“Natalie?” Snape called her name softly, sleep disturbed as she slipped from the hard cot in the pre-dawn gloom. He struggled to focus on her dark form in the shadows.
“Yes?” She shrugged into her cloak, turning to face him.
“Already?”
“Yes. Nathan is calling.”
She sat down on next to him. Lucius opened one eye, groggily staring at the pair.
“This hour is more indecent than the setting,” he grumbled, his face wrinkled in a very displeased scowl.
“Agreed,” both Natalie and Snape chuckled darkly. “Miss Natalie always did prefer early mornings though,” Snape continued, remembering the young witch on the Astronomy Tower. He smiled despite himself. Natalie's concern brought him back to the present.
“Lucius, are you certain you want to do this?” Natalie asked him with a heavy sigh. “I do not expect it to be a pleasant experience.”
Lucius rolled onto his back and laughed, loudly. “Nothing about the last few years has been … pleasant.” He shook his head. “I can say with certainty that I would rather try your plan than rot away here.”
“If I cannot force the connection …” she fretted, fussing with the buttons on her cloak.
“The end result would be the same as leaving me in here, m'Lady,” Lucius sat up, then slipped to one knee on the floor. “My faith in you is vast. I have seen what you can accomplish. If you can prove Scrimgeour's complicity in --” he faltered over saying the name. With a deep breath to steady, he continued, “Voldemort's plans, I am fully prepared to sacrifice anything to rid the world completely from that bastard's influence. I know you will protect and defend my family regardless of the outcome today.”
Snape stared at his comrade in shock. Natalie shifted to face him. Lucius raised his eyes to hers, offering his hands.
“My word is my oath and my bond,” Lucius completed the fealty oath regardless of Natalie's misgivings. The magic swirled briefly around their joined hands, settling into their skin.
“Lucius!” gasped the woman. She raised his hands to her lips, kissing his knuckles in acceptanace of his oath. “Lucius!” she gasped again. “You are a genius!”
“Pardon?”
“I am sworn to protect my own!” she nearly giggled, “The magic should protect you through the summoning!”
“Should?” Snape inquired.
“I believe it is the best option we have at present, Severus,” Malfoy spoke with a slight grimace.
“A better option than before,” Natalie added. “I shall endeavor to free you once we finish this business.”
“Would not the magic be stronger if ritual were completed?” Snape asked with a tinge of concern.
“Yes, but I would not be able to free him at the end,” Natalie turned to stare into her mate's eyes.
Snape placed one hand against her cheek. “Have you considered asking Lucius what he wants?”
“Does it not matter what I want?” she hissed. “I've never wanted to bind anyone to me!”
“I believe you have to accept that as a foregone conclusion, my witch.” Snape smiled sadly.
“Natalie,” Lucius interrupted. “I freely pledge my bond. Finish the ritual.”
“Wait!” Snape exclaimed. “Is it the same bond that we share?”
“Severus,” she growled with a roll of her eyes, “Really, do you know so little about bonding?”
“Forgive me if my previous experience has been severely limited.”
“No, love. It is not the same bonding. I need to speak with Nathan before we do this though.”
“Nathan?” Severus' curiosity was piqued. “Why?”
“If I finish the bond now, Lucius' mark will become my mark. I will not be able to use it. However, as he pledged already, once I summon the last of the un-incarcerated DeathEaters, no matter his state, I should be able to complete the bond.”
She helped Lucius stand and rose herself. She turned to Severus and pulled him to his feet. She leaned up and kissed him. “Stay strong for me. Cheatham and Shacklebolt are to arrange our “visit” today. One way or the other, this ends today.”
Severus bent and kissed her again. She turned and embraced Lucius. Picking up the basket, she faded into the same blue-white light and disappeared.
Reforming in her room at Grimmauld Place, Natalie dropped the basket on her bed.
“Took your time, sis.” Nathan drawled, setting his coffee mug onto her side table and folding the newspaper he was reading.
“I needed that time, Nathan,” she sighed sadly, then continued, “Is everything set?”
“Yes. Shacklebolt arranged everything. We will meet at this Azkaban prison, with the highest ranking members of the Wizengamot, minus their idiot minister.”
“Good. Lucius agreed.” She stripped off her cloak. Elyse appeared from nowhere to take it.
“Excellent,” Nathan added.
“He swore his fealty,” Natalie added as she stared deep into her brother's eyes.
“Even more good news!” Nathan smiled. “No one would ever expect a Malfoy to pledge to you!” He nodded in approval. “Wait! He can't! The Mark!”
“He only made the oath, Nathan. I have not completed the bond … yet.” She shook her head in consternation.
“My apologies, sis. I should have known!”
“Nathan, if the summoning goes wrong for him ...” she hesitated, took a deep breath and continued, “will I be able to complete the bond if he is … shall we just say, unconscious?”
“Yes. Yes. I can't think of anything that would stop the bond from forming. Once completed, your magic would revive and heal, would it not?”
“I certainly hope so.”
“Natalie ...” Nathan sighed as he lay down the newspaper. “I ...”
“I know,” she cut him off. “I know.”
Nathan rose, opening his arms as he did. “Come here.”
Natalie moved towards him, gladly welcoming his embrace. “Thank you, Nathan. Thank you for everything,” she whispered into his shirt.
“No need for thanks, but you are welcome.” He kissed her head. “Let's go make some breakfast? I hate to think of facing this day on an empty stomach.”
Natalie nodded against his chest, eyes welling up. “At least not all of us should have to face this day hungry.”
“Huh?” Nathan asked as he released her.
“Nothing.” She smiled up at him weakly. “This will all be over soon, yes?”
“Yes, Nat. Yes!” Nathan beamed down at her, jerking his head towards the door.
Natalie led the way to the door, leaving Nathan to gather his things and follow her.
