Chapter 89
Severus slapped her hand away, scowling at her, then passed her a long quill.
“Do not be fooled by it Miss Granger, we do not know yet what effect the potions have had on the creature. I would prefer that you not be my next test subject.”
Gods, I can’t believe I was about to …” Hermione could not finish her sentence, took shook at her own foolishness. She took the proffered quill and proceeded to stroke the pixie with it, the creature in turn almost purring in pleasure, not once attempting to snatch or bite at the feather as would normally happen.
Severus in turn tried it on the pixies who’d taken the revised potion but not the infused meat. They reacted by snatching the quill from his fingers and tearing to shreds with their teeth.
“I just wish there was some way of knowing exactly what they were experiencing when the rigidity and fitting occurred. Pain, numbness, a combination of both. What?”
“Professor can you do legillimens on a pixie?”
Severus stared at her as though she were mad. Then he walked to his bookcase and pulled down and old, dusty tome. “I must confess the thought has never occurred to me.” He said absently as he skimmed through the index and turned to the page he was looking for.
“No, unfortunately it is not possible. One would have to be a pixie to be able to perform legillimens on one, and as you know, pixies can neither speak, nor be trained.”
“Lou’s a legillimens Professor.”
“I am aware of my wife’s abilities Miss Granger.” he said dryly. “Thou I fail to see the conne … she is also a shape shifter. Miss Granger, you are a marvel.”
Hermione was left with an idiotic grin on her face from his complement while Severus hurried onto the grounds to search the skies for Lou.
She’d taken to spending hours at a time with Madam Hooch, racing their brooms and learning how to do loops and feints.
Severus was out of breath by the time he found her, it took a further thirty five minutes before he was able to get their attention, having to resort to taking one of the school brooms and flying up to them.
“I am in need of your services.” Was all he told Lou before landing and stalking back to the castle.
Madam Hooch gave her a wink and a sly look while Lou turned beet red and headed back to the dungeons, intend on giving him a mouthful for giving the flying instructress the wrong idea. At least she assumed it was the wrong idea. If he thought she would … well after the way he demanded … Lou wasn’t sure what to think but was prepared for a showdown by the time she found him in his lab with Hermione.
‘Well that puts sex out of the window.’ She thought as she looked at them both curiously. “What’s wrong?” She asked.
“We need you to shape shift.” Hermione told her excitedly.
“Right.” Lou said warily. “Why?”
“Because we need you to try and perform legillimens on a pixie, failing that, speaking to it and asking specific questions for us.” Severus told her.
Lou looked flabbergasted. “You want me to talk to a pixie?” She asked, a giggle escaping her.
“Well, a werepixie actually.”
Lou turned to Hermione. “You’re serious? Why would I want to talk to a … you have a werepixie?”
“We have several.” Severus told her. “We have found something we believe might be of help to Lupin during his transformation back to human form when he …if he undertakes the cure. We need to know however just what the werepixie is experiencing as the potion takes effect. We are aware of the end result, but the consequences of these results could be devastating to Lupin if we do not know what he will undergo mentally and physically during the brief episode the werepixie goes through before becoming placid. Unfortunately only a pixie can perform legillimens on another pixie, and since none other than another pixie has ever been able to speak …pixie. Oh for heavens sake. Will you do it?” He asked exasperatedly.
Hermione slapped a hand to her mouth, her eyes watering as she tried to hide her mirth at the Potions Master. Lou just all out laughed.
“Yeah I’ll give it a go.” She said. “No promises though, I’ve never done pixie before.”
She looked at the pixies, normal and werepixie, then shifted.
In a flash Severus’ hand shot out and snatched her in mid flight towards on of the cages. “Change back into yourself until I have given you instructions.” He demanded.
Lou had no idea what he was saying so shifted back to herself to ask him why he’d grabbed her like that.
“First; do not presume to just shift and have yourself bitten by a werepixie. Miss Granger has already come too close for comfort in that area. Two; you are only to attempt legillimens or conversation with the specimens we indicate. Three, the list of questions are on the worktop. Four; you first need to see which part of the experiment we are alluding to before you attempt to discover what symptoms the werepixie experienced. Five; you will keep a distance of at least four feet from the subject you are interacting with. Is that clear?”
Lou puffed her cheeks and let out a long breath. “Erm, yeah. Lets see then.”
Hermione passed her the list of questions to study, while Severus prepared another werepixie and removed a small piece of the infused meat from a container.
Lou tried hard to concentrate on the list of questions under her nose, but could not tear her eyes from the transforming pixie. She felt she could almost hear its bones breaking and disjointing as it’s little body re-aligned itself mercilessly. The fact the pixie did not appear to be in any great pain meant nothing to Lou. This was the first time she’d ever seen anything like this and it suddenly began to hit home what Remus must go through at each full moon and was horrified.
“Lou? Lou are you alright?” Hermione asked, laying a hand on her shoulder.
Lou started and turned her head in Hermione’s direction, though her gaze remained on the pixie. “Is … is that what Remus … how he …?”
“Yes. Every month since he was a child.” Hermione said softly. “That is why we are trying to find a way to make the cure less painful, less traumatic than it is at the moment. But without you, we cannot hope to discover what the pixie feels when it becomes a pixie again. That is why it is so important for you to help us Lou.”
Lou’s eyes welled with unshed tears. If she could help by doing this one small thing, she would do her best. Brushing the tears away, she read and re-read the list of questions to ask the pixie should the legillimens fail. She only hoped she could speak pixie if it did.
Once the pixie had stopped fitting, Severus nodded in her direction and Lou shifted once again.
The werepixie watched her curiously, it’s head tilted to one side as she neared the cage. It gave a long crooning sound, followed by a high pitched chitter, it’s scrawny little arms reaching out for her.
“Hi.” Lou said, not knowing whether or not it could understand her. “I can’t come too close I’m afraid. Can you talk?”
The pixie narrowed it’s eyes and looked at her. “Yep. Can talk. All pixies can talk. You not pixie. What you?”
Lou couldn’t help giving a pixie grin. “I’m a person, but I’m a shape shifter. That’s why I’m like this now. They want me to do legillimens on you.”
“What that? Sound bad. Not like.”
“Will you talk to me then. Answer questions for me? My names Lou by the way.”
“Oja.” The pixie said, patting it’s chest. “Why they do things to us? Bad things. Make hurts. Big hurts. Then make better and hurt again. Why?”
“They’re trying to find a cure for werewolves. To stop it happening. Will you help, please? Tell me what it feels like when they give you the two different potions. I know it’s unfair what they’ve done to you and I’m sorry for it, really I am. I know what it’s like having your choices taken away from you, not having control over your life. I’ll ask them to let you go once they’ve finished.”
“Ha. They not let go. They kill. Not care.”
“I care, and I’m sure once they know how much they’re hurting you they’ll change their minds and let you go.”
“Too late. Change Oja. Make vicious Oja.”
“You’re not vicious now. In fact you’re nicer than pixies usually are. Sorry, that didn’t come out right.”
“Oja understand. Pixies not friendly. Not like humans. Like be left alone. Will tell you what you want know. Oja like Lou.”
Lou sat on the edge of the counter and looked at Oja hopefully.
“No drink, change bad. Very hurty. With drink change not hurt. Chang back, more hurty than first change.”
“Right, and what about when they give you the meat?”
“Meat taste funny. Bad meat. Oja hungry so Oja eat. Then feel pop-pop in here.” He pointed at his head. “Not hurt, pop-pop. Then wiggles inside.” he ran his hands up and down his little body, arms and legs. “Wiggle wiggle every all. Then stop. Oja feel good. Nice. Like now. You nice pixie. We mate. Be one.”
Lou blushed as much as a pixie can blush. “I’m sorry Oja, I’m married to the Professor.”
“Pfess. Big hair?”
She giggled. “No, the tall dark one is my husband. That’s Hermione with the big hair.”
“All humans look same. Ugly. Uck!” He exclaimed.
Lou couldn’t help laughing again and she wondered what it sounded like to Severus and Hermione. “Thanks Oja. That’s nice of you to say so.”
“You ugly human. Nice pixie. Oja like.”
“I like you too Oja, but I think I better shift back now and tell them what you told me. Thank you for being so helpful.”
“No. You stay as pixie. Oja like.”
“I’d like to Oja but I can’t. If Severus lets me though I’ll come and talk to you again. Is that okay?”
Oja rolled his eyes and lifted his hands out to the sides with a shrug. Then he winked at her.
Lou was still smiling when she shifted back to herself.
Severus and Hermione looked at her expectantly.
“Well, did you manage to perform the legillimens?” Severus asked.
“I didn’t need to. Oja told me everything you wanted to know.
“Oja?” Hermione asked. “It has a name?”
“Of course it has a name. They’re intelligent thinking beings, and they’re not too happy about being caged up and you two giving them the ’very hurty’. I said I would ask you to let them go if you get your answers. You will wont you?”
“If the answers are what we are hoping for, then yes the uninfected ones will be released.” Severus told her.
Lou whirled to face him. “But you have to let the others go too, they don’t understand why you keep hurting them. You’ve found the cure so cure them and let them go. Please let them go.” She pleaded.
“First relate what it told you.” Severus demanded, refusing to commit himself to any false promises until he had what he needed.
“Well he said when he wasn’t given any potion at all, it hurt changing both ways. When he had the first potion, the first change was okay but the change back was very hurty. More the usual.”
“Very hurty?”
“Yes Severus, very hurty. It’s how they talk. It means very painful.”
“I know what it means.” he growled. “What about when he took the potion laced meat?”
“He said the meat tasted off. When he stiffened he said something went pop-pop in his head, but it didn’t hurt. Just went pop-pop. Then he felt wiggles everywhere inside. No pain, just the wiggly feeling. Then he felt good and nice.”
“Pop-pop, wiggles and nice? What are we expected to do with answers like that?”
“You supposed to realise that the potion works. No pain, just pops and wiggles.”
“Do not be facetious.” He grunted.
“I’m not, that’s how he described it. The main thing is it didn’t hurt him when he ate the meat. But like I said, the meat tastes off so I don’t think the second potion can be very nice.”
“The taste is not a problem providing it does it’s job.” He snapped.
“That’s fine for you to say, you don’t have to eat it. At least try and make it taste nicer, you’d hate it if I gave you rotten meat for your tea. Oh and I promised Oja I’d come and talk to him again before you let him go.” With that she flounced from the lab.
Severus scowled at Hermione, who in turn held her lips in tightly to prevent herself from smiling at the Potions Master being given a dressing down in front of her.
“If you breathe one word of what was said in this room today Miss Granger …”
“I wouldn’t. Never.” She said, her voice a squeak as she held in her mirth.
“Hmm.” Was the only response he made before turning back to his notes and scribbling furiously.
When he and Lou sat down for dinner, she presented him with a large steak, chips and salad. He eyes the steak warily, not trusting her motives. Then he swapped their plates and sat back smirking.
Lou raised an eyebrow and smirked back at him as she started to cut into her steak.
Severus snatched the plate back and swapped them again. He was convinced she’d given him a rotted steak and was calling his bluff as to which one was okay and which was not.
Again she smirked and cut into the other steak. This time he waited until she took a bite, then swapped them again.
Lou still smirked as she cut into the second steak, but Severus didn’t notice as he now cut into the one she’d already taken a bite from.
Lou surreptitiously spat the piece of meat into a napkin while he wasn’t looking and tried not to pull a face. The meat. although fresh and having absolutely nothing wrong with it, would give off the foulest of tastes after about five minutes. She’d taken the flavour from a small collection of Bertie Bott’s Every flavour beans. Earwax flavour to be precise. Lou tucked into the unaffected steak as Severus relished his own. He was halfway through it when the taste suddenly hit him and he roared with fury, through her a murderous glare and rushed to the bathroom. Even after throwing up everything he’d eaten and scrubbing his teeth numerous times the taste would not go.
Lou meanwhile Melted to Tonx and Remus’ house, begging to stay the night so she would live until morning.
Remus was uncertain about what to do and demanded she tell them what happened.
By the time Lou finished telling them what she’d done and why, they were in stitches and more than willing to let her stay on condition she let him take her back the next day, otherwise Severus would be worrying himself sick about her.
Tonx showed Lou to the bedroom then took her on a tour of the house, while Remus sat and pondered on what Lou had told them about the potions.
Severus searched the whole castle for her, even going so far as to bring Albus in on the search.
The Headmaster, after conversing with many portraits was finally able to reveal that Lou had left the castle.
Severus apparated to Prince manor, only to find she was not there. He tried number 12 and even Spinners End. He called Paa and asked if she was at the Maatila but the answer was still negative.
In the end he gave up, knowing that wherever she was hiding, even he found her she would just Melt off somewhere else.
He spent the night wondering where she was as his temper abated, flared up and abated again. He was not worried about her per se, she already proved she could escape any situation now, more he was put out that she’d managed to hoodwink him and escape punishment. It dented his pride and his ego took a nosedive.
He was not faring much better the following morning. Having had only a couple of hours sleep in the chair and waking to find that Lou had not yet returned. He also still had a faint tang of earwax clinging to his taste buds and his breakfast was abandoned when he found it affecting that too.
A knock on his door at tem am that morning had him yanking the door open ready to hex whoever it was that dared to disturb him.
“Lupin. What is it? I am not …”
“I have something of yours Severus. I thought you might like to have it returned.” Remus said with a small grin.
Lou stepped out sheepishly from behind him and looked at Severus.
He was so relieved to see her safe he forgot his anger for the moment and grabbed her, pulling her into his embrace forcefully as though he would never let her go again.
Lou would have hugged him back if it weren’t for the fact her arms were pinned to her sides. Eventually she tried to wriggle away. “I need to breathe Severus.” She mumbled into his chest.
“Wocha Severus.” Tonx piped up as he loosened his hold a little, but not letting go completely.
“Nymphadora.” He acknowledged.
She scowled and Remus cleared his throat to speak before she said something to anger the already peeved Potions Master further. “Severus, would now be a good time to speak with you about the wolfesbane? Lou tells us you have made some headway as regards another potion you have devised to counteract the effects of the transformation back to myself.”
Severus raised his eyebrows and scowled down at Lou. “Has she indeed. I suppose she also told you why she decided to flee our rooms last night.”
“Erm yes, she did.” Remus felt a bit uncomfortable now and ran his fingers through his hair, unsure as to how he should respond.
Severus sighed. “Very well, you may as well come in now you are here.”
Lou relaxed, feeling relieved that Remus had managed to alleviate the tension and went to the kitchen to make tea.
Tonx and Remus explained Lou’s sudden arrival last night and their decision to let her stay since she was scared of Severus’ wrath.
“She’s family after all Severus, we couldn’t turn her away now could we?” Tonx put in.
“No, and I am grateful to you for keeping her safe and returning her. Though it would have been appreciated had you at least let me know last night.”
“Right. And you wouldn’t have come banging down the door demanding to take her back.” Tonx said daringly, a note of warning in her voice.
Remus shot her a black look but she took no notice.
Severus just admit it, she got one over on you and you would have wanted revenge. I’ve known you long enough to know that it wouldn’t have been pleasant.” Tonx argued.
“That is true, though why you think I will not still want revenge now is beyond me.”
“I don’t think anything of the sort, but you’ve had chance to calm down now and you two can sort out your differences more amicably. I hope. Beside, what she did wasn‘t that bad.”
“Really? I still have that damned taste in my mouth now for Merlin’s sake. It is truly disgusting.”
“Well Remus and me, we have to side with Lou, after all, she was only trying to make a point so that when Remus takes the cure he won’t have to eat something that tastes off.”
“That is besides the point. I ha … when he takes the cure? You have decided to go ahead?”
