Hermione's week continued in a similar pattern, class, library, Room of Requirement. On most nights she would "forget" to ask the RoR for privacy and Draco would show up. They wouldn't speak to each other, just share the space and wake up in the morning entwined in each other’s limbs. She didn't know why but she needed him to sleep soundly at night.
The highlight of her week had been the short note back from Harry:
'Mione,
Of course I'll meet you on Saturday.
See you then,
Harry
The simple fact that he'd gone back to calling her 'Mione warmed her heart. She'd missed his company so much. She needed to know she still had somebody. Anybody that wasn't Malfoy.
~*~*~*~
Saturday morning found an excited but nervous Hermione pacing by the Three Broom Sticks. It was 11.59 and she was starting to get the feeling Harry wasn't going to show. She watched the seconds tick down on her watch and at exactly noon Harry came into view with a crack. "Hey, 'Mione," he said with his arms open, waiting for a hug. She gladly obliged, ecstatic that he was here. Here for her.
They found a secluded corner and order lunch and drinks. They chit chatted about the weather and other mundane things until everything was on the table and Harry cast a privacy charm around them. He gently took her hand and waited. Hermione kept her head down cast and whispered, "what did they tell you, Harry?" She needed to know their version of events. So she'd know how much she had to reveal. How vulnerable she needed to be.
She felt Harry taking her hand in both of his and looked at him, there was sorrow and confusion in his eyes. He gently started, "Ginny seems to think you cheated on Ron and are still seeing this other person. Something about you having a baby and never sleeping in the Tower. She's usually in a rage when I hear anything from her these days." He looked uncomfortable having admitted that his girlfriend spent most of her time being angry. Hermione guessed Ginny wasn't just angry at her, but also at Harry. Harry cleared his throat and continued on, "Ron said he'd hurt you when you broke up, wouldn't say how, and that you'd broken up with him because you were shagging somebody else. Claims he knows for a fact you weren't a virgin. Because you were pregnant. Then he said that out of the blue his parents decided to take your side, locked him up at the Burrow. Until a few days ago. Two guys just showed up and demanded a duel but tortured him once they disarmed him. Molly and Arthur kicked him out."
Hermione listened on in horror, there were so many gaps and misunderstandings in the story. No wonder Harry had felt the need to separate himself from her. Everything he had heard made it seem like she was the root of all the trouble and Ron was a victim in the grand scheme of things. She couldn't believe her ears.
"Harry, Ron's right, I wasn't a virgin when he and I started dating. But that's beside the point," Hermione took a few calming breaths before saying anything else, "please let me finish what I have to say. I will tell you everything I know." Slowly, every excruciating piece of the puzzle she knew was put out on the table. She had to tell Harry everything because Ron had failed to and Ginny was defending her brother, not knowing the whole truth.
By the time the she had said her last words, the food was cold and forgotten before them. Neither had any appetite. Harry sat back shell-shocked, dropping his arms besides himself, having let go of Hermione's hand. "I...I just can't believe he'd do something like that Hermione." He whispered, "Ron has been our best friend since first year and he's going to be my brother-in-law once Ginny graduates. I...don't know." Hermione nodded, slowly moving her chair away from the table. She was trying to give him time to see it her way, but nobody thought Ron was capable of doing such a thing. Somehow, she'd managed to hold back her tears throughout their conversation, but now it felt like the flood gates had opened once again.
"Harry, you don't have to believe me, but that's my truth. It's what I live with every day," she said as she gathered her belongings and walked out of the Three Broom Sticks. She kept hoping that she'd hear Harry yell her name, that he'd catch up with her and say it would be alright. But she heard nothing. Instead she was left alone in the crisp autumn air.
