After the tense, mostly silent meal, Natalie retired to her rooms, leaving the majority of the household at the table. As soon as the door to her room clicked shut, Elyse popped up, ready and eager to serve.
“Oh, Elyse! I missed you so!” Natalie gushed with a smile as she flopped quite inelegantly on the bed.
“Happy is Elyse to serve again,” the little elf bowed, grinning from ear to ear.
“Can you pack a picnic hamper and the warmest blankets you can find? Perhaps a bottle of whiskey?”
“For Mistress Natalie? I packs anything!” and with a pop, the elf disappeared.
Natalie fell backwards onto the bed to stare at the ceiling. A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.
“Yes?”
“Nat? It’s Nathan.”
“Come on in already,” she grumped,
“Are you okay?” he asked before flopping onto her bed next to her.
“No. Not a damn thing about any of this is okay.”
“It will be though. Right?”
“I have to believe that, Nathan. How else can I go on?”
“Faith.”
“Yeah, lots of that I guess. Will you call for me just before dawn?”
He sat bolt upright and rolled to peer down at her in surprise.
“Why? Where are you going?”
“Where do you think I’m going?” she answered coolly. “As soon as he hears me and calls …”
Nathan stared at his sister thoughtfully, a kernel of an idea forming, growing as he pondered.
“If you can answer his call through their wards …” he whispered.
“YES!” she exclaimed. “That’s perfect!” Then her face fell. “I can’t use Severus’ mark anymore.”
“I think you can use Lucius,” Nathan started to explain, only to be interrupted by Elyse popping into the room with a neatly packaged bundle.
“He would have to swear fealty, Nathan. I cannot begin to tell you how much I do NOT want another soul to swear fealty to me.”
“I think, now hear me out – “ he stopped her from interrupting his thoughts. “I think in spirit he already has. The instant he chose to fight for you and all. You can accept his pledge, use the mark to summon the last lying bastard through their damned wards, in front of Shacklebolt and whoever else needs proof, then convert Lucius’ mark – he’d be free too!”
“I suppose this could work. Can you arrange it with Shacklebolt? I can speak with Lucius when I go?”
“I’ll take care of this side. You take care of them.” Nathan sprang to his feet, energized and renewed with his plan.
“Mistress, I packs everything you ask. And a chocolate cake.” Elyse practically beamed.
“A cake? Where did you find a cake?”
“Never worries, Mistress. Elyse knowing what you like.” The little elf set the package on the end of her bed and popped away.
Closing her eyes, Natalie steadied her breathing, relaxing into a meditative state, calling to Severus as she did. “Summon me. Summon me. Summon me,’ she whispered over and over until she felt her mark start to tingle. Smiling, she summoned a heavy cloak, draped it over her shoulders then scooped Elyse’s package into her arms. She closed her eyes and answered her husband’s call, disappearing in a bluish white flash of light only to flash into form inside a small, cold cell in Azkaban.
“That is truly impressive,” drawled Lucius.
“A master has the choice to answer a summons,” Natalie answered with a small smile. “Much as your master’s servants had to answer his summons. A good Master answers those who have pledged their fealty when they have a great need. ”
“I did not even realize that we could have summoned him,” Lucius added.
Natalie peered around herself in the dark cell. Spying Severus behind her, she moved to set her package down on his cot.
“He did not want you to know,” Natalie grumbled. “Here, help me unpack these things. I suppose these are what your Ministry deems to be the deluxe accommodations?”
“At least we are together, yes?” Lucius added as he rose to inspect the things Natalie brought through the wards.
“Makes this easier, yes.” She handed him a blanket.
“This will make the night easier as well,” he added as he spread the soft, heavy blanket over his cot. “These nasty striped things do not provide much warmth.”
“Indeed,” griped Severus as he lifted the picnic basket to allow Natalie to spread the second blanket on his cot.
“There, now, let’s see what is for dinner, shall we?” Natalie smiled at Severus as he resettled on his cot, holding the picnic basket for Natalie to unpack further. “Mmmmm, she did pack a whole cake!”
“Cake?” Severus peered over the lid. “Chocolate?”
“Yes,” Natalie replied cheerfully.
“Perfect!” Lucius chimed in.
“Should help with the dementor effect, eh?” Natalie chuckled as she spread their meal out, moving to make way for the men to make their plates.
“This should help ease all of the ill effects,” Lucius praised between bites.
“Hopefully,” started Natalie. “I can’t imagine what horrible meal was served here.”
“No meal was served, Natalie,” growled Snape.
“Indeed not,” Lucius added. “One a day and we were too late to the ball!”
“Barbaric!”
“Truly,” Snape agreed.
“I will never understand,” she grimaced, settling onto Snape’s cot and scooting out of the way. “This is a bit close for three, eh?”
Lucius chuckled. Snape smirked at her, “It was meant for one.”
“Yes, but we’re ever so lucky to share!” Lucius added with a flourish of his fork.
“Well it is more convenient for me,” Natalie started.
“Really?” Snape asked.
“Yes, of course! I can feed you two at the same time. Plus, I need to speak with Lucius about a very pressing matter.”
“I’m not certain I can be of much assistance under the current circumstances, Lady Monterichelieu.” Lucius inclined his head in a manner to indicate the small confines of their cell.
“I’m certain you can be of great assistance, even under these dismal current circumstances,” Natalie assured him. “Would you care to end this farce tomorrow?” she added with a grin.
“How?” both men asked at once.
“Let me explain how that abysmal excuse of a mark should work first …”
Natalie began to explain the skeletal plan that she and Nathan hatched. Lucius’ eyes grew wide in astonishment at first, then his jaw set in determination.
“I pledge to you my fealty from this day until the last,” he murmured respectfully.
“Is that enough?” Snape asked Natalie. “Should we perhaps make a more serious vow?”
“No, I believe that is quite enough. For now.”
“Good. Now hand over that cake!” Lucius held out his hands.
“Natalie?”
“Yes, Severus?”
“How are you going to get out of here before the guards come in the morning?”
“Nathan will summon me just before dawn. I simply answer his call as I answered yours.”
“Rather convenient for us. Seems inconvenient down the road though. There are more than a few people who you are bound to, yes?” Lucius wondered aloud.
"All the more reason to choose the bonds very carefully,” Natalie answered wisely.
“I am honored to be chosen,” Lucius murmured. “But for now, with a full belly and a warm blanket beckoning, I am simply tired. May we sleep now?”
“Of course,” Natalie agreed, repacking the picnic hamper and setting it on the floor. “I must admit that I’m quite tired as well. Tomorrow should be another long day. Severus, are you ready to sleep?”
“Yes, indeed. I do fear we must share this rather small cot.”
“Better to feel close to you,” Natalie murmured with a yawn. “Shall we?”
“Please?” He held the blankets back, settling into the cot with his back to the wall. Beckoning to his wife, he smiled as Natalie settled close to him, her back to his chest.
“Sleep well, Lucius,” Natalie called over.
“And you two as well.”
