Hermione woke the next morning, thankful it was the weekend, as she found all she wanted was to lie in for a bit with her thoughts. She thought about all the people that would die in the future if she wasn't successful in finding the Diary and the cup before October thirty-first 1981. Though, with Severus being swayed from becoming a Death Eater, that fact would also play a part in whether or not Voldemort was to find out about the prophecy as soon as he had in her time. It may just buy them some time, but she knew she couldn't take the chance. Two down, three more to go. She sighed heavily, rubbing the sleep from her eyes.
Though Sirius Black was a real sod in this time period, Hermione couldn't help but feel compelled to love him for the man she knew he would become. For him, she was determined to save James and Lily. So he would have his best friends, and so Harry would have both his parents, and his godfather.
Remus Lupin's fate was also quite heavy to Hermione. The Werewolf wasn't a horrible person, even in the time of the Marauders, and always seemed to be the voice of reason. Not to mention, there was a little metamorphmagus out there named Nymphadora Tonks who he would grow to love. That is, if Hermione's changing the outcome of the future would allow them to come together. She didn't want to change anyone's love life. She wanted to see everyone grow old together. Friends, and lovers alike.
As for Peter Pettigrew, she found she just couldn't care any less what his future turned out to be like. She groaned as she rubbed her eyes again, knowing that sooner or later, she would have to reveal who she was to James, Lily, Remus, and Sirius. They weren't stupid, after all. They would figure out that she wasn't who she said she was. Something told her that she and Severus would need their help.
She was suddenly startled by the sound of Severus calling to her from the bottom of the steps leading to the girls dormitory. Hermione hopped out of bed and went to the door, pulling it open. "I'll be down in a minute." she called back.
Hermione closed the door and proceeded to dress herself, all the while thinking about how she would go about getting this unlikely group together in one room without them wanting to hex one another. She worried, especially, about Sirius and Severus being in the same room together.
"That is a really bad idea." Severus said after Hermione explained her thoughts to him. Being that Hermione had told him that Peter Pettigrew had been the one to sell James and Lily out to Voldemort, he didn't trust any of the others not to let all their plans slip to the little rat.
"It wouldn't be such a horrible idea if I could prove everything to them, everything I say." Hermione mused quietly with a thoughtful expression on her face.
"You want to show them your memories. That could work... But it is no secret that there are such things as 'fake' or 'tampered' memories, Hermione." Severus reasoned, knowing that even if she was to show them the things she'd seen, it wasn't guaranteed they wouldn't take it as an elaborate hoax.
Hermione shrugged. "The only thing we can do is try. The main goal of this small plan is to get the Potters, er... James and Lily, Sirius and Remus to stop putting so much trust in Pettigrew. He could very well be the downfall in this. Because if Voldemort is able to make Harry a Horcrux, the whole damn thing will start all over again. It's risky, but... it has to be done, Severus. It just might work. We have to do whatever it takes for Voldemort to not gather that bit of crucial information."
Severus sighed as he leaned forward on the sofa to rub at his temples. The headache was coming back. "You really are just an insufferable know-it-all." he grumbled, receiving a playful punch on the shoulder from Hermione. "However,-" he said, sitting back again. "I will trust your ideas and go along with them, as you have been right about everything else so far. How do we get them together then?"
Hermione screwed her face into a thoughtful expression once more. The only solution she could come to was, "Lily. Since you two are on speaking terms again, she may just be the only way we can pull this off. If you could, try and talk to her as soon as possible, and request that she bring James, Sirius, and Remus to the seventh floor. We'll meet here in the Room of Requirement. I'll have enchantments in place already so that our little rat, Peter isn't able to follow them inside. And I'll be watching for any rats scurrying about."
Severus let out a short laugh. "How do you plan to do that? Do you have some sort of keen rat-spotting skill that I am yet unware of?"
Hermione smiled brightly and reached into her beaded bag. Harry had urged her to take it with her, as he didn't have much of a use for it anymore. He had the castle mapped out, and knew it just as well as he did, the back of his hand. Plus, he figured, that he would receive it again later anyway. Severus watched with interest as she withdrew what looked to be a ratty old piece of parchment; a look of disappointment falling on him, seeing it.
"You're going to write about it?" he asked sarcastically, quirking a brow.
Hermione scoffed and rolled her eyes impatiently. "You're incorrigible." she giggled, unfolding the parchment to lay across both their laps. Giving it a light tap with her wand, "I solemnly swear that I am up to no good." she muttered. Severus watched as the entire layout of Hogwarts began to sprawl out on the parchment, finally revealed as a map. "The Marauder's Map..." he said, narrowing his eyes at the words. "This is Potter's creation?" he asked incredulously, almost unable to believe that he was capable of coming up with an idea so clever.
Hermione nodded. "And Sirius' and Remus'. Peter's as well."
Severus bent over the map, trying to find himself and Hermione. "This room doesn't show up on it." he mused after being unsuccessful.
Again, Hermione nodded. "Exactly my point. If neither James, Sirius or Remus happen to have the map on them when they finally arrive here, that means Peter may have possession of it. Since this room doesn't show up on the map, his curiosity won't be able to get the best of him if he's none the wiser. Should he be looking at the map, anyway. If his friends disappear without his knowing where they are, it won't be a surprise if he does watch the map like a hawk. The Marauders didn't know that this room existed at the time they made this map. Not to mention... This map will also serve as ample proof to my story."
"They won't have any choice but to believe it." Severus supplied with a thoughtful nod. "Okay then." he bent again to survey the map, trying to pick out Lily's location. He found her in the Library, surprisingly enough, alone. "I suppose I'll go and speak to her then."
Hermione tapped the map again, claiming she'd managed her mischief, and closed it to place it back in her bag. "Alright then. You should tell her that this should take place tomorrow. To set an approximate time... About five p.m. should work." she smiled up at him as he stood.
Severus nodded in understanding and wasted no more time leaving the Room. Quietly, he entered the Library, looking around for Lily. Soon, he found her sitting, still alone at a table with her back turned to him. Being heavily engaged in her reading, she didn't notice him until she startled at him pulling out the chair right next to her to take a seat.
"Oh! God, Severus... You gave me a fright." she breathed, slamming the book shut. Severus stared for a moment at the book cover, wondering why she was so quick to hide her reading, but there was no title printed on it. "Oh just... research..." she explained with a slight blush, seeing where his eyes had been.
"What sort of research?" he asked; curiosity getting the best of him.
Lily's cheeks went almost as red as her hair. "Er... Well... Severus, have you and Hermione ever er... You know,-"
"No." Severus replied abruptly, knowing she didn't want to say it. He shook his head, laughing a bit at her timidness. "No." he repeated. "Why?"
Lily took a deep breath. "Well, because James wants to. Like,... He really wants to, and... I'm just afraid that I'll be such shite at it so... I'm reading up a bit." her embarrassment was rampant. Severus decided he would let her in on his secret, so she wouldn't feel so strange about it. "To be honest, I've been doing a bit of reading as well. Hermione's already a bit experienced..." he trailed off, noting how strange it was; the idea that Hermione was experienced with him, but he wasn't with her. It was so weird.
Lily gasped, eyes growing wide "She's experienced? Meaning?"
Severus shifted in his seat, "That's why I'm coming to talk to you now. There is a lot about her that nobody else knows, aside from myself and Dumbledore. Very important things that she wants to let you in on.-" Severus paused as he pulled out his wand to cast a muffliato charm over the area. "- Do you think you could persuade Potter, Black and Lupin to accompany you to the seventh floor around five o'clock tomorrow evening?"
Lily furrowed her red brows in confusion but nodded. "What for though, Severus? This is all beginning to sound strange. You're not planning a prank are you?" she eyed him wearily. Severus shook his head. "No. I promise you, it isn't anything like that. It's a serious request. Nothing more or less."
Lily seemed to relax, hearing the sincerity in his tone. "Okay then." she agreed.
"There is just one thing though, Lily... Pettigrew must not know anything of -"
"He's harmless, Severus." she defended him, and given the things Severus knew, it made him cringe. "No..." he began, tensely, "He is not harmless. Just trust me. Alright? He cannot know, so please, do stress this to Potter, Lupin, and Black."
"Okay then... I think I can manage that. I'll just threaten to hex the lot of them if they tell." she smiled at him as he stood to take his leave. Lily decided it couldn't be an elaborate scheme just to prank the lot of them if he was stressing that Peter wasn't invited.
Severus gave her a brief smile. "Good. See you then. Have a fantastic night, Miss Lily." he said before turning to leave.
------
Severus stood leaned against the stone wall outside of the Room of Requirement, watching with much amusement as Hermione shuffled about the corridor to cast the aforementioned enchantments. Once she was finished, she checked her watch. It was four-forty-five p.m.
Hermione pulled the map from her bag and quickly surveyed it long enough to see that Lily, Remus, James, and Sirius were indeed on their way. Without Peter.
"Good," she said quietly as her eyes scanned the group of names headed their way. "They didn't tell Pettigrew. He's still in the common room. Lily must be quite persuasive." she beamed, tucking the map back into her bag just before she heard James, Sirius, and Remus laughing as they rounded the corner.
Sirius stopped aburptly, eyeing Severus wearily. "Why the hell are we meeting up with Sn-" James placed a hand on his friend's shoulder, catching his attention. Sirius turned to look at his best friend who was shaking his head, mouthing the word "Noooooooo"
Hermione cleared her throat. "I suppose you're all wondering why I've called this little get together... Not to mention, why were standing here in the corridor."
The four Gryffindors looked to one another and nodded. They all watched as Hermione closed her eyes. Moments later, she heard a collective intake of breaths and gasps as they watched the door materialize before their eyes.
Sirius and Remus suddenly sprang into action, each of them desperate to be the first inside. Remus, with his alpha stature, easily pushed Sirius to the ground, smirking triumphantly as he swung the door open and stepped inside. The rest followed, along with a grumbling Sirius who was now rubbing his sore arse.
The six of them stood in the room Hermione had requested, looking around at the contents. In the far left corner of the room stood a cabinet much like the one in the Headmaster's office. It held a Penseive. In the middle of the room there were two sofas and an armchair, in which Sirius plopped himself. Hermione shook her head and laughed. Some things never change.
"Erm... I reckon if you all take a seat, we can get to it." Hermione said as she took a seat on the right sofa, soon joined by Severus and Remus, while James and Lily sat themselves on the opposite sofa.
"What's this all about then?" Remus asked in a tired tone as he casually rubbed his right temple.
"Well,-" Hermione began, feeling quite nervous. "There's no easy way to say this, and I know that it's going to be even more difficult for you all to believe. I suppose I'll start by saying, that I've known each and every one of you before I came to school here."
She looked around the room at all the puzzled expressions. "The thing is... My name isn't actually Hermione Gaines. It's Hermione Granger, and I've come back in time to this particular year, from the year 1998.-"
"OH, fucking bollocks. Just another one of Snape's brilliant ideas to take the mickey, eh?" Sirius exclaimed, kicking back in the armchair. "Go on then. Let's see this elaborate bollocks unwind, shall we?"
"Just listen, Black. I know how difficult it is for you to do so, but for once in your miserable life, keep your ears keen and your mouth shut." Severus icily rounded back, finding that he was already annoyed.
"Go on then, Hermione. I'm quite curious." Remus urged, scooting to the edge of the sofa, placing his elbows on his knees.
"Like I was saying... I'm from the year 1998,-" she said, reaching into her bag for the time-turner. She set it down on the table between the two sofas, and everyone leaned in to get a good look at it. "A time-turner. My first piece of evidence to my story."
She seemed to have their attention now. "Sirius, James, Lily... You three aren't alive in 1998,-" Sirius scoffed, Lily gasped and James went pale. "Why?" he asked.
"If I divulge any more information to you, I want you all to make me a solemn swear that none of it leaves this room. I beg you, for all of your sakes,-" she said, looking around at the four of them, "- You cannot tell any of this to Peter Pettigrew."
"He's harmless" Lily breathed. Hermione shook her head sadly. "No, Lily... He is far from harmless, and you all need to stop putting your trust in him right now. He's a rat of epic proportions, and he is the reason why you, James and Lily, die on Halloween night in 1981. Vol - 'he-who-must-not-be-named', hears of a prophecy that a boy with the capacity to destroy him will be born at the end of July, 1980.
He goes to your home in Godric's Hollow after Pettigrew sells out your location, and murders you both in attempt to take your son's life, but when he kills you, Lily, a piece of Vol - his soul, becomes latched onto your son, making him a living Horcrux in the process, -"
"A Horcrux?" James asked quietly, looking confused. Hermione nodded. "Yes... Killing rips the soul into pieces. He found a way to store pieces of his soul so that nobody could kill him. His body could be destroyed, but he would be able to return with the help of his followers.
So then, your son is damned to live with his horrible muggle family. Lily's sister Petunia, and her oaf of a husband, Vernon Dursley. They abuse and neglect your son, and for the next seven years, his life is hell as Dumbledore has us on a wild mission to hunt down and kill all of these Horcruxes. By 1998, he had made seven of them.
It wasn't until the last battle that we realized that Harry was the last one. The eighth, that He didn't realize he'd created. Harry would need to be killed by Him, to rip the piece of his own soul out of his body. Only then, was Harry finally able to destroy Him. Your son was the only known person to ever survive 'Avada Kedavra'"
The room was silent for a moment. Hermione knew it was difficult for them to hear. Not to mention, for them to believe. Count on Sirius to say it.
"I still say this is fucking bollocks. A little tinker-toy 'time-turner' isn't enough to go on if you really expect us to believe this crack-pot story, Gaines." Sirius grumbled, folding his arms over his chest, giving him the look of a pouting child.
"I figured someone would say that. So, I will tell you this: I know everything about each and every one of you. Remus, you are a Werewolf, so James and Peter and Sirius took it upon themselves to become Animagus, so that they could keep you company during the full-moon,-"
"How do you,-" Remus began, but Hermione cut him off. "Sirius, you live at Number 12 Grimmauld Place with your parents who detest the fact that you were sorted into Gryffindor, and sport it proudly. You often stay with the Potters, because you can't stand your homelife. Or your parents, for that matter. Grimmauld Place is a dingy, dirty, dark place, and you can't take being there.
Years later, you wind up in Azkaban, for being the murderer of Peter Pettigrew, who pulled a fast one, chopped his own finger off, and transformed into a rat, and went into hiding. If you still don't believe me, -"
Hermione unzipped her bag again and pulled out the large piece of parchment. "James, do you have your Marauder's Map?" she asked.
"My... what?" James asked, playing dumb. Hermione sighed and laid the parchment down on the table and tapped it with her wand. "I solemnly swear that I am up to no good." the map came to life again, and the three boys' eyes widened.
"How did you come by this!? Remus! It was your turn to hold it, you sod!" Sirius exclaimed, pointing a finger at the Werewolf who was slowly reaching into his back pocket. They all watched as Remus withdrew the exact same map to set down on the table next to the other. Tapping it with his wand, he muttered the same solemn swear, and soon, two identical maps were on the table.
"How the hell did this happen?" James suddenly sounded furious.
"I acquired it from Harry Potter in 1998. Your son." Hermione stared pointedly at him. The room grew silent once more as they all leaned in to inspect both maps. They were indeed, identical. "Do you lot believe me now? Or am I still just a liar? If not..." Hermione reached into her bag once more and withdrew a corked vial with a memory trapped inside of it. She also sat that down on the table in front of them. "See for yourselves." she gestured toward the cabinet in the corner.
Immediately, the four Gryffindors rose from their places and all but ran to the Penseive; the memories snatched up from the table by Remus who hastily poured the contents into the shimmering pool.
"I'll warn you,-" Hermione began before they all bent to view the memories, "some images may be quite intense."
They all nodded, and soon, they were being pulled in to view how their futures would have turned out. Hermione and Severus sat together on the sofa, staring in the four's direction, waiting to see what their reactions would be like.
Approximately fifteen minutes later, they all resurfaced looking shaken and disturbed. Quietly, they all came back and sat down in the previous positions.
"Are there any more questions? Can I take your deafening silence as you finally believing what I say?" Hermione asked softly looking around at them all. Much to her gratitude, Sirius nodded slowly; eyes swimming with tears.
"It wasn't my intention to make you all so emotional. But being that I care about you, Remus, and you, Sirius, and Severus... James, and Lily, I obviously didn't know you two personally, but I love your son Harry with all my heart. He's my best friend. If we can all take the precautions now... He won't have to grow up without his parents, and his godfather, and his friend, Remus.
I came back here to change things. I fell for Severus, even though he was my teacher, -" Hermione smiled, her eyes also becoming wet with tears. "When he died, I couldn't handle it. A month after the date, I came back in time to change it all. To save you all. Peter Pettigrew is a weakling. A follower, and a betrayer. Even though Lord Vol,-... is dead in the future, I had to come back. I had to."
"I believe you." James quietly told her. "I believe you."
Sirius wiped his eyes on his robes and began to laugh, tearfully. "I had no idea you had such a capacity to care, Snape."
Severus shook his head.
"Severus made some mistakes, as you saw... But he knew he messed up by mentioning the Prophecy, so he asked Dumbledore to keep you all safe. It was Pettigrew, as your secret keeper, who gave up your location to Him." Hermione explained. "I think I've been successful in detering Severus from becoming a Death Eater, so now, it's Peter we have to worry about. He cannot know any of this, and like I said... I hope after finding out what you all know now, that you won't put so much trust in him."
"Let's make a pact then." Remus suggested. "That no one utters a word of this outside of this room. Our lives obviously depend on it. I for one... Don't feel much like dying so young."
"Alright then... I solemnly swear that I will never speak a word of this outside of this room." James valiantly spoke, followed by Remus, Sirius, and Lily.
Hermione smiled happily around at everyone. "Good. Thank you all... And would it be too much to ask, for you lot to just get along? I know that you all are very different in your own ways, but I think you all would like one another if you just give it a chance. Good friends are hard to come by, and I know that you all have it in you to be great ones. Lily's given Severus another chance. Do you think you could all do the same?" she asked James, Sirius and Remus. Slowly, they all nodded their heads in agreement, and Hermione thought her heart might burst in her chest.
After a few moments of silence, a thought popped into Lily's head. "What is going to happen when you're born though?" the same question Severus had asked.
Hermione hung her head. "To be fair... I'm not quite sure what will happen. My guess, being that I am seventeen,... Myself that will be born in just a few year's time will grow to be seventeen, and on the exact day that I ventured back in time, I as I am now, will most likely disappear on the hour. Though, during the time that I will watch myself grow from afar, I'll have ample time to figure it out. I believe it will all work out quite nicely."
"Your intelligence level is fucking mind-blowing." Sirius exclaimed, eliciting a round of laughter from everyone else.
"Well... Thanks for that, I guess..." Hermione smiled.
That was out of the way. She had earned their trust and their swear not to divulge the information she had given them all, and had even earned Severus a few more good friends. The plan was going smoothly.
