Chapter 9

In one of the rare silences that reigned in the room while Draco was reading, Nicole began to cackle with laughter. Draco snapped his head up to look at her to see what was wrong. Seeing her doubled over with laughter, he wondered if she hadn’t gone barmy already. “Nicole, are you okay?” he asked timidly.

She rose back up to a sitting position, wiping the tears from her eyes and nodded. “Yeah, I’m fine. It’s just funny to see that old bastard wet himself whenever I appear to him. He gets so angry, especially if others are in the room.”

Draco shook his head, “You shouldn’t provoke him like that. He will only make it worse for Harry when the time comes.”

“I’m just keeping him paranoid, like we planned,” Nicole said, nonchalantly, rising to go to the kitchen. “Want anything from the kitchen?” she asked.

Draco shook his head, “I’m good.” Returning to his book, he didn’t notice the sly smile that graced her lips as she walked past him to the kitchen. Engrossed in the story, he didn’t notice that she had come back into the sitting room, wearing nothing but a smile. He didn’t notice her slink across the room to stand in front of him, until she took the book from his hands. Looking up at her, his eyes widened at seeing her naked standing in front of him. Remember there is still this curse to contend with until the Dark Lord is dead. This battle may drag out for days, hopefully it won’t, but it is a possibility. I must go to the Dark Lord’s side. He expects you to be at the school, Draco, so I suggest you both go tomorrow. The Room of Requirement is where the students are hiding out, waiting for Harry. Let’s hope he’s ready. Now, Nicole, you turned 17 several months ago and are now able to cast magic willingly, without worrying about the ministry stepping in. I hope you make good use of it during this war. You are a very powerful witch, and your powers have only grown. I love you, my child. No matter what happens, please remember that.”

“I love you, too, father.” Nicole looked over her shoulder at Draco and her face fell at the sight of him. He looked to be in pain. “What’s wrong, Draco?” she asked, moving to his side.

He shook his head, “Nothing, just not really wanting to kill or hurt anyone,” he said, forcing a smile onto his face.

Nicole knew that he was lying, something was wrong, but she wasn’t going to press the issue. She was already a bundle of nerves, knowing that this war would be over soon and hopefully the curse that coursed through her would be gone soon. Although, that would mean that Draco wouldn’t have to keep her alive anymore, meaning he would leave and pursue his own life as he wants to.

Draco watched Nicole as Severus vanished into the fireplace. ‘Oi, man, this could all be over soon. But that would mean that I won’t be needed in her life anymore. How can I go on to someone else? I can’t, I love her, but I don’t want her to feel that it’s only just sex with us. How do I do that?’ he thought to himself as he watched her. Now they needed to prepare to help Harry defeat the bastard who cursed her and wants to rule the world.

They both slept fitfully, not really wanting the morning to dawn. Waking, they never spoke and got dressed, ready for battle.

“Are you sure you’re okay, Draco?” she asked, concerned.

“Yeah, I’m fine. No need to worry about me. I’m just worried about you in this battle. I don’t want you to get hurt,” he said. He was worried about her getting hurt, but that wasn’t all that was on his mind. He didn’t want to burden her with his fears, so he kept quiet. Nicole studied him as he dressed. Draco started out the door to wait for her by the fireplace so that they could floo to the school.

She placed a hand on his arm to stop him from going, “Are you afraid…?” she began to ask.

Draco placed a finger on her lips to stop her question. Taking her shoulders in his hands, he leaned down slightly to look her in the eye. “Let’s not worry about that now. Right now we need to focus on helping Harry in whatever way we can. Everything else can wait,” he said and then leaned forward to take her lips in his, hoping that this wouldn’t be the last kiss they shared. They went downstairs side by side, not wanting to be away from each other, but neither having the courage to say it. Stepping into the fireplace, Draco threw down the powder and called out for the headmaster’s office at Hogwarts. Severus was waiting for them in his office.

“Draco, you should head down to your common room. Your friends will be wondering where you are. I am calling for all students to come to the Great Hall to find Potter. He will be arriving soon, I’m sure. Nicole, remember what I said about my feelings. No matter what you see, remember that I love you and am fighting for the side of good. I do have to keep up appearances for the Dark Lord, though. Just remember that you are my daughter and I will do anything to protect you and those you love, including Harry.” Severus explained to them. “Now, Nicole, you should go to the Room of Requirement with the others. Join them; convince them that you escaped the Dark Lord’s confines when he left to come here. Let them know that you are on their side. They won’t likely be keen on a Slytherin in their midst, but you have befriended some of them, so that will be in your favor,” he instructed. “Now go, this will all be over very soon.”

Nicole and Draco left the headmaster’s office and made the stairs to the corridor. “It feels weird being back here, especially now,” Nicole said and a shiver raced down her back.

Draco wrapped his arms around her and held her close, “I will find you when the fighting starts. I won’t let anything happen to you and I will be keeping a watch on the time. Godfather was right; we need to remember the curse is still active.” Kissing the top of her head, he released her and walked away towards the dungeons to the Slytherin common room. Nicole watched him walk away and felt empty. Walking slowly, she made her way to the Room of Requirement. Standing there, she drew in a deep breath and began to pace, but was interrupted.

“Nicole? Is that really you?” a voice asked from behind her.

Nicole looked up to see Ginny standing there watching her. “Ginny. Yes, it’s me. I heard that the good guys were holed up here, and I wanted to join you. When that bastard left the manor, I was able to escape, and I came straight here.” She watched the ginger haired girl for any signs of disbelief.

Ginny grasped her hand, “Come on, Harry just arrived and Snape has called for everyone to come to the Great Hall.” A door appeared in the wall and the two girls entered. All heads turned to them when they entered the room.

“What’s she doing here? She’s a snake,” a voice rang out from the crowd.

“She’s my friend and she’s on our side. She was captured by him and has been held there all year. She has just now escaped because he left to come here and dropped the wards on the place. If you can’t accept her help, then maybe you shouldn’t be here.” Ginny said. “Now, Snape knows you’re here, Harry. He wants everyone in the Great Hall right now.” A plan was made and the students made their way down to the Great Hall. Harry caught Nicole’s eye and they stayed behind a moment.

“Is it true? He kidnapped you?” he asked.

“Yes, Harry it is, but it is a very long story and now is not the time for it. You have things to do and I am here to help in any way I can. Now, go, end this,” she told her brother, pushing him out the door.

They all gathered in the Great Hall, forcing a confrontation with Severus, who ended up flying out the window. Harry ran off to look for the horocrux he still needed to destroy. Draco found Nicole and watched her; he didn’t want to tip his hand just yet. He needed to remain a spy for now. Once the fighting started, he would need to be near her so that he could keep her safe.

Nicole was concentrating hard on pushing back the emotions running rampant now. Fear the top most in everyone there, including herself.
