Unexpected Obsessions
Chapter 9: October 31st, 1981
"I'm so sorry Hermione. He hung his head, and was relieved when she pulled him close for a brief kiss. The entire hall erupted into a loud cheer of applause for their professors. Albus toasted them along with the rest of the faculty. Severus had never been happier in his life. Minerva was wiping tears out of her eyes, and Remus gave him a pat on the back. This by far surpassed the moment when she said she'd marry him.
He never dreamed he'd have a family, never imagined it would be with a woman so perfect as Hermione. He could barely contain his excitement. It was the first time he'd ever smiled around his students, or most of the faculty for that matter. He was beaming, if that was possible. He quickly ate his dinner, and when she had finished his helping of chocolate pie, they quietly excused themselves through the back entrance to the dungeons. Once outside, he grabbed her in a hug, and swung her around telling her he loved her so much.
"I can't describe what I'm feeling right now Hermione. I couldn't begin to try. I have never been more happier. And I am so glad that my happiness is all because of you." He crushed her lips in a heated kiss, letting her feel just how excited he was. He placed her down, and they made their long walk to the dungeons hand in hand.
"Tell me Hermione, how far along are you?"
"Well, Poppy seems to think it was conceived around the beginning of July. So that would make me a little over three months pregnant. She said it should be born around April 1st."
"I'm so happy for us." They had reached the doors to their quarters, and he let them in. She laid down on the couch, her robes spilling around her. "I thought we were careful, not that I care. I just thought you took a potion. That's all. And didn't you have any idea that you may be pregnant? I'm no genius when it comes to female anatomy, but didn't you suspect something?"
"I did take a potion, but it seems the apothecary sold me expired ingredients. I had no idea I wasn't making a fully effective potion. It wasn't something I had done time and time again. Until you, there really was no need for it. And, no I wasn't suspecting anything until I began feeling tired all the time. I had a very mild period in July and August though. Poppy said it's not uncommon to have one or two light periods when you're pregnant."
"Hmm. And what about the few drinks you had over your birthday, and at Harry's party?"
"I'm fine Severus. A few glasses of alcohol haven't hurt me any. The only thing, Poppy says is it's going to be a big baby. It's a little bigger than one should be at three months."
"Well, I myself weighed nearly 9 lbs. when I was born. And my sister weighed almost 10 lbs. Big babies are not uncommon in my family."
"Well I have no desire to push out a 10 lb. baby." He sat down beside her on the floor, placing a hand on her stomach.
"I pray you don't. I witnessed Julia's birth, and it wasn't exactly pretty. But I am sure you'll do fine." He rubbed his hand in a circle around her tummy, and she placed her hand onto his. He hated to tell her he had to leave for a few days, but he had to go. There was no way around it. "There wasn't any complications with your appendicitis was there?"
"Actually, Poppy knew then, but she didn't want to tell me. She wanted me to wait until I was suspicious enough to see her and question her about it."
"Yes, she does like withholding precious information about one's future. She's almost as bad as Albus."
"Well, anyway, I explained to her I have been really tired lately, and that I am really emotional. At first she thought it was from Ron's death, but after she ran a few tests, she confirmed I was pregnant. I am so happy. I never dreamed we'd have a family so soon. And we're not even married yet." She smiled again, and it warmed his heart. He'd never grow tired of her smile.
"No we aren't, are we? We'll have to change that?" He raised an eyebrow at her, and she wondered what he was thinking.
"Hermione what would you say about getting married over the Christmas Hols? Then, we'll have a bit of a honeymoon so we won't have to schedule it around school. We could do it here, or at my manor. Whichever you choose will be fine."
"Hm. We could do it on December 24th, then we'll still have until January 2nd to celebrate. I'd like to do it here, with Albus officiating if that's possible."
"The man can do anything he pleases. We'll just have to get a marriage contract from the Ministry and list a few things. It shouldn't take too much to get it done."
"Oh Severus— I never imagined our life would be this perfect. There hasn't been one single part I haven't loved."
"Me neither Hermione. And this child, is only the beginning."
She wanted to show him just how much she loved him, so as he began running her a bath, she stripped completely naked, and put on one of his Slytherin robes. It didn't clasp in front, giving him a perfect view of her body. Each breast was concealed beneath the thick fabric, and her lovely sex was bared for him to see. He nearly fell into the tub when she walked into the bathroom.
"My God! You're going to kill me. Do you know that? I don't believe I've ever seen such an erotic site before."
"Well, I have an idea of something to do that would warrant a bath. What do you say? Hmmm…" She reached beneath the robe, and pinched her right nipple. He nearly came in his pants. Not only was she trying to seduce him, but she was touching herself as well. He couldn't imagine getting more aroused. There simply was no way possible.
"My, my. Your new hormones have turned you into quite the little minx haven't they?"
She flicked the other nipple, and that was all the answer he needed. He stripped his clothes off in record time. And before she knew it, he had her pressed against the wall, his erection begging for entrance. She kissed his earlobe, neck and collarbone, sending shivers down his spine. It was simply electrifying to have her kiss him so tenderly. "Not against the wall, you're too tall. Come over here."
She panted between breaths, trying to pull him over to the counter. He followed, and picked her up, gently placing her down on the sink. She wrapped her legs around his waist, pulling him deep inside her. There simply was no other way to put it. They weren't making love, they were both enjoying raw, sensual sex. He pressed further and further inside, her ragged breathing flowing into his ears like a beautiful melody. He loved the noises she made when they made love. He could make her whimper, moan, and beg with just the slightest twist of his hips, or a vigorous thrust.
"Oh, Severus." In a few brief moments, their bodies were soaked with sweat. Their hair clung to their faces, cheeks flushed and panting uncontrollably. She began moaning louder and louder until Severus felt her muscles tighten around him. Her legs pulled her tighter, and she wrapped her arms around his neck, trying to get him closer. He placed a soft hand to her clitoris, massaging tiny circles as he plummeted deep inside her. It wasn't but a few more thrusts and they both were crying out each other's names in climatic bliss. Once they'd recovered, he pulled her close for another soft kiss, and pulled out of her. He lifted her up and removed his robe from her before placing her down into the bathtub. He sank in behind her, washing her body with a soft sponge she loved so much. He washed her breasts first, then made his way towards their unborn baby. He still couldn't believe he wasn't dreaming. He now had everything he could ever want. It seemed life was finally going to be good.
After they bathed, he wrapped her in an oversized towel, bearing the Slytherin crest, no less. He carried her into the bedroom, and snuggled her in before getting a glass of cider for them. Once back into the bedchamber, he lit a fire and snuggled in behind her. He hated to tell her he was leaving in the morning after breakfast. But he had to. "Hermione, I have to go to the Ministry tomorrow."
"I know Severus. Albus asked me to cover your classes until you return. He said it should only take a few days."
"I hope I am back by the weekend. Sirius is going as well. It seems he knows about Macnair's involvement with Lily and James' murder. He has been advised to give him a memory charm so that he can't recall any incriminating evidence against me. Arthur, Percy, Harry, Sirius and I will be the only ones present during the interrogation. I hope it goes as well as expected."
"I do too. I hope it doesn't bring back too many painful memories for you."
"I hope not, but I know it will. I emptied my thoughts into a Pensieve many years ago and destroyed it. I have no desire to take a stroll down that memory lane. But if it brings those responsible for Lily and James' death to justice, then I'm more than willing. I hope Harry holds up. He has seen the worst of the war, but he has no idea what death eaters did to people. I'm not proud of my past. Not in the least." He turned his head away from hers, and she knew he needed reassurance that he was a good man.
"Severus, look at me. I love you and I do not care what is in your past. You were a very different man then. You no longer support them nor their ways. I know you have changed, and you have repaid your debts. Let no one make you think anything else."
"You truly are a remarkable woman. Do you know that?"
"I've been told that once, or twice." She placed a feather light kiss to his lips, and snuggled into her favorite sleeping position. She was so excited that she really couldn't fall asleep. Just the thought of another being growing inside her was so overwhelming. She felt a few tears trickle down her cheek, but she didn't wipe them away. They were tears of joy, ones she hadn't cried since the night Severus proposed to her. That seemed so long ago. Yet, it had only been a few months.
Severus himself was lying there unable to go to sleep. He thought of how wonderful their life was going to be. He thought about their son, or daughter growing inside the most heavenly being on earth. He wondered if it would have Hermione's bushy brown curls, or his silky straight raven hair. Maybe silky black curly locks. He hoped it got her sense of humor, as well as her intelligence. He was a smart man himself, but not as smart as she was. He also hoped the wizarding world would accept their child just as they had so many children before. He didn't want his child to be discriminated upon because of his past. He fell asleep, her tightly held in his arms, praying that the following day wouldn't bring too much pain to his heart. And also for Harry, he'd be hearing a very graphic account of his parents death, and the attempted murder of his own life.
Hermione woke alone. She knew Severus had to prepare the Veritaserum so she went to his work room to discuss his lesson plans before breakfast. She found him finishing the serum and making a list of questions for her to quiz his students. He only had a few classes that day, so she shouldn't feel overwhelmed. On Wednesday, he wanted her to have all classes brew a very powerful Shrinking Solution. Then on Thursday, he had his first years and he told her to make them brew something simple and harmless. She decided on a Pepperup Potion. On Friday, if he wasn't back, she was to make them write an essay on the dangers of using an Anti-Aging Potion. Overall, it should be very uneventful. At least he hoped it would be for her. "If you need any help, Remus will be able to assist you. And if worse comes to worse, place an assignment sheet on the door, assigning three feet of essays. That will shut them up."
"Thank you. I'm sure they won't be any trouble."
"Shall we go to breakfast now? I have been up since five and I am famished."
"Yes. Just let me get a more suitable robe. I doubt the entire school would appreciate seeing me in my nightgown."
"Of course. I'll meet you in the corridor." He kissed her goodbye, and finished packing up his things. He grabbed the overnight bag he had packed earlier, and headed out to meet her. Remus and Sirius were waiting for them in the Great Hall. Albus also was there waiting to give Severus his list of questions.
"Here you are Severus. I expect him to fully answer all the questions I have listed. If they are vague answers, instruct him to further explain." Severus looked at the list, and was shocked that there wasn't very many. Some of the questions were going to be a bit hard for Harry to witness though. But alas, if the boy could defeat Voldemort, surely these questions wouldn't kill him. At least Severus hoped so.
They finished breakfast, and Hermione and Remus walked them to the gates. They were to apparate to the Ministry for the interrogation. "Hermione, I hope you forgive me for leaving you. I will owl when the questioning has ended. If you need anything at all, send for me immediately. You're worth far more than that no good for nothing bastard." He embraced her tightly, sensing that he wouldn't be seeing her for some time.
"I'll be fine Severus. And if I need you, you'll be the first to know." She kissed him tenderly, and let it go on a far bit longer than she should. Sirius and Remus were saying their good byes, but had ended far sooner than Hermione and Severus.
"Come on you two. Isn't that how you got in that predicament in the first place?" Sirius was looking at them raising his trademark eyebrow.
"Leave them alone Paddy. If I hadn't had my way with you this morning, we'd be acting the same way, but probably far worse." Remus made Sirius blush, which didn't happen very oft
"I love you my dear. And I'll be back just as soon as I can."
Hermione and Remus walked back to the castle, discussing her pregnancy. Remus let her know that he was there for her if she needed anything. If was nice to know that she had someone she could confide in, and someone to look after her while Severus was away. She always liked Remus, and he held a place in her heart. And her likewise to him.
Severus and Sirius arrived at the Ministry just as Harry did. They asked him about how he and Ginny were doing, then they proceeded to go to the interrogation room. Severus could feel the evil in the room once he entered. Arthur and Percy were present, and Macnair was magically changed to a chair had had many wards placed on him so he couldn't escape, nor so he couldn't perform any magic. A bracelet was on his ankle preventing him from performing wandless magic. Severus wanted to spit in his face once he saw him. From the looks of it though, he hadn't been treated very nicely while in custody. Serves the fucking bastard right. He thought as he took his seat.
"Good morning gentlemen. Now that you are here, we may proceed. I am confident that no introductions are needed?" Arthur looked at the three men, and they all shook their heads. "Very good then. I will ask each of you to state your name, address, date of birth and place of employment. It is needed for our records. Sirius, care to start?"
"Not at all, Arthur. Sirius A. Black, Hogwarts School, November 2, 1960, unemployed."
"Harry James Potter, Godric's Hollow, July 31, 1980, self-employed."
"Severus S. Snape, Hogwarts School, April 1, 1960, Potions Master of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry."
"Thank you gentlemen. Now, Walden Macnair. Are you aware of the charges brought against you?"
"Yes." He spoke with his usual baritone, deeply annoying voice.
"And are you aware of the accusations that you are a loyal supporter of Lord Voldemort?"
"Yes, and proud of it." Always the arrogant bastard, thought Severus.
"Are you prepared to drink Veritaserum in order to receive a life sentence in Azkaban as opposed to the usual punishment of the Dementor's Kiss?"
"Yes, I am."
"Very good then. Father, you may proceed." Percy took his seat, and began recording the proceedings. Severus also took out parchment and an enchanted quill. It would copy any sound it heard in the room.
"Thank-you Percy. Walden Macnair, Severus Snape, potions master has prepared the Veritaserum as requested by the Ministry. He will give you three drops onto your tongue. If you resist or are found to be lying, you'll receive another dose, stronger than the last, and your sentence will be repealed. You will receive the Kiss. Is that understood?"
"Yeah, get on with it."
"Severus, then, by all means." Arthur motioned for Severus to administer the Veritaserum.
"I suppose you're thoroughly enjoying yourself, aren't you?" Macnair snarled at Severus.
"Yes. It's one of the highlights of my life. Right up there with taking a shite every morning." Sirius spat his coffee, and Harry got choked on a crumpet. They couldn't believe the way Severus was talking to him. They tried hard to stifle a laugh, but it proved to be too much. They were hysterical, and only a look from Arthur got them to shut up. Severus went about his business as if nothing had happened. He ordered Macnair to stick out his tongue, and he placed three drops into his mouth. He nodded to Arthur, and he proceeded with the questioning.
"Please state your full name, permanent address, date of birth, and your present employer."
"Walden Allister Macnair, 26430 Parker Lane, Bristol, born August 19, 1935, currently unemployed." Arthur looked to Percy for confirmation and he nodded.
"You have been arrested for using all three of the Unforgivable Curses on numerous occasions. And for being a loyal follower of Lord Voldemort, which makes you a Death Eater."
"And for being an accomplice to the murder of my parents, James and Lily Potter." Harry's face was red, and Sirius had to place a firm grip on his arm to keep him from killing him himself.
"Harry, please. If this is too much for you—" Arthur started but Sirius convinced him to let Harry stay and that there wouldn't be anymore outbursts. "One more, and you'll have to leave. I'm sorry." Harry simply nodded, and Arthur continued.
"I have a lot of questions prepared by Albus Dumbledore. He would like them thoroughly answered. Shall I begin with them?"
"By all means Severus, continue, continue." Severus took the parchment and stood so he could pace the room.
"First of all, why did you target one James Harry Potter, and Lillian Elizabeth Evans?"
"My lord wanted to destroy all threats to him. James and Harry were Godric's heirs, as well as Harry being Voldemort's heir making him the heir to Slytherin as well." Everyone looked at each other, and Harry nearly fell out of his chair. How could he be Voldemort's heir? There was never any mention of this before, so why was it coming out now.
"I think your Veritaserum is ineffective Severus." Arthur stated looking at him wide-eyed.
"Wait just a minute. I want to hear what he has to say." Harry was shocked, but he was definitely intrigued.
"Continue then. Explain yourself."
"Harry is Lily's son, she's Voldemort's daughter. How complicated is it?"
"How is she Voldemort's daughter? She was raised by Edgar Evans." Sirius knew he had to be lying.
"She was born to a witch, that died while giving birth. The Evans' were a family of squibs and they wanted a child that was a witch or wizard. So they placed an order at the hospital requesting to be notified of any orphaned magical children. When she was born, the hospital notified them and she was adopted immediately. Of course they didn't know she would be a witch, but they hoped she was. Her mother, Olivia, was intrigued by her green eyes. She fell in love with her immediately and she didn't care if Lily was a witch or not. Her own daughter Petunia wasn't as beautiful, nor as pleasant as Lily. She felt a special bond with her. Of course, that was all my Lord's doing. He raped Lily's birth mother, and placed a charm on her so she couldn't abort the child. Then he made sure she died giving birth. It was very simple."
"Why did he go to all the trouble, if he was just going to kill her anyway?"
"He wasn't going to kill Lily. Even dear Harry knows that much." Severus and Arthur looked at Harry, and he in turn looked to Sirius. When he nodded, Harry began telling them of the nightmares he had about his mother dying. They were astonished to learn that he didn't want to kill her at first, but only took her life because she wouldn't sacrifice Harry for him. Macnair smirked and Severus had to fight back the urge to beat the hell out of him. He hated that bastard being right.
"Why do you know all this? I personally know that Voldemort wasn't keen on anyone knowing his business. How did you come to learn about it?"
"Ah Severus. You're forgetting how close I was to our lord."
"Your lord. He hasn't been mine in over twenty years."
But he was at one time. I was his closest confidant. Even more so than Lucius. He told me all of his secrets. And I possess one that you would kill to learn. However, unless I am asked specifically about it, I will not tell you." Severus hated him having the upper hand. He knew he had to be in care of something great.
"Tell us what happened the night you went to Godric's Hollow." Sirius placed his hand over Harry's, trying to comfort his Godson.
"We had Peter spying for months. Even while you were still at Hogwarts. He ran into Lucius at a pub one night, and got a bit drunk. He said he was tired of putting up with the bullshit you guys had always gave him. Lucius gave him a way out. He joined our little group, and so the betrayal began."
"I never was aware of Peter's attendance at any of our meetings."
"He didn't attend. He was a well kept secret. No one knew. Only myself, Lord Voldemort and Lucius. It was a stroke of luck he was made the Potter's Secret Keeper. It couldn't have went any better for us."
"That was my own bloody damn fault. I never thought that greasy fuck could have done something so brave. He always had his balls in our pockets! I never dreamed he would be a traitor. But, I guess I should have known. When he was made Prongs and Lily's secret keeper, he got a gleam in his eye. It was the one he had when he returned from Hogsmeade after a trip to the brothel. I should have recognized him for what he really was." Sirius was now being comforted by Harry.
"It's not your fault Sirius. You have to quit blaming yourself. It's in the past, and all is forgiven." Severus tried to be as nice as he could. He too felt a bit responsible for James and Lily's deaths. After all, she was his best friend.
"What happened when you arrived at the Potter's house?"
"Peter showed up at the Malfoy Mansion and told us about him being their secret keeper. We brought him along for insurance that he wasn't lying. Of course we knew he wasn't, the little git didn't have enough balls to lie to our lord. Peter went in first, confirming that they all were there, and that they were alone. James told him Sirius had went to check on him, and that he would be pissed that he wasn't where he was supposed to be. Peter just laughed, and let our lord into their house. He went outside, while myself, Lord Voldemort, and Lucius entered. James was in the kitchen, and apparently Lily was getting Harry ready for bed. He screamed for her to take Harry and run, while he tried to take care of us. Our lord was too powerful, and killed him without a struggle. Myself and Lucius stayed down stairs, while Lord Voldemort went up to get the boy. I heard an argument between Lord Voldemort and Lily, then she screamed. He then tried to kill Harry. The little bastard couldn't die though. Lily sacrificed herself for him and she protected him."
Harry shed a few tears, and Sirius tried to comfort him. He shrugged his arm off of his shoulder, and put his head down. Severus felt so sorry for him, he knew Harry remembered what happened.
"I'm sure Lily knew what she was doing. She was a very clever witch. She was Lord Voldemort's daughter after all. He shrieked when the curse backfired off of Harry, and when we went to help him, all that was there was his cloak and his wand. We left immediately, and did as we had been told. We took his cloak and wand to his home, the Riddle House. We were told to place them in the catacombs along with his Grimorie. Then, we apparated back to our homes as if nothing happened. Those incompetent gits at the Ministry never even questioned us about it." He laughed, and Harry gripped for his wand. Sirius took it just in time for a curse to hit the wall. Arthur insisted he leave, unless he could hold Harry's, Sirius' and Severus' wands until the questioning was over. He couldn't take a chance on one of them killing their most informative suspect yet.
"You've spoken of the catacombs underneath the Riddle House. What all do they contain?"
"I told you."
"Albus Dumbledore has his wand. What else do they contain? Is his Grimorie still there?" Severus knew Voldemort kept one, all magnificent wizards did. He was dying to know what it contained and where it was.
"The Grimorie has been returned there. After his fall, we put everything back as we had been instructed."
"What does his Grimorie contain? Anything that could be of use to us?"
"I believe he has found a few counter curses that may be of interest to you, however, I doubt you'll be able to get the charms removed in order to open it." Severus knew there was no use in questioning him further, because he couldn't lie under the Veritaserum.
"Arthur, that is all Albus wanted to know. He was curious of the night James and Lily died. He hasn't asked anything else." Severus took his seat, and watched the enchanted quill finish writing.
"I want to know why you killed my son and his family?" Arthur's voice trembled as he spoke. He was virtually on the verge of tears.
"I didn't kill your son. My beloved grandson did."
"And where is he now?"
"I have no idea. He was instructed to leave as soon as he completed his task. I haven't seen nor heard from him since that evening. He informed me he had completed his mission. I told him I didn't need him any further, and that if I did need him, I'd find him."
"Why did you kill them?"
"Because you killed my lord. I am nothing without him, nor are any of the other followers."
Arthur's ears were red, and Percy nearly grabbed his own wand. "You killed my son and his family for revenge against a worthless no good son of a bitch?"
"You would be correct again. My, my aren't you an observant minister." The questioning went on for a few more hours, and Severus was eager to learn more about the catacombs beneath the Riddle House. Macnair told of how to enter them, you had to be a death eater. He then stated that you had to know how to disarm the wards. He told them how to remove each one, and then where the Grimoris his hidden. Although he was a horrible bastard, he was still a brilliant wizard. Severus could only imagine what great things were written in his personal journal.
After five hours of questioning, Severus and the others grew weary. They had suffered a horrible day remembering the past. Harry was a bit paler than usual, and Sirius insisted he return home to his wife. Arthur and Percy summoned a few guards to remove Macnair to his holding cell, and they all left. Severus and Sirius had rooms reserved at the Majestic for them. He was a bit sad when he entered the room. It reminded him of the first time he and Hermione had made love. Now, they were to start a family. His thoughts of her made him a bit happier. He went to the restaurant on the second floor for dinner, and to owl Albus and Hermione. He wanted to find Voldemort's Grimorie more than anything. He hoped Albus would see its importance and insist on him retrieving it. Even if Sirius had to tag along, it would be worth the journey to get his hands on something so powerful, something so great.
His letter to Albus contained the parchment of answers, and his letter to his love was full of sappy romance. He never thought he would be writing such things, but a lot of things he never thought would happen had lately. After sealing his letter, he finished his dinner, and was surprised to see Sirius coming towards him. All he wanted was to eat his dinner, and take a hot bath. Then, he'd retire early to bed so he could be prepared for the next day of questioning.
"Severus, care for a drink?" He had already brought one with him, so Severus couldn't refuse.
"A quick one Black. I have things to tend to." Severus sipped the drink, which was a very expensive brand of Scotch. He was astonished that Sirius had such taste.
"I just want to ask you about something. Do you think that there could be a counter curse to Avada Kedavra in his Grimorie?" Severus knew Sirius was thinking along the same lines as he was. It was scary they were on the both wavelength.
"Yes, I think that if anyone could discover one, Voldemort would be the person."
"Are you going to try to retrieve it?"
"Possibly. If Albus will allow. I am still recognized as a Death Eater, so I should have no trouble getting in. The wards shouldn't be much trouble either. It was very foolish of him to allow such idiots to help him devise a security plan." Severus finished his drink and hoped that Sirius didn't order another. Luckily, he didn't.
"Black, I must retire. I am dead on my feet. Thanks for the drink."
"Don't mention it. I do have one more thing to ask of you though, if you go to retrieve it, can I go along with you? I kind of feel I owe it to James, Lily and Harry."
"I understand. If Albus allows me, I shall let you tag along. As long as you promise to be a good little doggy." Severus left without waiting for a reply. He didn't hear Sirius mumble a 'slimy bastard' beneath his breath.
