“I need a bloody nap,” Draco huffed, shifting the pile of books in his bag to the opposite shoulder.
“That makes two of us,” Hermione said, shifting her bag as well.
They stalked through the streets of London searching for cigarettes and lighter fluid. Draco was about to gnaw his fingernails off with his cravings. Snape had warned them to stay sober so alcohol was out but a little nicotine would go a long way. It was just too hard to function without something running through their veins.
“There,” Draco said, pointing to a petrol station.
“You have muggle money?”
“Always.”
Ten minutes later, they had three packs of smokes and a full zippo at their disposable. Draco lit the first one the second they stepped out of the store, inhaling with relish and coughing on the exhale.
“Shit,” he said. “That blood took more than just the drug away.”
Hermione shrugged and took the fag from him, taking a smaller drag. She still coughed but not as bad as Draco who had doubled over for a few minutes. The rush of nicotine and Merlin knew what else was enough to make her dizzy. It was perfect.
Draco laughed and took the cigarette, taking a much smaller drag. “It’s like the first time.”
“Works for me,” Hermione said, stumbling into the nearest alley. “We should get back soon.”
“Can we at least finish this? I need something in my system to face the madness.”
She couldn’t argue with that logic. They shared the cigarette, relishing it to the very last drag. Then they hitched up their bags and spun on the spot, aiming for Hogsmeade. They touched down in the street by the shrieking shack, someplace no one would spot them easily.
“Come on,” Hermione said, opening the crooked little gate to the house.
“Are you insane?” Draco hissed.
She sneered at him. “Certainly you don’t still believe that this place is haunted.”
“No,” Draco said, paling a bit. “But that’s where Snape died.”
Hermione paused and took a deep breath to steady herself. “Not really. Besides, this is the quickest way to Hogwarts. We’ll come out under the whomping willow.”
“And how, pray tell, are we to escape the branches of that psychopathic tree?”
“I’ll show you if you’ll quit being such a damn baby.”
Draco scowled and followed her. He hated being reminded of his tendency toward cowardice. Hermione plowed through the rooms, studiously ignoring the bed that she and Harry had blasted Snape through. It was the pool of dried blood that made her freeze, remembering Snape’s last few breaths after Nagini ripped his throat out. He’d given Harry the necessary memories to allow him to succeed. Even Snape was appalled at the idea that Harry would be a sacrificial lamb. And the truth, the truth that he’d loved Harry’s mother so fiercely that he’d protect her son, the son of her enemy. No wonder he’d wanted death. Anything to escape the guilt and the memories.
Draco crashed into her back and they both stumbled to keep their footing. “What the fuck?”
“This was where he died,” she said quietly. “Where that fucking snake ripped his throat open.”
Draco looked at the floor, swallowing hard. “That’s a lot of blood.”
“So much,” she whispered.
“No doubt the most far gone child I’ve ever turned.”
They both spun and went into a crouch, drawing their wands. On the other side of the room, hidden deep in the shadow, was a pair of bright blue eyes and a set of gleaming white fangs.
“W-who are you?” Hermione called, her wand on point.
“I am Ferdinand.”
“Why are you here?” Draco asked, his voice weak. “What do you want?”
“I’ve made this my home, a place where no one dares to dwell… except you two. Why is that?”
“What do you want?” Hermione asked, repeating Draco and ignoring the vampire’s question.
“To live in peace and hunt when I wish,” Ferdinand said, stepping into the lighter shadows. He was careful to keep out of the few rays of light that cut through the darkness. “I was here when that snake-like creature ordered his beast to strike my child down. Such sorrow from his three young enemies when he fell.”
Hermione gasped and shook her head.
“Oh yes,” Ferdinand said, stepping again, getting uncomfortably close. “I recognize you young one. And even if I didn’t, your smell speaks for itself. Such sorrow and guilt.”
“If you can smell that, then you can smell that we’re off limits,” Draco growled.
“Indeed,” Ferdinand said, stepping just inches from their wands.
Only a beam of light separated them. Ferdinand was striking, with light hair that reached to his elbows. His angular jaw and long straight nose made him look aristocratic. He was dressed in a tunic similar to that of Snape’s buttoned to the throat. Strangely enough, he didn’t feel threatening but they weren’t taking any chances.
“How is my child?” Ferdinand asked.
“Fine no thanks to you,” Hermione spat. “Why didn’t you just let him die?”
Ferdinand raised a brow. “You’d wish your Master dead?”
“No,” Hermione said softly, still rigid in posture. “But he wanted to die and you gave him no choice.”
“Like you then,” Ferdinand said softly, nodding when her face contorted in pain. “And like your Master has seen in you two, I saw his potential. Regardless of what it looked like, I have watched my child and his struggles over the years. I had thought to turn him decades ago when his first love died. And I watched as he struggled through his depression and his anger and became something… truly beautiful. He became hard as stone, sharp as blades, and stronger than the hardest metal. He became the perfect child. All he needed were companions. And now I see that he has found them.”
Hermione shifted uncomfortably, feeling Draco do the same. They too noticed how beautiful Snape was, seeing past his hard exterior to the man inside. His exterior was beautiful too, in a sort of broken way, though the scars of the past had faded. There wasn’t even evidence of Nagini’s bite, though there were a few whip marks that marred his back.
“He chose you specifically,” Ferdinand continued, studying them the way a muggle scientist would. “I sat with him many nights as he coveted you from afar, noting how beautiful you both had become, how strong, tempered by fire and sinking from grief. We listened as you found each other, kept each other going despite having nothing in common. You found each other as anchors and he knew it was time.”
“He knows you?” Hermione whispered.
“He’s been watching us,” Draco said quietly.
Ferdinand nodded. “Yes to both young ones. Your Master had spent many nights railing against me, seeking death and vengeance. Yet he executed neither.”
“Why show yourself now?” Draco growled, straightening up a bit.
Ferdinand grinned, his fangs gleaming in the dark. “I wished to see how the claiming went. I can smell that it went rather well. And now that I know my child is secure in his future, I can move on to others.”
“Others?” Hermione whispered.
Ferdinand nodded. “Vampires crave companionship as I’m sure your Master has told you. I am no different. In searching for companions, I find individuals that deserve more. Severus is just one in a long line of many, though he is very special. Treat him well young ones and he’ll return the favor.”
“Y-yes sir,” Hermione muttered, frowning as she grabbed Draco’s hand and dragged him through the shack.
“You won’t be seeing him again will you?” Draco asked quietly.
Ferdinand gave a sad smile. “He has found his permanent consorts for this lifetime. I’m afraid that I am merely a passing fancy. Good luck young ones… and should you desire for forever, simply whisper my name on the wind.”
The vampire shifted into a bat, flapping up into the rafters and disappearing into the darkness above. They stared at the place he was standing for a moment before shaking themselves out and crawling up the tunnel Hermione pointed out.
“Gah, it’s disgusting in here,” Draco complained.
Hermione laughed and shook her head. “We just met Snape’s sire and all you can think about is the cobwebs in an old tunnel.”
“Better than thinking about Snape’s sire,” Draco muttered.
“What do you think that was all about anyway?”
“I figure he just wanted to make sure Snape was good before he left.”
“Strange,” she said, pushing on a few roots to clear the way. “Here we are. This is the base of the whomping willow. There should be… ah, here it is.”
“What?”
“This knot,” she said, pointing to the knot on the tree that would depress to immobilize it. “Just push it like this.”
His jaw dropped open when the tree snapped up and froze in place. “No bloody way.”
She giggled a moment and crawled out, dragging her bag behind her. “Remus used to use this place to turn on the full moon. That’s why people thought it was haunted. He and Harry’s father and Sirius and… Wormtail used to keep him company.”
“Wormtail?” he asked, climbing out with his bag and dusting himself off. “You’ve got to be joking.”
“No,” she said sadly. “He was part of the group. But he betrayed Harry’s parents. Slimy little rat. Anyway, this was an escape route for Remus to get away from everyone so he could transform. Convenient, isn’t it?”
“Quite,” he said, waving his wand over himself and then her to clean away the filth. “Now we just have to figure out a way to get back to the castle without being spotted. Maybe they’ll just think we’ve been holed up somewhere.”
“Not bloody likely,” she said darkly. “Harry and that blasted map of his will have confirmed that we weren’t there.”
“Didn’t you say that the Room of Requirement didn’t show up on that thing?”
“Yeah, but it also wouldn’t open if we were in it. And I’m sure he’s already tried gaining access.”
“We’ll just have to hope he didn’t,” he said, slinging his bag on one shoulder and hers on the other before creeping over to the edge of the forest by Hagrid’s hut.
“What do we tell them if he has?” she whispered, keeping pace with him and her wand out just in case.
“Which would get us into the least amount of trouble, a stroll in the woods or a trip to London?”
“Woods it is then,” she said. “Wait, I have an idea.”
He stopped and allowed her to tap his head with her wand. She watched in satisfaction as he melted out of sight. Then she cast the same spell on herself before grabbing for his hand so they wouldn’t get separated.
“This way, we might get a little further. If we can make it to the library, they can’t prove anything.”
“Clever,” he whispered, following her as she kept to the shadows as much as possible.
At Hagrid’s hut, they skirted the vegetable patch and made a break for the courtyard. There was no one out and about so they ran straight through not bothering to slow down to minimize air ripples. They wondered for a moment if Snape had spiked their drinks with Felix Felicis because they were lucky enough to find the castle door open and most of the hallways clear. They didn’t stop moving until they’d reached the library.
“Finally,” Draco huffed as Hermione took the spell off. “I feel like we’ve been running forever.”
Hermione chuckled. “It isn’t a nap but at least we’re at Hogwarts now.”
He threw his bag on a nearby table. “Might as well get started on the research then. I know you won’t let me into your knickers without a roll of parchment on what I learned.”
She rolled her eyes and threw her bag next to his. “I can’t believe you’re still thinking about getting into my knickers.”
Draco gave her a cheeky grin. “Baby, I always think about getting into your knickers.”
“Quit calling me baby you nympho.”
“What do you want me to call you?”
“Anything but that.”
Draco laughed and started taking out several of the book that he’d grabbed from Snape’s personal library. Hermione joined him, stacking up an equally tall pile. She was thankful that Snape had leant them the bags. They had so much to get through before they could collect the scales and hardly any time to do it in.
Draco whistled through his teeth. “Merlin that’s a lot of material.”
“We’ll have to break it up into priorities,” Hermione said, conjuring a piece of parchment and a quill absentmindedly. “We already know that we can’t harm the dragon so spells to kill it are out and we don’t have to focus so hard on the potions since we know the method in which the scales need to be harvested.”
“That leaves subduing the beasts and harvesting techniques,” Draco muttered, conjuring his own parchment and quill. “Which do you want to take?”
“I’ll take the harvesting,” she said. “Subduing spells are probably darker than I’m used to. You’ll understand them better.”
Draco smirked. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”
“You won’t get another one,” she warned, already furiously scribbling on her parchment.
He shook his head and cracked open the first book, leafing through the pages until he found a section on taming dragons through spells. They wrote furiously, scratching through notes, writing on top of others, and rifling through pages at light speed. They were so focused on their tasks that when Harry Potter came marching into the library with the Headmistress hot on his heels, they didn’t notice.
“Where the hell have you two been?” Harry shouted.
Hermione squeaked and knocked over her ink, spilling it onto Snape’s precious books. She frantically siphoned up the offending mess and glared daggers at Harry. Draco hadn’t had quite as an extreme reaction but he was cursing Potter as he erased the large ink blot on his page.
“What did you do that for?” Hermione screeched.
“You’ve been missing for a day and a half and you want to know why I came to find you?” Harry asked.
Hermione scowled at him and systematically marked all the pages in the books before slamming them shut and cramming them back in her bag. She didn’t want McGonagall to catch on to what they were about to do. She used the time to gather her wits. Draco was doing the same, taking his cues from her for once.
“We’ve been here,” she hissed.
“No you weren’t,” Harry growled, pointing to his map.
“Perhaps we weren’t on that blasted parchment,” Hermione growled.
“The map never lies,” Harry snapped.
“Then maybe it omits things,” Hermione barked.
“Nevertheless,” McGonagall cut in. “The locating spells we cast did not find you until just now.”
“That’s ridiculous,” Draco spoke up. “We’ve been here for hours.”
“We shall see,” McGonagall said curtly. “Please gather your things and follow me.”
AN: Dun dun dunnnn. Busted!! Sorry for the wait guys. I got strep and a second temp job at the same time. Wreaks havock with my writing. The reason I don't post chapters as soon as I write them anymore is because I learned how sloppy they are when I first get finished with them. So I read, edit, reread, rewrite, and then read again so I minimize mistakes. I still don't catch them all, but at least I can notice a tiny difference in my writing. ;) As always, thanks to everyone who reviewed. Lying in bed miserable because you can't breathe and your throat hurts seems a little less bleak with them. Keep them coming and let me know how I'm doing. Until next time... love you guys.
