Hermione had been surprised to see Hedwig, Harry's owl, arrive at her hotel room's window sill but was relieved since she was worried about how to get Harry's birthday gift through customs. She knew he would love his gift, though before he opened it he was probably likely to think it was a book. In truth had she known him before Hogwarts she would've gotten him a book. It was only within the last year that she had become good at picking out gifts for friends and family, learning at the end of first year that life was more than just brains and smarts. It was about friendship and loyalty as well.
Currently Hermione lay on her bed daydreaming about Egypt. She was quite jealous of Ron being able to go there and was sure he was learning lots, though Paris didn't have a lack of history in witchcraft either.
Her eyes were about to close in sleep when she heard a tap on the window pane. Getting up she walked over to the window and opened it quickly seeing it was a Hogwarts' owl outside. She was sure it was the reply that she had been waiting for from professor McGonagall about the courses she had wanted to take this year. After relieving the owl of the letter and sending it off with a treat she sat on her bed, opened it and began reading:
Dear miss Granger,
Thank you for requesting guidance on which available courses to take this year. After much discussion with this head master and taking into consideration your grades the past two years we believe you are responsible enough to take all courses you were interested in. We realize that some courses overlap others and have an item that will assist you in getting to all your classes in time. However you must not tell anyone. When you arrive, come to see me in the headmaster's office a half hour past dinner. The password is wrigley gummies. Enclosed is the list of additional course books you will need for your classes. Please remember to have your parents sign the permission slip for your trip to Hogsmeade this year.
Yours Sincerely,
Professor M. McGonagall
Deputy Headmistress
Excited, falling back on the bed, wondering what the item could possibly be, she eventually drifted off to sleep.
Remus was studying Hermione through the slits of his eyes, while pretending to be asleep. The three students had woken him up a few minutes earlier with their talking. She had grown quite a bit since he last saw her and was turning into a young lady. He knew that by the time he and Severus could claim her as their mate and bond with her, she would be very beautiful. He felt the train slow down and thought they were close to Hogwarts as well, being that he wasn't sure how long he had slept.
The train came to a stop with a jolt, and distant thuds and bangs told him that luggage had fallen out of the racks. Then, without warning, all the lamps went out and there was nothing but total darkness. Remus' body tensed in awareness and pulled out his wand from his sleeve. He heard the students shuffling about and bumping into one another as they tried to figure out what might be going on. Remus had a suspicion as what was happening.
"Quiet!", he said suddenly, his voice hoarse and tired from sleep. None of them spoke.
Remus non-verbally summoned a handful of flames and there was a soft, crackling noise, and a shivering light filled the compartment.
"Stay where you are," he said in the same hoarse voice, and he got slowly to his feet with his handful of fire held out in front of him.
But the door slid slowly open before he could reach it.
Standing in the doorway, illuminated by the shivering flames in Remus' hand, was a cloaked figure that towered to the ceiling. Its face was completely hidden beneath its hood. All occupants of that compartment got a good look at the evil creature. All eyes darted downward, and what they saw made their stomach contract. There was a hand protruding from the cloak and it was glistening, grayish, slimy-looking, and scabbed, like something dead that had decayed in water.
But it was visible only for a split second. As though the creature beneath the cloak sensed Harry's gaze, the hand was suddenly withdrawn into the folds of its black cloak.
And then the thing beneath the hood, whatever it was, drew a long, slow, rattling breath, as though it were trying to suck something more than air from it
An intense cold swept over them all.
Remus saw Harry go rigid, fall out of his seat and start to twitch, and observed Hermione trembling as well. He stepped over Harry and walked toward the dementor and pulled out his wand. "None of us is hiding Sirius Black under our cloaks. Go."
But the dementor didn't move, so Remus muttered an Expecto Patronum and a silvery wolf shot out of his wand at it, and it turned around and glided away.
Remus then turned his attention to the children who were trying to get Harry to wake up.
Remus broke enormous slab of chocolate into pieces.
"Here," he said to Harry, handing him a particularly large piece. "Eat it. It'll help."
Harry took the chocolate but didn't eat it.
"What was that thing?" he asked Lupin.
"A dementor," said Remus, who was now giving chocolate to everyone else. "One of the dementors of Azkaban."
Everyone stared at him. Professor Lupin crumpled up the empty chocolate wrapper and put it in his pocket.
"Eat," he repeated. "It'll help. I need to speak to the driver, excuse me...
He strolled past Harry and disappeared into the corridor.
"It was horrible," said Neville, in a higher voice than usual. "Did YOU feel how cold it got when it came in?"
"I felt weird," said Ron, shifting his shoulders uncomfortably. "Like I'd never be cheerful again..."
Hermione, who was comforting Ginny, looked up as Professor Lupin had come back.
He paused as he entered, looked around, and said, with a small smile, "I haven't poisoned that chocolate, you know..."
She met his eyes and answered his unspoken question with a nod of her head, letting him know she was okay. She took a bite of chocolate and felt warmth spread suddenly to the tips of her fingers and toes.
"We'll be at Hogwarts in ten minutes," said Professor Lupin. "Are you all right, Harry?"
Hermione didn't pay attention to Harry's answer as she was blushing over Professor Lupin's wink of approval.
The door into the Great Hall stood open at the right; Hermione followed the crowd toward it, but had barely glimpsed the enchanted ceiling, which was black and cloudy tonight, when a voice called, "Potter! Granger! I want to see you both!"
Hermione and Harry turned around, surprised. Professor McGonagall, Transfiguration teacher and head of Gryffindor House, was calling over the heads of the crowd. She was a stern looking witch who wore her hair in a tight bun; her sharp eyes were framed with square spectacles. Hermione fought her way over to her with a feeling of confusion. She wondered if this was about the item for her classes, though she was supposed to meet Professor McGonagall after dinner.
"There's no need to look so worried - I just want a word in MY office," she told them. "Move along there, Weasley."
Ron stared as Professor McGonagall ushered Harry and Hermione away from the chattering crowd; they accompanied her across the entrance hall, up the marble staircase, and along a corridor.
Once they were in her office, a small room with a large, welcoming fire, Professor McGonagall motioned Harry and Hermione to sit down. She settled herself behind her desk and said abruptly, "Professor Lupin sent an owl ahead to say that you were taken ill on the train, Potter."
Hermione listened as Professor McGonagall and Madame Pomfrey fussed over Harry. She felt kind of sorry for him, knowing he was thinking about what Draco would say if he had to stay the night in the hospital wing.
Are you sure you feel all right, Potter?" Professor McGonagall said sharply.
"Yes, "said Harry.
"Very well. Kindly wait outside while I have a quick word with Miss Granger about her course schedule, then we can go down to the feast together."
Hermione watched as Harry left, then turned her attention back to Professor McGonagall. "Miss Granger, I know we had originally planned to meet after dinner, but the Headmaster has more pressing needs to see to afterwards, so I decided to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. Hold out your hand."
Hermione nearly bounced up and down in her seat with anticipation, knowing that it was the item the Professor had mentioned in the letter. She felt the coolness of metal and glass in her palm and looked down. It was small, two full gold rings, surrounded a miniature hourglass, and was connected to a light gold chain. It had an inscription on it that read "I mark the hours, every one, Nor have I yet outrun the Sun. My use and value, unto you, Are gauged by what you have to do."
Professor McGonagall smiled at Hermione's awed expression. "Pretty isn't it?
Hermione nodded, then looked up as Professor McGonagall cleared her throat. Seeing the serious expression on her face, Hermione straightened up in her seat, and paid attention as the older woman began to speak.
"As I wrote in your letter, it is important that you tell no one about this. The only ones that know are your teachers and Headmaster Dumbledore. This item is called a time turner. I will instruct you on its use in a moment. I want to express to you how much trust we place in you in allowing your use of this device. There were a few, uhh, professors who were against this, but as always, the Headmaster has the last say. In addition, you must never let anyone see you use this time turner. Above all Hermione", the professor stressed " never let yourself be seen by you. When you use this and go back in time, your other self will be there as well. Messing with time can be dangerous and seeing yourself will cause a consequence you don't want to imagine. Do you understand me Miss Granger?
"Yes professor", Hermione replied as she slid the chain over her head and hid the time turner just under the neck of her school robes.
"Well now, I believe Mr. Potter is waiting outside for us", Professor McGonagall said, standing up. "What do you say we go meet him and head down to the feast?"
Hermione agreed silently and happily followed the professor out the door.
Remus stood up as he was introduced as the new professor for Defence Against the Dark Arts. He nodded his head once in acknowledgment and smiled at Hermione when she waved at him.
"For Merlin sakes Remus, the girl is fourteen! Stop flirting." A voiced snarled mildly in his head.
"Now now Severus, she is our mate. I like it when she pays attention to me. You should try flirting a little bit. And be more nice to her. You know we have talked about this before"
"Yes, yes I know", Severus growled.
Remus changed the subject, "Any news on the whereabouts of Sirius yet?
Severus sighed, frustrated. "No information from any of my contacts. As if that isn't frustrating enough, these dementors that are going to be hanging around the school are worrying me, not only for Harry's sake but the other students as well."
Remus remained silent, but Severus knew he was just as worried.
Severus' concerned gaze fell on Hermione catching hers as she looked up. Taking a chance he smiled slightly at her.
Remus saw the interaction and Hermione's mild look of shock then she blushed and looked down.
Severus rolled his eyes when Remus patted his thigh in congratulations and heard his soft chuckle.
Hermione held the time turner in her hand, staring at it. She had a hard time falling asleep last night due to being so excited about the next day. Nee, who was happy to see Hermione, had been checking up on her every hour, had finally brought her a warm drink to help Hermione fall asleep.
After eating breakfast she had received a missive to meet Professor Snape for instructions on how to use the time turner. He had basically given her the same run down on the device Professor McGonagall had before giving her the instructions for its use. Not surprisingly Professor Snape had been one of the few that did not agree with Hermione's use of the item.
She wasn't quite sure how to act around him this morning since last nights occurrence. Granted he is her professor, but that look and slight smile last night had seemed more personal, just like the wink from Professor Lupin on the train, then his smile also after she had waved at him.
She had now used the device three times. It really was amazing and quite exciting. The experience is what could be called, her type of adventure.
Checking the hallways, making sure no one could see her, she turned it once, entranced as the rings began to spin and the sparkling sands sifted through the hourglass.
