Chapter 9
Kathy dried her tears and blew her nose. Crying was not helping, she knew that, but it was hard, so hard to control her emotions. “Where am I?”
“You are at Hogwarts.”
“Hogwarts? That sounds familiar, why I don’t kn… Tomtom. She said, her voice once again barely audible. “Hogwarts where… where wizards and fairies and stuff go to school?”
“This is a school of witchcraft and wizardry yes, fairies are a somewhat different species.”
“So you… you’re one, a fai… a wizard?”
I am.”
“I knew a wizard once, a long time ago.”
“I know. I was the man that visited the orphanage all those times. Only then I was known a Sir Stephen Prince, a pseudonym.”
“A what?”
“My real name is Severus Snape. I do not hold a title as such, I am a Professor here at Hogwarts, although I do hold a Masters degree in potions.”
“You were Sir Stephen? I used to imagine that you would adopt me and Tomtom. Potions? What kind of potions?”
“Magical potions. Look, that really is beside the point, the thing is… the thing is the Headmaster should really be explaining all of this to you, not me. I was there to retrieve you, nothing more, and now I find myself forced to elucidate on something I find far more disconcerting than anything I have ever done before. In plain English Mrs Ripley, you were friendly with Tom Riddle throughout your childhood years. The events that took place until the moment I brought you here were completely beyond my control. I am saddened at the loss of your family, truly, I am, but I am unable to change the past. The fact is that it took place a long, long time ago, many years ago in fact. The year is now nineteen hundred and ninety five and you are in fact, or you should be, sixty five years old.”
She looked at him incredulously for a moment, her jaw slack as she tried to process his words, then she started to laugh. She laughed so hard her sides hurt.
Severus watched her and said nothing. He decided it would be best to let her get this… whatever it was, hysterical reaction? out of her system.
“Oh, that’s some sense of humour you’ve got Mr Snape. Oh, oh.” She dried her eyes and tried to stifle her laughter, still holding her aching sides. Just as she was calming down there was a knock at the door and the old, white haired wizard from last night entered. He wore long purple robes with silver moons and stars dotted all over them, and a matching pointed hat with a bell on top. This only served to set her laughter off again.
Albus entered the kitchen looking quite bemused. “Did I miss something Severus?”
The Potions Master stood and faced him with a scowl. “Yes as a matter of fact. I was just explaining how Mrs Ripley has travelled forward in time and is by all intents and purposes, sixty-five years old. I shall leave you to explain the rest shall I, as you should have done from the very beginning.”
He started to leave and Kathy suddenly stopped laughing when she heard him speak to the older man, a sudden panic overtaking her.
“No don’t. I mean, don’t go. You… you’re the only face I know, or you were a face I knew, something like that. Please stay here, for now at least. This is all too confusing to take in at once, I want to understand, really I do, but I need time. Normal time. Just… stay.”
He pinched the bridge of his nose, willing the headache that now threatened, to go away. He turned. “Very well, if my presence makes you feel more comfortable, I will stay for a while.”
Feeling only slightly more relieved, Kathy followed him into the living room and waited until both men were sitting before perching on the sofa and looking at them both expectantly.
After a silent pause, Severus gestured for the Headmaster to take up the story.
“First Mrs Ripley, let me welcome you to Hogwarts, I am Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster of this fine establishment and of course, you already know Severus.
Please do not take offence at what I am about to tell you, it is not meant as such. You are what is known in our world as a Leech.”
Kathy’s face fell, her eyes dulled and her lips set into a thin line. It was obvious she felt insulted.
“Please Mrs Ripley hear me out, although not the most pleasant of titles, it really does sound much worse than it actually is. Leechers are extremely rare, even more unusual is that one will survive past infancy. You have entered adulthood, defying nature by doing so, even more so in that you managed to reproduce, have children. Leechers are normally frowned on in our society because of the risk you place on us.”
“That’s stupid, you make me sound like an animal. I’ve never even been here before, so how can I be dangerous?”
“Your strength, your power, comes from others. Anything that lives, you can draw from, be they human, animal, or vegetable.”
Kathy narrowed her eyes. “Are you telling me that I can get some kind of power from touching a cabbage, because it sounds utterly ridiculous.”
Albus smiled briefly. “In a way I suppose I am. Were you to have contact with a witch or wizard, skin-to-skin contact, you would absorb his or her power, his energy into yourself. The same applies to none magical human contact, but because they do not have any magical signature, you would merely exhaust their personal energy, thus leaving them drained, extremely fatigued.”
“Fati what?”
“Overly tired. Prolonged exposure and they might possibly die. Likewise with magical folk. You personally are not a witch, but you have the ability to draw magic from another being, take it within yourself and use it for a time. The witch or wizard you come into contact with would be unable to draw on their resources for anything from several hours, to days, even weeks until they recuperated. Hence the reason your kind are referred to as Leeches. Because you are able to leech a concentration of power and energy from another, in the world of magic, your ability is catastrophic to us.”
“And you expect me to believe all that? I’ve never heard such cock-and-bull in all my born days. Now if you don’t mind, I’d like to leave. Mr Prince… Snape, whatever your name is, thank you for getting me away from those men, I’m grateful for it, but I’m not sitting here and listening to a load of drivel about leeching and powers and stuff. I believe you’re magic, I had a friend once who could do… things, but I don’t want to hear any more.”
Severus could see the Headmaster was at a bit of a loss and knew it was going to be down to him, again, to offer further explanations. “Mrs Ripley, I… “
“Kathy. You can call me Kathy.”
“Fine, Kathy. I know how far fetched this all must sound to you, and…”
“Far fetched? It sounds like you’ve eaten a bloody storybook and swallowed every ruddy word. You really expect me to believe all this rot. I weren’t born on a banana boat.”
Severus was losing patience. He jumped to his feet and scowled down at her. “Actually you were born on a dairy farm, I doubt you even know what a banana is, and it doesn’t really matter whether you believe it or not, it does not alter the truth of the situation. You are a Leech, you are one in the future, you are one now, and now is where you will stay. You wish to leave this castle, go ahead, though where you will go I have no idea. You no longer have a home or a family. You are alone Mrs Ripley, other than us you have no one.” As soon as the words left his mouth, Severus wished he could take them back. Nevertheless, the truth had to be said, and flowering it would not make it any better.
Kathy slumped, her eyes filled again with fresh tears. “It can’t be the truth. It just can’t.”
The two wizards allowed her to cry for a while, admonishing looks firing from Albus to Severus and returned with equal force, then they carefully explained to her the nature of a Leech. They listened to Kathy’s, and to a lesser extent Severus’, tales of her years at the orphanage, her friendship with a boy called Tom Riddle, who Kathy still referred to as Tomtom. Her distress at losing him to another world he’d told her a little about. She told about meeting her husband, their two little girls, and the ordeal of losing them to the masked raiders that forced their way into their home one night.
She tried, through choking tears and racking sobs, to tell them about how she was kept in a small, cold room, about the men that would visit her regularly, hurt her and do unspeakable things to her, but that something would happen to them, how they always seemed to feel weak and she would feel stronger, even though she’d been through ordeal after ordeal with them.
Severus did his best to explain the time turner to her, while Albus explained about an evil Dark Lord and his followers known as ‘Death Eaters’.
For most of the day they sat in her rooms, questions and answers a constant.
When several elves appeared with food and drinks, Kathy watched them warily, but was not surprised by them. She’d already encountered a couple of them when she was held prisoner, and even then she vaguely remembered Tomtom mentioning them once. One had even dared to bring her a small bottle of something which helped eased her pain some.
Occasional muted voices would drift in from the corridors outside the rooms and Kathy would turn her head when she heard the excited chatter of children.
So far she did not know the real name of this Lord Voldemort, only that he was evil, planned to rule the wizarding world, and had no qualms about killing those he felt stood in his way.
