The Grindelwald Legacy
Chapter 87
Severus levitated a chair and small table into the restricted section of the library. He had no intention of carting armloads of heavy tomes back and forth into the main area of the library, only to sit under the ever watchful eyes of Madam Pince.
“Professor Snape, is it really necessary to obstruct the aisles this way?” The librarian asked unsmilingly. “You are completely blocking access to the majority of this area of the library.” The stern witch glowered at him.
“I see no problem with that. Since the students and staff are currently occupied with classes, I am the only one requiring the use of this section. And no, I do not require your assistance, so go about your business Madam and leave me alone.”
Madam Pince sounded a loud “Well, of all the… “ Only to be silenced by the Potion Master’s ‘shh’, scowl, and a finger pointing to the ’KEEP QUIET’ sign on the wall behind her.
She stormed off in a huff of clacking heels, indignant puffs, and very unladylike insults muttered under her breath.
Quite frankly, Severus didn’t give two hoots about the librarians opinion of him, so long as she left him undisturbed to peruse at his leisure.
In fact he found it most refreshing being cloistered from view of Pince’s beady eyes, and the constant not so quiet babbling whispers of students seeking to fit in some last minute studying for exams or overdue homework. Other than the occasional footsteps from the librarian, volumes returning to their shelves, and muted moans and sighs from the section he inhabited, he was left alone to peruse at his leisure.
When he called the librarian a little over an hour later, the thin, vulture like witch was facing him in an instant, causing Severus to wonder if she had been perched high on a bookshelf behind him, ready to pounce at a moments notice.
“Having problems Professor?” She asked, not looking at him, instead scrutinising the many volumes he had spread before him.
“Not at all Madam, the tomes however seem unusually voluble, I was wondering whether there has been some uncommon activity in here recently. Some new additions perhaps, a change in their placements?”
“I can assure you Professor, that any discontent on behalf of the volumes in this section are most likely a protest as to your continuing intrusion. They are not accustomed to the constant presence of humans, it upsets them.”
Severus made no comment on her accusation, since it was entirely feasible she was right. So he did his best to ignore the growing unrest amongst the dark tomes, and continued to hunt down some obscure, elusive publication he preyed existed.
Lucy was in her element. So far as investigating was concerned, she had not even started, but after all her panic, dread, and trepidation, not a single demon, sprite, or even a doxy had appeared to swallow her up. The books didn’t scream, wail, howl, or try and eat her, and she managed to uploaded the whole restricted section in a little under two hours.
The next half hour was spent programming the computer with all the relevant information, including everything that took place between her and Severus, blushing at having to enter the more personal aspect of the legacy, even though she was alone, and ‘personal’ meant most of it as far as Lucy was aware, then using all her willpower to assemble the information, cross-reference with anything available in the latest upload of books, and formulate some kind of conclusion. Hopefully from there she could set about finding some kind of corrective behaviour or a spell that would, with any luck, offer a solution. Or in Lucy’s words. ‘Unmarry them.’
“Twink will you take me to the annexe please, it’s nearly lunch time.”
Twink did. She was relieved to leave the ‘Come and Go’ room. The miss was doing strange things, and using a contraption it should not be possible to use in Hogwarts. Even in the ‘Come and Go’ room.
Stink sent Twink his thoughts that the Snape was in the restricted section of the library, and that the books in there were in a high state of agitation. That something, or someone, was interfering with them somehow and they were powerless to stop it from happening.
Twink in turn gave him her impression of what Lucy was doing, and her mistrust of the unnatural contrivance being used.
While Lucy was in the annexe awaiting lunch, Severus headed for his own rooms, expecting to find Lucy waiting for him, most likely swamped down with books and parchments she would never be able to understand. When he arrived and found her missing however, he turned to Stink. “Where is that damned girl?” He growled.
“She is having Twink take her to other room Sir. You want Stink should take you?”
“No I do not, have Twink bring her to me. I have no intention of running round after the chit.”
“Severus, I ordered lunch and everything. Twink’s bringing it now. How did you get on?” Lucy asked on arrival in the Potion Masters study.
“As regards lunch, and every thing else for as long as we are stuck in this situation, from now on we will reside in my rooms. I do not like being stuck in that poky little room. The elf’s are available to transport us as the situation demands so I see no reason to use the annexe. My rooms are larger and more comfortable and at least my bed is full sized. As for finding anything useful, you have no idea how many books exist in that section of the library. Unless I am extremely lucky, it could take months, years to discover anything. I don’t suppose you have had any luck?”
“Not yet, hopefully later today.”
“Ridiculous. What chance do you have of finding anything beneficial with your limited resources, when I have the whole of the Hogwarts library at my disposal.”
Lucy sighed. “It’s not a contest, I’m just trying to be optimistic that’s all. We‘re in this together, the only thing that matters is finding a solution, surely.”
He harrumphed, but did not argue. It may not be a contest, but her apparent self confidence caused him to feel challenged, as well as giving his self esteem a bit of a clout. He determined to intensify his search this afternoon. It was not acceptable that a mere slip of a girl could find the answers before him.
Lucy felt an odd, bristling sensation from him, something she didn’t understand never having suffered from male ego. So she did her best to ignore it.
Severus meanwhile was wondering what it was she was still hiding from him. Asking her would only put her on guard and get him nowhere. He decided to be patient, perhaps tonight he would practice a bit of legillimancy. Hetty already said the girl had no resistance to it when asleep.
“Where are you conducting your studies?” He asked casually.
“Oh erm, I went straight to the annexe from my dorm room.” She answered, eyes shifting slyly.
He looked at her suspiciously. “Just remember to return here before classes end. Rumour has it you are home with your grandmother, you took sick over the weekend.”
“And what does rumour have you doing?”
“No one questions my whereabouts. At least not if they know what’s good for them. “What resources do you have that might help you discover a means to end this… bind?”
“Not much, mostly what gran let me read from the file. And Arithmancies quite useful, I’ve got my text book handy in case I can equate what’s been happening with me, to what now obviously incorporates you, and err… other things. You know how it is, just fumbling along, hoping something significant will show up.” Lucy knew she was rambling, that nothing she said really made much sense, but no way was she telling him what she was really doing in the hope of finding answers to their predicament.
Severus rolled his eyes,
Stink, back to the library.” He demanded the moment the bell went.
Severus was annoyed to find the table and chair he left stationed for his return, was now back in the main seating area of the library. Throwing his best glare in the direction of Madam Pince, along with an expression that dared her to question his actions, he replaced them in the restricted section and set to searching yet more titles. “At least the blasted books have stopped grumbling.” He mumbled to himself. Pulling down a particularly thick, heavy tome, which included anthologies from various wizards of note, and their theories on hereditary curses and dark bindings, plus another on diverse sexual enchantments. ‘Any other time.’ He thought jadedly.
Hetty Grindelwald gathered together every bit of information she had concerning Lucy’s legacy, placed it all in her oversized handbag, and called for Winky.
“We have quite a journey ahead of us Winky, and I am well below par. Even apparating to Hogwarts would be a chore for me now, I certainly cannot make this journey without you.”
“Winky understands mistress. You holds Winky’s hand and Winky is doing the rest.”
“Oh Gellert.” Hetty sobbed. Looking down on the frail, skeletal frame, and empty, soulless eyes of her only child.
