Hearing someone come into his office, Draco looked up and scowled. It was just Black coming to annoy him about something. Though he wouldn't say it to anyone, as well as making sure it didn't look that way, he honestly didn't mind talking to Black and Lupin. Since the whole 'showdown' with Potter at his house, the two seemed to be coming in more often to just talk to him. With how things were, he didn't mind it, especially since they were nice about things and weren't trying to push him into accepting what was going on more than he had.
Seating himself on the edge of the desk, Sirius looked down at the papers scattered there. From plenty of personal experience he knew he was seeing homework. Picking one up off the stack of things that had been graded, he turned it this way and that, trying to decipher what appeared to him to a language like hieroglyphs. “I'm sure glad you can tell what this is. It's all meaningless to me!”
Giving a snicker, Draco said, “Yes, well, if you didn't take the topic in school, you won't understand it.”
“I had no desire to. That was way too much work for me!” Sirius grinned, tossing the paper back onto the stack.
Snorting, assuming that, Draco finished grading the paper he was working on then tossed it onto the pile with the rest. Leaning back in his chair, he looked at Black then asked, “Is there a reason you're here annoying me or is it just for general purposes to drive me bats?”
“Actually, there's a reason,” Sirius nodded. Turning to where he was sitting on the edge of the desk, facing the younger Malfoy, he said, “Remus and I have been thinking--”
“That alone frightens me,” Draco groaned, rubbing his eyes.
“Hey! We come up with some good things when we put our heads together!” Sirius grinned. “The maps are proof of that.”
Draco conceded that point, “I'll give you that. I'm betting if you sold the template to the Weasley twins, you would make a small fortune off of it. Not to mention some of the other things you've done, like the mirrors.”
“Honestly? We've thought about doing that,” Sirius told him, grinning bigger when he saw the horrified look on Draco's face. “Calm down! We decided that if we do, it won't be until we're done teaching. As neither of us plan to quit any time soon, we're all safe. No way in hell are we giving the sneaky l'il blighters in this castle a leg up while we're here.”
“That's good! They are bad enough as they are without any extra help.” Draco told him dryly. Shifting around, crossing his legs, he faced Black then asked, “Alright, so what were you two thinking? As it apparently involves me, I want to know before I get drawn into anything.”
“You know Harry owns a restaurant, right?” Seeing Draco nod, Sirius pressed on, “What we were thinking was this-- since you're a wiz when it comes to financial things as well as predicting what will work and what won't, we thought you should take it over for him. We know he only spends one day a week there handling whatever is needed. From what he's said, it's always been that way. It would probably improve things for it even though, from what Harry says, it's pretty successful and do better than what it is. I mean, he's apparently got some damned good managers for it as they've done well by him, but if you were to step in, it might do better.”
“First issue with this is working with Potter,” Draco sneered. “That won't go well. Second is that there were issues the last time I was in that place. I don't see how we can surmount either of them.”
“Yeah, there are issues, I’ll grant you that,” Sirius nodded. “First one is Harry. Look, Draco, I know you two don't get along. That goes way back. It can be overcome. Severus and I didn't either in school. It was bad, I admit it. We get along now because we set things aside and worked towards it. I don't see where Harry won't do the same thing. In fact, since I've talked to him about this, he's willing to do so. He said that and that it sounded like a good idea to him. All he handles is paperwork and things. Nothing more than that. From what he said, he's willing to let someone else take on seeing what they can do with it.”
“I don't need charity from Potter!” Draco sneered, looking mutinous.
“How is it charity?” Sirius asked calmly, looking at him. “Harry isn't giving you anything but an opportunity to do what you're damned good at to start with. He's going to get plenty out of it as well. It's not like he's offering it because he feels sorry for you. Hell, it wasn't even his idea. It came from Remus and me, not him. He wants to keep the thing as it gives him a good income, but he's never really run it. You know better than he does what such things take.”
That gave Draco pause. Thinking it over, he asked, tone distracted, “I would have to answer to him though, wouldn't I?”
“Of course, he does own it. Since he's only there one day a week, it's not like you would have to deal with him every day.” Sirius shrugged. “From what I gather in talking to him, he lets the managers do almost everything. The only thing he does is paperwork that's needed and sign off on things. You could take on most of that other than the paperwork. You have good instincts, Draco, I don't see why you couldn't do this. And I know my godson; if you treat him respectfully, he'll do the same with you. He's done that now.” Seeing a skeptical look on Draco's face, Sirius explained, “When you were throwing hexes at him, how many did he throw back at you? Think about it.”
Lowering his eyes, Draco thought over that whole mess. His first reaction was to say that Potter had thrown just as many, but when he looked back on it, he realized he hadn't. In fact, he hadn't thrown anything at him. All he had done was shield and duck, nothing more. Lifting his eyes, he looked at Black and said nothing.
“Draco, I know you and Harry don't get along. We all get that. It's been a decade, though. Some things need to be allowed to die. This rivalry is one of them,” Sirius schooled as gently as he could. “If Severus and I can do that, so can you and Harry.”
“It's not that easy,” Draco told him automatically.
“Why isn't it? It's the past. As such, it should be left there.” Sirius sighed. “Look, I'm going to be honest here. Your father said something to me and I tend to agree with it.” Seeing Draco look at him, eyebrow arched, Black pressed on, “You and Harry are in a similar boat. Before you scoff, let me finish. Both of you are having issues because of what happened in the past. Though they are from different ends of the spectrum. Harry's comes from the fact no one would leave him alone. That's why he hid out and didn't let anyone know who he was. If he had shown up as Harry, all hell would have broken loose and no one would have left him alone. And, before you say it, he wouldn't revel in it either. He wanted to be given a chance to be left alone and live his life as he saw fit. Isn't that what you want as well? For people to leave you alone and let you live your life how you want, not going by the past?”
Thinking that over, though not liking the comparison, Draco gave a slight nod.
“Then think about the proposal. You can do what he did and use a glamour. If you don't do that, all that's needing to be done is say that Jay put you in charge. Period. They trust him and would take his word for it. They know he wouldn't do anything like that if he didn't put trust in you to handle things and not be an arse about it. There might be some talk, but that will die down. From what Harry said, that place has a fluid population. Though there are The Bums, even their ranks change often, what with them moving on and such. You would have a chance to build another life there. Wouldn't that be good?”
“On the face, I can see where it might work. That doesn't mean I'm accepting it or that there won't be issues, but it could.” Draco conceded.
“Why not give it a shot then? Draco--” stopping, Sirius sighed, not sure how to say this. “Look, you know me by now, I’m not here to harass you or trick you into something, right?” Seeing the young man nod, Sirius pressed on, “The time is coming where it's going to be announced that Harry's back. He's been talking about finding something to do. In order to even get a job, he's going to have to admit he's back. When that happens, everyone is going to find out who he's in a relationship with. As he put it to me; he didn't come back to be with your father and Severus to hide the whole thing. He wants to be with them and likes it. I know you have your doubts, but he does. If he didn't, he would have stayed right where he was. Once that happens, the three of you are going to be drawn into the nightmare.”
Looking sombre, Draco thought that over. Oh, if that did happen it would be a nightmare, for all of them. Everything in the past will come up once more and they would be looked at again. He didn't like that. With a sigh, he rubbed his eyes in a tired way. “Bollocks.” Was all he had to say on the topic.
“I believe Harry's reaction was similar, though the word was less nice,” Sirius grinned. “Look, he doesn't want that either and is worried about all three of you when it comes to it. I'll be honest, though, he's tired of hiding and sneaking around. He's also bored and wants something to do. Can you imagine having to sit around and do nothing all day? That's what he gets to do. He can't tell anyone who he is, his friends all have lives of their own, he can't spend most days with the two beings he came back with, nothing. So, he's pondering his options. If you do this, you might get the fallout for the rest of the school year, though that would be minimal with you being in the castle, but after that you could vanish. You know what that place is like better than I do. What happens here might be news but it's not going to cause the whole mess there it would here. If you use a glamour, it won't even touch you. You get to start over. If, after a time, once you settle, make friends and all that, you can drop it. You'll still be Draco Malfoy, but people won't start out with the prejudice. Is that a bad idea?”
Thinking that over, Draco could see the merits in it, he really could. If he went the route Potter did and used a glamour, no one would know who he was. He could get his second chance. That and he would get to do something he was good at, not something he hated, like he did teaching. That was a plus. With a nod, he said, “I'll think about it. Give me some time.”
“Good! When you do, talk to Harry. He's not going to give you shite, Draco. As he's down in Severus' chambers every night, as you well know, you two can hash out things there. Keep in mind, he's not going to bite your head off or make snide remarks if you don't do that first. He rather likes the idea, from what he said.”
Nodding thoughtfully, Draco was seriously pondering it. It did sound like a good out for him. Well, if he could get over working for Potter, that was.
“Give it a chance, Draco,” Sirius told him quietly. “If you can get over the whole thing, so can Harry. Hell, he did that with your dad! From what he said, he wanted nothing to do with Lucius when your father tagged along with Severus the first time, making it clear to Severus. He gave it a chance then got over it. Look what happened from there? I'm not saying you two would be best friends, no one would ask that of you, but you can get along. It would give you someone to talk to, you know. That's better than what you have now.”
“I'll consider it, alright? Best I can say right now,” Draco told him, looking in his direction.
Grinning, Sirius nodded, “All I'm asking.”
Nodding, Draco looked down then sighed, “Unless you have something else to annoy me about, can I finish grading these nightmares?”
“Have at 'em! You can do the ones I have waiting on me if you're that bored.” Sirius laughed, hopping off the desk.
“No thank you!” Draco glowered, picking up his quill. “I have enough of my own to worry about.”
“Yeah, I figured. And I better get on mine before Remus hunts me down and chains me to the desk.” With that Sirius walked towards the door.
After slipping into the castle for the night, Harry was seated on the floor in front of the table that was near the fireplace, grading papers. Medani was curled up on the table, reveling in the heat from the fire. It had been a week since the foray down into the chamber and the basilisk was loving his new life. Calm and not at all aggressive, he was content to stay in the tank during the day and come out at night when Harry was around to talk to. Nor did he take issue with Severus or Lucius handling him for whatever reason. As far as the basilisk was concerned, he had life in the lap of luxury and wasn't going to mess it up. As Dumbledore and McGonagall had come to the conclusion that, unless there was a problem with him, Medani could stay, the serpent was happy as a clam.
Plowing through the small mound of homework that was there, Harry was trying to get it done. He had something he wanted to talk to Severus and Lucius about, so he wanted to finish this chore as fast as he could so they had plenty of time before bed. As it was something serious, he wanted to ensure that they had time to hash it all out before they needed to lie down.
Tossing the last one from Potions into the stack, Harry stretched, groaning as he did. After rolling his neck, he reached out and stroked Medani on the head where his feathers were. “I never thought your feathers would be soft, but they are,” he said to the contentedly hissing basilisk.
“I'm young so they are soft. When I get older and bigger, they'll change I imagine,” Medani said, head turning in Harry's direction.
“You seem to like them being stroked,” Harry commented, grinning.
“It does feel good, yes. It's something soothing.”
Nodding, Harry stroked his head a little more then looked up when the door opened. Seeing Lucius come in from his room, already dressed in his pajamas, he smiled. “Everything go alright? No problems tonight?”
Pouring himself a brandy, Lucius took a sip then walked over and seated himself on the sofa behind Harry. Running his fingers through the younger man's hair, he said, “All was quiet tonight. Didn't even have to issue a detention. I believe that has more to do with how cold the castle is since it's rather frigid outside and the break coming in a couple weeks. The students are staying in the dorms where it's warmer and trying to get things done so they don't have homework over the winter break. Even Severus said it was quiet on his end. He just went up to the hospital wing to check on Miss Hornsworth before coming down.”
“Is she doing alright?” Harry asked, leaning back into Lucius' touch.
“Very good, actually,” Lucius nodded. “I believe she only needs a couple more doses of the treatment and she'll be able to be released. That's a good thing. Of course, she'll be on potions for the rest of her life, or at least until someone comes up with a real cure, but it's far better than what it was.”
“That's good then, Harry nodded, smiling.
“Indeed, it is!” Lucius conceded.
Stepping into his quarters, Severus looked at the two and nodded. Removing his robes, he tossed them over a chair then also poured himself a brandy. Walking over to the couch, giving the basilisk a stroke on the head before seating himself, he sighed as he sunk into the plush cushions. “Ah, this is comfortable.”
“All is well with your Snake, I take it?” Lucius asked.
“Very well, actually. She's sitting up, talking, though it's mainly complaining about being confined to the infirmary. That's a good sign if there ever was one. Poppy is most pleased with her progress,” Severus nodded.
“Good! Glad she's doing better,” Harry said, glancing at Severus.
Nodding, Severus sipped his brandy then changed the topic. Looking at Harry, he asked, “Was there something you wanted to talk to us about?”
“Yeah, there is,” Harry nodded. Standing, he pushed the papers aside then sat down on the table, facing the two men. Leaning forward, he rested his elbows on his knees, clasping his hands between his spread legs. “There's a couple things, actually. The first one has to do with me revealing I’m back.”
“I take it you've finally come up with something you want to do?” Lucius asked, looking at him.
“I have,” Harry told him with a determined nod. “That whole bit with the Chamber-- I realized that I don't want to hide anymore. I liked feeling useful for something again. So, I was thinking since Sirius and Remus both have mentioned it, that I might go to Minerva then see about taking over for Madam Hooch. I mean, from what all of you said, there is more around here that needs done than just that. They do need someone for it, but there are other things that people need help with. I can do that. It was my thought that though there's going to be an uproar over this, if I'm here in the castle, I can avoid most of it.” Stopping, he looked at the two then said, “What do you think?”
“I don't see this as a bad idea, Harry,” Severus told him honestly. “Not only is it like you said, more insular here when it comes to avoiding the publicity, you can stay with us down here as the relationship is established. It'll give you plenty to do. Help is always needed in many areas. Even if it's just giving an assist to all of us with things like grading papers.”
“I agree, it's a good option,” Lucius nodded. “And, if you go to Minerva, you can make it clear you only want to deal with her. She'll accept that. That way you don't have to deal with Albus any more than doing things like staff meetings. She is handling most everything with the staff anyway as she prepares to take over. This could work.”
“I thought it might. It's something I like doing and can manage so I don't see a problem. I just wanted to make sure because it affects all of us when this comes out,” Harry shrugged.
“As we've said before; we'll handle the fallout, never fear,” Lucius told him with a dismissive wave. “Is this what you want, Harry? Are you sure?”
Looking at both of them, Harry gave a firm nod, “I do. I really do. It's been so long since I felt useful for something. I mean, in France things were fine, I was content to be a beach bum. Here, though, I realized that's not something I could do forever. It's more like I want to do something meaningful. This would do it. For now anyway.”
“Then you made a good call,” Severus told him with a nod. “I do know there are a few staffing changes coming. At least one is quitting that we are going to need to fill. It may be that you can take that one. You are better suited to it than most are.”
“Which one's that?” Harry asked as he petted Medani's head.
“Muggle Studies,” Severus smirked. “As you were raised by Muggles, you can do a damned sight better than anyone else I can think of. They aren't going into the more modern things, obviously, it's more the basics for those that have never dealt with them.”
“That wasn't something I thought of,” Lucius said, looking at Severus. “He's right, though. You would do fine! Mention it to Minerva. She's already in somewhat of a dither about who to get. The only ones that seem to want that position are the ones that are obsessed with them though have never been among them. You would do far better.”
Nodding slowly, Harry pondered, “That could work. It's not something I would have thought about, but I'd be able to do it with no problem.”
“Indeed, you would. It would also take a load off Minerva's mind to have someone waiting in the wings. Mention it to her. I'm certain she will like it.” Severus told him firmly. “However, you're going to need to tell her about us as well, especially if you want to be quartered down here. Eventually, everyone is going to figure it out as you've said you don't want to hide it.”
“I will,” Harry said, nodding. Grinning slightly, he added, “I think I have something in mind for that though.”
Arching an eyebrow, Lucius asked, “Should I be frightened now?”
“No, nothing scary. You'll love it though,” Harry said, grin growing. “You'll just have to wait and see on that though.” Straightening up, Harry said, “I'll owl Minerva tomorrow about setting up a meeting. We all know she can keep this quiet until I show. I say that's the best way to do it. Of course, Draco will have to be told. He wouldn't like being blindsided by it. Sirius and Remus will know as well. Everyone else-- they can wait, including the rest of my friends. Let it be a surprise.”
“Yes, that's a good way to proceed. We can quell the rumor mill that way with no one being the wiser until you take over. It will work well.” Severus nodded.
“I agree completely. Just make sure you mention to Minerva you need time off on the weekends to tend to things in France. As you don't need more than eight hours or so to do that, she shouldn't have a problem.” Lucius added.
“I didn't think of that but I will,” Harry nodded. “Or I can do it in the middle of the week when I have a slow time. It'll work well there.” Stopping, he looked at the two of them then asked, “You don't have a problem with this or see issues?”
After a glance at Lucius, who was shaking his head, Severus said, “I don't. In fact, I think it's a great option. As you said, it's one that's giving you something to do and you like it. It'll also give us more time together. That is something I do appreciate. There will be fallout, yes, no doubt there, but it would come no matter what you chose to do. No, this is good.”
“I agree,” Lucius nodded. “There will be issues when things become known, especially with all the hormonal brats that reside in this place, not to mention some of their parents, however, it's good for all of us. As we're established in a relationship, we can get time off together to do things. That will only aid with some things. I do like it, honestly.”
Nodding, Harry was relieved. Chuckling, he said, “I'm going to be a coward and let you tell Draco, Lucius. I think he would handle it better coming from you rather than having to face me when it's explained.”
“Yes, I do agree there,” Severus said with an amused snort. “After all, that comes under the heading of a father's duties.”
“Cowards,” Lucius said with a smirk. “However, I will do so. As Severus said, that's my job as a father. And I believe you're right, Harry, he may handle it better if it comes from me. Yes, it's better I do it alone.”
“And it needs done sooner rather than later, Lucius,” Severus prodded. “He needs to know it's coming. Once Harry talks to Minerva and finds out, he should be told. Putting it off won't help anything.”
“I agree,” Lucius sighed, nodding. “I'll get with him soonest.”
Nodding, fully planning to ensure that Lucius stuck to that, Severus then looked at Harry. “You said there was something else you wanted to talk about? We can deal with the rest of this when you talk to Minerva and have things confirmed.”
“There is and it has to do with Draco, actually. Sirius and Remus thought it up. Though it's strange, I like the idea. It might be something Draco likes as well.” Slowly, Harry began walking the two through what the last of the Marauders had come up with. When he finished, he looked at Lucius and said, “Honestly? I don't see this as bad idea. If he's anything like you with business, everything will go great for me. And it gives him an out. What do you think?”
Looking down, brow furrowed, Lucius rubbed a finger over the rim of the snifter he was holding, deep in thought. Letting the whole thing play out in his mind, he began to nod slowly, “On its face, I do agree that it's something that might be a good idea. In fact, it's something that could work out well for all parties involved. Frankly, Draco would be well suited for something like that, provided he could keep his mouth in check.”
“My managers handle the public. They are damned good at it, actually. If he sticks to the other part, he'll be fine. And, as Sirius suggested, if he uses a glamour like I did, he gets a fresh start without all the baggage. I don't see it as something bad, really. The only issue I see is that he won't like working for me despite the fact I have no hand in running what goes on for the most part,” Harry explained.
Looking between the two, Severus said, “Honestly? I think it's a good idea. A contract would need to come into play and a truce put in motion, but it's a good out for him. Hell, Draco takes after you when it comes to business dealings. He would do wonderfully in such a position. I would suggest that this is something you may want to encourage, Lucius. It would work for all involved. He hates teaching and despises being here. If, as Harry says, he goes the route Harry did, he can start over.”
“I can let him stay at my place. It's not like I'm using it,” Harry shrugged. “I would have him pay rent to make sure it's on the up and up, of course, but won't gouge him. I don't see this as something bad. Hell, when Sirius and Remus came to me about it, I thought it was great. They said they were going to talk to him about it so he probably already knows. I just don't have a clue as to his leanings.”
“I agree, it's not. Hell, it's a good option for him. I'll talk to him and see where he leans on the matter then we can go from there,” Lucius told them. “I think, maybe, this is the break he's been wanting. He'll get the fresh start he couldn't elsewhere.”
“He'll just have to make his own way there,” Harry said. “I had to. It took me a while before I found some friends. That might be a good thing though. Let people get to know the real him without the issues dogging him. That's what it was for me.”
“Harry's correct. Let him get a fresh start and grow with it.” Severus told Lucius. “It'll do him good. If he doesn’t like it, though I bet he will, he can come back.”
“Yes, it's a good option. There aren't many right now,” Lucius said. “Tomorrow I'll get together with him and get his leanings then go from there. If it goes well, Severus and I can mediate while the two of you work out something for a contract,” he told Harry, looking at him.
“Works for me,” Harry shrugged. “I don't have a problem with it.”
Leaning back against the cushions, relaxing, Severus said, “Things are moving forward, that's for sure, in all areas. Though sudden, I can't say I'm displeased on this end.”
“I agree,” Lucius concurred. “It'll take some time to deal with the upheaval, but I like it.”
“Same here,” Harry agreed. “Let's see what comes tomorrow then we can work from there.”
“Now, onto this 'plan' you have about coming back, if you get the job of course,” Severus said, eyebrow arched. “Somehow, there is trepidation about this, Mr. Potter.”
Grinning from ear to ear, Harry said, “Oh, come on. You know I gotta do something for that! If we're going to do something to set Britain's Wizarding World on its ear, we need to go big with it! And, no, I'm not telling you what it is. You'll like it, though. After all, you're both evil gits!”
Groaning in mock pain, Lucius rubbed his eyes, “Oh, this is bad. I already know it!”
Looking at Harry, Severus scowled, “I agree with Lucius. This bodes nothing good.”
“Cowards!” Harry laughed, eyes twinkling. “Just trust me, you'll love it!'
“'Just trust me'-- famous last words before things go up in fiendfyre,” Lucius moaned, shutting his eyes and rubbing them some more.
Pinching the bridge of his nose, Severus shook his head, “The visions I'm getting are not pleasant, Mr. Potter. With your propensity for dramatics, I am envisioning catastrophe here!”
Rolling his eyes, Harry huffed, “Oh, come on! I've not done anything since we've been together that would cause this reaction! I've calmed down, you have to admit it! I want to do something to tweak everyone, though. And I have something perfect. Everything gets accomplished in one fell swoop and we get to laugh at the reaction. This is not bad!”
“I will withhold judgment on that until I hear what this brilliant scheme is!” Severus told him firmly, glaring his direction.
“I swear, nothing dangerous!” Harry grinned bigger.
“I think we're in trouble, Severus. Nothing is going to deter this, no matter what we say,” Lucius said, tone resigned.
Glowering in Harry's direction, something that just made the younger man grin even more, Severus sighed and nodded, “I agree. We're involved whether we like it or not. I'm just hoping this doesn't involve the need for shielding us from curses.”
“Nope, no need for self protection. All you have to do is walk somewhere,” Harry told them cryptically.
“Nothing, and I mean nothing, is ever that easy with you,” Severus stated firmly, crossing his arms over his chest.
“This will be, I promise. It's the reaction of where and when we do it that's the thing,” Harry chuckled.
“That feeling keeps getting worse the more you talk, Harry,” Severus intoned.
Shaking his head, unable to stop grinning, Harry huffed, “Face it, you're doing it. You'll love it, I promise!”
“We're doomed,” Lucius said, shaking his head.
“Gits,” Harry said with an exasperated sigh.
“Gits with a self preservation streak,” Severus pointed out. “Not to mention wary ones because of past history with you.”
Sighing once more, Harry said, “You're just going to have to wait to see what it is.” Standing, he stretched then said, “I'm going to bed. If you two gits want to join me, that's fine. If you're too scared--” Letting it trail off, Harry made his way towards the bedroom after reminding Medani to behave.
Downing the rest of his brandy, Lucius sat the snifter on the table then said, “Adventurous in the bedroom I can handle. It's just you have a strange version of adventurous elsewhere, Harry.”
“I'm saddled with two overly hormonal, grown teenagers,” Severus groused. Downing the last of his drink, he stood then trailed after the two.
“I don't hear you complaining when we're doing something,” Harry shouted from the bedroom. “I guess that means you're overly hormonal yourself, you great prat!”
Snorting, Severus said nothing, though he grinned and strode to join the two in the bedroom.
