Severus apparated to the gates of Hogwarts and began the long walk to the school. He bypassed the Headmaster's office, even though the old man would want a report, and walked straight into the dungeons. Severus knew it was too late to wake Harry but he also figured the boy would be awake anyhow.
He made his way down the damp corridors of the dungeon and stopped at the entrance to the Slytherin common room to whisper the password. When he finally got to the door of the seventh year boys dorms, he quietly opened it and peered in, hoping not to wake anyone. Theodore Nott was looking straight at him.
"Sir, was the Dark Lord displeased with my father?" He asked quietly.
Severus sighed and nodded slightly, "That he was. Is Mr. Potter asleep?"
Theodore opened his mouth to speak but before he could say anything another voice answered, "I am, Professor. Did you need to speak with me?" Harry said tiredly.
"I do. Would you mind getting dressed and following me?"
Harry shook his head and got out of bed, throwing a dressing gown on over his pajamas. "Lead the way, Sir."
Snape led him not to the Potions classroom or his office, but to his private chambers. He opened the door and waved the younger man in, closing, locking and sound proofing it after him.
"Have a seat, Harry. We've a lot to discuss," he said sadly. If there was one thing he hated most, it was hurting Harry. Of course, his behavior in past years would indicate otherwise, but he truly had always hated hurting him.
"Professor, what is it now?" He said in a pain laden voice; all of this was getting to be too much for him to handle.
"Harry, please, call me Severus outside of class. As long as we're in private you may call me by my given name." Harry nodded at his words and Severus indicated for him to sit, "Drink?" At the younger man's nod he poured them both a glass of scotch and handed him one.
"Now, there are a few things I think you should know. The Dark Lord…is aware of the situation and…" He sighed; there wasn't much he could say to the young man without telling him the truth and Voldemort already said he wanted Harry to think he had a hand in Draco's death. "He sends his condolences."
Harry snorted, "I bet he does. Anything else, Severus?"
This was the part where Severus had to tell him of Albus' intentions and it wasn't going to be easy or pretty, "Harry, I spoke with the Headmaster earlier this evening before I was called. In fact, I was on my way to speak with you when the Dark Lord summoned me. Draco…sent a letter, for you, to the Headmaster before he died. Albus doesn't want you to know what it says, but I think it's better that you do. He also doesn't want you to know the truth about what happened to Draco."
The dark haired young man stared at him, "Well, are you going to tell me what it said or not?"
Severus pulled the letter out of his pocket and handed it to him, "I thought it might be better if you read it yourself."
Harry nodded and sat back in his chair to read the last thing his love had ever written.
Harry,
I know that by the time you read this I'll be dead. I want you to know that I loved you more than I ever thought possible and that I always will. We will be together again one day, no one can prevent that.
Please promise me you won't do anything stupid like take your life or go after my father, for I know he's the one who ended my life. I don't know who else was involved, but perhaps Severus can help you find out. I'm aware that you and him don't get along very well but he can be trusted.
My one wish is that the Slytherins have accepted you as their own, even without me there, and are watching out for you. Don't you even think about getting pissed at that comment; I know you don't need anyone to look out for you but it would make me feel better if they did. Slytherin is a hard place to live in at first and you've had the misfortune of being a Gryffindor for six years previous.
Harry, don't spend the rest of your life mourning me. What we had was amazing and I will never forget it, even in death. People tried to pull us apart and my father finally succeeded, but know I'm in your heart even if I can't be there beside you. Please find someone else to share your life with, I couldn't bear it if you were lonely. You need someone to love you.
The one thing I want you to do, is once you're ready and strong enough, I want you to avenge me. But don't go rushing in head first all Gryffindor style. If you haven't become friends with Severus yet, you need to. He can help you succeed in that and show you how to stay alive long enough to carry out your plans.
Even though I died horribly, and I can promise you I did since my father had something to do with it, I was thinking of you the whole time. Please forgive me for anything they did to me in my last moments. I didn't beg or cry for mercy, but I did cry for you. Live your life to the fullest and keep my memory alive inside you, forever.
Your love,
Draco
Silent tears fell down his face as he read and Severus couldn't help but think that he was completely wrong about the young blonde man. It was clear from the letter that Draco loved Harry with all he was and that he trusted Severus completely. Why else would he tell Harry to be his friend as his dying wish? The last thing he ever wrote begged his lover to become friends with a cranky old man.
Harry sniffed lightly and looked up at Severus, "Have you read this?"
Embarrassed, Severus nodded, "I apologize, but it had already been read by the Headmaster and he asked me to read it as well. As soon as I found out, I rushed down here to tell you, but as I said, the Dark Lord called…"
He nodded, "Don't worry; I'm glad you read it. You knew him even better than I did." Harry paused for a moment before continuing, "He wanted us to be friends, I'm glad I could at least do that for him. And will get revenge for his death, even if it's the last thing I do. Lucius and Voldemort will pay."
Severus winced for he knew that his master had nothing to do with it and was just as pissed, although not as hurt, as Harry was about the whole thing.
"The only thing we can do for now is to train you so when you do meet them you will be ready. Are you willing to wait until then?"
The raven haired young man nodded, "I have to. It's one of the things he asked me to do, and although I would like to leave right now, I know I would die if I met them."
Severus smiled slightly, "Good, we shall begin as soon as possible. Let me think on it and I'll let you know tomorrow after class."
Harry thanked the man for his kindness, went as far as to hug him, which Severus loved, then went back to his dorm to try and get some sleep. The next morning he went to breakfast with all of the seventh year Slytherins surrounding him. It felt nice to have protection at a time like this.
Crabbe sat to his right with Goyle on his left. Millicent, Blaise, Pansy and Theodore sat across from them. They all ate somewhat quietly, every once in awhile someone would mention something from class the day before and ask questions about homework that was due today. None of them brought up Draco.
Classes went by quickly for Harry and before he knew it he was in Potions which was his last class of the day. He managed to brew his potion correctly and found himself with full marks by the end of the period. Afterwards he found himself sitting in the chair before Severus' desk and talking about his secret training.
They both decided that the training should be held as often as possible and that no one but the two of them and the few Slytherins Harry trusted; Blaise, Crabbe, Goyle, Pansy, Millicent and Theodore. His six new friends could help train him, seeing as they knew more about Death Eaters and the Dark Lord than he did, and it would also give him a chance to try and move on. He would never forget Draco, but Draco did ask him to find someone else to love. He knew he didn't have to right away, but he also knew it was what Draco wanted.
So Harry spent his time studying, doing homework, talking to his friends, ignoring the Gryffindors when he wasn't throwing insults at them, and training. When he had left Gryffindor at the end of last year he had left Quidditch behind as well. He knew he could take over as seeker for Slytherin without anyone arguing, but Quidditch would never be the same without Draco; he made it fun.
Harry trained so hard that by the time Christmas Hols rolled around he was a completely different person mentally, physically, and emotionally. No one was getting past his defenses any time soon. But he didn't quite know if he was ready yet.
Severus, as usual, stayed at the castle for Christmas but instead of spending it alone as he did every other year, Harry came down to his quarters and spent it with him most days. They spent most of the time talking and getting to know one another better, after all it was one of the things Draco asked.
Over the few weeks that they were on break, the two became closer. On Christmas Eve Harry stayed over night on the couch so neither of them had to wake up alone on Christmas morning. Christmas dinner in the Great Hall saw them sitting next to each other as well as a few of the Slytherins who had stayed as well to keep Harry company, and ignoring all those around them.
The Headmaster noticed the change in Harry and began to get more suspicious. He knew Severus had something to do with the whole thing and he wasn't very happy with his Potions Master that moment. Albus wasn't above blaming other people for the things he had done wrong.
After dinner Harry once again stayed in Severus' rooms, though on the couch. By New Years they had grown even closer and had taken to snuggling on the couch and falling asleep. Of course New Years Eve they went to a small party that Albus was holding for all those that stayed. As it drew closer to midnight Harry and Severus went out on the patio off the Great Hall to get some air.
The countdown began and the two of them inched closer without realizing it, still looking up at the stars. When it hit midnight, they kissed as if it were the most natural thing in the world. After they broke apart they stared at each other for a few moments. Now, one would expect Harry to feel guilty for kissing someone else so soon after Draco's death and one would also think that Severus would feel awkward for kissing Harry so soon after Draco's death, but neither felt it wrong or uncomfortable to be in each other's arms, kissing the new year in and the old one out.
What they weren't aware of, well they were pretty unaware of everything since they were so intent on exploring every crevice of each other's mouths, was someone was watching. Albus saw them kiss and became infuriated. He began to form a plan that would end up driving the two apart, causing Severus to die and, hopefully, landing Harry right where he wanted him.
A/n: Now, I know I'm getting them out quickly, but I have a deadline of about a week, a little more, and I'm on a roll. So...yeah. Keep reading and I'll keep writing. I, as of now, haven't planned a sequel, but if enough people ask for one, after the story is finished, and give me enough good ideas, I may consider writing one. I don't know. There are two more chapters and the epilogue left, so hold on tight. Sev and Harry are now, kind of, together. There will be some scenes with them in the next chapter. Like...New Years night. I plan on writing a slashy scene between them. I can't just go and not have one, now can I? I mean, I had one or two for Draco and Harry, right? So I'll write at least one or two for Sev and Harry, but I'm going to take a break for now. The next chapter should be out either later tonight or tomorrow. Ok, within the next few days, but very soon. Enjoy! Oh, and read and review, my lovlies. I love reviews!
