CHAPTER NINE
Albus grabbed hold of Severus and carried him over to the chair. After making sure he was alright he grabbed a small handful of floo powder and swept across to the fireplace. He threw the powder in and scared Madam Pomfrey half to death when his head appeared in her small office.
"Albus!" she exclaimed, placing her hand over her fluttering heart.
"I need to see you as soon as possible. Please use the floo network." He turned his head slightly and vanished from the flames.
Madam Pomfrey popped her head up and looked around the ward. Her patients could wait a few minutes. There were no emergencies and they would likely be asleep for another hour or so at any rate, she thought as she walked around the small desk, grabbed a handful of the powder and stepped into the fireplace. "Dumbledore's office," she said and whizzed along the network to land in his fireplace with the strangest sight before her. Dumbledore was practically flapping around trying to console someone who was wailing, half trying to destroy the room while half trying not to crumble to the floor. What was wrong with this... She looked closer, Severus!
"Quickly Poppy," Albus called across the room. Swiftly, Madam Pomfrey ran across and grabbed hold of Severus from the other side. A moment later, Severus howled and rolled his eyes into his head.
"Oh my, Albus! What happened to him?" Madam Pomfrey asked.
"Alas a deep sorrow Poppy. He was in love with Lily." Albus shook his head as they walked across the room and took the floo back to the hospital ward. "It is of utmost importance that no-one know he is here. Not until he has recovered."
Grabbing the curtain Madam Pomfrey pulled it around the end bed then helped Albus lay Severus on it. "I'll have him fixed up in no time Albus, well physically, emotionally, I don't know. I thought he had given up his quest to woo her when she married Potter."
"The heart wants what it often cannot have, Poppy." He placed a hand on her shoulder. "I'll call back around midnight. Till then." He dipped his head slightly and left.
The rest of the day was quite uneventful so he decided to pay Hagrid, his dear friend and grounds keeper a visit. It was always nice to catch up with the half giant who was as ungiantlike as you could get. Giants were aggressive, very tall and didn't like to live in close proximity to wizards. He was short in stature for a giant though he still loomed over everyone in the wizarding world. What he lacked in height he more than made up for in heart. He was a simple man who loved nothing more than to spend his time either drinking or looking after injured animals. To most the creatures that Hagrid looked after would be a rich mans dream. The cabin that he lived in was often filled with pieces of the exotic animals that got caught on branches from the school's forbidden forest like the unicorn hairs that dangled from the rafters. They would have made him wealthy enough to live in a more comfortable abode but to Hagrid the hairs were simply for binding injured animals. It pleased Albus to know that even in these troubled times there were still those that loved and so when he visited Hagrid it came as no surprise to find that he had a baby blast-ended skrewt in his company and that he was positively cooing over it. He enquired about his recent activities knowing that Hagrid was a great story teller when it came to his animals and made himself comfy on the giant sized sofa that took up most of the cabin. Hagrid told him about the trader that had stopped by who had several small creatures, all legal Hagrid emphasized, and how he had bought the baby, Sammy, from him. Albus chuckled at the thought of the skrewt being given such a soft name when the creature was anything but, and let Hagrid continue his tale.
After spending a couple of hours in Hagrid's company enjoying the fine whiskey and trying to hide the rock cakes that Hagrid had baked especially for him, Albus stood up. The night had moved in quickly and as he gazed out the window he hoped that Severus would be awake by the time he walked back up to the castle. "Well, thank you Hagrid it has been a pleasure as always but I must get back before Peeves destroys the school."
"Can I tempt ya with another cake professor?" Hagrid asked, pushing the plate of cakes towards him.
"Oh, I couldn't possibly, but thank you Hagrid," Albus said as he patted his belly and gave a crooked smile. With a wave of his hand he floated out the door and made his way across the field towards the school. It was a nice night, he thought as he glanced up at the sky, hoping that it was a good omen. There certainly hadn't been much of those lately. He grimaced and picked up the pace. By the time he reached the hospital wing he could hear shuffling feet coming from the small room at the end. To his surprise, Severus was sitting up in bed looking more himself while Madam Pomfrey was flitting around, fussing over him.
Madam Pomfrey twisted around. "Albus!" she squeaked rushing over to greet him. "I fear I may have given him too much calming draft," she said worriedly glancing back and forth between the two.
"Do not fear Poppy, he has likely moved onto denial," Albus said trying to appease her.
"Oh, well, yes possibly. I do hope so," she said biting her bottom lip.
Albus breezed across to stand by Severus' bed. "How are you feeling Severus?"
"Like I've been run over by the night bus. How long have I been here?"
"Since this afternoon. Do you know where you are?" Albus asked gently trying not to spook him.
Severus gazed at him questioningly. "Hogwarts," he said looking towards Madam Pomfrey.
Albus sat on the corner of the bed. "What do you remember Severus?"
Severus looked at the gentle eyes that bore into his. He could feel them searching his mind. He shook his head. "I was in a graveyard with the Dark Lord and his followers..."
"The Death Eaters," Albus coaxed.
Severus nodded. "We had been called." He rubbed his arm subconsciously, "We were all there. The Dark Lord was angry." He shook his head as though trying to rid it of a nasty thought. "He called me to him and forced me to kneel. His fingers, ice cold, penetrating, his eyes malicious..." Severus blanched.
"Please go on," Albus said meeting his eyes.
"Albus, perhaps you should go easy on him. He is still recovering." Madam Pomfrey sighed from the corner. She was clearly agitated, worried that her patient would worsen as she took in his beaded forehead and ashen face.
"It's alright Madam Pomfrey, I need to." Severus glanced at Albus then continued. "I was in excruciating pain, I could feel the darkness surrounding me when I heard Bellatrix giggling beside me. She projected herself into my mind with the help of the Dark Lord. A torture so befitting as she saw it. I believed I was a muggle and the thoughts in my head, Lily," - He stopped. Fear etched his face. - "she's alive?"
Albus looked down for a brief moment. "I'm afraid we were too late. They put their trust in the wrong friend."
"Sirius! I knew he would end up killing her if she stayed with that Potter," he spat out.
"Severus, I need to know what happened after you were tortured." Albus tried to refocus him but Severus was growing angry. Slowly, under his breath, Albus began to chant. It was a soft lull that calmed the air around them and soothed the skin. He could see Severus begin to ease off a little and gave him a gentle nudge. "After?"
Severus' eyes went blank. "They taunted me with her death before leaving me in the graveyard. I heard speak of the Potters before they fled. The next thing I knew I was encased in something hairy but then nothing, till now."
"Thank you Severus, you have been most helpful. Now, it has been a long night, get some sleep." Albus waved for Madam Pomfrey to bring Severus the chocolate and small sleeping tincture, and as he watched Severus take a bite from the chocolate he knew he had to pay one more visit to Hagrid.
