Chapter 8
Sighing, James looked at the letter Lily had just passed to him. Shaking his head, he dropped it on the table then leaned back in the chair. “What do you think, Lily?”
“I think this is something we should do,” she told her husband softly. “It's the only way we might be able to get some form of contact with Harry. At least for now. If nothing else, we can get a better feel for what we're dealing with when it comes to the situation and where it stands.”“I don't see this as a bad idea,” Albus said after picking up the letter and reading it again. “It's neutral territory with a licensed therapist. That alone should end issues of fighting. It might be Harry's therapist, at least that's what this says, and he won't allow an all-out battle to come. This may be what you need, James.”Rubbing a hand over his face, James looked over at the letter and shook his head again. “We shouldn't have to do this to talk to our son!”“It's the only way we have,” Lily said quietly, looking down. “We made mistakes, big ones, and this is the outcome. We just have to deal with it and move on now. This might be the way to taking a step in the right direction. At least we can get a better understanding of just how big the problems are. With all we've found out from the papers, those have to be major. Let's see what's said and go from there.”Not sure what to say, James sighed then looked between the two. Without saying a word, he just nodded.“I'll answer the letter and we'll set it up,” Lily told him, grabbing some parchment and a quill. “It'll just be us, Severus and Remus, no one else. We'll see what those two have to say and build from what comes.”“With Snape involved, nothing's going to come from it,” James told her, voice containing a slight snarl. “You know him, Lily, better than I do. I doubt much has changed over the years.”“Remus will be there. You know him, James. He's reasonable,” Lily soothed as she penned the response.“From what we saw the other day, he wasn't that reasonable,” James shot right back, looking angry. Shaking his head, he sighed, “Look, this is bad, I get it. Worse than anything we could have ever imagined. We need a chance here, though. They need to see that. I'm not sure what Harry is really like, but he can't be that different from than Jamie. They just need to let us talk to him, that's all. We'll be able to work with it from there. Whatever the hell they're doing, though, isn't what he needs. You saw the way he was dressed the other night and that place they took him! That cannot be helping whatever he's dealing with.”“I think we need to withhold judgment on that until we hear just what it was,” she told her husband firmly, folding up the parchment when she finished. Summoning their owl, she affixed it to the bird's leg then sent him off. “It may make sense when we hear it.”Giving a snort, James shook his head. “This—the whole damned mess shouldn't be this hard to sort out. I get we screwed up. No one has to tell us that. We did what we thought was best. Now we realize we messed up. Everyone just needs to back the hell off and give us another chance to make this right. There isn't a damned thing we can do to fix anything if people keep having at us. And that's all that's happening! The papers, everyone we once knew, our friends, all of them. Harry—we won't even discuss that. That's, maybe, the one I get and can see. At least part of it. We knew he'd be angry. Just not like this.”“I think, in this case, you need to withhold judgment until after this talk, on many things,” Albus said softly, reaching out to pat James on the shoulder. “Maybe they can give you some kind of understanding why Harry is the way he is or what's going on there. Once you know, you can see what you can manage. I'm not sure what to counsel with this, James. From what was in the papers, I don't have a feel for how bad the situation was or Harry's mental state. What we counted on has been turned on its ear. Now I don't know. Once you finish this and we discuss it, I might be able to give you some advice to help.”Slouching, James nodded. Quietly, so that only the two at the table could hear, though there was no one else around anyway, he said, “I love my son and just want to be in his life. If I could go back and undo this, I would. Just—someone needs to give me the chance to tell him that and have him listen.”“We both want that, James,” Lily told him gently, reaching over to put a hand on his arm. “He's our son, no matter who the courts say are his father's now. Let's go about it this way and see what comes of it. Maybe, if nothing else, we can press to allow them to let Harry come in and talk to us that way. Once we hear what he has to say on the matter, we can move on from there. We need to understand where he's at, though, to do anything.”Nodding slowly, James said, “Alright. Let's see what we can do. While we deal with this, we press on and deal with the rest. That's going to be just as bad. School, the press, the reaming, all of that on top of figuring out what the other side of this mess is actually doing. That needs to come as well because we know he's back. It's just a matter of time before he shows his ugly face again.”“And before that happens, we need to get something in place to deal with it,” Albus said firmly. “Which means I need to start working on all the contacts I can get. From what I've been able to gather, just bits and bobs, obviously, many suspect this, including those close to Severus and Remus. We just need information. That won't be easy to come by, but we'll manage. I have contacts here and there I can work with to get some of it. Once I have that, we’ll be able to make plans.”
“Alright, you work on that, let Lily and I did deal with the kids. We need to prepare them for what they're going to face. Then deal with this mess with Harry. Hopefully, we have enough time before this all hits.” James sighed, shaking his head.“We should,” Albus told him with a nod. “As always, we just go with what we have and do the best we can.”
Sighing, Remus looked at the copy of what Harry's Mind Healer sent to them, the letter to Lily and James, then passed it over to Harry for him to see. This way, their son knew what they were trying to do and that no one was hiding anything from him. “Hopefully, they will respond to that and agree. If they do, Severus and I are going to lay everything out for them when it comes to what you're dealing with. It's our hope that they will back off. We're not counting on that, but we hope to drive the point home as much as we can as to what's going on here.”
“At the very least, maybe they might not be so overt about it,” Severus added, looking at his son. “I'm quite sure the two are planning something for this to talk to you in some way. We hope that doing this might curtail it slightly.”Reading it over, brow furrowed as he did, Harry then passed it to Sirius and shook his head. He didn't know what to say about that, honestly. After reading the letter, Sirius tossed it onto the table then said, “It's not going to work. They are going to keep trying. Even letting Harry have at them won't work. James, unless he's changed a lot, something I doubt, is just going to end up angry when Harry refuses to have anything to do with him. Then he's going to lash out. That won't end well.”“Oh, just let him try with me,” Harry said, tone deadly, looking around as he held Bugs, petting him. “I don't put up with that shite.”“Something we are going to make crystal clear,” Severus told him firmly. “We won't allow him to do that, Harry, we promise. If he tries, we'll handle it.”“We aren't going to involve you in any way,” Remus assured Harry gently. “It's just going to be us, that's all. We're going to be as blunt and graphic as we can when it comes to this. Hopefully, that will stop it.”Sighing, Sirius shook his head. “Look, don't get me wrong, I think this is the right way to go about it. You know James, Remus, just as well as I do. Unless he's really changed, something we haven't seen so far, it's not going to work. He's just going to get more overt and frustrated if it doesn't go his way. Then he's going to try to make it up to everyone. That's not going to work either as he tended to go about that the wrong way as well. He—well, you know what he was like. He wants what he wants and will do anything to get it. I see him trying that here. I also don't see him handling parts of this well. Since he has his own kids, he's going to want Harry to toe the line he's set for them and is going to throw a fit when we don't do it that way, no matter the reason.”“I know,” Remus sighed gloomily, shaking his head. “We're prepared for that. It's our hope that we can drive parts home, even small ones, then go from there. There's also the fact that we're prepared because we know what he used to be like. That can only help. If he reverts back to the way he used to be, we'll know how to handle it.”“We're also going to go this afternoon and talk to the Mind Healer then lay that out so he's prepared. That way, if those signs start showing, we can work with it and he can explain it won't work as well as why it won't.” Severus told him, looking between the two on the opposite side of the table. “Let us handle it and we'll go from there. If it looks to heading south, we'll make sure the two of you know to prepare for it.”“Alright,” Sirius sighed, shaking his head again. “Just, no offense, but I don't see this doing anything with James. Lily it might, as she was reasonable. James—no.”“If all else fails, she may be able to rein him in,” Remus told his old friend. “You know she can do that if she wants, or could. If we slap her hard enough, she will. She proved that to all of us over the years.”“Just relax on the topic until we tell you to worry,” Severus said. Changing topics, he began to inquire about what the two planned while they were gone. Normally, they didn't go anywhere alone, but he wanted to hear their plans.
Groaning as he looked at the hand Harry showed him, Sirius shook his head then laughed, “Explain to me again why I play cards with you? I always get my arse handed to me when I do!” They were seated on the bed they shared, playing a few hands to pass the time. Neither felt like going out, so they were just having some fun until Severus and Remus came back. After that, the four of them were going out to dinner at a small pizza place not far from the house, a restaurant they all loved.
“'Cause it's fun,” Harry laughed, leaning back against the foot board of the bed.“There is that,” Sirius agreed with a grin. Looking at the younger man as he picked up the cards and began to shuffle them, he asked, quietly, “You doing alright other than what we've seen? We're worried about you, you know.”“I'm alright. Pissed, outraged, upset and all that mixed in with plenty of other things, but dealing,” Harry admitted with a shrug.“Yeah, I get it,” Sirius sighed as he continued to shuffle the deck. “The same as the rest of us then. Just keep in mind you've dealt with worse and move on. We're going to keep right on doing what we are. Screw them if they don't like it.”Picking up Bugs when he hopped up on the bed, Harry nodded. “Yeah, I'm trying. It's just—moronic. And infuriating. That's all. All of it.”“You'll get no arguments from me on that either,” Sirius admitted. “I can't say I don't want to find the lot of them and start throwing hexes myself. It's bullshite.”“Your end has to be just about as bad as mine,” Harry said softly, stroking Bug's ears.“It's not fun,” Sirius told him. “Everything I went through could have been avoided if they put something in place before they decided to take a runner. They didn't.” Shaking his head, he added, “I'm trying not to let it bug me too much. I have something now that's well worth it. Our relationship is something I love.” Chuckling and grinning again, he admitted, “I'm still lost as to what you see in me, but I like it!”“You're a sexy beast, that's what,” Harry laughed. Shaking his head, he admitted, “That's part of it, I admit it. It's not all.” Seeing Sirius look at him, he explained, “You've always treated me differently than everyone else. Remus and Sirius are the parents. They've always acted like that. Lucius is something else entirely, like a protector of some sort. You've always been like the combination of best friend, trouble-making partner and all that, not really someone that's kinda' an adult-type authority figure. That's where most of it comes from. It just grew from there.”“Yeah, I'm not one that's real big on behaving and being the adult in situations,” Sirius admitted with a chuckle and a sheepish grin, scratching his chin. “I never was. I do what I have to when the situation presents itself, but I'd rather have fun and muck about.”“Which I like,” Harry admitted. “Plus, I trust you. You're not going to do anything to me, I know that. Even that first night, when you sat and talked to me through everything, like the surgery, there was a feeling that you weren't going to. It's just built from there.” Looking at the bed, he admitted, “I don't trust most, you know that. Somewhere in me, I realized, especially after moving in here, that I probably wouldn't be able to go out, meet someone and form a relationship that way because I just can't trust like that. This—it was great and what I wanted. I have everything with you that most would get from those things. It's perfect as far as I'm concerned. I've been attracted to you since the beginning, though you usually aren't the type I liked. We have fun, we do all kinds of things, we like each other, so it works for me. I like it and don't care what anyone else thinks.”That was really the first time that Harry had explained the attraction to him so Sirius nodded, but was pleased. It was put in a way he could easily understand and he liked it. Snorting, he said, “Yeah, according to Snape, we're on about the same maturity level. And I don't see that as a bad thing. Your age and who you are were problems for me, I admit it. The rest though, it more than overrode that part. The stint in prison, even though I didn't do what they said, bothers many. There will always be doubt in some people’s minds that I was involved, though that should be laid to rest now. Most know what Dementors are like and don't want to be around anyone that's had to stay around them for extended periods of time because it causes problems for you. That doesn't bug you a bit. Plus, we have all kinds of fun, something I missed all those years being locked up. I like it.” Grinning again, he added, “And you're damned sexy yourself.”Grinning at the compliment, Harry nodded. “The prison bit? Doesn’t bug me in the least. I was around criminals all the time. Most of us—we did what we had to so we could survive. Some kinds of those—yeah, I have no tolerance for them. Being sent to prison doesn’t mean much to me. Hell, plenty I was around thought it was a badge of honor, something that kept them safe. I don't see it that way, obviously, but I get the mentality. It's like the bullet scar for me. Besides, you didn't do it. Everyone made that damned clear from the start to me. So, I don't get the big deal over it.”“It makes it nice that it's not an issue with you,” Sirius admitted softly. “It shouldn't be, but it is. I still get comments, though they try to make sure I don't hear them.”“Screw them if they don't like it,” Harry shrugged.“My thought exactly,” Sirius told him with a firm nod. “You? Well, you're different than most I even ever thought of dating. The age is a big one there. I admit that. The rest? Honestly, I've not ever gone out with anyone that likes to do the kind of things you do. Shite, we have a ton of fun doing all kinds of strange shite! The girls I went out with wouldn't have gone for that stuff. Neither would the guys, actually. Most wanted to just do the traditional thing. That gets boring after a while. I like going with you because you come up with some of the strangest off the wall shite I've ever seen and it's a right riot to do! Like the go-cart races. Those were fun and we have to do it again sometime. That costume shite was too, though it was strange. Same with so many others. If I even proposed doing that with some I dated, I would have never seen them again. This is great as far as I'm concerned.”“I didn't get to do that kind of stuff growing up,” Harry shrugged. “You lot let me now and come with, so I like it. It's fun! We don't have to be all serious and can just enjoy ourselves, forgetting all the problems for a while. It's great! I would just get bored with going and sitting somewhere just to talk. We do that all the time while doing other things. I'd rather be active.”“I'm not bitching in the least as its great,” Sirius told him with a firm nod. Snickering and starting to grin, Sirius asked, “What say we kick the cards, find the marshmallow shooters and go to war? We can muck about and wait for the other two to come home then nail them.”Laughing, Harry nodded, “Let's do it! Ambush!”
Tossing the cards on the table by the bed, Sirius leaned forward and kissed Harry then bailed off the bed to find the shooters, cackling.
Conjuring a shield to stop the barrage of marshmallows he and Remus were being pelted with, Severus let out a long suffering sigh, though was amused by the ambush. Hearing Remus snort in laughter behind him, he shook his head and said, “This is rather infantile, don't you think? Let me guess; your idea, Black?”
Levitating the two weapons from his hiding place then finding another, Sirius shouted, “Of course, Snape! Have to involve you in the fun as well.”Getting Severus from the side where the shield didn't cover, Harry laughed. “Come on, it'll be fun!”Picking up the ‘weapons’ and loading them with the marshmallows that Sirius tossed in their direction, Remus said, “I say we take the teamwork approach here, Severus. You shield and keep an eye out while I do the firing.”Looking smug, wand still out, Severus said, “That's acceptable! Ready when you are, Remus.”“Hey, no fair! This is one on one here!” Harry shouted.“There are no rules, as you've clearly stated in past battles,” Severus replied smugly, looking around.“Well, shite! Looks like it's time for teamwork, Harry. Us against them.” Sirius laughed, sliding over to where he thought Harry was, keeping an eye on Remus.Laughing, Harry motioned Sirius over to where he was. “That works. You two are in real trouble now! Let's get 'em, Sirius!”“Oh, I think we can hold our own,” Remus said, hoisting the 'weapon' while looking around.“Oh yes,” Severus added, trying to get a lock on the two. “Let the mayhem begin!” This wasn't expected, but he would go with it. Besides, such things were always fun and it would be a way to let off steam from all the stress they had been dealing with. Plus, no one ever got hurt other than a mild sting from the marshmallows when they hit.Dragging Harry with him, Sirius kept the shooter up and ducked into another room, waiting. “You wish, Snape!” This was going to be fun!
This is a marshmallow shooter, for those that don't know what they are.

You can even get them in 'handgun' sizes, ones that fire multiple mini marshmallows at once and 'bazookas', as you can see below.
