Chapter 87
He was astounded at her audacity that she had again, purposely listened in on the Order. Not as astounded as he was however when he observed what she did to get to him. Her shifts were ingenious to say the least. It would have been so easy to take the shape of the Nundu again, but that would have ensured the deaths of everyone in those tunnels, he and his colleagues included. The Lethifold, though slow, was thorough and silent. He growled when she fought off Lupins advances to her she-wolf form, if Lupin had taken her, even though he knew as a man he would never have done so, Severus would have called him out and killed him at the first opportunity.
His anger at Lupin faded however when he got to the part when it was just her and Greyback. Now he felt the same despair and anguish he’d felt yesterday when he was unable to get into that room with her. ‘So that is what she used the double edged finger blades for. Resourceful.’ He thought.
Once he had viewed the pensive, he took it through to the kitchen so the rest of the Order could take a look, all the while wishing he had not been stupid enough to make that last oath to Lou.
Remus was distraught when he realised what he tried to do to Lou in his werewolf form and Albus told him he should not be upset. Lou had made no complaints and had rectified the situation before anything untoward happened between them.
Still, he could not apologise enough to Severus and wanted to do the same with Lou.
“It would only serve to embarrass her Lupin, she clearly does not hold it against you and as the Headmaster said, nothing happened. Had it done so, you would not be standing here now.” Severus told him, a lethal glint in his eyes.
“What the bloody hell were those things she used on Greyback?” Moody asked.
“These.” Severus removed the finger blades from his pocket. “Do not touch them Lupin, they are made of the purest silver.” Putting one on, he flicked his hand to show how the blades appeared.
“Wicked.” Tonks exclaimed.
“Err, could we borrow those?” One of the Weasley twins asked hopefully.
“No you cannot.” Molly screeched at her son as she batted him on the head with a wooden spoon.
“Those are from the Maatila. We found a room full of weapons during the holidays. I didn’t realise Lou had taken anything from there.” Hermione stated, appalled at the barbaric looking things.
“It is just as well she did on this occasion.” Severus said.
Kingsley picked one up to examine it. “You know I wondered at the glint in her hands when we finely got into that room. But they seemed to disappear and I honestly did not give them a second thought. A room full of weapons did you say?” He turned to Hermione with this final question.
“Yes. But it was horrible, the weapons, all of them were deadly looking things.”
“That is the general purpose of weaponry Miss Granger.” Severus told her dryly.
The rest of the Order seemed not to agree with her however and Severus asked where exactly the room was located.
Hermione told them begrudgingly, all the time muttering about boys and their toys.
The men were eager to see the weapons and arranged to travel by portkey sometime in the New Year to examine the room.
Lou now had a choice of whether or not she wished to return to Karkias or Hogwarts. The Deatheaters were all safely rounded up, and the Dementors, although still a danger to everyone, were not the type of creature to actively single out any one person.
The Order decided she was their greatest weapon and Severus was forced to reluctantly agree.
She was torn. She really wanted to go to Hogwarts, at the same time that would mean Hermione would be at Karkias on her own. Still, Severus, as pig headed and arrogant as he was, was still her husband and she wanted to be with him.
“Lou you don’t need to worry about me. I am perfectly happy to return there on my own if you prefer to remain at Hogwarts. Besides, you know what I’m like when it comes to studying; I lose myself in my books and am terrible company. In fact I still feel guilty about getting such a wonderful education at your expense.”
“Don’t start that again. If you’re happy to go on your own, then I’m happy to go to Hogwarts. You will come back for Remus and Tonks’ wedding though?”
“Try and stop me.” Hermione said with a smile, hugging her friend.
On New Years day, Albus arranged a small party at number 12 to celebrate Lou and Severus’ first wedding anniversary, and the engagement of Tonks and Remus.
Only Lou and Severus, Albus and Minerva, Remus and Tonks, and Kingsley, Charlie, Molly and Arthur attended.
It was during this time that Severus took Remus aside and gave him the employment offer, along with the deeds to one of the London mansions. “I assure you it was my wife’s idea to give you two the mansion Lupin.” Severus told him with a glower. “If you tell her I told you that you will regret it. My solicitor has finalised everything so the deal is irrevocable and the reason I am giving you the documents now is to give you both an opportunity to arrange the house to you liking before you have the proverbial ball and chain around your ankle. No thanks are required and we would prefer this stays between the four of us.”
Severus turned and joined his wife, leaving Remus totally gob smacked.
He knew the werewolf had told Tonks when half an hour later they all heard a loud screech drift through from the kitchen.
Lou was a bit miffed when she saw Tonks’ engagement ring. She hid it well however, knowing it was unfair to envy something a ridiculous as a ring.
Still, she looked at her own bare finger, her mind drifting back to thoughts she’d had as a little girl, of a fairytale wedding with a white dress and flowers.
She tried her best to seem enthusiastic for Tonks and Remus’ sake, laughing when Molly took it upon herself to take over the arrangements for their wedding and insisting that Tonks have a ‘proper wedding’ as she called it, nothing outlandish as Tonks was sure to want.
Remus did his best to stay clear of the arrangements. All he wanted to was have Tonks as his wife, the details were best left to the witches as far as he was concerned. He accepted Severus’ offer of employment immediately, glad to be able to bring in a regular living wage for the first time since he’d been the DADA Professor at Hogwarts, and look after his wife.
He, Charlie, Arthur and Kingsley had all been given a small, red phial of potion to take under the watchful eye of Severus Snape. They were not given any reason for the change from the usual healing potions, only told that this was the only time they would receive it and that Lou would testify to it’s capabilities as regards it’s curative powers.
Lou enjoyed her time with Hermione, Ginny and the others. She and Ron even managed to put their differences aside and grow comfortable around each other once again. She noticed that Severus would often scowl at her though whenever he found her alone with the youngest Weasley boy, even though they were only playing wizards chess.
Ron had tried to bring up their past relationship once and apologise, but when Lou left the room in the middle of his speech, he decided it was best left buried.
Lou also played with Laina a lot, loving the elfin to bits. Laina in turn, followed Lou everywhere, always at her side and looking up at her adoringly. The little elfin would clamber onto Lou’s knee and snuggle into her lap whenever Lou sat down to read or talk with her friends, much to the annoyance of Peg and Kreatcher, who believed that elves should not be so familiar with their mistress.
Unfortunately the first words Laina leaned to say were courtesy of Ron Weasley. The little elf shouted ‘Bloody Hell’ each time someone approached her and Peg and Kreatcher were not at all happy about it, regardless of the fact that everyone else found it hilarious. Even Severus was forced to contain a smile at times.
Lou pleaded for them to leave Laina be, saying she loved having the elfin with her. Lou and Ginny spent ages making tiny outfits for Laina, though Ginny always had to be the one to give them to her so as not to free the baby elf. Even at a young age Laina would have been devastated to get clothes from her mistress.
A large celebration was held at new year, Hermione returned to Karkias academy and now most of the people who’d filled the house were absent.
Only she and Severus, Ginny and Molly remained as it was time to return to Hogwarts.
Lou wondered what her and Severus’ living arrangements would be like now, but couldn’t pluck up the nerve to ask. After all, she was not really a student at Hogwarts nay more. She and Hermione had both received the maximum number of NEWT’s, Lou scoring slightly higher than Hermione because of Severus’ education spells and her own unique abilities.
Severus and Lou were both somewhat surprised to discover that Lou’s personal rooms no longer existed. They had been re-incorporated back into Severus’ quarters, though Lou’s the kitchen remained and she was quick to make use of it.
Also all of their belongings were now housed in Severus’ rooms, making them ‘their’ rooms.
Albus suggested she assist as and where needed in the classrooms, years one to five being her main priority so as not to cause undue discomfiture to herself or her peers in years six and seven.
Lou thought this was a brilliant idea and Severus was at ease knowing she would be left with less time to think up mischief.
Although they shared Severus’ bed, he refused point blank to have full intercourse with Lou until her seventeenth birthday. Lou of course found other ways to garner his interest. She was no longer shy at coming forward and Severus was hard pushed to hold back most times, although he definitely was not complaining as Lou became more and more inventive in ways of giving and getting pleasure.
Severus was more and more tempted with the thought of buggering her, especially with the way she reacted to his fingers invading her anal passage.
Because they missed out on Christmas, Lou made a cake for Severus’ birthday on the 9th January and secretly invited the Headmaster and other staff to a dinner party in celebration of it.
When Lou found out that evening the Headmaster was planning a Valentines day ball she was excited and asked if she could be included in the preparations.
He in turn was delighted to let her take the helm and Lou soon had posters stuck to the walls all over the castle, advertising the ball and the fact that everyone must be in period costume for the event.
Severus was pleased because she’d not mentioned cupids and hearts once during the arrangements and for that he was grateful.
The weekend before the ball, Lou Melted to the Maatila and collected every item of period clothing she and the elves could find, reducing it and placing it in trunks which were also reduced so she could bring them back to Hogwarts.
Several of the gowns she kept in a trunk in one of the spare bedrooms. They were beautiful gowns in shades of white, cream, silver and gold. Some with subtle accents of green, red or lilac. These she intended to show to Tonks as possible wedding gowns, as the auror had yet to find anything she liked.
All the clothing was self adjusting, so would automatically fit the person who deigned to wear them and Sunday afternoon was set aside in the Great Hall for the students to look through the garments and select their choice.
With help from Professors Flitwick and McGonagall, the gowns and accessories were hung on display at one side of the hall, while the more masculine items were displayed on the left.
The staff had first choice of garments since Albus insisted they too take part in the charade and the majority of them were quite happy to do so. Though the sight of Hagrid in green tights dressed as Robin Hood was a bit too much for most of them and Madam Pomfrey suggested that maybe he would look better as Sir Lancelot, so as to be in keeping with Albus’ Merlin.
At Lou’s request, cluster of blue elves from the Maatila invaded Hogwarts on the afternoon of the ball itself, to help the students and staff dress appropriately and style their hair in a manner befitting the period of the costume they were wearing.
Most of the staff were in medieval costume, and the ghosts were in their element since they were all several hundred years old and felt more at home than ever seeing so many live witches and wizards dressed in the fashions of their times.
The students were loving every minute of dressing up, some in powdered wigs, some dressed as kings and queens, yet others as peasants or lords and ladies.
The blue elves also copied much of the jewellery from the Maatila to enhance the costumes. Lace handkerchiefs abounded as supposed dandies appeared in the hall flouncing them and trying to appear aristocratic to their friends.
Severus of course, stuck to his usual formal dress robes, since most everything he wore was of the Victorian era anyway.
Lou chose a pale lavender crinoline dress with white and green rosebuds set around the hem. Peg arranged her hair into a mass of ringlets and she wore green pumps and draped a green shawl about her shoulders.
Like Lou, quite a few of the older female students had gone for the crinoline look, Bernie and Stacy included, and it was only when the time came to sit down in the Great Hall that they regretted their decisions.
None were taught the correct way to sit whilst wearing hoops and the sight that greeted the majority of males in the hall was hilarious to say the least as skirt fronts flew into the air and squeals were heard as Lou and many others fought with the yards of material now flung in their faces and over their heads.
Albus and Minerva were forced to transfigure many of the chairs into stools, a task that proved difficult as they were laughing so much. Then more chairs had to have there seats elongated for those who’d opted for bustles and could not fit on the chairs at all.
Still, it made for an enjoyable and totally hilarious evening and even Severus was unable to control his lips as they twitched furiously at some of the sights that assaulted his eyes.
The ball was considered a success and Albus said he’d never enjoyed one so much as this.
Lou assisted Professor Warren in Defence classes quite often. Despite the fact she could better him any time he challenged her, he could not dispute her talents and enjoyed working with her.
This of course caused a certain amount of friction between her and Severus. Regardless of the fact he blatantly denied it was due to jealousy over the extra time she spent with the DADA Professor, Lou knew that was the real reason he insisted she share her time more equally between the various subjects. He also decided he needed more help in the Potions classroom and encroached on her time spent in defence classes as much as possible. He even went so far as to have her take several of the first year classes on her own while he gloated in his private lab, at the same time attempting to improve the wolfesbane potion.
A letter from Hermione in the middle of March gained his attention when she explained that she was also working on the same project, and had discovered that Chamerion angustifolium, commonly known as Rosebay willowherb, a fireweed found growing on recently burned land in North America, if picked as the first buds appeared was friable (easily crumbled) and caused a reaction in the wolfesbane if added in equal amounts along with the aconite, making it akin to a combined sedative/stimulant. The stimulant worked largely on the human blood cells while the sedative aspect of the potion worked on the canis lupis genes. She sent copies of her notes so he could recreate the potion himself and try it on a sample of Remus’ blood to observe the effects. As a result, Lou was left to take all of his first year classes and the second years too, as Severus became more and more engrossed in the wolfesbane.
The added fireweed did in fact have an effect on Remus’ blood, but the result was such that the mans blood would have boiled in his veins as soon as the full moon appeared and he began to transform. Severus was very disappointed with the outcome.
Then something Remus told got him thinking and he once more became excited as he experimented some more.
Apparently when Lou had suggested that Severus, Remus, Kingsley, Arthur and Charlie take some of Severus’ Heal-All after their capture, torture and subsequent release, Remus’ next transformation was different to his previous ones.
He’d changed to werewolf form as always, but where as normally he would begin to transform as soon as the full moon began to rise, the time after he took Severus’ potion his change was slower, more gentle. Unfortunately once he began to turn human again, the pain was excruciating. More so than usual.
This prompted Severus to demand more blood from Lupin so he could blend various ratio’s of the wolfesbane with the heal-All to find out the effects.
Hermione returned to Hogwarts for three weeks, for the wedding and to assist her ex-Potions Master in the project. She took an oath not to reveal any knowledge of the Heal-All itself and they became very excited when several of the potion combinations seemed to be viable with no predictable side effects.
They kept quiet about it however, needing first to test the potions over many months on various creatures provided by a reluctant Hagrid.
Lou dragged Tonks to her and Severus’ rooms and showed her the trunk full of gowns she’d kept aside from the Maatila.
Tonks was enthralled with them, finally settling on a shimmering silver floor length regency gown, with maroon accents around the hem and neckline. The dress incorporated a short train, also in silver with a faint maroon pattern interwoven with the fabric.
Lou lent her a small gold and diamond tiara, interspersed with dark red garnets, matching necklace and a pair of earrings.
“Circe, I feel like a queen Lou. Where did you find these dresses?”
“At the Maatila, my mums house. There were hundreds of outfits and I kept these back for you to look through. Besides, we’re family aren’t we, I mean cousins sort of and I thought maybe you wouldn’t mind if I … “ Lou lowered her gaze. When she’d first realised that she and Tonks were related she was surprised but elated that she actually had a blood relative. However she never brought it up with Tonks before, even at the vaults that day, unsure as to how Tonks would take the revelation.
“You know I never really thought about us being related until now, but you‘re right. Lou they say you can choose your friends, but not your family. Well if I could chose my family, you would be top of the list, believe me.” Tonks said, holding out her arms to Lou.
“Though you’re more like a little sister than a cousin, and you saved my Remus, you’ll never know how much that means to me Lou.”
The two young women embraced tightly, both overjoyed at finally having someone to call family, sisters in blood as well as friends.
