To say that Harry was clueless could be considered the understatement of the century. The signs had definitely been there, had he bothered to pick up on them. From Glenn sending him the owl when he was upset in Diagon Alley a week ago, on precisely the day that Harry had seen Draco Malfoy there, to the strands of silky blonde hair Hedwig came back from Glenn's with, they all pointed in one very definite direction. But denial is a very powerful thought process. And Harry was buried knee deep in it.
It wasn't that Harry was actually denying that Glenn could be Malfoy. He just couldn't allow himself to entertain the thought that it could be. It was simply a coincidence that Malfoy had been in Diagon Alley both times that Glenn had claimed to have been there. Besides, Malfoy wasn't the only blonde in existence in the world, that hair could belong to anybody. And Hedwig could have found that hair almost anywhere. Harry simply stared at the blonde hairs in his hand and breathed a sigh of relief.
Yes, the hair could belong to just about anybody. Anyone other than Malfoy, that is.
Harry decided he would not allow himself the luxury of thinking that Glenn could be Malfoy. He knew full well how much Malfoy despised him, and Glenn was the antithesis of that. And if Malfoy was indeed Glenn, then the summer would more than likely end up being one huge Slytherin joke at his expense. He shuddered to think of it.
Draco paced restlessly back and forth in his room at The Leaky Cauldron, wondering why Harry's owl had pulled his hair out before she departed. Shit! That damn, infernal owl is going to blow my cover! It really wasn't that he wanted his identity to remain a secret forever. He just enjoyed having complete control of absolutely every aspect of his life, and he knew that it just wasn't the right time to let this particular secret be known.
There was also the fact that Harry had definitely been looking at him with interest during their 'chance' meetings in Diagon Alley. It gave him a bit of a thrill to know that he had a certain effect on the raven haired wizard, but it also presented problems in regard to 'Glenn'. He was beginning to have doubts about the method he had used to allow Harry to get to know him. Granted, the plan had worked and it appeared that Harry was falling hard for 'Glenn,' but it also had the potential to backfire on a gigantic scale, and Draco was not prepared for any conceivable backlash that might result from it. Maybe I didn't think this plan through well enough, after all.. he thought.
A week before classes were to resume, an owl that wasn't Psyche or Hedwig arrived at room eleven in The Leaky Cauldron, with a letter addressed to Draco Malfoy. Who on earth would be sending me a letter here? he thought to himself.
Although that particular question remained unanswered, the letter he held in now shaking hands left him feeling like he'd been hit in his midsection by a speeding bludger.
Dear "Glenn",
Or should I say Malfoy? Oh yes, Draco, I know who you are, and I know what you're up to. Did you think that no one would figure your little scheme out? Really, you underestimate people.
I'm sure that your fellow "Dungeon Dwellers" would be quite interested to know what's been keeping you so busy this summer. Can you imagine the looks on their faces if they were to find out that you had spent a good majority of it writing love letters to Harry Potter? Do you think that they would welcome you with open arms if they were to discover your secret feelings for your archenemy? Who, by the way, happens to be another boy, and a Gryffindor no less? Really, Malfoy, what are you thinking?
How about your father, Malfoy? What do you think he would have to say if he were to find out about this betrayal? Because it is a betrayal, Malfoy. The object of your affections is the man (oh, what would he think of that fact, I wonder?) who is destined to bring down your fathers Master. Do you think he could forgive you for a betrayal as huge as this? I highly doubt it.
But none of the others need ever find out about your little "indiscretion" this summer. As long as you give me what I want, I am willing to keep my mouth shut and your reputation as a first class pureblood prat will remain intact with your family and friends.
And what is it I want, Malfoy? It's quite simple, really. I want you to cease all contact with Harry Potter. No more letters, gifts, or anything else of that nature. Do not talk to him, look at him or even be in the same space that he occupies. Abide by these rules, and I will say nothing about what I know. The moment I learn otherwise, (and do not doubt that I will find out) your secret will no longer be safe, and the same could be said about yourself and your reputation at Hogwarts. Not to mention your standing and safety with the Dark Lord and his followers.
Do not attempt to figure out who I am, or do anything that I can perceive as trying to find me. It will only make the situation worse. I've taken a page out of your book and charmed the quill so that my handwriting will not be revealed, so don't bother trying to guess using that method. I'm deadly serious here, Malfoy. If you value your reputation you will heed my warning and stay far away from Harry Potter.
Sincerely,
A Lusty Offer, My Own
P.S. The anagram was very clever, but obviously not clever enough. Even I figured it out.
