Rodolphus moved immediately to the fireplace to add wood to the dying fire. As the temperature outside had now fallen to below freezing, the temperature inside Roark's apartment had fallen as well, especially as he tended to keep the heat low and use the fireplace. It had also begun to snow again.
Roark refilled their wine glasses, grabbed his satchel off his desk, and moved to take a seat on the pile of pillows set before the hearth. Rodolphus took a seat across from him, reaching to pick up his wine as Roark pulled files from his satchel, arranging them on the hearthstones.
Seeing his and Rabastan's names on one of the files, he reached out to pull it to him, opening it to see what was inside. "Why, darling, are you compiling a file on me and Rabastan?"
Roark, who had opened one of the files he still needed to go through, looked up to see him leaning, one of the pillows behind his back, against the hearth, the file open before him.
"To destroy it, of course," he answered, frowning down at the file before him, seeing Rabastan's name. Drawing a pad of paper to him, he began to write and once finished, replaced the paper, with no mention at all of Rabastan. He then passed the original to Rodolphus to add to the file in his lap.
"Destroy it? Why would you want --" he broke off as Roark lifted his head to look at him, his brow arching as if to say, 'Yes? You would dare to ask that?' "You know."
"That you and Rabastan are not ONLY our informants but undercover Counter-Intelligence Officers?" He gave a nod. "Yes, we know."
"How? We've been so careful. How did you find out?"
A smile curved his lips. "That you have, and I admit that for a moment some time ago, I entertained the thought you could be, but there were just so many inconsistencies I threw it out. Just as the two of you planned for us to do."
He nodded as he watched him begin to write again. "Then how did you find out?"
"You know, you REALLY should have known we would have known the meaning behind the changes to our weapons belts without the notes you both left us. Idiots, as Severus called the both of you. It took us only a moment to recognize the writing, that it matched those left to us by our informants." He saw the disbelief in his eyes..."So, as I thought, it wasn't intentional then."
"No. No, it wasn't. Our orders were really very simple, very straightforward. Get close to Tom Riddle, and once we were in place, we were to watch, to do whatever small things we could without getting ourselves caught...or killed, to hinder him."
"Which you did?"
Another nod. "We had been told, before they sent us here, that we would know when the time had come to start sharing what information we had gathered so that when Kale and Dominic arrived on Aquaria with Logan, Fili, and Kili, we sent him a brief, coded message to meet with us. In the first meeting we had with him and Dominic, we told them what our orders were, then what our own objectives had become since rising so high up in Riddle's Organization. We gave them what information we had gathered up to that point, then we set up a timetable for future meetings to take place in undisclosed locations."
"Why didn't you tell any of the others? Why just Kale and Dominic?"
A shrug. "They decided it wasn't necessary for anyone else to know. It wasn't until Dom was murdered that a plan was put into place that should anything happen to Kale, a replacement would be sent."
"Then Harry and I arrived here with Severus."
"Yes. Severus contacted us right away, and when we met with him, we were told there was to be a change in how things were going to be done. Our orders would now come from him and that he was to be our contact instead of the team lead. Basic orders were the same. Hinder Riddle any way we could and not get caught, but then he set us on you...and the rest, as they say, is history."
"I see. Then you were Counter-Intelligence before you were sent here."
"We were. Though it hadn't been for very long. Bas and I attended the Academy just as you did. I was...twenty-three, Bas twenty when Roark and Thorin approached us with this job. We were given training for a yahren {year} to be undercover agents, then when it was deemed we were ready, we were sent in."
"They sent you here just as Riddle was beginning to get organized...to make true waves with his businesses as he had managed to get away with murdering my parents, almost killing me and Harry. You were already deeply undercover when that platinum mine robbery happened."
"The unfortunate thing about the murder of Commander James Peverell Potter and his wife Lily was that there just wasn't enough evidence found against him, and what little they did have was all circumstantial, and you and Harry were far too young, especially you, to give them any kind of solid information on what happened that night."
He nodded. "I was just barely fifteen sectars {months} old, and Harry had just turned four yahren. Harry never had any real memory of that night, except of a man in a dark cloak."
"As for the rest...yes, that mine robbery was one of Riddle's schemes. He wanted to get his hands on as much platinum as he could to sell to the highest bidder. We were already a part of his inner circle by then, as well as his top two Terminators. That robbery cemented our places with him. Really, it all began with the man who had become our guardian after our parents died."
"Your guardian? Those whip marks on your back?"
Rodolphus nodded. "Our parents were killed in a Cylon raid on Aquaria when I was eight, and Rabastan four. As far as we knew, we were the last of the Lestrange line, and with no family to be sent to, we ended up on the streets to become fair game to anyone who could claim us." Rodolphus turned to look into the fire, thinking back. "The man who thought we may be worth his time was named Zion."
"Tell me, Dolph? What happened to you? To both of you."
Rodolphus turned his head to look at him. "Tom Riddle," he began slowly, "was young then, seventeen or eighteen yahren {year}, just getting started, and Zion was one of his first Terminators. Riddle was very small time then, but he had big plans, and he was powerful even then, getting into things that never should have been touched magically."
"I spoke to Headmaster Dumbledore not too long ago. He said he taught Tom Riddle. He said he was very enigmatic and had a small group of followers, one of whom was, I believe your father, Corvus Lestrange. There was Abraxes Malfoy, Admiral Lucius Malfoy's father. Said that even then, his magic was very strong and very tightly controlled. He also said his magic was dark, that he tended to get into things he never should have touched."
"Yes. Black magic, or, more commonly known as blood magic. HE was from the ancient Kobolian line of Gaunt, so even then, he had plenty of money to work with and could afford to pay a couple of Terminators to protect him and whatever fledging business he sat up. It's a good thing, really, that Zion never introduced us to Tom Riddle or this never would have worked. That man has a memory you wouldn't believe."
Roark nodded, silver eyes on his lover's face, watching the plays of emotion. "So Zion pulled you and Rabastan off the streets?"
