Chapter 9: Rumours
and The Room
The new term started in a
blizzard of nerves, relief and disappointment as the seventh years
received their mock exam results. Hermione was reasonably pleased
with her results, but felt there was room for improvement, though
Harry couldn't see it himself. The pair were spending a little more
time together, Ginny more with Ron. Hermione thought it was likely
that the couple had agreed to each distract one of the pair in the
wake of the new year's revelations and the subsequent distance
between Hermione and Ron. She didn't mind, she welcomed the
interference on this occasion. Both because she felt odd around Ron
and because she enjoyed catching up with Harry, they really hadn't
been that close last term. In the middle of the first week of term,
the two of them were sat in the library, for once not working but sat
behind a rather large book giggling and whispering to the frequent
piercing looks from Madame Pince. Hermione had finally accepted that
she must return to the scene of her last encounter with Malfoy and it
was much easier to do in Harry's company, he kept her spirits up with
secret games of animated pictionary. Part of her wanted to open up
and tell Harry what had happened, but something stopped her, she
guessed it was the whispering voice that kept telling her she'd
enjoyed it; that, she wanted to keep private.
In a pause in their
hushed laughter, Hermione looked up over the book to see those
familiar cold eyes glaring at her from the next desk. She held
Malfoy's gaze for a little longer than she meant to, searching his
face for a sign of what he was thinking. His face was tense, is eyes
unblinking, she wasn't sure why he was staring at her, but she didn't
think it was revulsion, there was something behind his eyes that told
her he felt much the same about their activities as she did. She
softened her face, giving him a hint of a smile, then broke the eye
contact, returning to the moving doodle in front of her.
"What was that
about?" Whispered Harry.
"I don't know."
She replied, almost honestly.
The following Friday
there was a buzz in the air in Gryffindor tower, a party was being
planned. Hermione turned a deaf ear, quite in the mood for a party
herself. On her way to Arithmancy after lunch she noticed some
Slytherins in a huddle, chattering excitedly in hushed tones. As she
approached, they halted their conversation and she thought nothing
more of it until she came across another group around a corner who
were not so careful, she caught a few words,
"Kirk's getting some
Firewhiskey."
"Where from?!"
Hermione raised an
eyebrow but said nothing as she passed. Two houses planning parties
on the same night? Most unusual. She arrived at the Arithmancy
classroom and took her seat next to Justin, who sat grinning.
"Hello." He
said, a slight chuckle in his voice. "Have you noticed anything
today?"
"Hmm. Lots of
muttering in small huddles. And there are party plans among my house.
And apparently Slytherin too."
"Ha." Justin
barked, then leant close, lowering his voice so much Hermione had to
lean even closer. "Hufflepuff too."
"What is going on?"
Hermione exclaimed. Justin pressed a finger to his lips,
"Shh. I'm going to
keep my ears open this afternoon, but I know members of my house have
been talking about the Room of Requirement. My best guess is that
some students started planning a secret party, but word has spread
and there are going to be a few gatecrashers." Hermione rolled
her eyes. This couldn't possibly be a good thing.
"Do you think we
should intervene? As Head Boy and Girl I mean. Shouldn't we put a
stop to this?" Justin thought about it for a moment, then shook
his head.
"No. I think we
should wait and see if any of our friends are planning to go and take
it from there. If someone openly invites me I'm going to go along,
ready to step in and end it if it turns nasty or anything."
Hermione wasn't totally convinced. But didn't have chance to object
as Professor Vector arrived and called for silence.
After the lesson Hermione
rushed to find Harry, he was sat in a corner of the Gryffindor common
room with Ginny, talking quietly.
"I'm sorry to
interrupt, but do you two know anything about..." She stopped,
seeing the surprised looks on their faces and their hands hurriedly
hiding some parchment. "What?" She asked impatiently.
"We know nothing."
Harry said quickly. Ginny nudged him and smiled up at Hermione.
"What were you going
to ask Hermione?" She said sweetly.
"Do you know
anything about a party tonight?" She asked, knowing the answer.
"Oh that. Yes."
Ginny responded. "Are you coming? If not we'll make sure
everyone keeps the noise down in here so as not to bother you."
Hermione raised her eyebrows.
"I doubt I'd hear
anything, seeing as it's in the Room of Requirement." She
snapped, Harry and Ginny's faces dropped.
"Who told you? More
importantly, you haven't told a teacher have you?" Harry asked
sulkily.
"Justin. And no."
She sat down in an empty chair and put her head in her hands. "It's
no use. I'll just have to go along with it." Looking up, she
added, "You do know that some Slytherins are planning to crash,
don't you?" Ginny laughed.
"They won't be
crashing, they're invited. It was actually a fifth year Ravenclaw's
idea initially, she's into strengthening inter-house relationships.
Then some of my year sort of took over and the whole thing escalated.
I don't know anyone above the third year who isn't going."
"Oh god. I hope the
Room of Requirement changes size as well as form! How on earth is
this being kept from the teachers?"
Harry explained that some
genius had come up with a very clever spell a bit like the age line
Dumbledore had used around the Goblet of Fire, to prevent anyone over
the age of eighteen from hearing any key words around the castle for
a few days. Hermione was a little taken aback by this. That was some
very advanced magic, she didn't know any student at Hogwarts could do
anything that powerful. Harry got out the parchment he and Ginny had
been hiding, it was a rota for door duty. Someone would be sat
outside the door all night to monitor those going in and do
occasional checks for teachers. Harry had selected certain trusted
people for this as they would would be using his precious map and
cloak.
"And, of course,
there'll be a silencing charm on the room." Ginny added.
Hermione was impressed by the thought and planning that had gone into
this event. She was decided, she would go along and let her hair
down, a bit.
After a very peculiar
dinner, with people dashing between house tables much more than usual
and a palpable static charge in the air from all the anticipation,
Hermione and Ginny made their way quickly to Ginny's room where she
grabbed her outfit and grooming essentials. They then went up to
Hermione's room to get ready with Parvati and Lavender, who had
sneaked in some Butterbeer to get the party started early. The girls
started drinking and laughing, exchanging clothes and doing each
other's hair. Ginny had chosen a pair of particularly tight jeans and
a light blue and brown fitted vest top with a navy blue mesh top in a
spider-web pattern over the top. Parvati curled Ginny's hair with a
cunning little spell and it fell in gorgeous ringlets around her
face. She looked stunning and Lavender fluttered around her trying
different make-up on her to go with her outfit. Hermione stood
staring at her wardrobe.
"I have nothing to
wear. I promised myself I would never say that!" She burst out
laughing and the others came to her rescue, pulling things out of
their own wardrobes as well as hers, holding them up in front of her
in different combinations. Eventually they settled on a mid-thigh
length, black velvet skirt that clung to her curvaceous hips, with
opaque black tights, a dark green satin bodice of Lavender's that did
a great job of emphasizing her narrow waist and back while at the
same time pushing up her fabulous breasts to form a jaw-dropping
cleavage. The outfit was completed by knee high black boots and a
silver necklace with a gorgeous onyx pendant that teasingly pointed
down her top. The girls cooed at Hermione as she stood in front of
the mirror, looking at herself from all angles.
"You look drop dead
gorgeous!" Ginny praised. "I never knew you had such a
great figure." Lavender helped Hermione put her make-up on,
picking out a dark green eye shadow to go with her bodice and a rich,
dark lipstick. Applying a fresh dose of her Sleekeazy's Spritz,
Hermione pulled her hair up into a half ponytail and brushed her long
hair nice and straight down her back and finished with a spray of her
favourite perfume, Ghost.
Once the girls were all
ready, they made their way to the common room to meet the boys. Harry
greeted Ginny with a rather intimate and enthusiastic embrace, and
the other boys gaped at Hermione in shock. Neville and Ron were both
speechless, Dean and Seamus whistled and hooted in appreciation. It
was gone eight o'clock by the time the Gryffindors started slipping
out of the portrait hole in twos and threes. Hermione went with Harry
and Ginny, Ron had gone ahead with the map and cloak, as he was to be
the first to take guard duty. Along the way they picked up two
Ravenclaw girls and arrived at the door. Ron appeared in front of
them as he pulled the cloak off, grinning from ear to ear.
"I've just been
inside, just to have a look. It's amazing, wait 'til you see!"
He opened the door and the small group filed in.
Hermione gasped when she
saw it. The room was huge, much bigger than it had been for their DA
meetings, it was longer than it was wide and about half the size of
the great hall. The walls were dark red, with gold drapes hanging in
grand gothic arches tied with satin sashes all around the room, huge
chandeliers hung from the ceiling. There were large, blue suede sofas
all around the edges, with low, chrome tables in front of them and
little matching stools dotted around, large candles floated around
the room in stunning greens and yellow. The carpet was black with the
four house crests, larger than life emblazoned upon it, spaced out
along the length of the room. At the far end was a long table covered
in goblets and bottles of every alcohol imaginable from both the
wizarding and the muggle worlds. Behind that was a raised platform
with what Hermione guessed to be a DJ booth and on the wall behind it
were shelves lined with wizarding records and what looked like muggle
CDs. It was absolutely perfect, Hermione was stunned. There were
already a few Hufflepuffs and half a dozen Ravenclaws there, Ginny
pointed to one of them and whispered to Hermione,
"That's the girl who
started all this." At first people were surprised to see their
Head Girl there, but, seeing her dressed up for the occasion figured
out quickly that she was there to enjoy herself, not report them.
Dean and Seamus arrived not long after Hermione, Harry and Ginny and
immediately made their way up to the drinks table. Dean eyed the DJ
booth with a wicked grin and ran to it, running his finger along the
shelves, he called over his shoulder almost as an afterthought,
"Is it ok if I put
some music on?" A couple of Ravenclaws went up to him and the
three of them looked at the equipment and music, apparently
discussing how it all worked. The room was filling up quite quickly
now and Hermione lead the way to a sofa half way up the room, next to
the Gryffindor crest. Just as Harry was asking what the ladies wanted
to drink, the sound system drowned him out with a face-melting guitar
intro to a Weird Sisters song. The three friends grinned at each
other. This was going to be one hell of a party.
