    The Way Back Home
    Chapter 9: Dumbledore’s Office

Severus led Zeporiap through the hallways, having decided against taking the floo to Dumbledore’s office. While it would have gotten them there faster, he felt the need to walk out the tension curling in his body. So, he grasped Zeporiap’s hand, lacing his fingers in hers, and walked to their destination.

Coming to the gargoyle, Severus shook his head in disgust as he spoke the password. “Skittles” he muttered. Thrgoyrgoyle leaped aside allowing them to step onto the rotating staircase. Reaching the top, he led Zeporiap to the tall solid oak door. It opened immediately.

“Severus and Zeporiap, please take a seat.” Dumbledore said gesturing them to the comfy chairs placed before his desk. Severus sighed in irritation.

“Sir, what is it that you have to tell us?” He asked, annoyance lacing his voice.

Albus sighed. “I asked you to come because there are some things about you and Zepo tha that you need to know.”

“What do you mean, Albus?” Zeporiap asked worriedly. She was thinking that he was going to ask her to leave.

Albus noticed right away that the young woman was starting to feel afraid. He smiled gently at her. “Now, my dear. I am not going to ask you to leave—if anything I hope that you decide to stay after what I’m going to tell you.” She calmed down just a little bit, relaxing slightly back into her chair.

Albus signaled for a tray of tea to be brought around. He turned back to the Zeporiap with a serious look in his eyes. He let out a breath, then continued. “Zeporiap, when you were born, your grandmother contacted me to ask if I could give you help when the time was right. Right after your parents were killed, your grandmother contacted me again saying that she had a vision of you as a young woman releasing a great force of magic into the world. She didn’t quite understand what she Saw, only understanding that what was going to happen was of great importance. After much consideration and research, I confirmed with her that you were the one of the keys to a prophecy that I had learned of in my youth—something that I’ve long since forgotten until I was contacted.”

Zeporiap gasped. “You mean that my abuelita knew what was going to happen to me in the future?” She shook her head. “Why didn’t she tell me? I could have done something to avoid what happened to me!” Severus reached over and grabbed her hand. Zeporiap turned her eyes to him, anger glinting in them.

“Miss Luz, what your grandmother saw was something that could not be avoided. Things that are foreseen in the magical world, whether it occurs within it or without it, can not be changed.” Albus sighed wearily. “When your grandmother told me of what she saw, I told her to do all that she could to protect you when the prophecy began to take effect. That is why she gave you the necklace when you were five years old. She wanted to make sure that you would remember the words to activate the portkey necklace at an early age. You’re coming here only fulfilled a part of the prophecy.”

Severus narrowed his eyes. He did not like where this conversation was going—however, at the same time, he was wondering what this had to do with him. It was most frustrating. He panted out a breath as he turned to the older man. “Albus what does this all have to do with me?” He had a funny feeling that he was not going to like the answer.

“This is where you come in, Severus. You are part of the prophecy as well. When you first met Miss Luz, did you feel some kind of connection with her? Yes? Well, at the time before she came, you may not have understood why you felt that way. The day that she arrived, you had an extreme outburst of anger at what had happened to her. If you remember, you said that the feelings just over took you. When you looked at me your eyes were glowing, much the same way that your eyes glowed when I found you in the hallway with Zeporiap after Misters Malfoy and Zabini attacked her. Do you understand where I am going with this?”

Severus shook his head to the negative. “I’m not really following what you’re saying. Zeporiap and I only came to the conclusion that her eyes changed due to an intense emotional upheaval.” Albus nodded.

“Yes, that is good that you came to that conclusion. You see, sometimes a person’s magical ability can be reflected in their eyes. It means that there is a latent magical ability that has yet to be acknowledged. This usually occurs when the witch or wizard is experiencing a life-threatening danger like what you experience Miss Luz. Other times, this latent magical ability reveals itself when the witch or wizard sees their soul mate in danger.”

Severus’s eyes widened at the last bit. Is that why he was so drawn to the beautiful woman sitting next to him? Is it why he was so angry when he saw what almost happened to her in the walkway a week ago? It answered all of his questions—the strange attiontion, the strong desire for her, the anger when he discovered what had happened to her, the instant calm he felt when he was in her presence. It all made sense: she was his soul mate. And for once he did not mind that life was manipulating him again—he didn’t care and almost welcomed it. He blinked when Zeporiap squeezed his hand. He didn’t even realize that he was still holding her hand.

“Severus?” Zeporiap questioned with concerned eyes. “Are you alright?” He squeezed her hand again, nodding. He let out another breath.

“Yes, I am fine.” He said. “I was just gathering my thoughts for a moment.” He turned to the Headmaster again. “If we both have this magical ability, why didn’t we know that it was there? Wouldn’t we at least have felt that something was off within ourselves?”

Albus smiled slightly. “Severus, your latent magical ability was always there. It was there when you first came to Hogwart’s. It hung about you like a fog. You never noticed it until now because it became hidden under the dark magic that was also apart of you. For Miss Luz it was different. She was raised in the muggle world and didn’t really notice that something about her was different. Isn’t that right my dear?”

Zeporiap nodded. “Yes, I grew up with my abuelita and I always felt that I was different, but I couldn’t understand what it was. I thought that it was just because I didn’t look the same as the other kids around me and left it at that. It never occurred to me that I had this inside me.” She sighed, shaking her head.

The tea trolley appeared and began to prepare three cups of tea. Albus took ond pnd placed it on his desk. Zeporiap took one and handed it to Severus then took one for herself. Albus took a sip of the warm brew, feeling much better as it slid its way down his parched throat. “Now, I want to get to the part about your latent magical abilities. Severus, your latent abilities focuses more on the darker side of magic which is only natural since you possess a great deal of it. It is connected with all things dark: the night, the moon, shadows, and death. It is part of the reason why you were drawn to the dark arts as a young man. Miss Luz, your latent abilities focus more on the lighter side of magic. This is a reflection of your calm personality and demeanor: it’s why your friends often saw you as the mother-hen type that they could talk to. Your magic is connected to things like: the sun, the day, light-heartedness, and life. When your magical abilities are separate each has its own destructive powers. But, without the other there would be chaos. That is why you two are soul mates—you each serve as a balance for the other making sure that the other does not go too far. That is why, Severus, you were out of control as a youth; Zeporiap was not there to give you a balance. When she was born, you calmed down and had a sense of control over yourself.”

Zeporiap was slowly taking this all in. It was a little bit overwhelming, but she understood and felt that it was right. It was the answer to some of the questions that she had held for a long time about herself. Now, she was finally coming to understand why. She set her tea cup down on the edge of the desk. It disappeared with a pop.

“Señor, I still do not understand why those men came and attacked me.” She shivered a little, still trying to overcome the terrible incident. “Why did they come after me like that? Was it because of this magic that is inside me?”

“Yes, that is exactly why they came after you Miss Luz.” Albus set his tea cup down as well, but it refilled itself. “There is an evil man named Voldemort who wants to take over the magical world. He has been terrorizing this world for years trying to achieve his goals. He killed many people, anyone who got in his way, stopping at nothing to get what he wanted. That was his plan until he met Harry Potter.” Zepp gap gasped. “He came to kill Harry as a child, but he could not do so. Even as a child, Harry’s magic was able to stop the Dark Lord—as a result he died. However, he came back in Harry’s fourth year when he received some of his blood. Now, he has been considerably weakened and he needs your magical abilities to defeat Harry and myself so that he can gain what he wants. The only thing is that he does not know of Severus’s latent magical abilities. He does not realize that his latent magic is hidden under his dark magic and has no way of ever knowing.”

Severus was amazed. He was sure that the Dark Lord would have known by the way that he was always digging into his mind to see whether he was being loyal to him or not. But, why wouldn’t he have known? he pondered. Every time that I go to him, he looks me over and picks around in my mind to find something. He came out of his thoughts when there was a knock at the door of the office. He turned to see who it was, then frowned when he saw the Potter boy standing there.

Harry had just been going up the stairs to his room when Hedwig landed on his shoulder. She nipped affectionately at his ear, and then hopped down to his bed when he entered his room. He wasn’t the Head Boy, but he requested a separate room because he didn’t want to disturb the others when he slept through another bad dream. He sat down and ran his fingers through Hedwig’s snowy feathers, thinking about the strange events at the Three Broomsticks. It was definitely something that he’d never seen before.

He sighed, and then frowned as he thought about his friend’s eyes as she came out of the girl’s room. Her eyes were glowing strangely, much the same way on the day that she arrived. The air around her was practically charged with magic; similar to what he felt when he put his hands on the sword of Godric Gryffindor. The same kind of feeling he had when he first received his wand. It was strange, yet very familiar.

“Hoot.” Harry was startled out of his reverie by Hedwig. He looked down apologetically. “Oh, I’m sorry girl. I was just thinking.” She held out her leg daintily. Smiling, Harry untied the small note that she presented to him.

    It was from the Headmaster!

    Mr. Potter,

Please come to my office as soon as Hedwig brings you this note. Come as quickly and as discreetly as you can. It is very important.

    Headmaster Dumbledore

Harry set the letter down, frowning a bit. He wondered what it was about, but didn’t have much time to ponder over it. He quickly reached over to the table and got out some owl treats for Hedwig. She nipped his finger affectionately in thanks and hopped onto the table to eat her snack.

“You can rest here, girl.” He said ruffling her feathers again. “I’ll take you up to the owlery when I return, okay?”

“Hoot.” She said as she hopped onto the bed and nestled down in the warm sheets.

Harry slipped his Invisibility Cloak around himself. Before he had come upstairs, he had told everyone that he was going to take a nap. He didn’t want them to know where he was going, deciding that this was something that he would keep to himself until it was the right time to reveal it. Swiftly making his way downstairs, he walked past the gang, and headed out of the portrait hole when it opened to let a few other students out. Reaching the gargoyle in record time, he whispered the password and quickly stepped onto the moving staircase. The solid oak door opened when he lifted his hand to knock.

He removed his cloak and stared at Snape, Zeporiap, and the Headmaster. He looked at them with questioning eyes, his emerald orbs sparkling behind his glasses. He stepped forward, ignoring the frown that Snape bent his way. “Sir, is something wrong? Are you alright?”

“Please have a seat Mr. Potter.” Dumbledore said, gesturing to a chair that appeared on the left of Zeporiap. He sat down. “Now, I wanted you to be here specifically for this because you have something in common with Zeporiap and Professor Snape. As you may have noticed, there is something very different about Miss Luz. In particular, I am talking about her eyes. I’m sure you saw her eyes today at the Three Broomsticks.” Harry nodded solemnly. “That glow that you saw in Miss Luz’s eyes is a relfection of her latent magical ability. If you can remember, in the hallway when you came to get me last week, Professor Snape’s eyes were also glowing. He also has a latent magical ability. Now, you might think this a bit strange and wonder what this has to do with you, but it has a lot to do with you. When I revealed the prophecy to you two years ago, I left another part out. However, that was only because I discovered it again later. This concerns on how you will defeat the Dark Lord.”

Harry leaned forward in his seat. He was amazed that there was another part of the prophecy—he had long since gotten over his anger over what Dumbledore revealed to him that day—and he wanted to know everything about it. He paid attention as the older man spoke again.

“This part of the prophecy details very specifically on how the Dark Lord will be defeated.” He pulled out a piece of parchment from a drawer in his desk. He quickly read through the prophecy that he had heard before and then came to a new part.

“The Great Snake seeks the silver
But does not know of the black.

When silver and black build a wall
The power within will cause his fall.”

Dumbledore set the parchment down. He looked around the room, noticing each person pondering over what he had just read aloud. There was a multitude of emotions washing across their faces: confusion, thoughtfulness, wonder, fear, and… relief.

Harry came out of his thoughts first and then looked at the other two. He smiled slightly at Zeporiap, which she returned after a short moment, then looked at Snape, who nodded solemnly.

Dumbledore smiled inwardly at the silent agreement between the three.

Zeporiap spoke up first. “Señor, does this prophecy mean that all of us have to face the Dark Lord?” Dumbledore nodded.

“Yes, it does. This prophecy is referencing to you, the silver; Severus, the black; and Harry, the power within. What this means is that you and Severus will form a shield with your magic around Harry as he fights against the Dark Lord.”

Severus had been silent for most of the time. He understood what must be done and could easily keep this from Voldemort when he was summoned. What he wanted to know was how this would all be set up. He sighed to himself. Then, he looked over at Zeporiap. He didn’t want her to be involved in this any more than she had to be. He had the strange feeling in his stomach, that he wouldn’t be the same if she was taken from him. She looked at him and smiled shyly. She was his soul mate. He didn’t want to lose that—he didn’t want to lose her after he had just found her. It would be too much. He gifted a small smile to her, completely coming out of his brooding.

“How will we be able to set this up, sir?” Severus asked. “Will there be a place for us to work this out? I don’t think that one of the old classrooms will do for this.”

yes.yes. I was just coming to that.” Dumbledore smiled. “There is a room in one of the towers that will be perfect for this. It is similar to the Room of Requirement, but itnot not well known. It was an observatory belonging to the founder of Ravenclaw, which also served as her personal owlery. I will send the directions to get there by owl with tomorrow’s post. With the space provided, you can strategize a plan of action that will suit you. Now, do any of you have any questions?"

Harry looked at Snape and Zeporiap. Seeing that they had no questions at the moment, he spoke out again. “Professor, is it okay if I have some help with this? We’ll need all the help we can get if we’re going to do this.”

Dumbledore nodded, but added cautiously: “You may, but I don’t want you to tell too many people of this. The walls of this castle have ears you know.” Harry nodded.

“Alright sir, I would like to ask Ron and Hermoine to help because they are brilliant with this kind of thing. Ron’s pretty good at strategy tatics and Hermoine can devise a spell that I can use to cast on Voldemort.”

Severus rolled his eyes at the idea of the Weasel and the Know-it-all in his business, but agreed. As long as they could get all the help they could get, he didn’t care. As long as Zeporiap didn’t have to get hurt was all that really mattered.

Finally, Dumbledore called the little impromptu meeting to a close. It was already past curfew and Harry’s eyes were beginning to drop. Zeporiap was also stifling a little yawn, while Severus and Dumbledore fought back their own ideas of sleep—it was a losing battle.

“Alright, children. I will send you the directions to the tower with the morning post.” He stood and ushered them to the office door. “Sleep well.” He closed the office door.

Albus smiled as he headed off to bed, glad that things had blown over well. Fawkes sang out a beautiful note as he got into his bed, causing the elder man to smile again.

“I think things will be looking up for us all, my friend.” Fawkes sang beautifully in agreement.

Downstairs, the small trio headed off, each thinking about what they had just learned.

As he stepped into the common room, Harry saw his friends waiting for him. He sighed and removed his cloak. Ginny instantly rushed up to hug him. He kissed her softly on the lips, then walked with her to the couch. He sat down and pulled her onto his lap. Ron and Hermoine joined the couple, sitting on the opposite end of the couch in a similar fashion.

Ron spoke up first. “So, where were you mate? Are you alright?” He was concerned. “What about Zeporiap, is she okay?”

Harry sighed. He motioned for them to be quiet, looking around to see if anybody was in the room. Luckily, no one was.

He leaned forward and began his tale.

Several floors down, Zeporiap sat down on the couch in Severus’s sitting room. She watched while he summoned some food from the kitchens, looking on as he moved about the room. Finally he sat down on the couch next to her, turning to her as the food appeared on the table before them.

He let out a breath. “Zeporiap, there are some things that I need to tell you about myself. I have done some things in my past that were not so nice, mayhap even bordering on the lines of evil. You may not want to be around me after I tell you what I’m about to tell you.”

Zeporiap shook her head. “Severus, I’ve already felt that there was something about you. I know that there is something about you that you keep to yourself. I heard what Señor Dumbledore said, you lost control when you were younger.” She took hold of his hand, lacing her fingers through his. “At some point, everybody loses control, whether it is good or bad, but it happens. What ever you did, I do not think that your loss of control is as different from anyone else.”

Severus sighed, shaking his head. He was amazed at this woman. She was willing to accept him—and that was before he told her just how much control he had lost when he was younger—and not run away in fear.

“Alright, I will tell you. But, I can only hope that you will still accept me afterwards.”

He looked into her eyes, black connecting with silver, and began his tale.
