A/N: I know a lot of you have been waiting for this chapter...
Two days after Harry had visited the Room of Requirement, Harry had finally given in and taken away the old coat of Draco’s. Lily had cried buckets when Harry told her she couldn’t have it any longer and it took him half the night to get her to sleep without it. Harry felt rotten about it but he knew that it wasn’t doing her any good to cling to it and he honestly couldn’t bear to have it around any longer. After finally getting Lily to sleep, Harry decided to forgo the papers he had to grade and get some sleep himself. It was already late and he was tired.
It didn’t take him more than a few minutes to get to sleep. When he dreamed though he dreamed of a beautiful boy with pale skin and blonde hair. He remembered intelligent grey eyes and a merciless yet talented tongue.
Harry woke up with a bit of alarm to hissing all around his room. Must hurry! Master needs help! Hurry! Save the Master! Harry grabbed his glasses and quickly put them on as he pulled out his wand and looked around the room. He saw dozens of snakes on his floor and on his furniture. He was about to demand how they’d gotten into his room when they all started hissing again. Hurry!
Despite his better judgment, Harry had never been able to turn down a plea for help and that was exactly what these snakes were doing. He quickly dressed and followed the stream of snakes out of his room and into the halls of Hogwarts. He glanced outside and saw that snow was steadily falling from the black sky and was starting to blanket out the grass on the ground. The snakes hissed at him again when he slowed and he quickly turned his attention back to where they were going. He noticed how small all the snakes were and soon realized how they’d gotten into his room when they slipped through the bottom and center cracks between the large double doors in the main hall. He slipped outside and conjured a coat for himself without pausing.
“Where are we going?” he asked as he lit his wand to better follow the snakes as they quickly slithered through the snowy grass. They were heading straight for the Forbidden Forest and Harry couldn’t help the growing feeling of trepidation. The last time he’d followed a trail of animals into that forest he’d nearly been eaten by giant spiders.
To help Master.
Harry rolled his eyes. It seemed like that first snake was not the only one that was incredibly unhelpful. All of these seemed to be as well. He quickly entered the forest and was instantly glad at the reduction in snowfall. His pants were already soaked through from the melted snow and he’d rather not trudge through it as it built up.
It seemed like it took forever for Harry to spot where it was the snakes were leading him. When he did spot it though, he knew without a doubt that was where they were taking him. The clearing at the bottom of the hill was already filling with snow and the waterfall was now the only part of the nearby river not frozen over. Even the large tree growing in the clearing had ice hanging from it. Harry frowned and took a closer look at the strange sight. He soon realized what he thought was the sparkle of ice was actually countless silver snake charms hanging from the tree branches. Hurry, Potter! The snakes hissed. Harry gave a start at the way they’d addressed him and looked over to see them all slithering into a cave on the other cliff that made up the small valley.
How on Earth had they known his name? Let alone his last name? Harry shook his head some and carefully climbed down the sharp incline. The snow in the clearing was already up to his midcalf so it was difficult to walk in. He trudged slowly across the clearing, ignoring the snakes that were still telling him to hurry. How had those damned serpents moved so fast in this sort of snow anyway? It didn’t seem possible… but then again, Harry lived in a world full of not possible so he shrugged it off.
Harry was somewhat out of breath when he finally managed to cross the clearing and climb up to look into the cave the snakes had all gone inside. His eyes widened and his heart skipped several beats at what he saw. At first he thought it was a giant snake when he saw the thick coils of white scales. But then he followed the coils with his eyes and saw the very human torso attached to it.
Harry’s lip trembled a little as he saw a painfully thin and bare chest covered in scrapes and small cuts moving far too slowly. Once perfectly manicured nails were jagged and uneven where they were clutching thin arms in a white knuckled grip. Nearly white blonde hair was long, dirty, and tangled in nearby roots and dirt. Lips that Harry remembered being quirked in a smirk far too often were blue tinged and slightly parted, as if struggling to pull air in.
Harry felt tears well up in his eyes and his fingers tightened around the root he’d used to pull himself up. “Draco…” It was barely a whisper and it actually hurt to say but Harry couldn’t stop himself. He knew that face far too well. He didn’t understand what was going on but seeing the snakes move to cover Draco’s strangely changed body helped to bring Harry back to the present.
Hurry!
Harry swallowed hard and pulled himself fully into the small cave. It was freezing out and Draco only had the cold-blooded snakes to keep him warm. The fact that he wasn’t even shivering was a terrible sign. Harry quickly conjured a fire and several blankets to drop over Draco’s still form. Harry muttered a quick warming spell as well though he knew he wasn’t particularly good at them. Still, it took most of the blueness out of Draco’s lips and fingertips.
As the temperature in the cave slowly warmed, Harry moved to sit beside Draco’s head. His hand shook some as he brushed Draco’s hair back and untangled it from the nearby roots and dead foliage. Without meaning to, Harry’s eyes traveled the parts of Draco’s form that poked out from under the blankets. It was all white snake coils. It had to be at least six feet of nothing but powerful muscle wrapped in scales. Absently, Harry conjured another blanket to cover what didn’t fit under the blankets that he’d already made.
He knew he would have to wait until Draco woke up to get answers as to what was going on and even how Draco could still be alive. But that didn’t stop Harry from looking around the cave for any clues. Harry spotted a few faded pieces of newspapers off in a corner and leaned closer to look at them better. All were articles on the Malfoy family, including Draco’s funeral announcement. A funeral that Harry hadn’t been able to bear going to. Apparently, almost nobody had gone but Harry wasn’t sure if that had been better or not for Draco’s parents. They were hardly seen at all for several years after Draco died. Harry glanced down at the familiar head in his lap and corrected his thought. After Draco had seemingly died.
Harry frowned and sat back. Why hadn’t Draco gone to his home? Told his parents he was still alive? They would have been happy to know their son was still alive. Everyone knew how devastated they’d been to lose their only son. Harry was suddenly furious at Draco for letting them all believe he was dead. What kind of selfish bastard did that sort of thing?! Who made their parents grieve for years over nothing?!
Something out of the corner of Harry’s eye suddenly interrupted Harry’s mental rant and he turned his head a little. He frowned as he reached over and picked up the small broken pocket watch laying very carefully on a flat rock. He recognized it instantly. He’d given it to Draco for Christmas, in secret, of course. It hadn’t been terribly expensive and Harry had almost not given it to Draco from embarrassment but he’d been surprised at how touched Draco had seemed to get it. He knew Draco had sent it back by owl after their rather nasty break up. Harry had thrown it out in a fit of anger even though he’d known why Draco had sent it back. The inscription on the inside meant Draco didn’t dare to keep around.
Seeing the damage it had suffered and yet how it was put so carefully on that rock, Harry felt guilty for throwing it out. He ran his thumb over the cracked glass as he stared down at the unmoving hands. It was stuck on 4:27. The inside lid of the watch was worn down some but Harry could still see his and Draco’s initials carved into it. It wouldn’t have been too telling unless someone like Voldemort had seen it. Harry looked back down at the pale face on his lap and brushed his fingers over a too thin cheek. Draco was still too cold.
After a minute of thought, Harry hissed at the snakes to get out from under the blanket. He put the watch down where he’d found it and quickly shed his clothes. He shivered in the below freezing temperatures before quickly getting under the blankets to press himself against Draco. He tried not to notice how the smooth human muscles morphed into a thick pillar of scale but it was hard. Harry shook himself mentally and wrapped his arms around Draco’s upper body to start rubbing against his pale cold skin. He had to warm Draco up or he would die out here. He could understand why the snakes had been so worried now.
Harry suddenly wondered if the coat that Lily had been given really had been given to her by Draco and stilled for a moment. If that were the case he’d given up what looked to be his only clothing to keep her warm after her dunk in the water. Harry started to rub Draco again. Had Draco saved Lily? It seemed impossible to not be the case what with this new information. How would he thank Draco after something like that? Was it enough to forgive him for allowing them to grieve for nearly two decades?
Harry sighed, knowing that he wouldn’t be able to answer those questions until he could talk to his ex. He pressed closer to Draco’s cold body and set his mind to just trying to warm the paler man to a more normal temperature.
