Chapter 8: No More Secrets
As I looked into her beautiful blue eyes and felt the soft skin of her cheek, what was left of my anger melted away. I had missed being close to her too much to waste precious moments.
After all, I must remember she is still young. Even the most intelligent of us have succumbed to stupidity at some point in our younger years.
I cupped her face with my hand as I wrapped my other arm around her slim waist, pulling her closer to me. Her expression was uncertain, but trusting. I leaned in and gently brushed my lips against hers, keeping myself under strict control as I awaited her encouragement or refusal. After a moment, she pressed her lips firmly against mine, and I felt her arms around my neck. I held her close with both arms and gave in to my desire as our kiss turned passionate. I could tell that she was innocent by the hesitant, testing way she kissed me. Her innocence only made me more fiercely protective of her, and I kept a tight reign on my ardor. I took my time in exploring her mouth with my tongue until she made a soft, quiet sound of arousal. I should have ended with that, but I gave in as another soft moan and the feel of her hands gliding over my chest through my robes spurred me on. I shed my billowy outer robes, allowing her hands to run freely over my black silk shirt as I slowly trailed kisses down her neck.

I had died and gone to heaven. That was the only explanation for what Severus was doing to me, it felt that good. I had never been kissed like this before, and it was making me hotter by the minute. I instinctively pressed my body closer to his as I ran my hands over the silk of his shirt. When his kisses moved to my neck, I felt the first flutter of indecision, then it was made worse when I felt his hands glide slowly down my back. I shivered as I felt a warm hand on my hip, but it wasn’t a good thing. Though common sense and logic told me Severus would never harm me, I soon found myself struggling to repress flashbacks of memories I thought were forgotten
“Severus… stop.”
He immediately stopped and looked at me with concern. He must have seen the fear in my eyes because he would have stepped away from me completely if I hadn’t been holding onto him. I hurried to reassure him, knowing he would be thinking he had done something wrong.
“Don’t let go of me, please. It’s nothing you’ve done, its… memories.”
He understood and hugged me tightly.
“I apologize, I should have taken things slower.”
“It’s alright, you couldn’t have known I would react this way. I was actually really enjoying myself up to a moment ago.”
He softly kissed my forehead and asked,
“Can I help in any way?”
“I don’t know. Maybe.”
“I will have to see to know how to help.”
I nodded and took a deep breath, laying my head on his chest as he held me secure in his arms. I wasn’t sure if I could let him see, since I would be seeing those memories again myself. I didn’t want to keep any secrets from him though, so I was willing to try. I focused on breathing deeply, relaxing, and opening my mind for him. He waited for several minutes to make sure I was completely relaxed, then gently began to probe. I braced myself, and let the memories come.

I focused very carefully on being gentle as Viper began to let the memories come. Holding onto her tightly to help her feel as secure as I could, I began to look.
She was sixteen, an intelligent beautiful, and friendly freshman at an American school of wizardry. She was popular, but caught the attention of one boy in particular. He was three years older, tall and handsome, very popular with the girls. He noticed Viper several weeks into the school year and began to pay more attention to her than to the other girls. She was flattered of course, and several weeks later they began dating.
All was well at first. He complimented her constantly, showered her with gifts, and treated her like a queen. Two months later, things began to change. He became jealous and domineering, isolating her from her friends as his temper became increasingly volatile.
It all came to a head three months into the relationship, when he stopped taking no for an answer. Instead of respecting her boundaries, he would ignore her pleas and hold her down, pushing a little further every time, until –
At this point, I was shoved violently out of viper’s mind. I staggered back against the wall, still holding her tightly. When I was able to center myself, I discovered she was shaking uncontrollably, her face buried in my chest. I held her close, stroking her hair and talking softly about the most mundane things, doing my best to calm her down.
How could any man have treated her in such a manner? It is unspeakable! She is far too precious to be tormented this way…
It took her a long while to calm down, but I waited patiently. I knew all too well what these kinds of scars could do to a person. Kissing her temple softly, I caressed her face and waited for her to look at me. When she did, the look in her eyes almost killed me. She was trying so hard to be brave, and the trust she had in me was there, but so was the fear that bastard had implanted years ago. I kissed her softly and said,
“The good news is, I can help you with what I’ve seen. I know it is beyond difficult for you to face those memories, and now that I have seen them I can pull them out and place them in the pensieve myself. The bad news is, I can only do that with the ones I have seen.”
She nodded wordlessly, understanding that she would need to face the final memories at some point, but not until she was ready.

I spent all of the next morning in my dorm asleep. Severus had kept me up well past midnight, working with me to get as many of my troubled memories out as we could. I felt a lot better now, but I was exhausted. I finally dragged myself out of bed at half past noon, thankful that so far I had been able to avoid running into anyone in the Slytherin dorms, as I was sure that by now the whole school had heard something about the fight at Hogsmeade. I sat on the edge of my bed for a few minutes, pondering what to do with my afternoon. On a whim, I knelt down and pulled a hard black case out from under my bed. Inside was my old acoustic guitar, which I hadn’t even looked at in years. I remembered how I used to love to play it, and decided today was as good as any day to start again.
Not being hungry, I skipped lunch and went ahead to the entrance hall, intending to spend my afternoon by the lake on the snow covered lawns. Before I made it out the door I heard someone shouting my name, and turned to find Harry running toward me. I braced myself for a fight, unsure what to expect after everything that happened yesterday. To my surprise, he simply looked concerned.
“Are you alright? Hermione and I got worried when you didn’t show up for breakfast. Snape didn’t kill you did he?”
I rolled my eyes with a small smile.
“No Harry, obviously he didn’t kill me since I’m here talking to you right now. Actually, I am surprised you aren’t trying to kill me considering everything that went on yesterday.”
Harry walked the rest of the way to the lake with me as we talked. He looked sad, but his response was shockingly mature.
“Don’t get me wrong Viper, Ron was one of my best friends and so was Ginny. However, I don’t agree with the way either of them behaved. Mind you, I don’t care for Snape one bit, but Ron was wrong to try to harm you like that. As for Ginny, I have no idea what she thought she was doing with Veritaserum. I still count them as my friends, but I think they got what was coming to them for the things they did.”
I nodded, relieved that at least one of my friends didn’t hate me.
“How’s Hermione taking everything?”
“She feels much the same as I do about Ron and Ginny, but she is much angrier at them. She was worried about you as I was and has no hard feelings toward you. Actually, she revealed something rather shocking last night and gave me permission to tell you if she didn’t see you first.”
I looked at him curiously as we used our wands to clear the snow from a spot by the lake and cast warming hexes around us.
“What could Hermione of all people possibly say that would be more shocking than my revelation yesterday?”
“Well, you know how we found out she’s not a virgin?”
“Yeah, so?”
“It’s because she’s been doing Draco Malfoy for the last 8 months.”
I stopped what I was doing and looked at him in disbelief. He grinned and said,
“Told ya.”
“No way! You mean to tell me that Draco, Slytherin’s prince, has been seeing Hermione, the Gryffindor know it all since before I got here and he never told me?”
He laughed at me,
“Well did you ever tell him about Snape?”
“No, but that’s different.”
“How is that any different?”
“It’s only been a week, not 8 freaking months.”
Harry said nothing, just sat there and stared at me for a few moments. Then he shook his head and said,
“I had no idea you were actually seeing that… never mind. Let’s just keep things on a need to know basis only alright? I won’t say a word to anyone.”
He got up to leave as I grinned at him and agreed. As he walked off I began tuning my guitar, mentally going through all the songs I used to know. I relaxed into the moment and began playing one of my favorites by Seether, called Broken. I let go of everything else and lost myself in the music. When I had played the song through a few times and was satisfied that I still played well, I went back to the school. Checking the time, I saw that I had just enough time to get to the dungeons for my detention with Severus at four.

I looked up from the papers on my desk as Viper walked in. I raised an eyebrow at the muggle instrument she carried with her, and then went on grading papers. She waited quietly for me to finish, then we moved the student desks aside in comfortable silence, preparing for practice in Occlumency and Ligilimency.
Not that there is much more I can teach her. She has been doing remarkably well and is quite advanced already.
After a predictably flawless practice in which we both worked very hard, I made a suggestion as we tidied the room.
“Would you care to learn other powers of the mind? I believe you would do quite well with mind to mind communication.”
She gave me one of her enticing smiles and said,
“Anything you want to teach me, I want to learn.”
I smirked at her for a minute before replying,
“You do realize that can be taken in so many inappropriate directions.”
She blushed an appealing shade of pink and ignored my comment. I laughed and sent her on her way with a long, smoldering kiss. Unfortunately for me, that set my mind on one track I would not be following anytime soon, so I waited until she was gone and then with an irritated growl directed at myself, I departed to my private chambers for a cold shower.

I stopped by the dorms to drop off my guitar and get a quick shower before dinner. I happened to run into Draco on the way to dinner and snagged his attention with a quick wave. He sidled up to me in the hall and quietly muttered,
“You’ve got some explaining to do.”
I grinned and replied,
“And so do you.”
He gave me a look of confusion, which I ignored with a smile until we were seated in the great hall. At the end of the table away from the others, we waited for dinner to start. Already there were quiet whispers floating around, and a few of the other students were glancing at me curiously. Thankfully, most of the attention was directed at Harry and Hermione, the third piece of the golden trio noticeably absent. Everyone fell silent as Dumbledore stood up, and I looked nervously at Severus. His expression was grim, but more annoyed than anything else. He acknowledged me with a nearly imperceptible nod, and my attention was drawn back to Dumbledore as he began to speak with a very grim countenance.
“My dear students, I am sure many of you have noticed the absence of Ronald and Ginny Weasley today. It is my unfortunate duty to inform you all that both students have been expelled.”
He paused here and the students were in an uproar. The Gryffindors were indignant, the Slytherins were gleeful and jeering, and everywhere there was wild speculation already abounding. I clenched my jaw as Draco and I exchanged a glance, and then turned our attention back to Dumbledore as several of the professors restored order to the hall. When all was quiet, he continued sternly,
“Let me take this opportune time to remind you all of a few things. Violent behavior, underage drinking, and imbibing of illegal substances will in no manner be tolerated at this institution. This is your only warning.”
His eyes rested on me as he finished speaking, and then dinner was begun as he took his place at the staff table. Immediately rumors, gossip, and assumptions began to fly among the houses. Many were making me the obvious subject, not bothering to hide their stares. Draco and I ignored them and began to eat as if nothing had happened. He spoke in a low voice,
“Viper what the bloody hell happened in Hogsmeade?”
I began by telling him of the ill fated trip to the shrieking shack. He contained his surprise well as I told him of Ginny and the serum, and then his amusement as I gave him full disclosure of the game that followed, Hesitating when I came to the part that had started all the trouble. He was confused at my reluctance, saying,
“Who could you like that would cause such madness? It’s not me is it?”
He looked worried for a moment and I couldn’t help smirking as I said,
“No Draco, not you.”
He was caught somewhere between relief and arrogance as he demanded,
“Well who then?”
“You have to promise not to breathe a word to anyone.”
“Of course I won’t. I don’t betray my true friends.”
I leaned in close to his ear and whispered,
“Professor Snape…”
That was the first time I ever saw Draco lose his composure, though he picked it up again so quickly that you would have missed it if you blinked.
“Are you bloody mad?”
I barely kept a straight face as I replied nonchalantly,
“As mad as you are for dating Hermione Granger.”
That was the second time Draco ever lost his composure, spluttering on his drink. I gave myself a silent pat on the back as I finished my meal. We agreed to talk again later when we weren’t surrounded by gossips, and when the meal was done I left to meet Severus for another ‘detention’.
This time when he cast the protective charms, it was for a different reason. He pulled me into his lap behind his desk and we had a serious conversation about the dangers of our relationship. He was uneasy that Harry and Hermione knew, but trusted my judgment when I told him I believed they would keep our secret. He was unconcerned about Draco, but we both agreed that no one else needed to find out. For a long time afterward, he just held me in silence, now and then kissing me tenderly.

As I held my precious young woman in my arms, I felt truly at peace for the first time that I could remember. I just hoped to Merlin that this would last. After enjoying several hours of her company during which I learned much about her plans for a future as a dragon rider and what that career entailed, I gave her one last kiss and sent her on her way. I lay in bed afterward and pondered what I had learned. Assuming she stayed with her choice of occupation, she would basically become a missionary soldier for hire, travelling all over the world on various operations.
I find the idea objectionable, but there is no reason to make anything of it. It remains to be seen whether or not she will hang about for long anyway.
With that final rather sullen thought, I allowed myself to drift to sleep.
