"Well hullo 'ermione." Hagrid smiled, stepping aside so she could enter his hut. "What do I owe this pleasure?"
"Oh, it was such a nice day; I thought I might go for a walk." She said, taking a seat at his large table. Her answer was partially true. It was Saturday and Hermione thought she might save Professor Snape the effort of avoiding her all day by keeping herself out of the castle. She also wanted to ask Hagrid about Olie.
"So 'ow is yer 'prenticeship wit Professor Snape going?"
"Well funny you should ask, Hagrid. What can you tell me about Olie?"
"Mention her ta you, did 'e?" Hagrid asked, setting a huge cup of tea in front of her. "Not surprisin' really. 'e sure did love tha cat.
"I heard you might have a picture of her when she was kitten?"
"I believe I do." He crossed the hut and plucked a large box down from a high shelf. He rummaged through it for a few minutes. "Ere it is. Knew I still 'ad it." He glanced at it before handing it over the Hermione.
The picture had been taken in Hagrid's pumpkin patch. Two small first years, one boy, one girl stood grinning proudly at the camera, a large pumpkin in between them. Seated on the pumpkin was a tiny black kitten. Hermione giggled as the kitten jumped playfully off the pumpkin and tried to scamper away. A very young Severus Snape grabbed her up and placed her back on the pumpkin, facing her towards the camera. As soon as he released his hold on her, she jumped down again. A pretty girl with long red hair laughed and grabbed the kitten, placing her back on the pumpkin.
"Is that….?" Hermione said, pointing at the picture.
"Lily Evans, Harry's mum? It sure is."
"They look so young and tiny. Professor Snape looks so…." She faltered for a word.
"Happy?" Hagrid said, smiling at the kids in the picture.
"Yeah." Hermione said, unable to look away from the smiling little boy. "What can you tell me about Olie?"
Hagrid smiled and wiped his eyes with one large hand. "Oy, she were a special little cat, tha one. Beautiful when she grew up. Sleek and black. Smart as a whip too. Ya nev'r seen a boy so devoted to his animal. But more then tha, I nev'r seen a cat so devoted to 'er boy as tha cat was to Professor Snape. Ya' could see it in 'er eyes 'ow much she loved 'im."
Hagrid sighed and took a large sip of his tea. "She was jus a scrawny flea bitten thing when he brought her to me. Asked me to help nurse her back to health, didn't he? Nothin' wrong wit her tha a little good food and some tender lovin' care couldn' fix."
"And she stayed with you during the summers."
"Ay." Hagrid nodded his head. "Professor Snape was very private, even when 'e was jus a lad. 'e never said much about his Mum and Dad, but I got the feelin' they weren't very nice people. Drank a bit, argued a lot, knocked him around. Sad really." He paused and wiped his eyes again. "Did she miss him when he was gone. I'll tell yer 'ermione, there were many times that Olie would disappear round bedtime only to reappear in the morning. I got curious and followed her one night. Do you know where I found her?"
Hermione shook her head.
"I followed her to the Slytherin's dungeons. Curled up on her boy's bed, wadn't she? Saddest thing ya' ever seen. In the six summers that she stayed wit me, I never had to wonder when September 1st was comin'. Round mid August, she's jus start cheerin' right up. Knew her boy was comin' home."
"So they were close?"
"Close wadn't the half of it." Hagrid snorted. "Inseparable is more like it. Seems like she were 'is only true friend."
"What about Lily?"
"Oh 'e and Lily were close the firs few years, but then they jus seemed to drift apart. Ya know 'ow kids are."
"Was it because of James?"
"Tha' and 'e'd started to hang out wit some bad kids from Slytherin." Hagrid shook is head. "Ya' know I nev'r really believed 'e actually liked those boys. Think 'e jus wanted to be liked and accepted. 'e nev'r really 'ad that."
"Is it true what Professor Snape's showed Harry? Were Sirius and James cruel to him?"
Hagrid nodded his head sadly. "Ay. They tormented the poor lad. Started when they met on the train."
"Why?"
"Oh I dunno. 'e was different, quiet, smart."
"He was an easy target?" Hermione said, not trying to hide the disgust in her voice.
"Ay" Hagrid agreed. "I think it 'bout broke 'is heart when Lily started runnin' round wit James."
Hermione sighed sadly. "Professor McGonagall told me he really changed after Olie passed away."
"'e took losing her hard, 'e did." Hagrid smiled sadly. "Now mind ya', Professor Snape 'as nev'r been wat you'd call outgoing, but before 'e lost Olie, 'e'd join fer a pint at the Leaky Cauldron every once in a while. Even crack an odd joke now an agin."
Hermione tried to imagine Professor Snape and Hagrid having a pint together. She couldn't picture it.
"Ya' know 'ermione. Loves a strange thing." Hagrid said, pulling her attention back. "It's a wonderful thing, to give and get love. But I think, when ya' got all this love in ya' and no where fer it to go, it turns sour on ya, poisonous even. I think that's what happened to Professor Snape when Olie died."
"What do you mean?"
"In 'is whole life, Olie was the onliest creature 'e ever loved tha love 'im back. When she died, 'e had no where to go wit tha love and it just all went rotten inside of 'im. Well thas what I think anyways." Hagrid said, clearly embarrassed by his speech.
"I love you Hagrid." Hermione said, kissing him gently on the cheek. "Thanks so much for talking to me."
Thinking about what Hagrid had said, Hermione made her way slowly up the darkening path to the castle. Still lost in her own thoughts, she pushed through the dungeon doors. Entering the living room, she froze, glancing quickly about the room, before her eyes returned to settle on the table standing in the middle of the room.
"Well." She sighed to herself, approaching the table slowly.
