Chapter 9
When the Portkey deposited Harry and their Solicitor in the Ministry of Magic, Harry's magic was already crackling around him like red static electricity, a testament to his anger. All he knew was he was leaving with Sirius, he didn't care how. The arrest was bogus, something their Solicitor would take care of in short order. If they wanted to fight, they would end up with one they wouldn't win as the law wasn't on their side. He didn't give a damn what the fools hoped to accomplish with this stunt, but it wasn't going to work. No, he wasn't helping them with shit after this incident.
Though he could hear their Solicitor telling him to calm down and to let him handle what was going on, Harry spied one of the Aurors that took Sirius then snarled at him, “Where's my husband! I want to see him, now!”The bulky older man looked amused at the demand, but beckoned them to follow. Still seething, Harry followed closely. No, Sirius wasn't staying. He didn't give a shit. Teeth grinding as they wound their way through the halls of what he assumed was the DMLE, he was then surprised to find themselves at the Minister of Magic's office. Right, that seemed off to him, but he didn't care. As long as he left with Sirius, he didn't give a shit why he was in the Minister's office. When the Auror stopped at the door and knocked, apparently waiting for a response, Harry glared daggers at him, folding his arms over his chest and waited. After hearing someone tell them to come in, Harry set his jaw and straightened up. Hands balled into fists, the static discharge that surrounded him, a manifestation of his magic, started to lick out from his body like short flames. Oh, he was pissed and people were about to find out how much!Once the door was opened, he stormed in and demanded, after seeing Sirius stand, and ignoring their Solicitor telling him to calm down, “What do you think you're trying to pull with this stunt? You have nothing to arrest him for! Let him go!”“Just calm down,” Rufus said, looking amused at the display, though wary at the visualization of the magic he was seeing. “He's not under arrest.”“Fine,” Harry ground out, arms folded over his chest. “We're leaving then.” Sirius had stood then come over by him, putting a hand on his back. Like with his Solicitor, his husband was telling him to calm down. He wasn't, though, not until they were back home. Despite what Scrimgeour said, he knew it wasn't going to end up as easy as them just leaving. So, they had to wait until they heard what he wanted from them.“Calm down, Harry,” Sirius muttered, making sure to hold onto his wand arm so he didn't end up doing anything foolish that would give them an opportunity to lay any real charges on them. “I'm not under arrest, he made that clear.”“Then we're leaving, now,” Harry snarled, still glaring at the Minister.“You're free to go,” Rufus told him. “All I want is to ask some questions before you do. It's about some of what was said in the Alley. That's all.”Before Sirius could say anything, Harry snapped, “No. We're not telling you anything. You have other ways to get the information.”Brow furrowed, Rufus stood then said, keeping a mild tone, “It's nothing intrusive, I assure you. All I want to know about is where Albus is involved and what you know of his motives.”Though Sirius sounded like he was going to answer, Harry snarled, “No. We're not telling you anything! You want to pull stunts like this, we're not going to help. All there is to it.”“It's nothing about the past,” Rufus assured him. “You have my word.”“I don't give a damn what it's about,” Harry shouted, those flames that were a manifestation of his magic licking out further from his body. “We're not helping, period!”“Mr. Potter,” Rufus started, but was cut off.“My name is Harry Black, not Potter,” Harry snapped, glaring at him. Wresting his arm away from Sirius, he shoved the sleeve of his robe up and held up his hand, showing the bondmark around his wrist. “See that? It's a bondmark. We're not only married, but bonded. You can't force us to divulge anything we talked about together. What you're asking is something we talked about. It's called privileged communication. So, piss off! We're not helping!”While he had heard the two were married, from what was said in the Alley and seeing the wedding bands, he didn't expect the bond. Bonded tended to go hand in hand with the marriage for some couples, but it also threw a large spanner in getting anything out of a bonded couple. The magic associated with a bonding would halt any attempt to get information the two didn't want to give as protection. He assumed these two knew it as well. Even if one wanted to talk about something that fell under the realm of spousal privilege, the bond would stop them if the other didn't the knowledge disclosed. Harry apparently wasn't willing to talk, which meant Sirius couldn’t either. He now had to get the one half of the bond calmed down enough so he would talk. At the very least, so he could get somewhere to look for the information he overheard in the Alley.Hands out in a placating manner, he walked around to the front of the desk, “Just calm down, Mr. Black. I assure you, I won't arrest either of you and you're free to go. All I want is some further information on what was said in the Alley, nothing more. You have my word.”“Piss off,” Harry snarled, glaring at him. “We aren't giving it. Period. There is no chance we're going to help any of you, I don't care if you belong to the Ministry.”“You're both still British,” Rufus started, inching closer, hoping to calm Harry down. All he wanted them to do was answer a few questions, nothing more. Once he had a place to look, he could go from there. “Just answering a couple things for me will help your country more than you'll ever know.”“We don't care,” Harry growled, backing up. “And we won't be British much longer if we have our way. This is your war, it doesn’t involve us.”Once more putting a hand on Harry's back, Sirius whispered to him, “Calm down. If we're not under arrest, we can go. No sense in causing an argument that might get us arrested for something legitimate.” Though, by now, he could easily see where Harry was coming from and wouldn't talk. What he said in the Alley, the same with Harry, could easily be found out another way. If they wanted the information, they could go about finding it through other channels.“As Harry said, we're not helping,” Sirius told Rufus, glaring at him. Unlike Harry, he knew the man from working as an Auror and just what he was like. Rufus was rather driven and would do about anything to get what he wanted from someone. If they kept refusing to help, he would pull that out as well. “You can find out what you want to know another way. What we said gives you the avenues to do so. Go about it through those means because we're not helping.”“It would make it easier if you gave me hints,” Rufus told them, looking between the two men, temper starting to spike at not getting anywhere.“We gave you all the hints you're getting,” Harry spat, glaring at him. “Talk to your Aurors. They know plenty. So do others in the Ministry. They just aren't talking to you about it. Instead, they're going to that old man with all they know. If you can't inspire enough loyalty among those who have worked under you for so long, it tells me we shouldn't give you anything we know.”Then, stepping closer, though Sirius held him back, he sneered, “And you lot are the ones that wanted me back to save your arses over a damned prophecy. Moved everything you could to track me down so I would come back. No chance. Fight it yourself.”Jaw ticking at what was said and from frustration, Rufus snarled back for the first time, “Look! We need all the help we can get! Information is at a premium and you have what I need.” Eyes flitting to Sirius, he added, “And Sirius knows well I'll do anything I can to get it.”“Just try,” Harry shot right back. “Try with us. You'll get nowhere. The bond alone won't allow you to get anything out of us. It's privileged communication between bondmates. You can't wiggle around it, no matter what you do. So, poking us will get you nowhere but making us angry. We've had it! Had it with the crap that goes on here. Had it with the inept and stupid people that have run the country and let this go on. Had it with manipulations for so long. Had it with how the judicial system works. Had it with how all of you can't get it together long enough to defeat a maniac that we all knew was back since my first year at Hogwarts! You've let it go on so long you're now in a bind. Too bad. We're not helping. As soon as we sell off the properties we're trying to get rid of, we're gone. And we won't be British citizens for long after we leave. We're done! Do you understand at least that much? We're not helping you! I don't care if it's information, pointing you in the right direction, whatever. We. Are. Done!”Though Sirius tried to hold him back, Harry took a step closer to the Minster and lowered his voice then said, “All of you can kiss our arses. We're done. How I was forced to live for so long. Sirius being tossed in prison without a trial. What all of you allowed people to pull with both of us for so long. That's more than enough. Since then, a government that has proven it's inept and foolish when presented with facts. Then they decide their saving grace is a prophecy that means me. They don't care that they don't know what all has happened in the years since it was made or if it was fulfilled in some way, they need me to come save them. No! We're done. Period. You get no help from us. I don't care what it means. This country can tear itself apart in a war the Ministry had all the hints in the world was coming since I was in Hogwarts and we're not helping. You have the means to get the information you want, you just sure as hell aren't getting it from us.”After Harry stepped back, Sirius put a hand on his back and rubbed it. He then lifted his chin and looked at the right irate Rufus and added, “I agree. We're not helping. Screw all of you. You want information? Get it from those close to the situation. All we have is from letters and guesses we made. We have nothing else in the way of real facts. We've chosen our life and it's not here. If you don't like it, that's not our problem. You can't force us to do anything, Rufus. And after all the shit I went through, with you being my boss, you aren't someone I trust. You let them throw me in prison without a trial. If you let the Ministry do something against our laws as head of the Aurors, I don't trust anything you say now that you're Minister. Your past always comes back to bite you. Yours is now.”Rufus gritted his teeth and huffed then ground out, “Look! I get you want out. Fine. I don't give a damn. You don't want to help? Your choice as well, just like it is for anyone else. Just give me a hint where to look!”Cumecus Greenways knew that if he let this go on, his clients might end up detained for something or other, especially with as angry as Harry was. So, he stepped between his clients and the Minister. “My clients gave you every avenue you need to find the information, Rufus. In the Alley, they said plenty that gives you the leads. They also said there, and here, where you need to start looking. You need to take what you were given and go from there. It's all the information you're getting, Rufus, and you can't force any more out of them. The bond alone will stop you from getting anywhere. Then you'll make them madder than they already are over being detained and you trying. Once they get to that point, I step in. When I step in, lawsuits, injunctions and everything else I can think of starts getting tossed about. Once I go down that road, I start talking to the papers and other news outlets. Is that what you want, Rufus? You have enough problems with this war that you don't need the papers questioning plenty of choices you made over the years. And I guarantee I'll pull out everything I know. They weren't around for all those years, but I was. I know plenty from my clients that relate to bad choices by the government during all those years and how they are right about so much. Do you really want to go down that road with me?” Then he waited, lifting his chin and glaring at the Minister of Magic.Of all the bits Rufus didn't need in the mess going on, a fight with Cumecus and him going to the press was one of them. It would just divide the Ministry and the focus they needed, something that would give Voldemort an advantage he didn't need. So, he huffed, “Fine. Get them out of here. I'll make sure no one stops you.” Then he turned and walked back behind his desk and threw himself in his chair, looking irate.Glaring at the two, he waited until Greenways escorted them out then summoned his secretary and began barking out orders. There were plenty he was going to have words with before the night was over. One way or another, he was going to get answers to the questions brought up in the shouting match in the Alley. He didn't care how he had to get it either.
Once they were in his office, somewhere safe, Greenways had Sirius and Harry take a seat. Both still looked plenty upset, especially Harry. After sending for tea, he took a seat behind his desk and said, looking between the two, “I think Rufus won't try again, but stay alert. I would suggest you don't go out among our kind unless it's absolutely necessary. If you do, contact me and I'll come along, no matter how minor the errand. I'm sure you can tend to the most menial the Muggle way, such as groceries.”
“We will,” Sirius assured him, putting a hand on the back of Harry's head and rubbing it. His husband was still quite irate over what happened, though he bet it was driven by plenty besides what happened in the Alley. “I don't think it'll be much, just trips to Gringotts to finish up getting our vaults transferred out of the country. We do have to tend to that chore in person, unfortunately.”“And I'll come along with no objection,” Cumecus assured him with a nod. “I'll get in contact with Gringotts and start arranging for them to issue Portkeys to you so you don't have to go via the Alley.”“Appreciated,” Harry huffed out, trying to calm down. “That was—shit. All of it. He had no reason to pull that stunt.”“No, he didn't,” Cumecus assured him with a nod. “I plan to ensure that he won't pull such a foolish scheme again, either. One of the plans I have is to draft up something for the legal department that ensures you're left out of the mix. I don't care by who when it comes to those in government. If they want to talk to either of you, they'll have to go through me.”“We'll let you do what you think is best,” Sirius nodded. “Just let us know.”“While we're here,” Harry started, leaning against Sirius and trying to calm down, “can you start on the Russian citizenship papers for us? Sirius has the family connection that can get them through, quickly, without the usual dance. I want us to have those as fast as we can manage once we are finally able to leave this damned country.”“I'll get those from the embassy today and start filling them out. Then I'll pass them on to you,” Cumecus assured him with a nod. “Now, about the properties—they go on the market this week?”“All but one,” Sirius told him. “We're still working on getting it cleaned up enough so we can put it up. It's here in London with every protection my family could put on it. We think it's the one that will fetch the best price, so we're taking the extra time to get it in the best shape we can manage.”“I'll get my hands on no trespass warding stickers for all the houses. It's something easy enough to get my hands on. Because of what's going on, I should have them by tomorrow. Once they're in my possession, I'll pass them on to you. Put them on all of them. I'm not sure how well known the properties are, but it's better safe than sorry when it comes to someone trying to get in for whatever reason.”“We'll let you and I'll get them up. Until then, I'll have the elves keep watch and put up a ward to keep anyone out until we get them in place,” Sirius told him, pleased with the suggestion. “I'll need you to pass the key in magic to the realtor and have him warned to be cautious as well. No sense in him putting himself in danger with some of the idiots that might try to get to us through him.”“Something I'll tend to right after you leave,” Cumecus nodded, making a note on an ever-present piece of parchment by his elbow. “Give me a couple days to come up with more to protect you both. There is plenty, I just have to find the most applicable. While I do, make sure you both protect yourselves. From what I know, you're in a safe place. Stay there as much as you can. Go out among Muggles if you have to, but stay alert. Yes, this is probably redundant with what I know of both of you and all you have been through, but it bears repeating.”“Something we're doing to the best of our ability,” Sirius assured him with a nod. “Today—we were fine until Death Eaters showed up.”“Not something you could have prepared for,” Cumecus sighed, shaking his head. Then a grim smile crossed his face. “I'm going to ensure you get the reward for the Death Eaters you helped them capture.”“Should be a right slap in the face, that,” Harry grinned, chuckling slightly. Oh, the anger was still there, but he was starting to calm down. All he wanted was to go home and relax. Having Sirius there would be enough for him to chill more. The whole day had been a complete cock-up and the fallout would be even worse because he was sure the fact they were back would be in every paper out there the following day.“It should and I doubt anyone will like it,” Cumecus told them, looking smug. “Just—please, stay safe and don't go anywhere without me. If I have to, I'll hire the two of you bodyguards for when you have to go out. I doubt you'll like having them, but it'll save the mess getting worse. While the Ministry is a big concern, though it's my hope Rufus will realize he can't get anything out of you when it comes to information, it's the other side that's now a concern. I'm sure what you said has made it back to You-Know-Who's ears, but it's doubtful it will stop him. And there is revenge for the capture of some of his big named followers.”“We just want out, as fast as we can,” Sirius told him with a shake of his head. “If you can find a way to push it, we'll go. I just don't see any way to move this faster. It's going to depend on those properties selling.”“Let me look into some areas and see what I can do to push this along,” Cumecus told him distractedly. “If I come up with anything at all, I'll owl for a meeting.” After leaning back in his chair, he looked between the two and said, “Go home. You're safe there. If anything pops up from the mess today, I'll get in touch quickly. Until then, just relax and tend to what you have to. And keep yourselves safe.”“We will,” Sirius said, standing and waiting for Harry to do the same. “Thanks for your help,” he told Cumecus, honestly, sticking his hand out. After shaking hands with the two, he escorted them out then made sure they Apparated away safely. When they were gone, he went back in to get to work. They had dropped plenty on him to attend to and it would take time. He also had to see what else was at his disposal to help. Hopefully, their lack of laws in areas Muggles had them could help. He also wanted to start looking for bodyguards for the two, get in touch with the realtor and a myriad of other issues. Oh yes, he would be busy for some time to come.
