow,” Natalie informed her as Narcissa pushed open the heavy kitchen door.
“I shall dress accordingly,” Narcissa replied in her best aristocrat tone, clearly aware of the audience inside the kitchen; an audience with had fallen silent when she entered the room.
“Mother?” Draco called to his mother, curious and mildly concerned. His pale eyes scoured her face for signs of distress.
“We shall visit your father and godfather tomorrow, Draco,” she informed him softly.
“When?” Draco inquired, valiantly trying to mask the incredulity in his voice.
“When my solicitor informs us that the arrangements have been made,” Natalie added as she glided past Narcissa to take a seat on the long bench at one side of the table.
“Should our solicitor be there as well?” Draco addressed Natalie.
“I believe that would be a very wise choice,” Natalie praised him as she smiled and nodded at the other people gathered around the table. Fred Weasley was eying her coolly; appraising this stranger in their midst. Natalie met his forthright gaze without hesitation; waited for him to blink, then began to fix herself a plate. She lowered her gaze to her lap where she draped a napkin. “This is a wonderful meal. Thank you, Mrs. Weasley?” she complimented the chef.
“Oh, it’s nothing, dear. Please eat up! Eat!” Molly bustled about, blushing faintly from Natalie’s praise.
“What’s going to happen now?” Harry asked, his green eyes clouded with worry and concern.
“We will prove this Minister is marked. He will be jailed with the others. A new Minister will be elected. I shall take my husband home.” Natalie calmly added each phrase with deliberation and icy control over her raging emotions.
