Chapter 9. The Promise
For the first time in days Snape was able to leave the dungeons and have a decent meal within the Great Hall, he’d been hiding out and trying his best to avoid Celes since the kiss in the corridor. The intense contact between the two was amazingly powerful, far too powerful for his liking.
He assumed they would interact as little as possible, just enough to fulfill the requirements of the Marriage Law and then would go about avoiding one another as they normally did. He had not intended for her to feel any sort of attraction to him, let alone act on those feelings. He’d only loved one woman in all his life, and even after she’d chosen that imbecile over him he knew his feelings hadn’t changed.
The day Lily had begun dating Potter was the day Severus made a solemn promise to himself, a promise that he would never love anyone but Lily Evans. The carefully constructed wall he’d placed around himself was supposed to make keeping that promise easy, but Celes was persistent in trying to tear it down.
He’d just have to set up some more defenses and perhaps even some ground rules, no more kissing for one! The woman’s lips were inescapable once she’d locked them on, he’d have to avoid that in the future.
Before he could get too much further along in mentally ticking off rules however, the memory of that kiss took hold and before long thoughts of defenses and rules were replaced by soft lips and the feel of his hand against the curve of her back.
She really had felt good pressed against his chest, but was that wrong? Was it breaking his promise to Lily if he enjoyed the way Celes felt? He didn’t love her, in fact she frequently infuriated him. So if it’s not love it isn’t wrong…..
The woman he’d loved since the moment they met as shy little children chose another over him, and for over 20 years he had repressed all sexual urges because of that love. He’d put himself in mortal danger, lied, murdered, and even protected a boy he detested—all for Lily…..all for someone that had never returned his feelings….
No, it wasn’t wrong to take some good from this marriage….
He finished his breakfast and left the Great Hall, determined to finish out the last day of the school term with no more thoughts about broken promises.

Celes sat in the small dress shop watching the seamstresses as they hemmed up dresses, adjusted bust widths, and scurried about after fabric samples. Ordinarily she would have found the hustle and bustle of the little store fascinating to watch, but she couldn’t get her mind off of Snape. He’d been avoiding her for days now, and she couldn’t figure out what she did wrong. She kissed him yes, but he enjoyed it! He pulled her closer, wasn’t that a sign she was doing something right?
So then why was he acting this way? She sighed in utter defeat, trying to understand the man was giving her a headache.
“Feeling alright there deary?”
A skinny stick of a woman was standing over her, her bony face was bordering on looking worried though one could hardly tell with all the makeup plastered on. She was wearing bright yellow robes, and neon multicolored bangles covered her boney arms and neck. Celes wondered briefly to herself how someone with such a terrible fashion sense could possibly secure a job in a dress shop, but realizing how cruel the thought was she quickly pushed it from her mind and tried to smile warmly.
“Ah yes I’m alright, wedding day jitters and all!”
“Oh that’s right, Mrs. Warren isn’t it? Yes you’re here to pick up your dress for the big day tomorrow aren’t you? Oh how exciting! You’re going to make such a lovely bride you are! Come this way sweetie I’ve got the dress right over here!”
And without batting an eye or even stopping to take a breath from her endless prattling, the seamstress began walking to the back of the store and into a little door Celes hadn’t noticed before.
The dress was fitted onto a mannequin, and the moment she laid eyes on it she could feel her heart flutter with excitement. It was exactly what she’d wanted! The dress was a simple A-Line style that fell to just above her feet, with a halter style strap that went around her neck and secured to the front of the dress. The entire thing was crafted from a cream colored silk fabric that shimmered softly and hung off the frame of the mannequin in one soft layer. Celes had considered wearing the traditional white, but the cream colored fabric really took her breath away the first time she saw it, so honestly anything white wouldn’t have stood much of a chance.
The dress cost way too much, but since this would be her one and only wedding, forced or not, she was determined to look her best.
‘I’d like to see him sneer at this! Though I doubt with all the blood rushing elsewhere he’ll be able to even remember how to sneer…’
She chuckled at her crass little thought involving his man parts, which turned into an even longer thought process involving the specifics of said man parts before she was brought back to reality by the seamstress clearing her throat.
“hmm? Oh sorry…lost in thought there…”
She flushed scarlet and grinned sheepishly at the woman who was looking at her as though she’d lost a few marbles. Honestly she MUST be crazy to be thinking about Snapes….
“Ahh it’s beautiful! Just what I wanted….I must say you do wonderful work Mrs.?”
The stick of a woman was still looking at her strangely and seemed to be contemplating whether or not to give this nutter her name before responding.
“Polly Pelly Peterson at your service deary, I do pride myself on pleasing the customers I do!”
“Well you’ve certainly pleased this one, but if you don’t mind I’d like to pay and make my way back to Hogwarts.”
“Ah yes of course lovey, right this way then and I’ll ring you up!”
Mrs. Peterson took out her wand, and with a quick flick of her boney wrist the dress was slipped off the mannequin and neatly pressed into a white dress bag. She flicked her wand again and the bag was levitating behind her as she made her way out of the room and towards the counter, Celes had to suppress a giggle as she watched the gangly old woman jut her hips from side to side while she walked. Such a strange woman Polly was, but she certainly did make a lovely dress!
Celes paid for the dress, all the while trying to hide a sickening feeling as she thought about how many months she’d have to work to replenish the empty Gringott’s Vault she now had. As beautiful as her wedding gown was going to be, she was now completely broke and until her next paycheck from Hogwarts she would be dependent on Severus. A shudder moved its way through her at the thought of depending on him for anything, let alone finances. How much did he actually have stored away? Would it be rude to ask him? He was going to be her husband after all….well that is if she could ever find him in the maze of the dungeons!
She sighed and shook her head at the thought of another break spent searching the corridors of that eerie place for him.
*************************************************************************************
As predicted she did find herself back in the dungeons, looking for the man she would unfortunately be tethered to in the morning. Regardless of the warm summer air permeating throughout the rest of the castle, the dungeon was as dank and cold as always. The distant sound of chattering and squeaks behind her forced her to stifle a frightened squeal and increase her pace until she soon found herself in front of Snape’s office. Rats! She hated rats more than anything, of course her future husband would have to sleep down here with rats! Before she could pout about it for very long a skittering shadow ran across her shoe and she found herself bursting inside and slamming the door behind her.
Snape looked up at the sound of his door slamming and raised an eyebrow in annoyance at the frightened girl clinging to it.
“I know you were taught that it’s rude to burst into a room without knocking…”
She stiffened at the sound of his voice and turned to face him with a blush of embarrassment playing across her cheeks.
“Sorry but….there’s rats the size of bludgers out there! Did you know?” She shivered at the thought of knashing yellow teeth, beady little eyes, and skinny pink tails.
He rolled his eyes and wondered for perhaps the millionth time why he was so unlucky to have been matched with such a silly girl.
She forced the images of rats out of her head and stepped a little closer to his desk, a look of worry on her face.
“Have you been hiding from me?”
He frowned and stared at her rather blankly for a moment before answering,
“I don’t hide from anyone Warren, no matter how snog crazy they might be.”
Her blush deepened,
“It’s Celes!”
“You know Celes you aren’t too old for detention, and if you keep finding the need to correct me I might just give you one.”
His voice was dangerously calm, and his dark eyes began to glimmer like those of a predator circling prey at the mention of detention.
She felt fear clench in her stomach as she wondered just what he meant by detention, but fear slowly began to mix with desire as those thoughts turned darker. She bit her bottom lip as she gazed down at the sturdy desk he was seated behind, and wondered how much activity the piece of furniture could withstand. Heat was beginning to spread from her stomach, down her hips, and into her knickers making them uncomfortably damp. She really must be a snog crazy witch if just the word detention conjured up images of Snape taking her harshly on top of his desk!
He watched her closely as her eyes moved over his desk, it was obvious that she was mulling over his threat with deep interest. He considered giving in and using his desk for unprofessional reasons, but the way her eyes were darkening with lust made him decide against it. She was far too willing to let him take her, and sending her out into the cold corridor would be much more amusing.
“Did you need something Celes? Or were you just planning to stare at my desk all night?”
His voice pulled her out of her thoughts which were quickly turning downright scandalous, she was surprised at how quickly her mind went to the gutter when Snape was involved. When exactly had her most hated Professor become so desirable?
“Umm…..so….so tomorrow…..”
She managed to stutter out as she fought to regain her composure and ignore the heat still pooling under her skirt.
“The Ministry Official should be here around 7…”
“Right…”
She was still blushing furiously, and looking at him expectantly.
“Celes…”
Her name left his mouth in a soft purr that made her shiver and fight for control not to tackle him right there.
“Y..yes?”
“Perhaps a cold shower would be a good idea.”
She almost collapsed from the embarrassment! Was he teasing her? Bastard!
She blinked furiously and stood there open mouthed and completely lost for words. Snape was obviously pleased at her reaction because his thin lips curled into a malicious smirk as he continued to watch her with that predatory glimmer.
There was no way she was going to skitter out the door like a scared little girl! Those days ended when she graduated, and she refused to give him the satisfaction. She closed her mouth, sauntered over to stand close to him behind his desk, and leaned down to his ear so he could feel her warm, sweet breath on his neck as she spoke.
“Such a pity you didn’t call me Warren, I was so looking forward to seeing what my punishment was going to be.”
Her tongue caressed the shell of his ear, and she smirked wickedly as she heard a guttural groan from the usually stoic Professor. Snape was a man just like any other, and no matter what cold wall he put up she knew that a few well selected words and the feel of a warm tongue on sensitive skin would always break him down to his baser instincts.
She left his office without looking back, content in knowing she’d made him want her just as much as she found herself wanting him.
I know I took a while to update but I've been having to study for finals so I couldn't get around to writing. This chapter is a little short I know, but stay tuned for the next chapter because of the wedding and the *wicked grin* wedding night...
