Chapter 9
Feeling his head drop once more, Sirius jerked it up then shook it, trying to focus on the book on the table in front of him. With a heavy sigh, he wasn't sure he could manage though. As this had been going on for the last half hour, he knew he had to do something else. Summoning an elf and having the creature bring him some coffee, he stretched, groaning as he did. Of course, he was still going through the ever growing stack of books on this nightmare. Not that it was doing him much good, mind you, but he was trying. All he kept getting was small pieces that, though they helped, weren't much in the way of true information they desperately needed. It was his hope that they could accumulate all they could then piece it together.
Sighing, he looked out the window. The good weather that had been around was gone. It was one of those grey, gloomy days that happened in the fall. So far, it had rained most of it. Not the heavy kind, but the steady soft kind of rain that made you tired. He supposed that was part of his problem. There was always something about that kind of rain that made him sleepy.Shaking his head again and picking up the coffee the elf delivered, he sipped it, hoping the caffeine helped. He really wanted to get through as many of these books as he could. It was just—he wasn't sure he could manage that. Sighing, he leaned back, stretching out his legs. Arms folded over his chest, he glanced back over his shoulder at the bed. As expected, Harry was still curled up on the bed, sleeping soundly. Though the weather was enough to make most sleepy, he didn't think that was the main reason Harry was out cold once more. Whatever started the day before was probably the real reason his godson had woken up long enough to shower, eat and take care of the normal bits before crawling back into bed. Since breakfast, he had been out cold. As would be expected, he had tried getting out of him what the problem was since he was concerned, but got nowhere other than Harry telling him he was tired. That had him worried.Gazing at the sleeping Harry, he sighed, shaking his head. At lunch he would try again, hoping to keep his godson awake long enough to figure out what in Merlin's name was going on. Oh, he could take a good guess at what part of it was; this whole nightmare. That would factor in, of course. There had to be more than that, though. If he could get Harry talking, he could at least get clues then go from there.Rubbing both hands over his face, he groaned. He hated this shite. He well and truly did. It was a nightmare the likes of which he couldn't have even dreamed of. Worse than Azkaban, as strange as that would sound to most. And he didn't know what to do about it to help. There was nothing that he could see that would get them out of this mess. Which meant he not only had to protect Harry, but deal with being tied to Voldemort for the rest of their damned lives. And the latter was what was almost causing panic, even in him. He knew that there was no chance at getting the evil git to change anything. Voldemort would always be Voldemort whether he used that name or they called him Tom, that's all there was to it. That meant he and Harry had to deal with him without getting sucked into that side. He also doubted that there was anything they could do to help the other side as everything he was reading mentioned not being able to hurt each other. In betraying him, he was sure that would be classified as 'hurting'. Which meant they were fucking stuck in something he didn't know how to deal with. That told him he had to prioritize. And his priority was Harry and keeping him safe.Groaning loudly, he stared at the books piled all over and shook his head. Scrubbing both hands over his face, he tried to focus. He just couldn't manage that. It came down to the fact that he was too tired. All he wanted to do was curl up with Harry and sleep. Head dropping back after he removed his hands, he sighed, eyes sliding shut. Maybe sleeping wasn't a bad option. It might clear his head. At the moment, he couldn't think straight which meant he would probably miss plenty if he pressed on.Deciding that's what he needed to do, he downed the rest of his coffee then rose, making sure to mark the place in the book he had been looking at. Stretching once more, he kicked off his shoes then pulled his shirt off as he walked towards the bed. Tossing it on the foot of the bed, he crawled under the sheets and spooned up against Harry's back. Slipping an arm around his godson, he pressed tightly to him, head resting against Harry's, then shut his eyes. He doubted the nap would last long, but sleep might clear his head so he could focus and stay alert. With the situation they were in, he desperately needed to do that.Focusing on Harry's deep breathing, he was soon drifting away himself.
Poking her head in the newly created door to Harry and Sirius' room, the one that led directly into the hallway, Nagini didn't see either of the two men. Nudging the door open further, she slithered in and looked around. She still didn't see either of them. Hoping not to startle them, she began to look around. After all, she liked to talk to Harry, so she didn't want to upset him or Sirius.
Quickly determining that the two were on the bed, sleeping, she let out a hissy sigh. She would have to wait for Harry to wake up to talk to him again. Though it had only been a few days since she started talking with him, she missed that she hadn't been able to in the last day. Tom was always so busy that they didn't get much of a chance to do that, other than some. So, Harry was great for it. He didn't seem to mind either, explaining all kinds of bits and just talking to her.Being careful not to disturb the two, she slithered up on the bed just to check everything out. Curling up there, she heard Sirius mumble in his sleep, but neither seemed disturbed by her presence. Tongue flicking, she tasted the air around the two. It was then that she was more disturbed. It was the scent of Harry that bothered her the most. It tasted different to her, something like that of a sick prey she usually honed in on. It wasn't a physical sickness, though. More like something he was feeling. From what she could pick up, it wasn't life threatening, but it was there, seeming to swirl around him. Though there had been a touch of it there since he came to live here, this was far worse. She was also sure that it hadn't been there the last time she had seen him.Unsure what to do, she sat there, curled up. Part of her wanted to wake Harry and talk to him, trying to figure out what the problem was. The other part of her wanted to go talk to Tom and tell him what she was sensing. He wanted to know these kinds of things, after all. It was just she didn't know how to explain to him what she was sensing. It was something she hadn't encountered before, so she didn't know what it was.Giving another hissy sigh, she looked at the two then slithered off the bed and headed out the door. She decided she needed to think about this before she talked to Tom. Planning to go to the small room Tom made up for her, the one that was warmer than the rest of the house with plants, a small pool and heated rock in it, she decided she would rest there for a while before she made a decision. What she hoped was that Harry would be awake so she could talk to him first before she went to Tom. That she would check on. Because she was worried about what she sensed.
Peeling his face off the desk after landing there once he started to sleep, Tom groaned. Why he was so tired was beyond him. All he knew was he felt exhausted and drained, like he had been busy all day. That wasn't the case, though. He actually hadn't done much. He had gone into a nearby town and picked up clothes for Harry and Sirius. That hadn't taken long as they were just the basic Muggle type that most favored anymore, the jeans and shirts bit. Then he had owl ordered some nicer robes and such, something that took nothing. There was a short meeting with a couple people that were highly connected within the Ministry. He had assignments for them, such as getting that damned fool Fudge to keep his fingers out of the mess with Draco. The other was about getting information. None of that took anything out of him at all. In fact, he would normally consider that easy work compared to other bits he always had to attend to. Which meant that something was off. And he had to figure out what it was.
Sighing, he rubbed a hand over his face, feeling completely worn out. The only thing that came to mind was the bond. It might be pulling in some way that was tiring them. Maybe it was the part about solidifying and pushing for other things. He didn't know. Whatever it was it had to stop, fast. He had too much to do and the amount of plans that were riding on him staying on top of them was too great for him to have episodes like this. In fact, there was plenty of information coming in all the time that he had to handle. Not to mention areas to deal with outside of figuring out what to do about this damned bond! Even figuring out what was coming with the bond was right up towards the top of the list of what he had to manage and look into. He couldn't do that if he kept landing face first on the damned desk because he was so tired.Drumming his fingers on the arm of the chair, he stared at the mass of papers littering the top of his desk, wondering where to start. It was just—he was tired. Very tired. The mere thought of delving into this mess felt so overwhelming that he wasn't sure he could force himself to do anything. That he couldn't allow. No, he had to take it on.Deciding some Pepper-Up was in order, he stood with a groan. Of course, he could get one of the elves to fetch it for him, but he thought the walk would do him good. Besides, he could check on Black and Harry that way. Though they couldn't get beyond the wards, with those two it was mandatory to keep an eye on what they might be plotting or doing. Especially Black. The man wouldn't remain rational long and he knew it. Which meant he would try something. No, he couldn't allow that to happen.Shaking his head, he went to get the potion first then he would check on the two. As Black was working on the bond himself, he could get whatever information he had come up with so far. That and deliver the clothes. A goodwill gesture might help slightly. Not much, but some.
Stepping into Harry and Sirius' room after lunch, Tom's brow furrowed. Like before lunch, when he checked on them previously, Harry was in bed asleep. Black was up and seated at the table, looking as tired as he felt. In fact, he looked so bedraggled that there were dark circles under his eyes, the kind of thing you saw in someone that didn't get enough sleep. When he had checked on the two before, Black, too, had been sleeping soundly. From what he knew from the elves, the two had slept through the night. Coupling that in with what he was feeling, completely exhausted, and he was wondering what was going on. As it was all three of them, he was sure it was related in some way. Which meant he had to figure out the cause of it.
Glancing over his shoulder when he heard the door open, Sirius sighed when he saw the evil arse standing there. Of course, he expected that since the man was the only other person in the house, he just wanted to confirm it was him and not Nagini. “We might have a problem,” he snorted, tossing another book aside and downing another large swallow of coffee. “And I think it's big, though I don't know how in the hell it relates.”“What problem is that?” Tom asked, stepping up to the table, once more glancing at Harry on the bed.“Before I get into it, let me ask this—are you tired? And I mean falling asleep at random times tired?” Sirius asked, wondering if that wasn't the case as the maniac appeared to have that look about him that spoke of the same thing he was feeling.“Yes. Why?” Tom asked, conjuring a chair then taking a seat. He wasn't about to give up any more information than that until he knew where Black was going with this. However, he was curious about where it was leading.Groaning, Sirius downed the last of his coffee then filled mug up again. “So am I. And I mean falling asleep and almost landing face first on the desk tired though I've been sleeping.” Gesturing to the sleeping Harry, he said, “He's done that since yesterday. I can get him awake for meals and such, but he spends most of them dozing off and poking at his food. Once he's done, he goes back to bed. Hell, he almost drowned in the shower because he fell asleep. Which got me wondering, as I'm feeling the same way.” Stopping, he looked at the arse, then said, “I'm curious if it's the bond in some way pulling at us. That or signaling something from Harry. The best I can pinpoint is it started with him yesterday.” Groaning, he rubbed a hand over his face then added, “And as tired as I am, I'm not getting much of anywhere looking up anything. I keep falling asleep.”Once more looking at the sleeping Harry, Tom turned all that over in his mind, wondering if it wasn't true. “When did he start sleeping all the time?”“Yesterday afternoon. I was giving up researching for a while and planned to find something else to do to keep us busy. He said he just wanted to sleep. I got him awake for supper last night, but that was just like it is today with him falling asleep. Then he just went back to bed,” Sirius told him. What he didn't add was the bit about being worried about him. Now that was more pronounced. He got that teenagers liked to sleep, a lot, but this was beyond that.“Did you ask what's going on with him or check to see if its health related?” Tom asked, now wondering if Black wasn't right about this. If he was, that meant they had to figure out the why behind it as it was heavily affecting him as well. That he couldn't have as there was too much for him to do to end up in this state.“I tried,” Sirius sighed, leaning back in his chair after a good stretch. “I couldn't get much out of him because he's so tired. What I got was the 'it's nothing' variety of answer.” Snorting, he added, crossing his arms over his chest, “It's not doing much good questioning him anyway, as I spent most of the time trying to make sure he didn't land face first on the table because he kept falling asleep.”Nodding slowly, once more glancing at the sleeping Harry, mind all over, he was sure that Black might have it at least partially right. “Are you finding anything that backs up that particular theory?”“Of course not,” Sirius sneered, shaking his head. “I'm finding fuck all about anything that would actually be really helpful. All I keep coming across is tiny bits about the bond, nothing more. And nothing is in this area. Most are pieces we already know or someone with the IQ of a flobberworm could figure out.” Glancing over at the sleeping Harry, brow furrowed, he added, “I'm a bit worried about him as I can't figure out just what's going on. Not sure if it's health related, the bond, whatever. As he's the youngest, whatever the fuck is going on is affecting him the worst. I can at least rouse myself and function, though I need a shite-load of coffee to do it. Nothing I give him is managing that. Even Pepper-Up. It might as well have been water for all the good it did.”Though Black had no evidence to back up his theory, it sounded like he was on the right track when it came to parts of it. Which meant they had to figure it out. If Pepper-Up did no good, something that had worked for him, it meant they needed to find out the why behind it. “I have some more books. Let me go get them. Between the two of us, we might be able to find something if that's what we're specifically looking for. We'll hone in on that, ignoring the rest for now.” This was going to end up risky as he didn't know what was in the books that had been delivered since lunch. As there was that one tidbit that he sure didn't want Sirius to find out, he was loath to let the man delve into anything before he checked what was in them. Though this was something he couldn't allow to continue either. Standing, he swept out to go gather them, planning to check them over briefly before bringing them back in. However, this was a case of there was enough there that he couldn't do this alone if they wanted to find something quickly.Watching the evil arse go, Sirius groaned, head dropping back and eyes sliding shut. Mumbling, he said, “What I wouldn't do for Albus' help with this. That or Hermione's! One of those two could probably find what we need.” With that, his mind began circling what in the hell he could manage when it came to getting a message out and one in. At the moment, he was having problems focusing on the worst problem so far that he wasn't going to manage one that delicate.
Leaning back in his chair, Tom shook his head as he stared at the books all over the small table in Sirius and Harry's room. Crossing his arms over his chest, he stretched his legs out then crossed his ankles as well. Nothing. They had found nothing to explain this so far. The only thing close, and he wasn't sure if it was on point or not, was that the emotions from the three of them could affect the others. That had nothing to do with sleeping! The 'added bonus' in this was now he and Sirius, both, were having real issues staying awake. They had both downed Pepper-Up while reading when it had gotten bad and it didn't help much. Which meant he was sending an elf out to get a more powerful version of it, because this couldn't continue.
Harry had woken once since he had been in the room and he could now easily understand what Black had talked about. It had taken Black helping Harry to the bathroom for him to navigate it because Harry was weaving so badly, it looked like he would fall over he was that tired. When they had come back, he had sent for a snack, hoping that they could get out of Harry what was going on. Once again, Black had been proven right in that you could get nothing rational out of Harry because he kept dozing off. Whatever he had come across with made so little sense that you couldn't figure out what it meant. Harry had been so out of it, he couldn't finish the snack he was given before he fell asleep in mid-chew. They had tried Pepper-Up again and it had no effect other than allowing Harry to get to the bed without pitching over and landing face first on the damned carpet. Which meant they had to do something. Harry was the key to figuring out what might be behind this. Oh, he doubted the youngest of them had the answer, but he was damned sure he had the clues that would lead them to finding it.Sighing, he said, “I have more books coming. They might have something. And I'm ordering us something more powerful than Pepper-Up. You need to get Harry to take that just once so you can get out of him what in Merlin's name is happening with him so we have some idea where else to look for an answer. I don't see this just ending anytime soon on its own.”Though Sirius didn't want to take an suggestions from the evil idiot, especially about Harry, and sure as hell didn't like the idea of getting his godson to take anything just so they could get answers, it was to the point that he was sure he had to do it. This couldn't go on and with the shape Harry was in, they needed to hear what he had to say. However, he snorted, “Getting anything out of Harry that he doesn't want to talk about won't be easy. He keeps plenty to himself about a lot.”“There is that, too,” Tom groaned as he was well acquainted with Harry's stubborn streak. “You have a better chance of managing it, though.”“Let me see what I can do,” Sirius sighed, already wondering how he was going to go about it. He did agree that Harry was probably the key here as he seemed like he was affected the worst by whatever was going on. With that, he was thinking back to the day before and trying to piece together what was going on right before Harry mentioning he just wanted to sleep. He didn't see anything off, though. They had just been doing what they had been since coming here. Which meant he had no clues.Looking down, Tom said, “Run me through once more when you first noticed the tiredness.” Black had done this already, but he wanted him to do it again so he could make sure he didn't miss something. The first time of a behavior manifesting usually held the biggest clues to what the real problems were, so he wanted every detail he could get. If it took going about doing it via the Pensieve, he would go that route as well. Just so he had all he could get when it came to information. Without that, they would get nowhere. With a heavy sigh, Sirius began giving him a rundown of what went on, making sure to include everything he could think of. As he knew why this was being asked and how it might help, he had no problem doing that. All he hoped was that it would jog something loose in both of them so they had somewhere they could look for answers.
