Severus green around the gills. He he.
Chapter 9
Severus did not comment. It was obvious she knew he had watched her dance many times from the main entrance, thinking he could not be seen.
“I believe there is more to you than meets the eye Miss Vance.”
“Paula, my name is Paula. I am not your Professor and it is not necessary to call me miss.”
“Very well Paula, but that does not change the fact that there is something different about you. I feel you are hiding something, am I right?”
“You are right that I am different, but I do not hide it. Ask me again at a later date, if you are ready I will tell you.”
“If I am ready? What is that supposed to mean?”
“It means you are not ready now. You still have many hurdles to jump Severus, hurdles of your own making. Some you have cleared, others I will help you cross, but not yet.”
With that, she began serving the chicken and vegetables while Severus opened the wine, a good vintage from his personal store, and they sat and ate.
There was no cutlery this time and when Severus complained, Paula told him this was how the food should be eaten, with much licking of the hands and wiping of the chin.
He had to admit it tasted much better this way, even though he hated the feel of the juices dripping down his neck. The chicken was stuffed with garlic, wild mushrooms, chestnuts and herbs. Some he could identify, some he could not.
“This is delicious, though you did not make us eat like this the last time I was here, or the time before that.”
“No one can eat stew with their fingers Severus.”
“What kind of stew was that anyway? It was an enjoyable but unusual taste.”
“First or second?”
“Pardon? Oh, both.”
“First time was Shoshoi.” At his questioning look she added, “Rabbit.”
“Really, I enjoyed that. And the second time?”
“Hedgehog.”
“I beg you pardon? I misheard you.”
“No, you did not. It was hedgehog.”
“Dear Gods woman, are you serious?” “You are. Oh Merlin!”
“Yes. That is why it was baked in clay, to loosen the spines from the flesh; it makes it easier to skin and kills the tics. What is wrong with you? You already said you liked it.”
Severus was appalled. “That was before you told me what it was. Tics? Oh Gods.” He studied his plate, his face taking on a grey pallor. “This is real chicken I presume?“
Paula laughed. “Of course it is, you watched it cook. Severus stop being so sensitive. Xa. Eat.” (Xa. Pronounced chah. X/ch as in loch.)
He did, but not with the same relish as he had been doing. His appetite returned when they reached the dessert. “I could not get my hands on anything called gooi, the elves had never heard of it, so I brought chocolate pudding instead.”
Paula laughed again. “Gooi means dessert Severus. I’m sorry, I forget sometimes that I use words no one understands.”
They chatted well into the night, discussing the students, potions and defence. Paula told him she intended to teach the students some hand to hand combat tactics after Christmas.
“Many of our students are greatly lacking in their defence lessons as it is Paula, it would be wise to bring them up to par instead of wasting time teaching them how to box.”
“Right, so sixth and seventh years now learning auror level defence is lacking is it? Most of my second years and some of the first can now produce a viable patronus and the fifth years are soon going to catch up with the sixth. Every student in each year knows what he or she are and are not capable of. Each one is learning to defend themselves admirably. They older ones are almost ready Severus, even after such a short time, all they needed was the proper encouragement to use the skills they already possessed. Many knew much more than they even realised and those from muggle backgrounds are learning from the others. They are all capable students, but those brought up in all magical families have no idea how to protect themselves against physical attack. Not many of the muggle borns can for that matter. That is why I intend to make sure they can. All of the students carry a knife, you know this as they use them in potions and herbology. Yet how many can defend themselves with one? A thick branch or a lump of rock, a leather belt, a book, a comb, even a schoolbag full of them, all are weapons Severus, all can save your life. After that, we can get down to the real reason I‘m here to teach, I believe the best defence against the enemy is offence. I will be teaching them how to recognise when someone intends them harm and how to counter it before it happens. I will teach them how to manipulate spells that are already sent their way and how to avoid them altogether.”
Severus narrowed his eyes at her. “You said they are almost ready. Ready for what?”
“You know as well as I do Severus. I do not expect you confirm anything with me, but I will be joining the Order in a few weeks and then we can talk more. The students will be ready to fight when the time comes. Romani people believe strongly that the future is predestined, I believe it can be changed if we try hard enough. If we work together, we must have Jekhipe, Zor and Slobuzenja. Unity, a oneness, strength and freedom Severus.”
“Admiral Sentiments, and ones I cannot fault. It would also seem I was right, you are hiding something. Why has the Headmaster kept this from us?”
“Kak has told you as much as you need to know, the rest will come in time. What there is to tell of me, is mine to tell, not Kak’s.”
“Never mind.” She added when he opened his mouth to ask what Kak meant.
“Severus I am very tired. I think I shall go to bed.”
“Paula, there was a reason I came out here tonight, and it was not only for supper.”
“Oh, and what was it?”
“I was going to suggest that you might want me to accompany you to the ball on Friday.”
“I see. Goodnight Severus.” Paula dampened down the fire as Severus looked on confused.
“Well?”
“What? I told you, I am tired.”
“You did not answer my question.” He said indignantly.
“I wasn’t aware you asked one. See you tomorrow at breakfast, you can ask me then.”
She disappeared into the bender and tied the flaps, leaving a very confused Potion Master to traipse back up to the castle wondering what just happened.
He had expected her to be grateful for his offer to take her to the ball. Instead, she acted as though … He stopped in his tracks and looked back. Surely, she did not expect him to actually ask if he could escort her. Did she? ‘Ridiculous.’ He thought.
