CH 9 Hogwarts
“Ready for what?” Lou asked.
“You are due a little journey.” Severus told her.
“Really, that’s great, I’ll get my jacket and money, are we going, shopping?”
‘Maybe they’re gonna get me a birthday card, or even a pressy.’ She thought excitedly.
Before she had chance to stand up, Moon was standing in front of her with her jacket.
It was old and a bit torn in places, but Lou thought nothing of it until she noticed the others putting smart capes on. Then she felt self conscious and tried not to be noticed.
“No one minds Lou.” Said a voice behind her.
She turned to see Mr Lupin in a robe that was slightly frayed at the edges. “I’m not bothered.” She lied.
Remus waved his wand and her jacket repaired itself. It wasn’t fantastic, but it looked better than it had.
“Wow thanks Mr Lupin. That was neat.”
Lou was allowed to call Severus, Remus and Albus by their first names when they were alone, but when others were present she had to call them by their titles.
“Mr Lupin.”
“What is it Lou?”
“I’m not being rude but, if you lot walk into a supermarket dressed like that, everyone’s gonna stare.”
He chuckled. “We are not going to a …supermarket did you call it? Trust me Lou, if you thought a simple repair spell on your coat was good, you are in for a treat.”
When Professor Snape knelt down in front of her and removed one of the cuffs she was ecstatic. Smiling, she held out her other ankle so he could remove that one too. This was the best present ever.
“That one stays.” He told as he got to his feet. “I have removed this so you may leave the house, it will be replaced when we reach our destination.”
“Oh.” She felt disappointed. “You still don’t trust me then?”
“I most certainly do not, now take my arm and come on.”
Lou took the Potion Masters arm and walked down the street, sandwiched between him and Mr Lupin until they reached a small green with tree’s and a few bushes. Lou hoped that maybe he would forget to put it back on later. She would show him how good she could be and when he remembered he wouldn’t put it on again. At least that’s what Lou thought.
“Why have we come here?” She wanted to know when they stopped amongst the bushes. “I don’t want to be in the bushes with you, I want to go back.”
“Calm down Lou, we are not staying here, just hold on to me and we can …”
“N …no.” She cried as Severus went to wrap his arms about her, ready for Apparation.
Remus caught his eye and muttered something under his breath at the same time as he flicked his wand in Lou’s direction.
She was bound from head to foot and when she opened her mouth to protest, no sound came out.
Her eyes filled with panic as Severus held her close. The panic turned to nausea as her world started spinning and she felt like she was being pressed through a tight hoop. Suddenly the pressure eased and her feet felt like they were on solid ground again, but the ground was spinning d and she felt ready to throw up.
Remus removed the binding and silencing spell and Severus let her go, though he kept hold of one of her arms to prevent her from falling.
Lou bent over and lost her breakfast on the ground. “Uuh. What just happened?”
“You vomited, what do you think happened?” Severus said disgusted.
“That’s not fair Severus, she had no idea what we were going to do, and it was her first time.”
“It was still disgusting.” He said, using his wand to clean the splatters from his shoes and the bottom of his trousers.
Lou shrugged her arm from his grip and teetered a bit as she tried to gain her balance. She was white as a sheet and almost fell backward when several of the men from the house suddenly appeared beside her.
“Eww that’s disgusting.” Said one, when he realised what he was standing in.
When Albus and several others appeared a minute later she succumbed to Severus’ arms, seeing as how he was the closest to her, and clung to him, trembling.
“Professor.” She whispered. “I’m sorry, whatever I did I’m sorry. Can we go back now, I don’t like this, whatever it is.”
Severus looked down at the girl wrapped around his waist. She was frightened out of her wits, that much was evident.
“Lou it’s alright, we Apparated, it is one of the ways we move about. You will be fine, come on and see where you are.”
Lou loosened her grip but didn’t let go completely. When she turned to look at where Severus was pointing she gasped. “Bloody hell. It’s a castle.”
“Hogwarts to be precise, and do stop with the language.”
“Sorry, it’s just that everything’s a bit of a shock. Why are we here? What’s Hogwarts, who lives here?”
“Hogwarts is a school for …”
“No, I don’t want to go to school, you’ll leave me there, please don’t”
“If you would allow me to finish, it is a school for young wizards and witches. You are here to be tested, nothing more.”
“Tested, what for? I’m not a witch so why do I need testing?”
The Headmaster lowered the wards and unlocked the gates to allow them all to go in, Lou tried to hold back. The place looked scary to her and she wasn’t happy about being here with a large group of grown men. She was afraid of what they would do to her. She’d never been with anyone but she knew what sex entailed. She knew about paedophiles and satanic rituals. She’d read about it in newspapers.
“I’m not going in, I don’t need testing. I want to go back, I wont tell if you let me go back.”
“What on earth are you talking about?” Severus demanded. “Of course you are going in, and why would you want to tell, come to think of it, what would you tell?”
“I …I know what goes on in places like this, I’ve read the papers. Please don’t make me go in there.”
“I do not know what you have read, but you are going to be tested for magical ability, nothing more.”
“But I haven’t got any magic, I want to go back, please.”
Remus moved closer to Severus. “I think she believes we are about to do something of a more personal nature Severus.”
The Potions Master looked at Lupin for a moment as if he thought the man insane. Then he looked back at Lou and saw how terrified she was. “Louhi, it is not what you think, no one is going to … do anything to you.”
“You say that now, how do I know your telling the truth?”
“You don’t, you will just have to take our word for it. Lou, had we wanted to do anything, do you not think we would have done so by now?”
“Maybe.” She reluctantly admitted. “I don’t know. Maybe you were waiting for -
-
a special festival or something. You promise you wont ...you know?”
“I give you my oath as a wizard.”
“As do I.” Remus added.
A swirl of magic circled the two men for a split second and was gone.
“What was that?” Lou asked.
“That was a magical oath taking effect.” said Remus. “It would be impossible for us to do anything of a …sexual nature to you. Not that it was our intention in the first place. Lou we understand why you are afraid, bur honestly, there is no need. You have to learn to trust us.”
She gave them a side on glance and watched as the others walked across the rolling grounds of the castle. The Professor still held her arm firmly and she knew there was no chance she could outrun any of them with her leg the way it was, even if they didn’t have magic. Part resigned, she nodded her head and allowed them to lead her along the path that led to the castle.
Lou looked skyward, trying to take in the sheer immensity of the place.
“It’s enormous.” She breathed. “How many rooms has it got?”
“No one knows, too many to count, new rooms are always appearing at Hogwarts.
“What do you mean? How can new rooms just appear?”
The two men glanced at each other.
“You started this line of conversation Lupin, you can explain.”
“Lou, oh I can’t, the whole place is magic Lou, I really cannot explain to you how rooms appear, or even why most of them do. It is just part of Hogwarts.”
“Why is it called Hogwarts then?”
“It just is.” Severus told her. “Stop asking so many questions.”
Lou gave him a frown before she struggled up the steps to the main entrance. When Severus moved to pick her up she pulled away, she wanted to do this herself.
Keeping hold of her arm, he supported her until they were through the massive doors.
She nearly jumped out of her skin when the heavy doors slammed shut behind them and almost didn’t notice when the Potions Master knelt and snapped the cuff back round her lower leg.
“Nooo, not again please. What did you do that for? I wont run away, please, I don’t need it.”
“Never the less, it stays. Come.”
Everyone was grouped in front of a large fireplace in the main hall.
The Headmaster aimed his wand and said, “Incendio.” The fireplace erupted into flames and he scooped a handful of powder from a small chest on the mantle.
“What’s he doi …WOAH. Where did he go?”
No one answered as one by one they travelled the floo to the seventh floor.
“Erm, we’re not going in that are we?”
“Would you prefer to walk seven flights of stairs on your own?” Severus asked her.
“No but …”
“Then we shall be travelling by floo.”
“But we’ll get burnt. We’ll die and …”
“Do not talk rubbish, why would we travel this way if it held any danger. Now come on.”
Lou pulled away from him sharply, no way was he gonna make her step into the fire. “I’m not going in there, no way. Your barmy if you think I’m g ..ahh. Gerroffme.” She squealed when a pair of strong arms grabbed her from behind and stepped into the fireplace with her.
She coughed and spun, spluttered and choked, spun some more, she grazed her elbows and the backs of her hands, her knees were knocked and she lost a shoe somewhere along the way.
When Remus stepped out of the fireplace on the seventh floor corridor with her, he looked ready to collapse with the struggling girl.
Severus didn’t even try to hold back a smirk when he stepped from the floo behind Remus, holding the lost shoe. It could quite easily have been him in that state.
Albus dashed over to see if Lou was alright.
“No I’m not, I’ve had enough.” She told him. Her face was covered in soot and she looked like a chimney sweep, only her teeth and the whites of her eyes showing.
She turned on Remus and pushed him away from her. “I hate you.” She yelled at him. “You keep away from me, or else.”
She limped away from him as Albus waved a cleaning spell over her.
When Severus made to grab her arm she tried to push him too, but he was two quick for her and took hold of both her arms from behind.
Leaning close to her ear he hissed, “You promised to behave yourself, now do so or I shall put you over my knee. You know I do not make idle threats.”
She shrugged him off and glared at the lot of them. They were all looking at her and she decided she hated them all.
When the Headmaster started walking back and forth in front of a piece of wall her curiosity was taken up again, but she wasn’t talking to anyone now so she couldn’t ask why he was doing what he did. She already thought he was a bit barmy anyway, so this was probably just something he did.
When he stopped and a door appeared she wondered if maybe he wasn’t quite as barmy as she first thought.
Lou had no choice but to follow them through the door, considering that the Professor and Mr Lupin were behind her and the Professor had his hand between her shoulders shoving her in that direction anyway.
The room was about the same size as the kitchen in the house she was staying at now. Chairs were arranged along one wall and there was a small platform in the middle of the floor. Once more alarm bells began to ring in Lou’s head and when Severus started to lead her to the platform she turned to him and grabbed the front of his robes.
“You promised. You promised. You did that oath thingy and said you wouldn‘t.” She told him, her eyes wet with tears.
“Severus stopped and looked into her eyes. “Lou, I did promise and that promise is still in effect. All you need to do is stand on the dais. You are to be tested for magical powers, nothing more.”
“What? Why didn’t you tell me that sooner, I thought you were gonna …”
“I did, now just stand on the dais, you will be fine.”
Lou couldn’t help sobbing quietly as she stepped onto the platform. Standing here alone while the others took seats at the side of the room, she suddenly felt more exposed then she ever had in her whole life. She wrapped her arms around herself, not liking the sense of loneliness and vulnerability that threatened to overpower her.
“Lou.” The Headmaster told her gently as he stepped forward. “Do not be frightened, I am going to cast a series of spells that will tell us if you do in fact have magical powers. We believe you have them, but that your powers were grounded when you were a baby, harnessed if you like. If you do have them, we shall hopefully be able to restore them to you, if you do not, then nothing will be lost and you will carry on as you did before. Are you ready?”
“No.” She sobbed. “But I can’t stop you can I?”
“No you cannot, but I would prefer that you gave your consent to this. It will make the casting easier if you do not resist.”
“Will it hurt?”
“No.”
“Will it spin me about or make me feel sick?”
“It may make you feel a little strange if your powers are released.”
“And I wont get mouthfuls of soot?”
“No.” He told her with a chuckle.
“Okay then, but you have to stop if I don’t like it.”
“No Lou, once started, the spell must continue to it’s completion.”
“But what if I don’t like it?”
“Wait and see.” He told her as he stepped back and raised his wand.
Lou stared at him like a rabbit in headlights as he aimed his wand in her direction and moved it in a clockwise direction before pointing it at her. As he did he said,
“Relevare tekne.” (Reveal power.)
“Relevare magike.” (Reveal magic.)
“Relevare restrictus.” (Reveal restrictions.)
As everyone watched, an aura began to appear around Lou. She couldn’t see it, but she could feel it. She felt as though her whole being was buzzing. It wasn’t unpleasant, but it wasn’t pleasant either, just odd.
What everyone else saw was a strong light around her, a soft green shimmered through white, which in turn shimmered through orange and red, violet and gold. Each colour layered on top of another, vaguely taking the shape of Lou’s silhouette and moving with her as she swayed slightly.
“Finite incantatem.”
Severus, who was already standing to the side with his arms folded, dashed forward and caught Lou before she dropped to her knees.
“I’m alright, it was just a bit buzzy that’s all.”
She shrugged him off and stood her ground. She still hadn’t forgiven them for the fire.
Severus ignored her and stayed close by, just in case she started to sway again.
“Perhaps a chair would be advisable before we go any further Headmaster.”
“Quite right Severus, quite right. I should have thought of that myself. That was an exceptional aura you gave Louhi, I have never seen one so vibrant or dramatic.”
“I felt buzzy, I didn’t see anything though. What did it mean?”
“It means that we were correct in our assumptions my dear. You do indeed have magical ability, perhaps a little too much. However that cannot be helped.”
Turning to the rest of the group he spoke. “I need at least seven of the most powerful amongst you to help break this holding spell, and contain her at the same time. It is going to be very draining on all of us if the aura we have seen is anything to go by. Severus, Remus and Kingsley, Moody you too. Be ready to take over when the bind is removed. Myself of course, Mugden, would you mind? Oh and Elmsley, your assistance would be appreciated. If anyone else cares to join us, it would be acceptable.”
Lou was surrounded on all sides by fifteen men, and they all had their wands pointed at her.
“I don’t like this any more. I don’t want to have magic, I don’t need it.” She stood and made to step off the dais, but her feet were stuck. “What have you done? I want to get off now, I don’t want to be magic.”
“We did not adhere you Louhi, your own powers did that. It would seem they are ready to be released and are holding you until they are free. We cannot stop now, no matter how much you wish it.”
“But I don’t want my powers to make me do anything. Professor, please make them stop.” She pleaded in Severus’ direction. “I’ll be good, really good, so good you wont even know I’m there. I’m good at not being there, please.”
“I am sorry Lou, it would appear that none here have any option but to go ahead now. Do not be afraid, no harm will come to you.” ‘It’s the rest of us that needs to worry.’ He thought.
“Are we ready?” Albus asked the men gathered around Lou.
Each of them gave a nod as Lou yelled “Nooo.”
“Reles restrictus.” (Release restrictions.)
“Reles posse.” (Release power.)
“Liberate magike.” (Liberate magic.)
Lou, who’d sat down in shock as the Headmaster began his incantation, slowly lifted from the chair, hovering about a foot above it, her eyes wide, her expression one of horror as she realised she was floating. Every alternate wand emitted a bright orange beam in her direction. She could feel the heat from them. It didn’t burn, but it wasn’t very comfortable. She could see sweat on the foreheads of the ones who’s wands were working, and she wondered what the others were going to do to her. It felt like forever to Lou, and even longer to the others as they kept their wands trained on her for almost half an hour. A couple of the wizards found it too draining and fell to their knees, only to be replaced by others.
Finally, an exhausted Albus lowered his wand and the beams retracted into the wands.
Lou however stayed where she was. Her short hair stood on end as white lightening shot out from her fingertips, causing all in the room to duck as the lightening flashed and fired in all directions.
Severus, Remus, Moody and Kingsley now raised their wands to Lou and sent the strongest containment charms they knew in Lou’s direction. They were struggling even more then the first lot of wizards. Her magic was liberated, but out of control.
Albus managed to summon a fresh burst of energy from somewhere and joined with the four men to try and get some semblance of control over Lou’s incredible power force.
Lou seemed as though she was in a trance as she glowed from the inside out. The wound that had previously been healing nicely, opened and shot out more lightening, once again causing everyone in the room to dive for cover.
“We cannot go on like this for much longer.” Severus panted to the Headmaster. “She is out of control, I’ve never seen anything like it.”
