Chapter 9
A little blonde girl, dressed in what were obviously her pajamas, was sitting on the floor in the middle of a rather busy sitting room. She was examining the porcelain doll on the burgundy rug in front of her. The doll looked very much like her owner: blond hair, blue eyes, but the doll wore a ruffled pink dress.
A woman called the little girl’s name and she ran from view into the next room.
Draco stood outside the front door of the Burrow and watched his daughter through a window. His mother had come to him in the night and had given him back his identity. Draco did not wake Harry before he left. He was sorely tempted to give Harry a wake-up call he’d not soon forget, but he chose instead to find his daughter. He knew that Harry would understand.
Draco had apparated to the Weasley’s home at nine o’clock that morning to find his daughter playing with toys in the front room while Molly made breakfast. It had not been Draco’s intention to linger outside the window like he had, but he didn’t want to ruin the moment. He did not know how long it would take his daughter to be comfortable enough with him to let her guard down around him.
If she took after Draco at all, it wouldn’t be soon. Draco wished more than anything in that moment that Vera had inherited Harry’s personality. After the little girl had retreated to the kitchen for her breakfast, Draco knocked on the door.
Harry informed the Weasleys that Draco had returned, and they had graciously taken Vera off of Harry’s hands while Draco retrieved his memory. When Arthur Weasley answered the door he was surprised not just to see Draco, but to see Draco there without Harry.
“It’s me again,” Draco said with a small smile on his face.
“It’s good to have you back,” Arthur replied before pulling Draco into an embrace.
If Draco had not gotten his memories back in their entirety he would have been very surprised by the warmth that the Weasley’s showed him. It seemed that Harry’s adoptive parents were as susceptible to his charms as his friends were. Harry’s charms that is. The Weasley’s had a bit of a hard time warming up to Draco at first, but in the end it was Harry’s happiness that mattered to them.
They eventually saw Draco as just a young man who needed some stability in his life. They saw that he could be more than just Lucius Malfoy’s son. They realized that Draco was good for Harry; and with Harry in his life, Draco’s mannerisms became more casual, for Draco anyway.
The real turning point though, was during the Easter holiday during Harry and Draco’s seventh year. The Weasleys were comfortable enough with Harry and Draco’s relationship to invite both boys to stay with the family over their break from school. Draco had been sitting alone in the Weasley's back garden, brooding, lost in himself.
“What’s the matter Draco?” Molly had asked when she found the teenager. He'd been sitting under the apple tree with an open box of chocolate covered cocoanut crèmes in his lap. Next to the box was a letter which simply said, “All my love, Mother.”
“I’m sorry Mrs. Weasley,” Draco said while quickly composing himself. “It’s nothing worth worrying about.”
“How about you let me decide what is and is not worth worrying about, hmm?” she replied, joining Draco under the shade of the tree.
“It’s nothing really. My mother has sent me these chocolates every month for as long as I’ve been in school. I know that there wasn’t any thought in it, but seeing them here now that she and father have been locked away is a little much. I know that the sweet shop will continue to send them, every month, with a copy of the same note until I owl them to stop.
“I just haven’t bothered. It’s like I can imagine that everything is normal again—or at least as normal as it ever was. What’s sad is that I’m essentially sending myself chocolates now that all of the Malfoy estates and money belong to me. How pathetic is that?”
“It’s not pathetic at all, dear. I know that you’ve been going through a drastic transition with your parents gone, and while our families have never gotten on," Draco snorted at this, "I am sorry to see them torn away from you like this. ”
“But that’s exactly it. I haven’t really been torn from anything. I idolized my father when I was young, and I always thought that my mother was exactly what a pure-blood witch should be, but I’m not sure that we ever loved one another. Everything and nothing has changed. ”
Draco looked at the box of chocolates in his lap one last time, and then held them out to offer one to Molly. When she shook her head no, Draco cast evanesco and the box vanished.
“I guess it’s time to grow up. ”
~oOo~
Arthur ushered him into the house and called for Molly. The Weasley matriarch wandered into the living room, wiping her hands on her apron, and broke into a huge smile when she set eyes on Draco. She was even more enthusiastic than her husband was when it came to welcoming the blonde home.
“So have you come back to us?” she asked seriously while looking Draco straight in the eye.
“I’m back. It seemed like the potion would never kick in, but then I woke up this morning and everything was back. ”
“Why didn’t Harry come with you?”
“Because I didn’t wake him up before I came here,” the blonde said rather sheepishly. In hindsight he knew that he probably should have said something to his lover, but he thought that the note he left Harry would suffice.
“How’s she doing?” Draco asked indicating the little girl who was currently attempting to look disinterested in the events taking place in the living room.
“Why don’t you find out for yourself? Arthur and I can go have our breakfast and leave you two to get to know one another. ”
“That would be wonderful,” Draco said. His voice was a little shaky, giving away the nerves he was trying so hard to mask, and his breathing was more shallow than normal.
“V—“
“Molly,” Draco interjected. “Let me. Please. ”
Mrs. Weasley nodded her understanding and led her husband into the kitchen.
“Vera,” Draco called softly.
A little blond head peaked around the corner to see who this new person was. The little girl took a breath and marched bravely into the living room. When she was about three feet from Draco, she held out her hand and introduced herself.
“Hello Vera. My name's Draco. ”
“I know who you are,” she responded. She didn’t have anything accusatory or negative in her tone the way he may have thought she would. Harry made sure that their daughter knew that Draco had not abandoned them, but you really can’t tell how a child will react until they are presented with the situation.
Draco crouched down so that he could look his daughter in the eyes as he said, “I’ve missed you so much. ”
People say that you love your own child instantly; that it doesn’t matter if you’ve never seen them or spoken to them because there is just something so inherently right about loving them. And Draco did love his daughter the moment he set eyes on her. It would probably be more accurate to say that he loved her the moment he got his memories back.
Vera was definitely Harry’s child, because in that moment the little girl closed the gap between herself and her father and wrapped her arms around his neck. This made Draco happier than words could express. He had been a very reserved child and felt that if he were put in the same situation that his daughter found herself in, he would be extremely reserved and distant if not a little scared.
“Can I call you papa? I already call Daddy daddy, so can I call you Papa?”
Draco had always figured that his children would call him father, but in light of the situation he would grant his daughter anything that her heart desired, and he told her so.
~oOo~
Harry stretched out his arms and arched his back as he drug himself out of sleep. Although it had been Draco’s sadness that prompted Harry to invite him to bed, Harry was so happy to be able to sleep with his lover in his arms. He wondered if he could spoon up behind Draco and go back to sleep without waking the blonde.
Harry turned onto his left side and reached out to feel –nothing. Wait a second. Harry sat up in bed. Draco didn’t go back to his room in the middle of the night did he? Surely he wouldn’t be so uncomfortable sleeping next to Harry. Of course he would be uncomfortable. Draco has always distanced himself from other people, that was just his personality, memory loss or no.
It was then that Harry noticed a note taped to his door. He shoved the covers off of himself and walked to the door, pulling the note off to read it.
Dear Harry,
I’m sorry I left without telling you this morning; believe me I was tempted to wake you in a way that you’d never forget.
The potion worked. I finally know what was going wrong but I’ll tell you about that in person. I hope you won’t be upset that I left without you, but I needed to finally meet my daughter. Our daughter. God, just writing that puts a smile on my face.
You can find me at the Weasley’s when you’re ready.
I love you so much baby!
Draco
Harry lightly knocked on the door to the Weasley's kitchen as he walked through it. Molly smiled and put her finger to her lips, gesturing that Harry should go on through to the other room.
“But papa, I don’t understand. If Alice wanted to catch the rabbit so badly, why didn’t she petrify him?” Vera asked in all seriousness.
“Well my darling, Alice is a muggle. She didn’t have a wand. And besides, if she didn’t follow the white rabbit she never would have gotten to see wonderland.”
Harry watched as Draco read Vera one of the children’s books that were piled neatly in one corner of the room. Draco had the little girl on his lap while she told him about what her aunt ‘Mione told her about drinking potions you find sitting around. She had just started to say that it served Alice right for not reading the label on the bottle first when Harry cleared his throat.
“Daddy!” Very yelled hopping off Draco’s lap and running into Harry’s arms. “I’ve missed you so much daddy! Did you miss me?” Harry swung her up into his arms and held her tight.
“Of course I missed you. Have you been getting acquainted with your papa?” Harry asked, utilizing the name that Vera must have come up with for Draco. He knew that Draco would never have chosen something as pedestrian as ‘papa’ for himself.
She nodded enthusiastically, looking up at Draco who had come to stand behind Harry. Draco wrapped his arms around his lover and buried his nose in Harry’s neck. He couldn’t believe how much he had missed out on. He wasn’t there for Harry’s pregnancy or any of Vera’s firsts. He had a lot to make up for and catch up on.
~oOo~
Harry and Draco thanked the Weasley's for taking care of Vera for the last week and made their way home.
The day was filled with activities which centered around Draco getting to know the little girl. He read to her, played games with her and took her flying. She tried to get Draco to let her fly alone but Harry put his foot down and told her that she knew perfectly well that she wasn’t allowed to fly by herself.
You couldn’t blame her for trying, after all Draco didn’t know all the rules of the house yet. He smirked at this. Yes, Vera definitely had some Malfoy in her.
After they both tucked Vera into bed, Draco led Harry back to what would be their room. He turned on a bit of soft music and pulled Harry flush against him. He wrapped his arms around the brunette and began to sway gently to the beat.
“I can’t believe we’ve been apart for so long. ” Draco breathed into Harry’s neck.
“I know what you mean. It feels like an eternity has gone by but in some ways it still feels like you were here with me yesterday. ” Harry didn’t want to cry but he couldn’t help it. It seemed too good to be true that Draco had finally come home to him; but he didn’t care. He would fight anyone and anything that tried to come between them again.
Draco made love to Harry that night. It was slow, and sensual, and it relayed every feeling that Draco had for his lover. They fit together perfectly; they belonged to each other.
Harry knew that he would always remember that night as one of the best in his life.
