CHAPTER NINE
Jack chuckled as he reappeared on Thor's ship. He turned to Daniel and said smugly, "What did I tell ya? I knew they were going to try to detain us. I have a feeling that Gandalf really hates us about now."
Daniel shook his head, annoyed, and replied, "I'm sure. You know you would be too if someone constantly beamed into your home and/or workplace and didn't even bother telling you how it was done. I mean, what would you do if someone just beamed into the SGC without a how-do-you-do, stirred up some trouble, and left?"
Jack crossed his arms and looked at Daniel for a moment. His gaze then slid over to the small, gray alien being that was watching them with a curious expression. He looked back at Daniel, arched an eyebrow and said, "You're right. I've never been in that position."
Daniel gaped at Jack for a moment and sighed. "You're right. Forgive me," he said.
Jack smirked. "I'll think about it." He turned and walked off.
Daniel looked at Sam and shook his head. "I wanted him to stay why?" he asked.
Sam grinned. "You know you would've missed him if he had left."
"Maybe," Daniel muttered doubtfully.
Sam snickered and walked off. Daniel followed her and made his way over to Jack, who was talking to Thor. Jack looked up as Daniel stepped next to him. He had an irritated look on his face.
"What's going on?" Daniel asked.
"It seems our mysterious guest is awake. Professor Snape, I think the idiot at the school called him. Apparently, he hasn't appreciated our hospitality," Jack remarked cheerfully.
"Oh?" Daniel asked, curious.
Thor's little mouth tightened in what looked like annoyance. "Indeed. He was quite vocal when he awoke. He called quite loudly for several minutes, demanding to talk to someone. I heard him say something about idiotic Muggles, though I am not sure what that means," Thor replied.
"Didn't that Dumbledore guy say that Muggles were non-magical beings?" Sam asked skeptically.
Jack rolled his eyes. "Yes, because we all believe in magic. Please, those people found some alien technology and now they think they're wizards. Wands, my ass," he muttered.
"Regardless of what they think, we have someone in Thor's brig who thinks he's a wizard and he sounds a little angry. We should go talk to him and see what he has to say. As I said before, he might have some answers for us," Daniel commented.
"Fine, Teal'c and I will go talk to him. I want to know how he can change into a panther," Jack said.
Daniel frowned. "Why you and Teal'c? I want to talk to him too."
Jack sighed. "Danny, you know as well as I do that if you went to talk to the man, we would never get a word in edgewise. That or he would use you as a hostage," he muttered.
Daniel glared at Jack balefully. "You know, not everyone I talk to tries to kidnap me." He glared harder when he heard stifled laughter.
"Of course not, Daniel," Jack said, his tone patronizing.
"I don't like you," Daniel said imperiously. He turned and walked out of the room.
Jack chuckled as Sam grinned at him. "You know he's going to make you regret that later," she commented.
"Yeah, but I'll worry about it when he's safe," Jack said smugly.
Sam shook her head and began a discussion with Thor about the shields.
"Mitchell, hold the fort. Teal'c and I have someone to interrogate"¦er"¦I mean talk to," Jack amended.
"Understood, sir," Mitchell replied sharply, a grin on his face. "Have fun with that."
"Oh, I will. Come on, Teal'c, let's go talk to our guest," Jack said, and they both walked out of the room.
o-------o-------o-------o
Jack made his way towards the brig, Teal'c beside him. He didn't understand what was going on, but he didn't like it. Some things just weren't adding up. A woman had kidnapped Daniel in a case of mistaken identity and now they were in the middle of some secret society of supposed wizards that had technology that dated back to the Ancients. Why was it never simple when it came to Daniel's kidnappings?
Speaking of Daniel, something was off with him as well. He had been noticeably jumpy. The fact that he didn't have the urge to interrogate their prisoner about his culture was strange. Jack had also noticed an almost wistful gaze in Daniel's eyes as they made their way out of the castle earlier. Daniel had been looking at the moving pictures with an almost fond gaze. Not to mention the fact that he seemed to know where he was going. Daniel had guided them towards the bathroom with almost no hesitation. There was something going on. Daniel was hiding something and Jack was determined to figure it out. Later though, when they had time.
Jack stepped into the brig and walked up to the cell that held the dark-haired man. He looked him over and smirked. He could see why Daniel was interested in the man. He had character. The long black hair gleamed in the light, and his skin was pale. He had a feeling that if he took off those funny-looking clothes, he would see the body of a fighter. The man had an aura of a predator and he looked dangerous. He remembered Daniel's reaction to the man's voice and he had to admit, the man had a voice that could make you melt.
"Howdy ho, kitty cat," Jack trilled cheerfully.
The man glared at him viciously and Jack smirked. "You know, you really should watch where you transform. You never know who is watching. There are these lovely things called cameras. Imagine our surprise when we found a man instead of a panther in the room where we had locked it up. So, how did you do it? Hologram? Shield of some sort? What sort of technology makes a cat transform into a man?" Jack asked.
"Let me go, you stupid muggle," the man hissed coldly.
"Now, see, that's just rude. Here I am, making polite conversation and you have to go and be rude," Jack said mockingly. He turned to Teal'c and asked, "Now, is that any way to act?"
"Indeed not," Teal'c said, his deep voice rumbling.
The man looked at Teal'c and frowned slightly. He looked Teal'c up and down and asked, "What are you?"
Jack froze and blinked rapidly. Teal'c arched an eyebrow, as close to showing surprise as the man would ever get. "To what do you refer?" Teal'c asked.
"You're not human," the man said.
Jack snorted. "Really? Well, according to that red-headed idiot in the castle, you're Professor Snape and you're a wizard. I would believe that, really, if you didn't show signs of technology. I'm afraid I can't believe in Wizards. Your little energy sticks are very interesting, but I refuse to believe they're 'magical' wands." He quoted the air with his fingers.
Snape glared at him. "You have a non-human next to you and yet you don't believe in magic. Give me my wand, and I'll be glad to show you," he offered coldly.
Jack laughed. "Right, because I'm just stupid enough to fall for that. What makes you think my buddy here isn't human? He looks human to me."
Snape sneered. "Not all things non-human look different and you wouldn't know a non-human if he hit you upside the head," he retorted coldly.
Jack grinned. "You would be surprised by what I know."
Snape glared at him balefully. "I demand to be released. You muggles cannot keep me here. They'll be searching for me and you'll regret it once they find me," Snape snarled.
Jack smirked. "They can try, but trust me when I say, they won't find you here," he commented smugly.
"You'd be surprised what they can do," Snape retorted in a threatening tone.
"Mmm"¦maybe"¦but they still won't find you here. Now, I heard why that woman kidnapped Danny, but what I want to know is why she seemed to think that he was whoever she was looking for. Why Daniel? How could he possibly be the person she seems to think he is when her friend disappeared five years ago? I've worked with Daniel almost ten years now, and he was well-known among the academic community before that. He didn't just suddenly appear out of nowhere. He had a paper trail a mile long. What makes that psycho lady think Daniel is this Harry Porter?" Jack asked.
"Potter," Teal'c interjected.
Jack looked at him in confusion. "Huh?"
"His name is Harry Potter," Teal's replied.
"How do you know? You weren't even around when they said his name," Jack asked in confusion.
Teal's smiled mysteriously and refused to answer.
Jack looked at him strangely before turning back to Snape. "Regardless of the name, I want to know what makes anyone think Daniel is this Harry Potter."
"I never said he was Harry Potter. Potter disappeared five years ago. As you said, there is no way that your friend can be Harry Potter. Mrs. Malfoy is clearly delusional, which doesn't surprise me at all. She took her friend's disappearance badly and has been searching for him ever since. I do not know how she came to believe that Daniel Jackson is her friend, but unless he has the ability to be two people in two places at one time," Snape replied, eyes cold, "obviously, he cannot be Harry Potter."
"Fine, I understand that you don't know. On to something else. Where did you get the technology for the shields around the castle? I know that there's no way that anyone on Earth could even begin to build something that advanced, so you had to have either brought it with you or found a stash of technology somewhere. Where?" Jack asked.
Snape smirked. "It's not technology."
Jack sighed in resignation. "I know I'm going to regret this, but if it's not technology, then what is it?" he asked with mock trepidation.
"Magic," Snape told him scornfully.
Jack moaned as if in pain and shook his head. "I knew you were going to say that. I just knew it!" he replied bitterly. "Danny is never going to let me live this down. Look, you know as well as I do that there is no such thing as magic. What you have is some very advanced Ancient technology. Now, not many people on Earth would know about that, but we do. The shields surrounding your castle are an offshoot of Ancient technology, not magic. You can sit here and stew for all I care, but you will answer us," Jack said coolly.
"I refuse to answer any more of your questions. You simply wouldn't understand," Snape growled.
"Hey!" Jack retorted. "If you say that we're too young, I'm going to open this door and beat you."
Snape looked at him strangely. His gaze swept over Jack and he smirked. "You're welcome to try any time," he responded mildly, "and **I** don't think you're anywhere near young."
"Hey! Was that an insult?" Jack demanded. He turned to Teal'c and asked, "He just insulted me, didn't he?"
Teal'c arched an eyebrow in amusement. "Indeed," he deadpanned.
Jack huffed. "Fine, for that, I'm leaving. You can just sit here. I don't want to talk to you anymore." He turned and walked out of the room.
Teal'c turned to leave but paused, glancing at Snape. "You may not know what that female wanted with DanielJackson, but you know more than you are saying. Know this, Tau'ri, if DanielJackson is harmed in anyway, I will hold you personally responsible. And I am a formidable warrior when angry. I protect my friends and DanielJackson is one of my closest. This is your only warning." He nodded minutely and walked out of the room.
Jack was leaning against the wall, waiting for him. "So, did you threaten him?" he asked cheerfully.
"I did indeed, O'Neill," Teal'c replied.
"Ah, for me?" Jack asked whimsically.
"No, for DanielJackson. I believe you are old enough to take care of yourself," Teal'c answered before walking off.
"What?! Hey! How come you threatened him for Daniel but not me? Teal'c? Hey, Teal'c! Wait up for me buddy," Jack yelled as he rushed after his friend.
o-------o-------o-------o
Several hours had gone by and Daniel was getting restless. He needed to talk to Snape. He looked over at Jack and noticed that he was busy. He bit his lip briefly before walking out of the room. He made his way to the brig and walked up to the cell that his former professor was in.
Snape was lying on the bench, staring up at the ceiling. He turned his head to look at Daniel and got up from the bench. He walked over to the door and waited, as Daniel got closer.
"Daniel Jackson. I was wondering when I would see you," Snape said.
"Yeah, well, call it my insatiable curiosity. I was wondering how you were doing," Daniel replied.
"I want to go home, Mr. Jackson," Snape answered.
"Dr. Jackson, or you can just call me Daniel."
"Indeed," Snape said archly.
Daniel held back a snicker. Who knew that Teal'c and Snape would have so much in common? He frowned slightly as he realized that they really did have things in common. They both defied an evil man to do what was right. They were both honorable, if slightly misunderstood. They were both formidable fighters. They were both very protective of him, even though Snape didn't know that he was Harry Potter. Snape had taught him what he needed to know in order to defeat Voldemort. He had become a friend of sorts, and protected Harry in any way that he could.
"Are you hungry? We have some food. It's not the best, I'm afraid, considering where we are, but it should tide you over," Daniel offered.
"I would prefer to go home. I have done nothing to deserve being held prisoner here," Snape replied coldly.
"Ah, see, you did. At least, according to Jack. The first mistake was in kidnapping me, the second was in making Jack finding me, the third was in attacking Jack, the fourth was in transforming from a panther to a man, the fifth is the fact that you have very advanced shields around the castle, the sixth"¦"
"Enough, you twit," Snape yelled. "I demand to be released."
"Er"¦sorry, can't. I find it ironic that when I was in a similar situation, I was refused as well. You tried to detain me, and then erase my memories. I don't like that very much. I get kidnapped enough without your friend's help, thank you very much. Even when we went to help Dumbledore, he still tried to detain us. That's gratitude for you," Daniel said with irritation.
Snape's intense black eyes zoomed in on him and he bit out, "What do you mean you helped Dumbledore?"
"Oh, there were some guys in red robes attacking your school. We went to help," Daniel answered.
"Why?" Snape demanded.
"Hey, I might have a problem with you kidnapping me, but I won't allow children to get hurt if I can help it. Nor would Jack. He has a soft spot when it comes to kids," Daniel said with a gentle smile.
"Was anyone killed?" Snape asked, real concern showing on his face.
"None of the children were, though there were some minor injuries. I'm not sure about anyone else," Daniel answered.
"I need to leave. I need to go home. Now is not the time for me to be here. Let me out!" Snape demanded.
"I have no say in it, Professor Snape."
"You're lying," Snape accused.
Daniel paused a moment. "Well, not lying, per se. I guess I could open this door and let you go, but trust me, you have no way of escaping this place."
"Release me and we can find out," Snape replied persuasively.
Daniel laughed. "Sorry, no."
"I could make it worth your while," Snape said seductively. He gave Daniel a very nearly charming smile.
Daniel swallowed hard. He'd had grown attracted to this man in his seventh year at Hogwarts, even though he knew there was no chance of them ever getting together. He had never thought to hear Snape sound like that when speaking to him. He grimaced a little when he realized that if Snape knew who he truly was, he wouldn't be seductive, he would pissed.
"As interesting as that sounds, and boy, does it sound interesting, I'm afraid I'm not that type of guy. Why, I barely know you," Daniel said primly.
Snape gave Daniel a fierce look and said, "You know me, Mr. Potter."
Daniel froze. "I'm sorry, but I thought I told you once before, I'm not Harry Potter," he retorted.
Snape snorted. "You may be able to fool the others, but remember, Potter, I trained you. I know you. You are Harry Potter."
"Well, isn't that interesting," a voice said from behind him.
Daniel turned around slowly and swallowed at the hard look that Jack was giving him. Oh god, everything had just come to a screeching halt.
