Chapter 9 Make a Wish
Sky could hear the Potions Master before she set eyes on him. He was on the bed, the covers tangled around his legs as he twitched and writhed in agony. His moans became whimpers, too exhausted to do more. She could here the cracking of his bones each time a spasm wracked through his body and it made her feel sick. The thought that one person could do such a thing to another human being was beyond her ken.
Sky made her way over to the side of the bed. He was naked and the covers tangled on his legs did nothing to hide his modesty. Her eyes flicked briefly to his appendage. It draped across his thigh but as he moved the appendage slipped between his legs, the large head resting on the covers.
Sky didn’t know that he was overly built. His was the only one she had ever seen. But now she knew what it was used for, she decided that it would hurt to have something that big inside of her. Rowena told her that when the man gets excited that it gets hard and grows even bigger.
She shuddered at the thought.
Her wand pulled in her hand and she aimed it at Sir. As happened on the last occasion, the tip of her wand emitted a soft blue light. It was joined with a similar glow from the stone at her neck and was soon bathing the form on the bed in the same soft blue light.
She watched as the light intensified and his breathing steadied. The blueness lasted much longer then it had last time and slowly his body began to relax. The spasms ceased and his cries quieted.
As the light retreated back into the wand and stone, he looked as if he were sleeping peacefully. Sky moved to pull the sheet up around his body and his eyes fluttered open.
“You.”
Quickly she backed away as he tried to focus on her. By the time he raised himself to his elbows, Sky had shot through the bedroom door and was back in the wall house with Rowena.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Severus thought he must have imagined seeing the girl at his bedside. It wouldn’t be the first time. She was in his dreams every night. But he wasn’t sure that he had been dreaming this time. He could not remember anything other then walking into his rooms and seeing Albus. From then on, it was pain, nothing but pain. But the pain left him, left almost as quickly as it arrived. He remembered the Dark Lord casting the Cruciatus. He remembered falling. ‘Shit, he remembered everything up to coming back here.’
Then he remembered something else. Back in the summer, he’d arrived back after Voldemort had cast crucio on him. Slumped on the chair, he’d realised the pain had gone and the girl was at the side of him. He’d thought she was trying to poison him. When he discovered otherwise, he did not question her further.
Now the pain had gone again and he thought he’d seen her; her of all people. She scuttled away like a frightened rabbit when he looked at her. ‘Wait a minute. This was his living quarters she was in and the outer door had not opened and closed.’ He would have heard it, felt the wards. Tentatively, he moved one of his legs, waiting for the pain. There was none. In fact, there was no pain anywhere in his body.
Stealthily getting from the bed, he crept over to the door. He was naked but could not have cared less. She had to be in the next room. Standing to the side of the doorway, he pulled the door wide and looked in. The torches flared to life immediately and he scanned the room. She wasn’t in here. Checking the outer door, he found it locked and warded so he headed to his lab. The torches flared up in there too. She was gone. But where?
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
“Did you heal him? Did he see you? Are you alright?” Rowena asked as soon as Sky flew through the door.
“Yes, yes and yes.” She panted. “He’s healed. He saw me but I don’t think he was sure I was real. I left while he was still trying to sit up. It was a close thing though.”
“You have done well, Sky. Why don’t you take a look? See how he is.”
“I’m sure he’ll be fine, Rowena.”
“Take a look anyway. I’m curious myself.”
So, Sky moved back in front of the mirror. She was tired and wanted to go to bed; forget this ever happened. She pointed her wand at the reflection of her stone and thought about Sir. He was pacing up and down his office wearing a confused expression and nothing else.
“Oh my.” Rowena exclaimed. “Oh Merlin. He’s built like a hippogriff girl.”
Sky turned beet red at Rowena’s words and lost her concentration. The mirror lost its image and showed only her holding the wand.
“Rowena please.”
The woman in the portrait laughed. “I’m sorry dear. But I really haven’t seen one so big before. I wouldn’t have believed it possible.”
“Yes well … I pity the woman who has to … you know … with him.”
Rowena said nothing.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
“She was here Albus. I am convinced of it. I just cannot figure out how.”
“Severus, my boy you were in a lot of pain. You imagined it. It is not possible that anyone could have entered and left your quarters last night. I set the wards on your rooms myself. I would have felt them had they been tampered with.”
“And how do you explain the sudden disappearance of the after effects of the curse, Albus. Is that my imagination also?”
“Well no.. But perhaps you did not suffer the curse for as long as we originally thought.”
“Really Albus. I know exactly how long that bloody curse lasted. I was there remember. She is the only one who could have possibly done it.”
Severus could have bitten his tongue. He had never told Albus that she healed him once before.
“Oh? And why would that be Severus?”
The Potions Master gave a brief account of what happened that night when he woke to find the girl trying to pour a healing potion down his throat. He did not mention the fact that he broke her wrist for doing so. He ran his fingers through his hair before turning back to Albus.
“I know … I know because … it is not the first time. There was one time during the summer. The girl was in bed and I was summoned and arrived back here in something of a state. I had been crucio’d and collapsed into the chair. Next I knew, she was standing over me and trying to pour a healing potion down my throat. And no, she did not succeed. I came round and stopped her. But the pain had already gone. I used Legilimens and discovered that the wand and stone at her neck worked together to rid me of the effects of the curse.”
“Then I do not know what to say, Severus. How on earth could she get in and out of Hogwarts like that? And why did she go to the trouble of coming here to help you and then flee?”
“Probably for the same reason she takes flight every time she is sighted. You know as well as I what a frightened little rabbit she is. There is also the fact that we gave her such a marvellous send off. Don’t you remember Albus?”
“Of course I remember. Do you truly think I could forget? We have to find her. Somehow.”
“Yes, well. When you figure out a way, let me know.”
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
On December twenty first, Sky woke, bathed and dressed. She went to the kitchen and had her breakfast then went to see Rowena for her lessons.
“We shall not be having lessons today Sky. It is your birthday I know, but it is also winter solstice.”
Sky looked at Rowena waiting for her to explain.
“This afternoon there will be a small celebration of your birthday.”
Still Sky remained silent. She didn’t know what a celebration was.
“Never mind. You will find out later. This morning you may do as you please. Why don‘t you put on some warm clothes and get a bit of fresh air. It has been snowing and the countryside looks beautiful.”
Something was going on. Sky just knew it. But, she put on a warm cloak that was conveniently laying on the bed waiting for her and a pair of boots that were waiting near the entrance and went outside.
Rowena was right. Everywhere Sky looked, it was white. When she walked through the snow, it made crunching noises under her feet. Picking some up, she let it fall through her gloved fingers. She trudged through the snow for a while and something landed on her head. It was cold and when she put her hand up to feel she discovered it was snow. Then she heard shouting and laughing. She knew it was dangerous but she worked her way to the gates and looked in.
There were about eight or nine students throwing lumps of snow at each other, some hitting and some missing. All were shouting and laughing.
Sky was fascinated with them and stood watching and smiling, forgetting that she needed to be not seen. When a shadow fell across her face, she looked up into the face of Sir. And, the Headmaster was with him.
Sky’s smile fell as she turned and ran along the wall. It seemed all she ever did out here was run. She was sick of it. But not as sick as she would be if they caught her.
It was hard going through the snow. It was soft and deep and her feet sunk with every step. She hoped they were having as much difficulty as she was. She looked over her shoulder and saw that they were.
She made it to the overlap and slipped in. She leaned back against the wall, trying to catch her breath and nearly screamed out when a hand appeared in front of her, not inside the overlap but on the outside of the wall. It was Sir’s hand. It moved along the wall, across the overlap and carried on for a bit before coming back. It was strange watching it. Then another joined it and then two more. Both men were touching the wall, pressing, pushing and probing. She couldn’t see the men themselves, just the parts of them that were touching the wall; their hands, the toe of a boot, a piece of cloak. It was weird.
She could hear them too; every word, their heavy breathing and the sound of their feet crunching in the snow. A wand tapped at the wall but nothing happened.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
“This is the place Albus. Look, her footprints end here. But she just disappeared. Did you see her disappear?”
“I saw Severus. Most strange. It was as if she sunk into the wall. Became part of it.”
“Well we know that is not possible, so what happened to her?”
“Your guess is as good as mine. But at least we know why Fang took such an interest in this particular part of the wall each time he was out here.”
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Sky almost giggled. They were totally at a loss, that much was clear. She could almost imagine the expression on Sir’s face when she vanished from sight. It felt good to have got one over on the miserable bugger.
Sky had learned that word from Sal. He used it a lot, along with ‘pain in the arse’ and sometimes even ‘bollocks‘. He refused to tell her what many of the words meant and told her not to use them herself.
“Miserable bugger.” She whispered as Sir’s hands ran over the wall once more. The hands stopped when she spoke, waited a moment and carried on.
“Pain in the arse.” She said a bit louder and shoved her hand over her mouth to stifle her giggles as the side of his head came into contact with the wall, pressing his ear against it and listening.
Using her knuckles, she rapped on the wall where his ear was shouting ‘bollocks’ at the same time and he jumped away.
Sky had to go inside as her laughter finally escaped and she heard both men tapping at the wall. She closed the door and sank to the floor, laughing as she never had before.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
“She’s in there Albus I am sure of it. You heard her.”
“I did indeed. ‘Miserable bugger’ I believe she said.”
Severus frowned at the Headmaster. “What she said is irrelevant. The fact is she spoke, and from this wall.”
“I think ‘pain in the arse’ was another comment was it not?” The Headmaster was holding his sides now literally giggling with mirth.”
“It is not funny, Albus.”
“No, but the expression on your face was, especially when your ear was rapped and she shouted ‘bollocks‘.”
Albus was in stitches by now and Severus was not pleased.
“I am glad you find it all so amusing Albus. Perhaps then your sense of humour is such that it will tell you how to get her out of there. I shall leave you to it.”
The Potions Master trudged angrily through the snow back to Hogwarts, leaving the old man to work things out for himself.
The trouble was that when Albus did sober up he still had no idea what to do. At a loss, he too went back to the warmth and comfort of Hogwarts.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Sky, cheeks rosy from the cold and eyes sparkling from her laughter, pulled off her boots and cloak and padded into the room. She got quite a shock when she did. There were three extra portraits on the walls. Sal was there and Helga, as well as Rowena of course, and another, a man.
And the table in the room had all kinds of fancy food on it and a big cake. There were candles on the cake.
As Sky looked round confused they all shouted; “Happy Birthday.”
Sky looked round to see who they were shouting it to, but obviously there was no one else.
“Happy Birthday Sky.” Sal called to her. “Come on girl. Don’t go all shy on me.”
“S … Sal. What’s going on? Helga? Why are you all here?”
“Why to wish you happy birthday of course.” Sal told her. “Oh and meet Godric Gryffindor. He will be your final teacher come February.”
“Hello Sir. Pleased to meet you.”
“I am delighted to meet you Sky. But please, call me Godric.”
“Thank you Sir. I mean Godric.”
She stood looking at them all for a minute, rubbing her stone, not sure what she should do.
Rowena spoke up. “Well come and sit down. You look frozen. What on earth happened out there? I’ve never heard you laugh like that before.”
Sky looked a bit sheepish but once she got into her story she was laughing again, especially Sal and Godric when they heard what she had called the Potions Master. Rowena and Helga joined in when she told them about rapping on his ear and the way he jumped.
“Serves the old fart right.” Sal told them.
“Sal, I do wish you would stop teaching the girl language like that. It is not fitting for a young lady.”
“Oh come on Rowena. You can curse better then any of us. I’ve heard you.”
“Godric Gryffindor, no you have not.”
“Yes, he has Rowena. We all have.” Helga couldn’t help laughing herself at the affronted look on Rowena’s face.
Rowena blushed and Sky knew the others must be telling the truth, especially when the woman started laughing herself.
“Come and blow your candles out, Sky. Then you can make a wish.”
“A wish? Helga, I don’t under …”
“If you can blow out all the candles in one go, you get to make a wish. You can wish for anything you want. But don’t tell what you wish for. If you do it won’t come true.”
“So if I keep my wish a secret, it’ll happen?”
The founders all nodded. Sky stood at the table, took a deep breath and blew as hard as she could. As soon as all the candles were out, she closed her eyes tight and made her wish.
“Well. What did you wish for?”
I can’t tell you that Sal. It won’t come true. Not that I think it will anyway.”
Sky didn’t think there was a hope in hell of her wish coming true, candles or no. She cut the cake and ate as much as she could. It didn’t feel right with just her eating, but they’d gone to all this trouble just for her. No one had ever done that before now. She didn’t even know she had a birthday till Rowena told her. She hadn’t even known how old she was.
Sir told her she was fourteen. If he’d been right she would be sixteen now. But she wasn’t. She was eighteen and Godric told her that in the wizarding world you came of age at seventeen. But in the muggle world, it was eighteen.
That meant she was a grown up. An adult. She didn’t feel like an adult though. She didn’t feel like anything really. But she had eaten so much and after this morning’s escapade she was tired.
“Why don’t you go and have a sleep dear? I’ll give you a call later.”
“It’s only six o’clock Rowena. And it’s rude when we have guests.”
The founders told her it was fine. They had to leave anyway.
“Oh Sky, there’s just one more thing before you go.”
She turned to look at Sal.
“Over there. On the chair.”
Sky looked over at the chair to see five parcels. Each wrapped in a different coloured paper representing the four house colours and one in plain brown.
“What are they?”
“Birthday presents, of course. You have missed out on your childhood, Sky. We wanted to make up a little for that.”
“I have? I mean you do? I don’t know what … thank you.”
Picking up the presents, she hugged them to her as her eyes filled with tears. She struggled to hold them in as her breath hitched. “They’re beautiful.”
The four portraits would have laughed if she had not looked so innocently in awe of the gifts.
“Sky,” Godric told her kindly. “You are meant to open them. The gifts are inside.”
Sky looked at him for a moment as if he were mad. They looked perfect as they were. Then she looked embarrassed because she hadn’t realised what she was meant to do with them.
Laying them on the table, she picked up the smallest first. Taking care not to rip the paper as she opened it, she found two books, a beautiful white feather quill and a pot of blue ink. Both books were bound in blue leather and one had gold lettering on the front. It read ’Sky’s Diary’ along with an embossed picture of a Raven. She opened it to find blank pages.
Once Rowena explained what the diary was for, Sky walked over to the portrait and kissed Rowena on the cheek.
“Thank you Rowena. I will use it every day.”
“The other book is for you to write down all your feelings, your memories of the things you remember. Things that have hurt you, made you smile, or cry. Anything past or present. In time, the book will decide on a title and it will appear when it deems the time to be right.
The next present was wrapped in green and silver paper and contained a green velvet box which in turn contained a dainty silver chain with a charm hanging from it in the form of a snake. Its eyes were formed from two green gems. Sky didn’t know they were emeralds but she loved it and fastened it round her neck.
“Sal it’s beautiful. Thank you so much.”
As with Rowena, she kissed the portrait of Sal on the cheek. His dark eyes brightened when she did.
“You are welcome. It is a reminder that you are always welcome in the house of Slytherin.”
Next was Helga’s, another box was revealed. This one was bigger than Sal’s box and Sky opened it to find a small silver knife. The handle was engraved with a badger. It too had gems embedded for the eyes but these were yellow. Helga told her it was an Altheme and that the gems were citrine. There was also a small leather sheath to hold the dagger when not in use. Once she had kissed and thanked Helga she moved on to the fourth parcel.
This one was from Godric and contained a leather wrist strap to hold her wand. Sky fastened it around her wrist and placed her wand inside. She discovered that with a simple flick of her wrist her wand would be in her hand in an instant. This sheath also was engraved. This time with a Gryphon and had rubies where the eyes would be. Once Sky had given Godric the same thanks as she had the others, she turned to the last one.
“That is from all of us.”
Sky took of the paper to find a box with knobs on it. “Thank you. What is it?”
They laughed. “It is a wireless. You can listen to wizarding or muggle music on that.” Godric told her. “Just turn the knobs.” Helga added.
Sky placed it on the table and jumped a mile when a noise blared out of the box.
“Turn the dial quickly.” Sal shouted over the din.
She did and the noise quieted to a soft tune. She turned the other one and found there were different tunes and songs to be heard depending on where she stopped turning. Her face lit up.
“I love this. Thank you so much.”
Sky picked up the presents she wasn’t wearing and made her way to her room. Laying everything on her dressing table, she undressed and climbed into bed. She must have been more tired then she realised because she was asleep almost as soon as her head hit the pillow.
