Chapter 9
Hermione took a seat at her usual place in Potions. Ron pulled out the chair to take the seat next to her, but was quickly pushed aside. Startled, Hermione turned and saw Draco sitting down beside her.
"Oi!" Ron shouted, his face turning red.
"Go find a seat somewhere else, Weasley, because this one is taken," Draco replied snootily, his gaze not leaving Hermione's.
"But I always sit there!" he protested, looking to Hermione for help.
She sighed, shaking her head slightly. "Just sit somewhere else, Ron."
"But- but-" he stuttered.
"Ron," Hermione said firmly, a hint of warning in her voice. The last thing she wanted was for Ron and Draco to cause a scene.
"But it's Malfoy!"
"Yes I realize that but I can handle myself. Now go sit with Harry, or else you'll end up with a Slytherin for a partner," she said.
Ron gave Malfoy a final glare, before skulking off.
"Hermione?" Draco asked gently, scooting his chair closer to her. He was careful to whisper, not wanting anyone else to hear their conversation.
She was quiet, still ignoring him. Hermione was still angry about the way he had spoken to her this morning.
"Look, I'm sorry. This… umm," Draco flushed. "I'm not good at this."
Hermione tilted her head to the side slightly. She was surprised that he had admitted his weakness in relationships and figured she might as well meet him halfway. "Apology accepted."
"You're not mad?" he asked, the relief evident on his face. How can she not be mad at me? I completely yelled at her this morning… shooting her down before even listening to what she had to say, he thought to himself. But he realized that if she was willing to forgive him, then he would be grateful for it.
She shook her head. "Well, I am, but it's only because we really don't know each other. I don't like being told what to do, Draco, and I'm sure you'll come to learn that quickly."
"And I'm used to people listening to what I have to say… but it seems that there's a lot we need to learn about each other."
Hermione smiled at him faintly, before turning her gaze forward again. "You know, you shouldn't have baited Ron that way."
"And why is that?" Draco asked.
"Because Harry's onto you," Hermione replied tersely. "But we'll talk about that later."
Hermione knew that was a discussion they would have to have. Draco needed to be more careful about what he said and did… the last thing he needed was Harry telling everyone Draco was a Death Eater. She shivered slightly, knowing that he was a Death Eater, but she had to remind herself that he didn't want to be. He was forced into servitude and she couldn't hold that against him.
No, she would just have to support him the best she could.
"Right," Draco replied after a few minutes, wondering what Hermione meant by that. He knew Potter had been on the train with him, eavesdropping, but he really didn't say anything that important. But he'd have to be careful… the last thing he wanted was Potter becoming really nosy.
Stupid Potter, always doing the opposite of what he's told.
Professor Slughorn entered the room at that moment. "Welcome class, to sixth year Potions! My name is Professor Slughorn, and I'll be teaching you this year."
Hermione frowned. Professor Slughorn didn't hold the same commanding presence that Professor Snape did, and she was already bored.
Glancing at Draco, she watched him for a while, drowning Slughorn out. He had a look of disgust on his face, causing Hermione to smirk. It seemed her husband agreed with her on Slughorn's personality.
"You think he's always this jolly?" Hermione whispered to Draco.
He snorted, causing a few people to glance at them. Draco quickly sent them all a glare, telling them to mind their own business. Facing forward once more, he whispered, "I hope not."
Hermione smiled. She hoped not either.
"Now, can anyone tell me what this potion is?" he asked, pointing to one of the potions.
As always, Hermione knew the answer. Her hand shot up, waving in the air.
Draco rolled his eyes. Such a know-it-all, he thought but there was no malice in the thought because she was his know-it-all. One of the reasons he had chosen her after all was for her brains.
"Yes, you! What is your name dear?" Slughorn asked eagerly, smiling at her encouragingly.
"Hermione Granger, sir," she replied nervously.
Slughorn's eyes lit up. "Granger? Can you possibly be related to Hector Dagworth-Granger, who founded the Most Extraordinary Society of Potioneers?"
Hermione flushed, quickly shaking her head. "No, sir. I'm Muggleborn."
Disappointment appeared on his face, only to vanish moments later as Harry spoke. "'One of my best friends is Muggleborn and she's the best in our year!' Harry, I'm assuming this is the very friend of whom you spoke of?"
Harry nodded. "Yes, sir." He turned, sending Hermione a grin.
She smiled back at him, touched that he thought so highly of her.
"Very well, Miss Granger, the answer if you please?"
"Well, that potion is Amortentia. It's the most powerful love potion in the world. It causes a powerful infatuation or obsession in the drinker. It has a distinctive mother-of-pearl sheen and the steam rises from it in characteristic spirals. It has a different aroma for everyone who smells it, reminding each person of the things they find most attractive. For example, I smell fresh cut grass, new parchment, spearmint toothpaste, and colo…" she trailed off, her eyes widening. Abruptly, she sat down, her cheeks flushed.
Draco wondered what on earth Hermione could have smelled to make her react like that. What was she about to say? Cologne? All of a sudden, his eyes widened. Did Hermione smell his cologne? Did that mean she was attracted to him?
Hermione caught his smirk. "Shut it," she replied tersely, feeling rather embarrassed. She zoned out for the rest of Slughorn's speech.
"I think it's cute," he replied, flashing her a grin before going to gather the supplies the two of them would need to make the potion.
"You okay, Hermione?"
Turning, she saw Harry standing by the edge of her table. "Just fine!" she replied, hoping he wouldn't read into this too deeply.
"Malfoy isn't bothering you, is he?"
"No, Harry. He's being fine. Malfoy hasn't even really said anything to me."
"But it looked like you were whispering," Harry countered.
"Nope, you must be seeing things, Harry." She shrunk down in her seat, hoping he'd leave.
Draco returned moments later. "Potter, leave my partner alone," he said tersely, handing Hermione her share of ingredients.
Harry didn't move.
"It's fine, Harry. Now go start your potion or else you won't finish on time," she said, looking at him, pleading for him to really think this through.
Finally, Harry turned and stormed away.
"Potty has a temper problem, doesn't he?"
Hermione rolled her eyes. "Yes, Draco, but you already know that. Isn't that why you bait him so much?" She added the crushed mint to her potion. "And don't call him Potty!"
Draco chuckled. "Why, does that bother you?"
"Of course it does," she snapped. "Harry's my best friend. I realize that you don't like him, but I won't have you sniping about him around me, alright?" she said, glaring at him, daring him to disagree.
"Yes ma'am," he replied, before turning towards his own potion.
The two of them spent the remainder of the class in silence. They bumped shoulders every so often, each time sending chills up her spine.
Her thoughts kept drifting towards tonight. Would they consummate their relationship? Hermione knew that they had until the end of the month, but didn't know if she wanted to put it off or not. She had mixed feelings about the idea of consummating their marriage. Maybe they should spend some time getting to know each other's bodies first, before jumping straight to the main act.
Class ended and Hermione bottled up her potion. It was good, near perfect as always. Harry, however, made a perfect potion, which really surprised her.
"When did Potter get so good at potion making?" Draco asked, leaning closer to her.
"I don't know," she replied with narrow eyes, "but I intend to find out."
They handed their potions in. "I'll see you tonight?" she asked, turning to him.
Draco nodded curtly. "Have a nice day, Hermione." His voice was soft and full of caring, which surprised her. Suddenly, he stepped back. "Watch your step, Mudblood," he hissed, before turning and storming away.
Her jaw dropped, confused as to what had just happened.
"Hermione!"
Ron and Harry approached her.
"Hey guys," she said smiling. Draco must have just said that for show… they needed to keep up the appearance that they hated each other.
"I really like Slughorn," Ron said while the three of them walked towards the Greenhouses.
Hermione rolled her eyes. Of course Ron liked him… he was easy. "He was all right," she replied, shrugging her shoulders. "Harry, how did you do so well?"
He laughed nervously. "Maybe under a proper teacher I can finally spread my wings and grow?"
She looked at him sceptically. "Yeah, right, Harry. Try again."
He sighed, before reaching into his bag and producing a book. "There are notes in the margins."
"The Half-Blood Prince?" she asked, flipping through the pages. "Who is that?"
Harry shrugged. "Don't know, but he's a genius!"
"It could be a girl," she protested. "And Harry, is this really safe? What if this was dark magic? You wouldn't even know!"
"I'm not stupid!" Harry retorted. "It's just some help in class, nothing more."
"After what happened with Ginny and the diary, Harry, I would have thought you'd be a bit more wary of these sorts of things."
"I am wary!" he replied angrily. "I know it's just notes for class."
"No, you don't! It could have been telling you how to blow your potion up instead of making it better. You had no way of knowing," Hermione replied heatedly before storming ahead of them, partnering up with Neville for Herbology instead of one of them.
