The mission
The next night Thea carefully snuck quietly from her dorm. She knew that the others wouldn't awaken, as often Thea would wander around the school late at night. Her sleeping patterns were often erratic, and she had spent many nights investigating the grounds of Hogwarts and reading advanced books in the library.
Tonight Thea headed for a small room near the back of the school. She wore only a thin black top and black trousers. Robes would be too bulky tonight, she needed to be stealthy. As she walked she felt a hand trail down her back and over her right buttock
'Peeves.' She hissed. 'Cut it out, or I will make you regret that.'
A giggle sounded behind her and then she felt something akin to a breeze ruffle her hair, and she knew the poltergeist had gone.
Reaching her destination, she pulled out her wand and unlocked the door. Placing her wand carefully into her deep trouser pocket, she slipped into the room. Once inside she opened the small window, then stood back and closed her eyes.
She breathed deeply, feeling the night wind blowing onto her face, ruffling her hair which she had worn loose tonight. She became acutely aware of the sensation of her wand in her pocket emanating its power. And then she pushed gently with her mind and her shape changed.
Thea had been an unregistered animagus for some time. Her father was famous for his transfiguration powers and from a young age Thea had been training to become a proficient animagus. Her father could change into a number of different animals, a rare talent, but so far Thea could only successfully manage one. Her father however was insanely pleased, as it happened to be the first animal he had transfigured himself into. He had acted as if his genes alone had made Thea such a good animagus. As always Thea didn't argue with him. No one could argue with that level of arrogance.
Once changed Thea flapped her wings, and flew out the window shaped as a tiny black bat. It wasn't the most beautiful of creatures but it had its advantages. Bats were small and relatively inconspicuous. When they flew through the air they went largely unnoticed, their travel is silent, and radar is far superior to mere night vision.
Thea circled the school, relishing the feel of cold against her thin wings and the fur of her body. Finally she detected what she was looking for and swooped down to the potions window. She hung briefly form the upper ledge, her radar sending her clear mental pictures that the room was empty of life. With a quick beat of her little wings, she flew into the room landing on the floor. She had purposefully left the window ajar the last time she had been in here. Small enough not to be noticed, but big enough for Thea in bat form to enter.
Breathing steadily Thea changed back to her human shape. She took the change a little quickly in her nervousness, and had to reach out a hand to steady herself as she swayed on her feet. Breathing deeply and carefully Thea waited for her heart to stop pounding and her mind to centre itself, she would need all her concentration to do this right.
Finally she stepped forwards before crouching down at the base of the right wall. She tapped her wand gently along the bottom of the wall, searching with her magic for that little catch which would tell her where the compartment was. She found nothing, but was not deterred.
Reaching up onto the balls of her feet, she did the same thing but this time across the top of the wall. Her wand found the compartment and smiling in grim satisfaction Thea began searching out the wards. She found them, but it took a long time. Even longer for her to disable and confuse them so that she could open the compartment without detection. By the time she had finished sweat was pouring down her forehead. The magic used was an intricate mixture of light and dark, and it had taken a lot out of Thea. But now more determined than ever, and so close to her goal, Thea continued.
She opened the compartment with a brief murmured incantation, and magically copied the papers inside. They were indeed the intended papers which Thea had carefully checked for further traps; their appeared to be none.
Carefully placing the magical copies into her other pocket, Thea took a deep breath to centre herself before closing the compartment and resetting the wards.
So exhausted was she after this that it took her a while before she was strong enough to transfigure herself successfully. Finally she flew out of the window, pausing to nudge it shut with her little body. She had to fly into the wooden window frame to get the job done, careful not to touch the glass and leave an imprint. Feeling dazed, her body aching, Thea flew back to the hidden room. Once there she quickly changed back to her human form, locked the window, and hurried from the dorm, careful to lock the door as she exited.
Checking the coast was clear, she stealthily headed down the hallway feeling a faint sense of vicious satisfaction and a flash of guilt and sadness.
Rushing down the stairs she kept her hand on her wand as she carefully navigated around the Hogwart's corridors until she was outside, then she turned towards the Forbidden Forest. She felt the vibration of dark magic throb through her, and her hand closed warily around her wand. She would not transfigure herself, as that was a secret she intended to keep, especially from Malfoy. She only hoped that her father had never thought to bring it up.
Reluctantly she stepped into the trees of the forbidden forest. The small hairs at the back of her neck instantly stood on end, but Thea kept her pace even and calm. Even when the bushes to the right of her began rustling Thea merely kept her head up and her pace even, though she swallowed hard.
Finally she came to a clearing within which Malfoy stood. Thea stopped in her tracks and frowned. Something was different about him. What could it be?
His hair was the same length, but it seemed whiter in the weak moonlight. He even seemed taller and his posture was more regal. Thea frowned, but that frown was replaced by a look of shock as the man she thought was Draco turned round.
Well, it is a Malfoy, she thought trying to keep her eyes from betraying her shock. Just not the one I was expecting.
Thea swallowed and then walked calmly forward.
'Mr.Malfoy, it is a pleasure to meet you. I have heard much about you.'
Lucius Malfoy smiled down at her, stepping uncomfortably close as he replied,
'And I about you, Miss.Carter. My son is quite taken with you.'
Thea suppressed a sneer and merely nodded her head abasively.
'I have what was demanded of me.' She took the magical copies from her pocket and handed them into Malfoy's out stretched hand.
'Good.' He said as he glanced at them quickly before pocketing them.
He curled his fingers around her wrist.
'I must say.' He murmured his face close to hers.
'You look quite becoming without your robes.'
Thea didn't miss the innuendo. Dear Lord, she thought angrily. Are all the Malfoys so over-sexed and obvious? By the arrogant look in Lucius' eyes, she was thinking 'yes'.
His other hand rose up to touch her face. He trailed a finger from her temple, down her cheek and across her lips. The skin was sensitive there and she felt herself start slightly. Malfoy let out a deep chuckle.
'You really are quite a remarkable young woman. I've heard such good things about your skills. And physically,' He paused, bending his lips down to brush against her forehead.
'Physically you are most pleasing. So natural, so in control. I wonder what is hidden behind those calm eyes of yours.'
He stepped very close to her, and for a moment Thea thought he was going to pull her roughly to him. But then he let her go, and stepped back.
'You have completed your task.' His voice was suddenly formal, but his eyes still shone with vicious amusement.
'Tomorrow you will travel with Draco to the Malfoy Estate.'
Something must have flashed in Thea's eyes because Malfoy spoke in an icy voice.
'I insist. From there you will be taken to Lord Voldemort.'
Lucius began to turn away, then paused.
'Do not worry, Thea.' His voice had dropped to a low purr.
'I promise you will enjoy your stay with us.'
And then he left. She watched the forest swallow him up, before turning and heading back to her dorm, her mind troubled.
