Chapter 9
Sighing, Narcissa looked around at the mass of papers, books, whatnot, on the small table in the room Sirius, Bill and Harry were sharing. This was a mess. Though Remus and Lucius had managed to streamline the information and group it, something that made it easier to look up bits, it was still—there was so much here. And they weren't getting anywhere. Despite all the information, they weren't getting anywhere figuring so much out. Which meant they needed to come up with something else.
Folding her hands on the table, eying a stack of books, she said, “We need to start looking at this a different way. If we do that, we might get further.”“How?” Bill asked, leaning back in his chair, looking at her.“I don't know,” Narcissa admitted, shaking her head. “All I know is we're getting nowhere with how we're going about this. Oh, we have information. An almost overload of it, in fact. It's just not pulling together, which means we're missing something.”“Any clue what that might be?” Sirius inquired. “Everyone is giving up everything they can think of when it comes to what they're dealing with.”Brow furrowed as she glanced at the latest 'reports' of what was going on, Narcissa reached out and picked them up. Leafing through them, something began to click. “Let me ask this; in all you're gathering, is it just a list of physical symptoms, like what's manifesting, the tether and such, or are we including anything mental?”“What do you mean by mental?” Harry wondered, confused by that as it could mean many things.“Like what you are feeling, experiencing that way, bits like that,” Narcissa explained.Picking up the 'master log', as they were calling it, Sirius flipped through the book and said, while reading, tone distracted, “There is some here that is mental, like what is bond related, such as what I felt when Harry and Bill were in the shower. What is there, though, doesn't go into anything beyond that. Why?”Starting to drum her fingers on the table, she said, “I think, maybe, we need to start looking at what you all are experiencing mentally. At least a little. I don't mean personal, private thoughts, more like how it relates. Let's see what we have there and add it to what we know.”“Not sure what you mean by that,” Bill admitted with a shake of his head. “Can you explain it?”“It's like the acceptance and cooperation. That's more of a mental area than a physical one. If we can find out just what steps were taken, mentally, to get where you are it can help,” Narcissa explained the best she could. “Or what was said leading up to some parts. Let's see what we can manage with that.” Sighing, she shook her head then added, quietly, “That's one that I might have to take on privately with some and someone else take with others.”Scratching his chin, Sirius looked at her. “Not sure about how comfortable we'll be with this, Cissy.”“I know,” Narcissa assured him, putting a hand on his arm. “I don't want to get too personal, but get some. Like—well, you told us you and Harry talked before joining Bill in the shower. What exactly was said? That might help, Sirius.”Not seeing that as too personal, Harry shrugged and said, “I just told him that I didn't think alone time was happening anymore. We're all together in this. Not exactly sure how I worded it, but it was something like that. Then we just mucked about, having fun.”Taking that in, Narcissa nodded slowly. “Acceptance. Complete acceptance.” Looking at Sirius, she asked, “Has there been anything mental on your end that would lean you there as well? All of you have the longest tether. Harry and Bill—well, the established relationship there factors in, we're sure of it.”Thinking over some of his mental process about it, Sirius gave a slow nod. “There's been some, yes. And it has to do with acceptance as well.”“If I can ask--,” Narcissa began softly, trailing off.Groaning, Sirius wasn't sure what to say. It was personal and he hadn't discussed it yet.“It's not going to go any further, Sirius. I won't write it down or anything, the same with what Harry said. I just want to know to see if it does figure in,” she told him.“It's not like we're going to say anything or object,” Bill chuckled, looking at him.“Or poke fun,” Harry added softly.Smiling at that, Sirius nodded. Thinking over how to word it, he finally said, “It has to do with me liking it. It's not what any of us wanted, but I like it. I get to spend all the time I want with Harry, something I haven't been able to do over the years. And I can protect him. Plus, we can get to know each other better.” Shrugging, he added, “And I like how we sleep at night. Bill is on one side and I'm on the other with Harry curled up between us.” That's where he stopped, not wanting to go into anymore.Taking that in, Narcissa began to nod slowly. “I think all this factors in, Sirius. All of it. I honestly don't think anyone else has accepted the situation like the three of you have. Remus and Lucius are doing quite well from what they tell me. They don't have issues the way the others are. Oh, the first couple nights there were several shouting matches, both admit to that, but they have calmed down. I just don't think they have accepted parts of it the way you three have.” Looking between Bill and Harry, she asked, “Is the acceptance the same with both of you?”“I think so,” Harry told her. Giving a shrug, he added, “I mean, there is no undoing this. We know that. And it could be worse, a lot worse. We all get along and have a great relationship, so we might as well do it together rather than fight it.”“Exactly,” Bill nodded. “I can't say that I wouldn't have liked to have Harry alone, but Sirius adds another dimension to it and I'm not unhappy about that. We muck about, have fun, talk, play games, plot, whatever. It's great. We've made the best of what's here and are pressing on. We talk about problems, work out what issues there are and such. Sirius has stood up to Dad on topics. No one has done that before with me. I liked it.”Looking between the three, Narcissa thought it over then said, tone slightly distracted, “I think the three of you have an acceptance and relationship unlike any of the others. I know that the prior relationship probably factors in, but you've accepted everything in a way no one else has. That probably explains the tether you have. The lengthening—my guess is it had to do with what Harry said. It cemented that this is a relationship that involves all of you now. All of you finally accepted that. I don't think it was the shower that did that, but what was said.”Pondering that, Sirius gave a slow nod, then looked to Harry and Bill, both of whom were glancing at him. “That might be. My stance was they deserved time together alone. It was Harry that talked me into joining them.”“Which changed an internal stance and pushed it further towards acceptance,” Narcissa said, tone taking on a more determined bent. “I think we can use this. It won't be the same, of course, and I won't give up what you told me, but I can impart the lessons. It's something we need to do, actually. Severus and the twins are getting along better. Lucius and Remus—that's obvious, of course. Draco and Charlie, though, are troublesome. Let me see what I can manage. We need to get everyone together soonest about the mess that’s coming. The quicker we can push everyone to truly accepting there is no changing this, the better we're going to be. I'll start to work on it today.”“We do need that meeting, Narcissa,” Bill told her with a sigh. “I take it there is progress with that spell?”“There is,” Narcissa assured him. “Give the three of them time. You three—there shouldn't be a problem applying it as you're doing better than anyone else. I think the issue is going to come in with Charlie and Draco.” Giving a sad sigh, she shook her head, “I'm not sure what we can do with that end. It's—well, it's a problem. I'm trying to work with what's there, but that's taking time as well. If it comes down to it, there might be another way. It's something I want to pass along to Lucius and Remus. I'll also talk to Charlie and Draco about it. Let me see what I can do.”“We'll get with Lucius and Remus about part of this and pass it along,” Sirius told her. “I don't think we have the gentle touch you do, but I'm sure we can get some things across tactfully enough to get you the answers you need. That and pass along what we just figured out.”“Please do,” Narcissa said, pleased. “It would be better for you to explain it rather than me try to get it across in a note.” Now she just had to figure out how to get the same answers from everyone else. That wouldn't be nearly as easy. Pressing on, she mentioned what Lucius and Remus had done about getting another room and suggested that all be allowed to do that to give them roaming room. As expected, Sirius didn't care and told her to tell everyone to send him a note or whatever about it. He even suggested that some change rooms so they had more space. That made her happy as well and was something she planned to pass along.
“You have your wand back, that's good,” Narcissa said with a smile, nodding, as she looked at her son. “And the tether?”
“It's longer,” Draco told her, still clutching his wand. Since being without it, he refused to let it go.“Not up to what it was, but longer. We can at least use the toilet alone,” Charlie sighed.“Which is an improvement,” Narcissa said, looking between the two. “I think we have a hint as to what can give you a longer tether.” Seeing intent looks, she went through what she just learned from the other three, without giving details, then said, “It's all about acceptance and cooperation. Keep that in mind. The more you work together and mentally accept it, and mean it, the more of a tether you seem to get. Bill was able to get midway down the stairs to the first floor before being pulled. They can shut the door. So, I think you should all work on that. It won't be easy, but it's probably what you need.”“I don't want to accept this,” Draco told her softly, shaking his head.“I don't think you have a choice, Draco. There is no breaking it from what we're finding,” Narcissa told him gently. “Which means, you have to accept it at some point.”Groaning, Charlie's head dropped back. He didn't want to ponder that, though he knew it was right. “I'll try,” he finally sighed.“Just work on the tether and see what you can do. I think the more you get along factors in as well,” Narcissa schooled softly. “You managed with the wand. I'm sure that figured in. Build on what you did with that. It can only help both of you. And remember to cooperate.” She didn't want to work too much with the two or press them as she figured whatever the issue was would be something they had to work out on their own. If she interfered too much, she might end up in the same position as Lucius. That she didn't want. No, it was best to let them go on their own and give the hints they found.“We'll do what we can,” Draco told her, looking sour. He hated this, no doubt, but something had to give. That's all there was to it.
“We think we have the spell down,” Severus told Narcissa, pleased. “We've got it applied and, from our experimentation, we know it works. It won't allow any of us to poke or do something to rile. As we can't get it out of our mouths, it's not allowing us to set off total war. Which is good. It's also not an opened ended spell. It will work for a week, no more. We thought that if we keep applying it, the habit will become ingrained until everything settles. After that, there will be no need.”
“Good,” Narcissa said, pleased. “Send it off to Lucius and Remus. They'll get it passed around. I don't see a problem with those two having it applied. The same with Harry, Sirius and Bill. Charlie and Draco—I don't know.”“We'll do that,” Fred nodded.“As soon as we're done here,” George added.Pulling out the brief notes she had taken on what she learned from the other three, she quickly gave a rundown of what she learned without details that would give up just what was said. When she finished, she looked between the three and said, “I believe this is the key, for all of you. While the bonds are all a different kind, something easily figured out from the marks, I think this is what needs to come into play for all of you to get the kind of tether Harry, Sirius and Bill have. I've not gone into details of what they said, of course, but it fits. Which gives everyone a goal, I think. At least it can help, even if it isn't completely right.” Glancing between the three, she asked, gently, “Is it the same for all of you when it comes to the thoughts, acceptance and dealing with the situation?”Pondering that, Severus nodded slowly, playing out some of his thought processes on what was going on. “I think it is,” he admitted when he thought over what was going through his head the other night before falling asleep.“Same here,” Fred added after a look at his nodding brother.“As you have a slightly longer tether, can I get with each of you to get a walkthrough of what you have been thinking about it or areas that relate?” She asked, glancing around. Quickly, she added, “It goes no further, I assure you, other than something like I've said to start this area. Personal details will be kept to myself.”“I take no issue with it,” Severus told her, folding his arms over his chest. He knew Narcissa well enough that he took her at her word when it came to such matters.“We don't either,” George told her.“Good,” Narcissa said with a smile, pleased. “I'll do that before I go then pass along what I find.”“What about Lucius and Remus?” Fred asked.“You can't get close to them,” George added.“Harry, Bill and Sirius will get with them. They've been working together closely enough that it shouldn't be an issue. We'll see what happens. Though I do believe this is the clue we've been looking for to give the biggest help to date.”“Other parts factor in, though, don't they? Ones I'm not aware of?” Severus asked, eyebrow going up. He knew that there were still parts being hidden from him and wanted to know what they were for not only his own information, but to help figure this out.“Well, yes,” Narcissa admitted, shuffling her papers around. “If you have the spell applied and working properly, it should be safe to discuss those parts now as tormenting or imparting it to someone that the involved parties don't want to know isn't something that can happen. I'll leave that up to your discretion.”That Severus liked and planned to work on the twins to get the information once Narcissa left.Pressing on, she asked, “Any hint of anything on the bonds?” That's what the three were taking on when it comes to researching. “I'm still working on the markings, of course. The only one I seem to be getting anywhere with are Harry, Bill and Sirius'. Even then, it's just clues, not anything that will tell us much.”“So far, no,” Severus admitted with a dour shake of his head. “Clues are all we have as each is manifesting different behaviors.”“I thought as much,” she sighed. “Keep going and see what you can find. I'll have Lucius and Remus pass everything they can to you.” Changing topics, she said, “I think you need to send off a missive to Sirius about either taking another room or moving to one better suited. He doesn't care, obviously. It can also probably help matters.”“We'll do that as well,” Fred told her with a nod.“Quickly,” George added.“There's a suite one floor below us that would be better suited,” Severus admitted, liking that idea. Thinking it over, he added, tone thoughtful, “If Black doesn't mind, could your elves set to making one floor for each of us? That would give all of us not only plenty of room, but make it to where we feel more 'at home'. I have plenty of items I want to move here, there just isn't the space for it. Even if we do take on another room.”“I can easily do that,” Narcissa smiled, making a note of it. “I'll get with Sirius after I leave here. That may be the way to go. Once I get his approval, I send the elves off to get what they need and press on. It'll take a day or so, obviously, but they can manage.”
“Cissy already has the elves off getting what's needed and they'll start today,” Sirius said, looking between Remus and Lucius. “It's a damned good idea and one we never thought of. I'm also having her put them to work in the library cleaning out a section for the books on this nightmare. And she's setting up the standard sign out sheet for them. That way we can just go start looking rather than running in circles trying to find something.”
“Oh, this is good, Sirius,” Remus told him with a pleased nod and smile. “Definitely the way to go.”“Thank Cissy for it. It was her idea,” Sirius grinned. Sobering up, he sighed then said, “For the foreseeable future, we're all stuck here. So, we might as well be as comfortable as we can get. We'll take the top floor. Cissy can have the one below us. Then you lot. Below that is Snape, Fred and George. Finally, Charlie and Draco. They'll set it up as close as they can get to apartments to give us all the privacy we need. As Bill's things arrived this morning, we were wondering what to do with them because we needed more room.”“Remus can send a note off to Narcissa about having the elves get photos of furniture we have stored at the Manor. Everyone can pick out what they want as it's just gathering dust there. We may as well get as comfortable as possible,” Lucius said, pleased, as this would allow him to bring over some comfort items that would make things far more bearable for him. “The elves can easily handle decorating, floor and wall treatments, whatever.”“We might as well make this livable,” Sirius shrugged. Changing topics, he said, “We think we've hit on something. Well, Cissy did. What's going on with us seems to confirm it.” Quickly, he gave a rundown of what they discussed and how it related. “We've confirmed it with some of what's going on with our end. She's getting with Snape and the twins over it. I said we'd take it up with you two.”“We won't say a word, you know that,” Bill interjected quietly, though was sure the two knew that.Thinking it over, glancing at Lucius, who was looking at him, Remus gave a slow nod. “I think that's the case with us as well, honestly. At least to an extent. I can only speak for my thought processes, but it leans there.”“The same with mine,” Lucius admitted with a nod. “I just don't think we've reached the level of acceptance you have on it.”“No, I don't think so,” Remus chuckled, shaking his head. Pondering that, he added, tone distracted, “While it's a step in knowing what we need, I'm wondering how much more there is. There is still a tether with the three of you. Which means there has to be more involved to either lengthen it or do away with it. That I'm not sure—well, I don't know what it might mean.”“We'll keep working on it,” Bill told him. “Let's see where it goes from here.”“I think we need to follow your lead in this, though it's not as easy as it sounds,” Lucius told them, pondering it harder. “We can't recreate what's there, we know that, as its taken years to cultivate the relationships, but there are bits we can use. And I think we need to. Let's see what Remus and I can accomplish. We're doing better than some of the others, so we might be able to push it along.”“We'll do what we can,” Remus nodded, fully planning to see what he could manage though, internally, he knew he hadn't come to the level of acceptance the other three had. There was part of him still warring about that and what this truly meant, holding out hope for a fix. Shaking his head, he pressed on, “We have the spell for the one area. It seems to work well. Lucius and I applied it when we got it and the bond isn't throwing fits. You lot can do the same. That will help.”“Charlie and Draco haven't?” Harry asked, looking around.“No, not yet,” Lucius sighed, shaking his head. “Let them work on the issues that have cropped up before we delve into this one. They're working on it and Narcissa is trying to help. We'll find something. If we can all get to the place this spell works, we may have something there that can work so we can get together on the looming areas.”“That we need, fast,” Bill sighed with a shake of his head.“We know,” Remus told him, shoulders slumping. “Let's see what we can work out then go from there.” Pressing on, he began to cover other bits that had come in so the three could fill Narcissa in. It was his hope that the bond would settle enough soon that she could come around them. That would make things far easier to deal with.
Pacing back and forth in the room, Severus took in all the twins just told him. As the spell was applied and working, they agreed to give up what was really going on. Though parts were good and gave him information he needed to look into the bonds, the rest was nightmare inducing.
Stopping, he asked, tone distracted as he looked at the floor, “How sure are you that the explosion is coming?” He wanted to be certain on that as it affected so much. Not to mention what it might cause.“As sure as hippogriffs love ferrets,” Fred sighed.“And it won't be nice,” George added, head hanging down.“Bill and Charlie are two that were fairly mild mannered,” Severus observed going over what he knew of them in school. “They weren't apt to be set off by much.”“You don't understand how long this has gone on,” George told him.“Or how much they've had to take over the years.” Fred continued.“We're all done,” they said together, shaking their heads.“Look, mum won't be nice about this, we already know that. She'll go off just to sound good, of course,” Fred started.“The rest? Yeah, she's going to blow,” George finished.“What do you mean?” Molly, from what Severus knew of her, loved her kids. All of them.Sighing and looking at his brother, Fred finally said, “Look, mum—she has the kids that matter to her at home, except Percy. They always get what they want.”“In this case, they won't. Especially Ginny. She's the one that mum makes sure gets everything she wants. And what she wants is Harry. More than anything in the world. That's not happening,” George explained.“The bond alone would cause a blowup. What's even worse is Harry would never have been Ginny's,” Fred added.“They didn't know of the relationship?” Severus asked, curious. That was one Bill and Potter had hidden well. There was no inkling from Potter what was going on. And Bill? Like the rest, he thought there was something with Fleur. This—he hadn’t had a clue. And was also getting why it was kept quiet, from everyone.“Harry thinks Dad does,” George admitted.“Things Dad said to him, and he passed along, lean all of us to think Dad knew and approved,” Fred added.“It was just never said plainly,” George told him.“And we know Dad wouldn't have said anything to mum, as that would have cause a huge blowup,” Fred sighed.Shaking his head at that, Severus sighed. They were correct there, that's for sure. Arthur could stand up to plenty, he just wouldn't defy his wife was all. Folding his arms over his chest, he looked at the floor, pondering this. “I would have assumed Bill and Charlie would let it go. They've not blown up on many people from what I saw of them in school.”“You need to understand that we're all at the end of what we can take,” Fred told him. “All of us. Bill and Charlie left the country for a reason.”“And Bill—he's as protective of Harry as Sirius is. Charlie likes Harry as well. The two of them, plus us, have done all we can to protect Harry over the years and help him with his family,” George sighed.“Ginny, Ron and Hermione are going to start on Harry. We all know that. Ginny—it's going to be a tantrum the likes of which you've never seen. Harry was 'hers'. She has sworn that since she was younger,” Fred continued.“Ron and Hermione are bigots. That's the only way to put it. Hermione might fight for the rights of like house elves, but when it comes to homosexuality, she goes by religious teachings. I don't think she can see beyond that because of the way her parents are,” George added.“Harry and Bill hid this the best they could. They were just biding their time until they could get out. Then this happened,” Fred explained.“And—look, we're all done, alright? You can only take so much. We're there. Dad—you know what he's like with mum,” George pressed on.“One remark is all it's going to take to ignite it all. Then everything is going to come out,” Fred told him.“From all of us,” the two then said together.Looking at them, Severus tried to process that. Shaking his head, he groaned. “A nightmare in the offing.” That was all he could think of to describe it.“Oh yes,” Fred chuckled mirthlessly.“A big one,” George sighed.“Bill and Harry's relationship has to factor in with what's going on,” Severus pressed on. “If it was that close, it would carry over.”“That was our thinking,” George nodded.“The same with Harry's connection with Sirius,” Fred added.“Which gives us a hint on what might be there,” Severus told them firmly. It was at least a start. That they needed. The other part—he wanted to think that over and get with the rest before he tried to formulate what to do. If nothing else, he needed to prepare for hell. Because he was sure the gates to it were about to open.
