Harry sullenly made his way down to the train. He really wasn’t looking forward to going back to the Dursley’s; not after he came so close to never seeing them again. “Cheer up mate,” Ron smiled. “Remember what your dad said. He was going to try and arrange it so you’ll stay with me for a bit this summer.”
“Yeah,” Harry sighed, feeling slightly better at that. His Aunt and Uncle would most likely be thrilled to be rid of him earlier than usual.
“I could ask dad to try and get tickets to the Quiddich World Cup. He can usually get them through work.”
Harry smiled as he headed down the long narrow walkway of the Hogwarts Express. He’d never seen a quiddich game other than the ones that were played at school. It would be great to see professional teams play.
He stopped at the last compartment only to find it wasn’t empty. Sitting casually in the corner with his legs crossed was a dark haired wizard wearing a sleeveless powder blue robe with a deep v neck. “Dad!” Harry cried out in excitement and confusion. “What are you doing on the train?”
James grinned up at the three kids. “I told you I would fix everything didn’t I?”
“You mean you’re going back to the Dursley’s with me?”
James nodded. “I can’t stay of course, but I can definitely lay down the law. They’re going to start treating you right or they’re going to be cockroaches again, and this time I won’t miss.”
Harry didn’t understand the cockroach comment, but he suddenly felt a lot better about going back. The three took their seats and the train headed out. “How did you get on the train though?” Hermione asked.
“My own little secret,” James winked and chuckled.
“Where’s Sirius?” Harry asked, suddenly thinking about his godfather.
“Somewhere safe,” James answered. “I can’t really say much more than that. Oh, and that reminds me.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a letter, handing it to Harry. “Since things were a little rushed the other night he asked me to give you this.”
Harry took the letter and read it, suddenly feeling on top of the world. He had a family now that was looking after him. It felt strange but incredible. “I talked to Dumbledore the morning after…” Harry said as he tucked the letter from Sirius into his own pocket.
“Oh?” James raised an eyebrow. Dumbledore was a sore subject, but he wasn’t going to yell at Harry if he wanted to talk about the older wizard.
“Yeah,” Harry sighed. “He apologized and explained everything. He said he did what he thought was best.”
“I see,” James bit his lip and stared quietly out the window. He wasn’t going to badmouth Dumbledore; he thought he was rather above that. He was going to let Harry come to his own conclusions about the man.
“I’m still angry with him. I mean… All that I went through with the Dursley’s… None of it was necessary. He said you were unstable, but you’re my father! He could’ve put us somewhere safe together. I think he was doing what was best for him.”
James shook his head and chuckled, which caused Harry to cock his head in confusion. “What’s so funny?” he asked, getting a little upset.
“A lot of things really. You’re learning, which is good. How can I best explain Albus Dumbledore to you…? He isn’t a bad man. I’m still angry with him myself, but I’ll probably forgive him eventually. He just over thinks things. Sometimes he doesn’t see things for what they are because he’s always trying to read between the lines.”
Harry nodded in understanding. He supposed he had a lot to learn. “Can you tell us stories about when you were in school?” he asked, wanting to get off the subject of Dumbledore and actually get to know his own father.
James obliged and spent the rest of the train ride talking about the tricks he used to pull. By the time the train came to a stop again everyone’s sides hurt. It seemed that everyone who had talked about what a cheeky trickster his father was hadn’t been exaggerating.
Harry started to wonder what his dad was going to do when the train pulled into the station. Was he going to walk up to the Dursley’s in a crowded train station and yell at them? He wordlessly stood up to grab his trunk, and got his answer when he turned back around.
Hermione was staring open mouthed at the seat where a black cat sat with icy blue eyes. “What?” Harry asked her, wondering why she found it so amazing that his dad was now a cat. They had found out that he and his friends were unregistered animagi. Of course previously he had been a large panther, but Harry figured he just shrunk himself or something.
“First white fire, and now a second form,” she answered.
“So?” Harry asked, not sure why either one was a big deal.
“Harry, don’t you get it? He conjured white fire that night with the dementors.”
“I know. I was there.”
“Harry, the only wizard known to be powerful enough to conjure white fire was Merlin. And animagi only have one form. They can’t change that form in any way.”
Harry stared down at the cat in awe. His father returned his gaze looking rather smug. Everyone was always talking about how great his father was, but it seemed there was much more to this man than anyone knew.
“So you’re plan is to come home with me as a cat?” Harry asked, shuffling what Hermione had said to the back of his mind.
The cat meowed and hopped off of the seat to stand beside him. Harry shrugged and bid his friends goodbye. His dad followed him off the train and out into the crowd. A lot of superstitious people avoided him so they wouldn’t have a black cat crossing their paths.
It wasn’t hard to spot the Dursley’s. Uncle Vernon stuck out like a sore thumb. “There you are boy,” he growled. “Come on, let’s go.”
Then he spotted the cat following Harry. “What is that?” he asked. “Don’t tell me you up and decided to get another pet. We’ve already let you have that bird, that’s enough.”
“It’s a present for Dudley,” Harry thought quickly.
Uncle Vernon raised his brow suspiciously. Harry had never gotten a present for Dudley before. “Really,” Harry insisted, trying not to laugh. “He’s a stray, and I thought Dudley might want a pet too.”
“Does it do tricks?” Uncle Vernon asked, trying to find the catch.
Harry shook his head. “It’s just a cat.”
Uncle Vernon grunted and headed back to the car. The cat leapt up onto Harry’s shoulders, and he winced as sharp claws dug into his skin. He kept quiet as he followed his uncle out to the car, and during the ride home. He had to keep from smiling as he thought about what his dad was going to do.
James however, lay on the back seat and shamelessly licked himself. Harry crinkled his nose up and sighed. If his dad was just playing the part, there were other things he could’ve done.
A million emotions were running through Harry when they finally pulled into the driveway. He got out and grabbed his trunk. James just trotted into the house. “A kitty!” Dudley called out when he saw him. He licked his piggy lips and lunged to grab the animal. James whirled around just in time and nailed him on the face.
Dudley howled in pain and ran to his mother. “Is this your idea of a joke?” Uncle Vernon barked. His eyes went wide as the cat turned into a man.
Petunia came marching in and stopped dead with a high pitched scream. “Oh by the way, actually, I can do lots of tricks,” James grinned evilly.
“You!” Vernon growled. “You’re supposed to be dead.” His face reflected both fear and anger.
James just shrugged. “Your point….?”
“We’ve been taking care of your son, that’s the point! And where were you?”
“Pretending to not exist,” James answered calmly.
“Funny, I had to do that a lot,” Harry chimed in.
James patted his son on the shoulder. “Yes, I’ve heard quite a lot about your home life.”
Both Vernon and Petunia were looking scared now. Dealing with Harry was one thing, but now they had a full grown wizard with a nasty temper in their living room. “We took excellent care of your son!” Vernon insisted.
“How stupid do I look?” James asked with a raised eyebrow.
Vernon and Petunia just looked at each other. “I assume you’re taking him then,” Vernon spoke softly.
“No.” James answered, which made the Dursleys’ jaws practically drop. “I have a few things I have to do.”
“We took him in when we thought you were dead,” Vernon spoke up. “Now that the boy has some place else to go…”
One sharp look from James shut him up quickly. “You’re going to keep him for a month or so, and you’re going to quit whining about it.” He turned to Harry with a soft smile. “Harry, keep me posted. If I don’t hear from you in two weeks I’ll return with bug spray.”
He gave the Dursley’s an evil grin before hugging Harry and leaving. Harry watched his dad leave with a wide grin. This was going to be a great summer.

A/N: Well, he may have to go back to the Dursley’s, but at least they won’t bother him. And yes, Snape is on James’ shit list because of how he was treating Harry. For those of you who have been patiently waiting for Lucius and James to have a reunion, you’re just gonna love the next chapter J
