Chapter Nine
After a very thorough snogging session on the couch Harry had come in his pants and been sent to the bathroom to shower. Harry had been mortified but Snape had gently assured him that had been his intention so it was all right.
“But... now we can’t... I mean...”
“I hadn’t intended for us to go very far tonight. Or ever really. Your first time should be with someone you love and care about,” Snape said.
Harry had been indignant at first, wasn’t he attractive enough? Was Snape lying to make him feel better? He’d confessed before he was horny one would think that he’d do anything to try and get Harry into bed not out of it.
He thought about it and realised he wasn’t angry or upset. He was relieved. Sure he was insanely curious about what sex would feel like with either a boy or girl but he knew he wasn’t quite ready for all that stuff yet.
Normally he didn’t really feel like an ordinary teenager, he’d seen a lot more than most of his peers had. He’d killed a man; Dumbledore had reassured him that without Voldemort inside him Quirrell would not have survived the night; he’d been sucked dry by Voldemort’s parasitic spirit inside him. It didn’t make Harry feel any better though. The man’s face had been turned to ash by his hands, not Voldemort’s. It was scary to think about so he often didn’t.
That was enough to set him apart from his peers let alone all the Boy-Who-Lived stuff. However it comforted him a little to know that he was still a fourteen year old and felt and did things a fourteen year old did. He was bollocks at talking to girls, couldn’t get his head around them at all, he found his changing body very odd and confusing at the best of times and at the moment was keen on exploring it himself before letting anyone else touch it. So he was happy with just kissing and a little touching for now. A little too happy with it as his soiled underwear could attest too.
When he finished his shower he walked back into the living room to find Snape had moved from the couch to his desk. He was grading papers and his face was blank which meant he was very frustrated and in no mood for conversation. Harry couldn’t help himself though; he wanted to talk a little more.
“Professor,” Harry said quietly. Snape looked up and raised an eyebrow. “I know you said that for my first time I should wait for someone I love. If I can’t... I mean... if I run out of time... I... would you do it?”
Snape stared at him, his face blank. Harry stared back letting the man take his time to reach his decision.
“Why?”
“Why not?”
“True, but really why?”
“I trust you,” Harry said simply. Snape stared blankly again which meant he was thinking very deeply. Harry waited patiently once more.
“A terrible choice really,” Snape said and Harry smiled. “Very well, I agree, on the condition that you are actually dying, not that you think you will or any other such nonsense and I will check that you truly are. If you are not I will kill you myself,”
“Thank you,” Harry said stepping over and giving the man a kiss on the cheek, “I’m going to bed. Don’t stay up too late, you have detentions tomorrow and I don’t want people asking me to ‘give you some’ so you’re less cranky,”
“I’m always cranky,” Snape muttered. Harry smiled and gave him another quick kiss, this one on the lips before heading off to bed.
The Christmas Holidays had started. A large number of students had stayed behind in the castle in anticipation of the Ball. It was only open to fourth years and above but a fair few third years had gotten dates and Harry knew that a few first years were going with older siblings.
Harry sat beside Ginny who was talking to Colin Creevey and his brother Dennis about the differences between Muggle and Wizarding celebrations. Ginny’s father Arthur Weasley loved Muggles and would probably love to know that at Muggle weddings people usually did a silly dance called the chicken dance.
Colin was at the moment teaching Ginny the dance while Dennis hummed the tune for them both.
Hermione was watching with interest as the two young Gryffindors acted like chickens much to the amusement of their surrounding house mates.
Harry watched the two for a moment before glancing around at the rest of the hall. A few people were watching the impromptu dance off the Gryffindor third years were having but most were laughing and chatting excitedly about the dance, Christmas gifts they’d been hurriedly wrapping and exchanging ideas on what the second task of the Tournament might be. Dragons were pretty hard to top after all.
Someone cleared their throat behind Harry, Ginny and Colin stopped dancing to stare. Harry turned and found Cedric Diggory standing behind him smiling brightly.
“Hi,” he said easily,
“Hey,” Harry said a little confused.
“Can I sit?” he asked glancing between Harry and Ginny. Ginny immediately shuffled over to make room so Harry did the same trying not to overcrowd Lavender Brown sitting on his other side.
Cedric expertly climbed onto the bench easily avoiding kicking Harry as he swung his leg over. Harry had never seen him out of his Quidditch or Hogwarts robes before; it was odd seeing him in ordinary trousers and a hooded jumper with a warm winter cloak over his shoulders. He had a Hufflepuff scarf wrapped round his neck and was holding a pair of gloves so he was prepared to head outside in a little while.
“How are you?” Cedric asked
“Fine, how are you?” Harry replied
“I’m really great actually,” Cedric said and smiled at Harry again. Harry smiled back nervously he was feeling something wasn’t quite right.
“Well that’s good,” Harry said awkwardly glancing to Hermione for help. Hermione had a slight frown on her face and was looking from Cedric to Harry very quickly. Her brain was in overdrive but she hadn’t reached a conclusion yet so there was no help there. Harry turned back to Cedric who was still smiling that charming smile.
“Did you need anything?” Harry asked.
“Oh, well sort of,” Cedric replied suddenly looking a little nervous. “I was wondering if you had a date to the ball yet,”
“The ball? Me?” Harry asked
“Yeah, you,”
“Oh... well I’m going with my husband,” Harry said and Cedric frowned for a moment but then smiled.
“Right... I don’t know how I forgot,” he said,
“Sorry,” Harry said awkwardly.
“Don’t apologise Harry, of course you’d have a date it is only a week before the dance. I just thought it’d be fun to go together. I’ll see you around,” he stood up and left but not before flashing that smile again.
Harry watched him walk away, expecting him to head straight out into the Entrance Hall but he headed over to the Ravenclaw table. He stopped in front of Cho Chang.
Harry stared at them, glad that more than half the hall was also watching. There was silence so they could hear every word spoken between them.
“Hello Cho,” Cedric said
“Oh... hi Cedric,” she said replied quietly. The girl next to her, obviously her friend giggled and nudged Cho’s side with a grin.
“I was wondering if you already had a date to the dance,”
“I... uh... didn’t you just ask Harry Potter?”
“Yes I did,”
“He’s a boy.”
“Yes.”
“So you like boys?”
“Well I like Harry and he’s a boy. I don’t like all boys though.”
“What about me? Do you like me or do you like a lot of different girls?”
“I’m not quite sure,” Cedric said with a shrug. Cho frowned at him thinking hard.
“I’ll go with you Cedric!” Cho’s friend interrupted them eagerly.
“All right then Miss...?”
“Edgecomb, Marietta Edgecomb” she said brightly.
“Good, I’ll meet you in the Entrance Hall at seven,” Cedric said.
He walked away, this time heading out into the grounds. Excited chatter broke out at his exit, rumours running rampant on Cedric’s sexuality.
Harry was still staring at the Ravenclaw table, he couldn’t hear what anyone was saying but Cho looked very upset, and her friend Marietta Edgecomb looked pleased as punch. She was beaming at everyone around her with a very smug smile. Cho seemed to sink down a little in her seat stabbing at her eggs viciously.
“That Edgecomb girl seems quite awful,” Hermione said when Harry turned back to the Gryffindor table.
“I mean honestly, throwing yourself at a guy like that when he’s asking out your friend,” she said and Harry nodded in agreement.
“I should talk to her,” Harry said
“What? Why? You don’t even know her” Hermione said.
“I meant Cho Chang,”
“Oh...” Hermione said, “You don’t really know her either.”
“She’s Ravenclaw’s Seeker,”
“Oh is she?” Hermione asked. Hermione wasn’t all that big on sports. Harry knew that if he hadn’t been on the team Hermione wouldn’t have come to a single game.
“Yeah, I’m going to go talk to her,” Harry said
“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” Hermione asked with a disapproving frown.
Harry didn’t want to know what that was about so he simply stood and headed over to the Ravenclaw table.
“Hey Cho,” Harry said and Cho looked up from her mutilated eggs with a frown.
“Hi Harry,” she said.
“Did you want to go for a walk?” Harry asked. Cho glanced to her friend beside her but Edgecomb was talking to another girl about dresses and shoes.
“Gladly,” Cho said and stood up. She marched past Harry leading the way out of the hall.
Harry caught up with her halfway down to the lake. She was trudging through the thick snow with her arms crossed over her chest and a scowl on her face.
“So... how’s it going?” Harry asked falling into step beside her.
“Great!” Cho snapped. “I just found out my best friend is a total bitch!”
“Sorry about that,” Harry offered and she frowned at him.
“You’re an odd boy Harry Potter,” she said.
“You just looked like you could use someone to talk to; Hermione says I’m a good listener,”
“Oh does she?” Cho asked with a small smile and Harry nodded.
“So you walk around in the freezing cold with a girl you don’t really know just because you’re a good listener?”
“Well... I was also hoping we might be friends,”
“Friends?”
“Yeah... I mean you’re really pretty and-”
“Ah there it is,” Cho said and Harry frowned.
“There what is?”
“You’re only being nice because I’m pretty,”
“No, that’s not it at all!”
“But it’s one of the reasons. All anyone sees when they look at me is a pretty face; of course I’m not worth getting to know. All Cedric wanted was someone to play the role of a pretty arm accessory to cover up his feelings for you. Then you come along all sweet and nice! I know what you’re doing; trying to convince me to act as a cover so you and your boyfriend can have a fun time at the dance without his parents finding out. Well I’m not that girl so you can just fuck off!”
“I... I just thought we could be friends because we’re both in short supply of them these days and you seem like a nice enough person from what I’ve seen. I thought we have pretty similar interests; we both like Quidditch and we both have really mean best friends. Now I realise that you probably deserve a friend like Marietta Edgecomb because you’re just like her!”
Harry turned and stormed away. He would talk to Hermione; maybe she could explain why all girls were going so crazy about this stupid dance. For now though he wanted to sulk. He couldn’t believe that Cho had spoken to him like that. She had seemed so nice and then become rather nasty. Harry was noticing that about a lot of pretty girls actually, they were nice when they wanted to be but then became mean very quickly and for seemingly no reason at all.
He wandered around the castle aimlessly for over an hour before he headed up to the Gryffindor tower to speak with Hermione. She wasn’t in the common room so Harry had to ask one of the fifth year girls to go up and get her.
Boys weren’t allowed up the girl’s dormitory staircase, a loud alarm would sound and the stairs turned into a slide preventing anyone from going up for over an hour.
Hermione came down the stairs quickly with the fifth year girl behind her, Harry thanked her and she went off to sit with her friends.
Harry and Hermione headed over to the couches by the fire and Hermione picked up her charms text book, it had been sitting there for a while, open to the page she needed. She fiddled with the pages while Harry talked.
Hermione was very clever, much too clever for her own good. She had immediately worked out everything making Harry feel much better.
“It’s not you she’s mad at,” Hermione said simply. “She’s mad at Cedric, what he did was humiliating to her. Imagine if Cho came over and asked me out and when I said no turned to you and asked you out. It’s awful, not only do you feel like you’re the second choice you feel kind of like the last resort because you’re not even the right sex.”
“Oh... I guess that would be kind of horrible,”
“So don’t worry; it’s nothing to do with you. She was angry at her friend and Cedric, not you at all. Unfortunately you were nearby when she went off that’s all,” Hermione said and Harry nodded.
He leant back on the couch and Hermione turned to her charms text book and began to take some notes for the assignment they’d been given for the break. Harry glanced around the Gryffindor Common room carefully. He always loved coming back up here, it was just so cosy and warm. Hogwarts was his home and the common room was a huge part of that. His rooms with Snape were a little like home too but there was so much Snape not a lot of Harry in those rooms. He’d been trying though, leaving his things scattered all over the place. Snape hadn’t moved them or destroyed them which always made him feel better.
The Dursley’s always made sure there was no trace of Harry anywhere in the house outside his bedroom.
“I hear that Cedric and Cho both have detention tonight,” Hermione said suddenly.
“Really?” Harry asked and Hermione nodded.
“With Snape,” she added and Harry frowned.
“Both of them... have detention... tonight... with Snape...” she repeated slowly.
“I feel you’re trying to slow walk me to something but I’m just not catching up here,” Harry said blankly.
“He did it for you!”
“What?”
“Snape! He’s protecting you, Cedric was moving in on his territory and Cho hurt your feelings!” Hermione said.
“He isn’t Hermione,” Harry said dismissively. “You’re reading too much into this. He had no idea I went and talked with Cho and I don’t think he’d give Cedric a detention just for asking me out.”
“Well why don’t you just ask him?”
“Why on earth would I want to do that? That would be just picking a fight,” Harry said, “Which with Snape is just a really dangerous thing to do okay?”
“Trust me Harry. Just ask,” Hermione insisted.
“All right fine, I’ll go ask,” Harry said standing up heading for the door, “but this counts as your Christmas present.”
“It had better not be Harry Potter!” Hermione called after him.
Harry waved her off and climbed through the portrait hole. He made his way through the dark chilling castle passing only a few other students heading off to their common rooms after a tiring day playing around in the snow. One girl was drenched and shivering her two friends had wrapped their cloaks around her shoulders and were apologising for pummelling her with snowballs.
Harry walked into his rooms and looked around seeing the Snape wasn’t here he turned and headed off to the man’s office. He wasn’t here either and Harry remembered the detentions so he headed to the Potions classroom.
Snape was behind his desk and Harry strode right up to him.
“Potter, there are times when I am your husband and times when I’m your teacher. Right now I am your teacher so you cannot just come barging in here without knocking,”
“Sorry Professor,” Harry said pointedly, “but I wanted to ask you something,”
“I am busy. So if you don’t want to join your little fan club in cleaning cauldrons I’d keep moving,” Snape said and glared over to the corner. Harry turned and found Cedric and Cho staring at him, Cho glared and Cedric smiled. Harry smiled back at Cedric which seemed to irritate Cho who scowled and scrubbed harder at the cauldron she was cleaning.
Harry turned back to Snape who stared back at him blankly.
“Well just let me know when you’re back to being my husband, I have a spousal question,” Harry said
“Wait for me in our rooms then, when I return there I am your husband once more,”
“Ugh... fine,”
“Sir,” Snape said and gave Harry a warning stare. No sass. Harry rolled his eyes.
“Ugh... fine sir,” Harry repeated using the same tone and inflection he had the sentence before. Snape gave a small satisfied nod and shooed him away.
Harry had made it halfway to the door when Cho spoke up
“Does he call you sir in bed as well Professor?” Cho asked snottily.
“No Miss Chang he doesn’t, he tries to say some things but it mostly comes out in gasps and moans,” Snape said. Cho’s jaw dropped open, so did Harry’s, Cedric’s eyebrows rose and he glanced between Harry and Snape nervously.
“A month’s detention with Filch starting this Saturday,” Snape said
“But that’s the night of the Ball!” Cho cried.
“Well I’m sure your... date... will be ever so disappointed,” Snape said with a smirk. “Mr Diggory you are done for the night, I think Miss Chang can finish the rest herself,”
Cedric practically ran from the room, Cho sighed and continued with her scrubbing.
Snape glanced up at Harry and shooed him away again. Harry turned and left, heading back to their rooms to wait on the couch. He didn’t feel very much like doing any work so he sat watching the fire, Tipple popped in and gave him some marshmallows to roast while he waited.
Snape arrived nearly an hour later and Harry stared up at him not even attempting to talk with a mouthful of marshmallows. Snape would no doubt find it disgusting and be put in an even worse mood then the one he walked in with.
He stripped off his teaching robe without even glancing at Harry tossing it onto a hook by the door before heading to the couch and sitting down heavily.
Harry made his way over and sat down beside him.
“Did you give Cedric and Cho those detentions for me?”
“What are you babbling about?”
“Hermione said you were protecting me,”
“Miss Granger seems to have a very over romanticised idea of me; I wonder how that would have happened?”
“Well I certainly didn’t tell her. In fact I’ve been telling anyone who’ll listen what a jerk you are,” Harry said with a careless shrug.
“This marriage is ruining my reputation. Minerva thinks I’ve gone soft,”
“I’m sure she won’t think that when she catches sight of the house points tomorrow. Ravenclaw is in negatives,”
“No, she’ll jump to the same conclusion Miss Granger did,”
“Because it’s true?” Harry hinted softly and Snape raised an eyebrow.
“It’s irrelevant. Miss Chang will suffer the consequences of that vulgar mouth of hers and Mr Diggory has learned his lesson about running through the halls,”
“Oh, Cedric was running through the halls was he? That’s why he got a detention,” Harry said.
“Yes,” Snape said simply.
“Right, sure,” Harry muttered getting up. Snape took hold of his wrist stopping him from walking away.
“I’m going to bed,” Harry said.
Snape tugged him down and kissed him softly.
“Good night.”
“Good night,” Harry replied and headed off to bed.
He lay awake for a long while. Snape didn’t come to bed but Harry was thankful. The man had done as Harry had asked and was not being hot or cold. He had kissed Harry because he wanted to. He’d done it many times in the past but it had been a simple goodnight kiss. Strangely it felt far more intimate then any of the other kisses they’d shared before.
Snape hadn’t really been thinking when he’d done it, just simply done it. He was acting on his feelings. His feelings for Harry.
He had feelings for Harry and Harry was feeling very pleased about that indeed.
He’d fought with Ron about it, denying he had feelings for his teacher but he couldn’t deny them. He did like Severus Snape.
Neville had been right when he’d defended Harry, he couldn’t help who he loved and though he didn’t love Snape he certainly liked him and that was okay. Harry was allowed to be happy, he was allowed to like people and it didn’t matter what anyone else thought.
Harry fell into a fairly peaceful sleep after that. He awoke feeling refreshed and headed for the shower. Snape was gone, Harry didn’t know if he’d come to bed at all.
Harry made his way into the Great Hall for a late breakfast and found a slightly unusual sight.
Ron was sitting with Hermione, he was talking to her, he looked a little sad and angry, probably trying to apologise and Hermione wasn’t budging apparently.
Harry headed over not sure if Hermione wanted or needed him to step in, “Hey guys,”
“Hi Harry” they said together, Hermione shot Ron a frown when he spoke with her.
“So, what’s new?” Harry asked sitting down opposite them.
“Ron has just asked me to the Ball,” Hermione said quietly.
“Cutting it close there Ron,” Harry said and Ron shrugged.
“Well I’ve asked around and no one else will go with me,” he said
“All the pretty girls taken then?” Hermione shot at him with a glare.
“Please Hermione!”
“I’m already going with someone else,”
“No you’re not,” Ron snorted dismissively.
“Yes! I am!”
“Look I’m sorry I hurt your feelings all right. You should know better than anyone that I really don’t think before I speak. Now will you please go to the Ball with me?” Ron said. He sounded pretty sincere. Hermione sighed heavily and gave Ron an apologetic smile,
“I accept your apology. I really hope we’re still friends.”
“Of course we are, don’t be daft,” Ron said and Hermione smiled brightly.
“Now I’m sorry, I really am going to the Ball with someone else,” Hermione said quietly. Ron’s mouth fell open and he stared at her.
“What? Who?”
“It doesn’t matter. I’m already taken. I have heard Parvati Patil is still looking for a date though,”
“Parvati?” Ron moaned
“Well you shouldn’t have left it to the last minute,” Hermione said carelessly, “or been so picky.”
“I’ll go ask her now then,” Ron said and stood up.
“Wait!” Hermione ordered and Ron froze mid-way up staring at her in alarm. “There’s someone else you owe an apology to,”
“Oh... right,” Ron said and looked to Harry. “I’m really sorry about what I said; I was bang out of line. I’m meant to be your friend and well... friends don’t do that to each other,”
“No they don’t,” Harry said “But I know you won’t be doing it again so you’re forgiven.”
“No I think the whole school has learned their lesson not to mess with you Harry, Ravenclaw’s house points are in the negatives and Hufflepuff is down to fifty-eight,” Hermione said with a small grin.
“Did I miss something?” Ron asked staring between Harry and Hermione.
“I’ll fill you in while we go find Parvati,” Harry said standing up and Ron gave him a grin.
They headed out of the hall together and up the stairs to the Gryffindor common room. On the way Harry told Ron about what had happened yesterday and Hermione’s theory on it.
“Well she’s probably right, she’s dead on about those sorts of things,” Ron said
“I know, but it just doesn’t really seem like Snape. Seems kind of petty,”
“Yeah and picking on a student because his dad was mean to you in school is absolutely nothing like that,” Ron said and Harry frowned at him.
Harry didn’t get to reply they’d made it to the Gryffindor common room and nearly crashed into Parvati and Lavender who were on their way out.
“Hello Harry,” Parvati said while Lavender just smiled.
“Hi,” he replied then looked at Ron expectantly.
“Oh, hi Ron,” Parvati added awkwardly.
“Yeah, hi, I was wondering if you had a date to the Ball yet.”
“Uh... no, I don’t actually,” Parvati said blushing bright red.
“Did you want to go with me?” Ron asked he had also blushed bright red. It was clashing horribly with his hair.
Lavender started to giggle which set Pavarti off. Ron started to get angry but Harry placed a calming hand on his shoulder. They waited till the girls giggles subsided and then Parvati smiled
“I’d like that,” she said
“Great, thanks, it’ll be great,” Ron said and she nodded with a small smile.
The two boys stepped aside and let the girls carry on with their journey.
“Ugh... that giggle,” Ron shuddered
“Just don’t make her laugh,” Harry suggested and Ron stared at him.
“Have you met me before Harry? She’ll be laughing all night I’m bloody hilarious.”
“It’s a curse I’m sure,” Harry said dryly.
“This dance was a horrible idea, I feel like punching Dumbledore,”
“I don’t think it was his idea,” Harry muttered, “Also coming from someone who’s seen you fighting before I think he’d be able to take you.”
“Oh, ouch Harry, I’m wounded,”
“Come on you idiot, I missed being able to goof off, I think you owe me a chess match,”
Ron eagerly disappeared up to the dorms to get his battered old chess set and they spent the day like that catching up and laughing together like they’d never even had a fight.
Harry smiled; this was exactly the way it was supposed to be.
A little chapter today I’m afraid. I hate short chapters just as much as you do I’m sure but the Christmas/Yule Ball chapter just needs to be one chapter and I’d already started this one. I didn’t want it half here and then half in the next one. So there’s that and also I have some questions for you this time guys based off some of the reviews and also just because I’m a curious person.
So answer for me these questions three...
One, how old do you think I am? Had a comment that I seemed very young so I was just wondering if I write that way and if I am coming across like that do you like it? Do you want me to try and write... I don’t know better or more mature or whatever? I thought I was doing quite well but let me know.
Two, any Marshmallows in the house? If you are one you’ll know what I’m talking about. If not you’ll just think I’m weird.
Three, I wrote this chapter while listening to Delta Goodrems discography. Like all her albums honest to goodness, just over and over again. Any Delta fans here? If not what kind of music do you like to relax to? I need some chill out songs when I’m writing, nothing too exciting.
Until next time my friends, Nina
